Moment of Awesome - Sam Guthrie/Cannonball:After a shaky start, Sam gets a job interview for X-Factor Investigations. In the kitchen.
"You should talk to Jean or David, when he wakes up," he advised. "You've clearly been through a lot, and I'm sure you want to keep your privacy around telepaths like me. They're good at teaching people to shield their minds from psychics."
"Oh shit," Sam hissed. "Sorry, sorry- I took a shielding class at Muir but I was hardly around a telepath so practicing was.... a bit tricky..."
Sam closed his eyes and took a deep breath, mumbling a barely audible, "there goes your shot at that job Sammy," before turning to look at Quentin, nothing but pure concern on his face. "Are you alright? I didn't- I'm sorry. I'll work on it."
Quentin released his white-knuckle grip on the counter and stood up to stretch out the fresh crick in his neck and soreness in his arms and legs. "Don't shit yourself, it takes more than a little residual trauma to turn me off. I'd never get off if that were the case," he quipped as he did an overhead triceps stretch, keenly aware of how much he was revealing in a crop top. Shifting the balance of dominance back in his favor, as he preferred it. "Why do you want to work for X-Factor, anyway?"
"Savin' the day from a big monster is fine and all I guess, and I'm sure there's folks that love goin' around saving dimensions an' doin' big ol' trips to go help the world... but my hometown had folks come in every summer to help us and people tryin' to stop us from getting worse and natural disasters that brought in folks to put us back together and that's not what I'm interested in doin'. I was part of that rigamarole my whole life. The folks I always admired? They were the ones who put in the work in the community- the ones who helped take care of things, handled situations when they happened, and then tried to make sure they didn't happen again." Sam sighed. "Daddy always told me that you didn't fix a problem just cause you stopped it from getting worse, that you had to tackle the problem too, ya had to learn about it and take steps to make sure it didn't happen again. I reckon that's what y'all're best at. Y'all catch the bad guy and then help to make folks less vulnerable to the next one. That's the kind of work I wanna do."
Sam rolled his shoulders back and offered Quentin an awkward smile when it made the burn scar on his arm show from the sleeve of his t-shirt. "You can't individualize a systemic issue, but you can help individuals that're trapped in systemic issues. It's work worth doin' and I wanna be involved in it."
The telepath stopped mid-stretch, frozen as he processed Sam's words, then lowered his arms and sat back down. "That's very astute. I might steal that and claim it as my own," Quentin teased. "Do you have any experience with private investigating? Or criminology or the law?"
“I graduated high school early to illegally work in a coal mine to support my eight younger siblings.” Sam replied, shaking his head. “That’s about the only thing I’ve got experience with aside from bartending but I was heavily involved in the union. Worked with the secretary of our chapter and did a lot of the clerical work and pourin’ over labor law……..What I don’t know I’ll learn. Take any course available to me and work twice as hard as a pair of Percheron mules. I ain’t in the habit of lettin folks down.”
Quentin smirked, amused and encouraged by Sam's eagerness. "Sis, chill. I was younger than you and had far less experience doing anything besides being a whiny bitch when I started, and now I'm running things. Which is crazy to think about, but anything's possible when other people are footing your bills and you're psychic. So I guess what I'm saying is, let's see what you got."
"T' clarify-" Sam said, slowly, "does that mean I'm in?"

Watching Merger Of The Big Five, Part 1 adds another moment of awesome to Téa that only makes me love her more. When Kaiba's trying to run off and behave in his typical jerkass lone wolf way, Téa tries to stop him. As in, physically step in front of the rich asshole. When he tries to push her aside and say that is family business, Téa moves right back in front of him again and rightfully tells Mr. Dragon Fetish that she and her friends got caught in the middle of his "family business" so that unfortunately for him, this ongoing scenario of one kidnapped Mokuba Kaiba does concern them too. And even then, she herself tries to point out that they consider Mokuba a friend and want to help him. She showcases that she may dislike Kaiba, but she would do what she can to help Mokuba regardless of him sharing familial blood with a jackass who's been nothing but awful to her friends.
To say nothing of her saying 'Look at me when I'm talking to you!" (before pointing out why they want to help Mokuba) when Kaiba turns his head away (if only to look at the Big Five-possessed Tristan). Clearly, this girl gives no fucks about Kaiba's arrogant, lone-wolf attitude and behavior and just like in Duelist Kingdom, won't hesitate to call him out on his bullshit even when others tell her he's not worth it. And people treat her as nothing but a cheerleader, ha.

despite being more often than not a "rules as written" fan over "rule of cool", i really do love me a good "rules be damned, i'll give you this awesome moment" call. like matt giving fcg the otohan kill despite what her hp was at or brennan giving cerrit an extra mage slayer reaction attack at the end of calamity. honestly, if anything, i think the fact they mostly play by the book makes these moments even better because it really has that extra weight towards those decisions to put the rules aside.

Moment of Awesome - Theresa Cassidy/Banshee:While she, Meggan Szardos and Sam Guthrie are assisting in evacuation during Behold A Pale Horse, Terry is pushed to her limits.
"Aye," Terry murmured, nodding a little dully. She'd let her own shield fall a little when Sam buffered them, relief zinging between her temples in the moment before he and Meggan settled on the plan to move the victims. "Actually, if you'll steady her upper body, I'll just lift from the bottom and if you're flyin' as well, I can keep the shield beneath all of us to block anything they might throw." She considered their situation, then wished she'd been involved in something that involved screaming and flinging things around. She could keep that up for hours without getting tired. Flying was nearly second nature at this point, and at least she'd had plenty of practise flying with Kyle. It was maintaining the shield whilst doing everything else that might do her in. But not until after she'd gotten this woman somewhere safe. "Let's get goin', loves."
Sam waited until he was sure that Terry and Meggan were far enough up that they wouldn't be hit before grabbing the other passenger from the car. He dropped his shield and then allowed the blasts to come from his feet, propelling him and his passenger through the air and after the others. As soon as they were all landed, he glanced between the women. "Everyone alright?"
“I think so? Yes,” Meggan confirmed as they landed with their cargo as carefully as possible. When it came to her, she mostly just had a few scratches from some of the broken glass when she was wielding the ski pole, but it was nothing major, and could easily be taken care of in a little while. Aside from that, she was doing okay. “Terry?”
"Mm... aye," Terry agreed, swaying a little on her feet. She sat down rather abruptly, still maintaining the soundwave keeping the woman from the crash floating just a bit. "Och. Maybe no'," she murmured, accent thickening. "I'll just stay here a mo'."
Sam kept an eye on Terry, hoping that she'd be good enough to fly out of here. "What else can I do? I'm not as tired as you two yet. How can I help?"
Meggan wasn’t sure what she could do for Terry, but she did still want to help; she crouched near the other woman. “Just let me know when you need an extra shoulder, and I’ll be right here for you to lean on.” If she went down, then Meggan wasn’t sure who to break the fall of, between Terry and the levitating crash lady—while she estimated it wasn’t that far of a drop for the latter, she couldn’t say what the effect of a sudden extra shock might do.
She shook her head in response to Sam’s question. Could just being there be enough? “I’m not sure. I half want to go back for the ski pole, or find something else that’s strong enough from the debris, so we can fashion a makeshift stretcher for her, and let Terry rest her powers.”
"You two," Terry said, waving her hand toward Sam and Meggan. "Y'go on. Help others. I'll keep watch o'er these ones here. I'll be fine, now I'm sittin'. Y'shouldn't waste time wi' me. I'll jus' call someone for a pick up."
Sam nodded, and helped the person in his arms lay down gently on the ground. Turning to Meggan he nodded his head slightly, deferring to her directions. “Lead the way.”
Meggan spared another concerned look at Terry before they started off. "If you're sure," she began, before she stopped. She didn't want to just leave her in this state.
Once this was done, she vowed that she would come back in a little while and make sure that someone had come to collect Terry. Meggan signaled to Sam that she was ready, and began to point a few things out. She had spotted a discarded baseball bat and assorted long items on the scene that could be put to good work. And if several people had torn off their shirts in the heat of things, then they could be tied together, just as she had said.
Terry waved the two of them off, watching as they took flight. Pulling her mobile from her pocket, she considered who she might be able to call for assistance - certainly none of the usual suspects, as they were all out helping people in the district. She shook herself a little, finally laying the woman she had hovering to the ground. The other passenger came to tend to her, so Terry let her powers rest a moment, once again feeling that immediate release of tension between her temples. She'd developed a certain sense of throbbing behind that, a sharp thing that almost seemed to stab at the backs of her eyes.
She was fine, though. It wasn't until she hit 'call' for one of her friends from the Community Centre that she felt the tell-tale trickle coming from her nose. Touching it out of pure, simple habit, Terry wasn't surprised to see blood on her fingers. "Shite," she muttered.

I was legitimately surprised to learn that the final match of the Duelist Kingdom tournament between Yugi and Joey was completely absent in the original manga, with Joey choosing to forfeit and thus having Yugi declared the winner. But, honestly, I'm glad that the anime decided to give us this duel, as a perfect pre-climax fight before Pegasus.
In this duel, we get to see the ultimate results of Joey's progress as a duelist as well as how far he's come a person from the start of the whole tournament. Now, I won't deny that the duel between him and Bandit Keith also demonstrates this, but here Joey gets to have one of the few duels against an opponent who doesn't try to rig the deck against him (yes, I will speak about Time Wizard and no, it's not being rigged against him) as well as go up against what is technically the first teacher for Duel Monsters he had: his best pal.
Right from the get-go, Joey thanks Yugi for doing everything he could to help him get this far. Yugi, or rather Atem, does point out that he merely gave Joey the tools to have a chance and that Joey's own skill and wits had him use said tools to make it to the very final round of the tournament. Something, which again, Joey appreciates. But, Joey makes it clear that in this tournament match that he wants Yuge to come swinging at him like he would anyone else in the arena, for the sake of the pride of both of them being serious duelists.
As we see in the duel, Joey manages to pull some impressive moves that showcase that his placement in the finals was no fluke. One such magnificent maneuver of his being using Sword and Shield on Summoned Skull and Flame Swordsman, having planned on Yugi/Atem placing him out at some point and reserving a monster that would be less negatively affected by Sword and Shield. But this builds to the true moment of brilliance from Joey: using Graverobber to obtain Summoned Skull and then using Copycat to duplicate the effect of the recently-played Polymerization in order to summon Black Skull Dragon (symbolically a true demonstration of Yugi and Joey's unquakable friendship) and using it to bring down Gaia The Dragon Champion. And, even after losing him, manages to successfully pull one on Yugi by placing Baby Dragon on the field and letting Yugi assume a face-down he placed was Time Wizard only to spring Kunai With Chain and incapacitate Dark Magician. While Yugi ultimately wins, it shows that Joey's success in Duelist Kingdom was no fluke.
Now, I should talk about Time Wizard. Despite what so many people try to say, no, it wasn't Yugi pulling a long con on Joey. Remember how at the very start of the series that Joey's deck consisted of only Monster Cards? Clearly a deck like that would be pretty easy to break when going up against many duelists, especially given how the majority of Joey's opponents use cheap schemes and dirty tricks to get ahead against him (with the exception of Rex Raptor). Yes, Yugi had a plan to use Time Wizard in conjunction with Dark Magician to bring out Dark Sage. And obviously Dark Sage's effect to quick-play a magic card from Yugi's deck one per turn, irrelevant of who's it is would have been quite the lifesaver in all of his other duels on the island. But,it's clear that Yugi, being the guy who would do anything to help his friends, decided that he would rather cripple his own deck in order to allow his best friend a fighting chance at getting the $3,000,000 prize money. Note how Atem tried to destroy Baby Dragon when it hit the field. Even if Time Wizard's effect would still work even if it was controlled by the opponent, it was a big "IF" and the pharaoh didn't want to take any chances.
The ending of the duel and the immediate aftermath are also pretty powerful, with Yugi using Dark Sage (a debatably symbolic combination of one of his and Joey's most recognizable monsters) to use Monster Reborn and summon back another definite card demonstrating their bond of friendship, Black Skull Dragon and bring down Thousand Dragon (which arguably can showcase Yugi's influence having allowed Joey to mature as a duelist and person). Afterwards, Joey presents the Glory of the King's Hand to Yugi as he had won the match and the prize money. Only for Yugi, again showing what a true friend he is, to reject it. Obviously, $3M is nothing to sneeze at, but Yugi knows Joey needed the money for his sister’s operation to save her eyesight. Clearly, Joey got so caught up in the match that he forgot Yugi wouldn't hesitate to give him the winnings.
For what was effectively a filler episode, the match between Yugi and Joey to determine the winner of Duelist Kingdom was quite a nice way to conclude the tournament itself but not being the climax of the Duelist Kingdom Arc, leaving that for Yugi's showdown with Maximillion J. Pegasus.
Speaking of him, the dub adds a neat little scene with Pegasus, where, when Joey starts to get pushback from a combo of Dark Magician and Magical Hats, Pegasus notes that the world is an arbitrary place. One where people can be friends one minute and be pitted against each other the next, with stakes so high neither can afford to lose. Which forsehadows the duel between Yugi and a mind-controlled Joey in Battle City, with Téa's life hanging in the balance. I would speak about another portion of Pegasus' monologe and how it further enhances an already good filler episode, but, I believe that's for a separate post. This one seems rather lengthy, even for me.

Something really just. Nice that I noticed with the bros is that each of them has shown off some pretty interesting skills.
Raph is the one who fixes April’s ceiling fan for her, Mikey takes on half the work when making the new puppy rescue for Todd, and Leo is outright able to reprogram Shelldon’s AI (he messed up, but the fact he was able to do this at all is like??? Raph and Mikey were there too did they know Leo could do that because they were not surprised-)
Of course, this is nothing compared to Donnie’s own immense talent and skill for inventing and science in general, but it shows that the others are not incapable of assisting in his field if need be.
What I like to think with all of this is that they listened to and likely helped with Donnie’s various ideas growing up. Sure they may not get the specifics, and complex science talk goes right over their heads, but in a pinch they’d be able to get Donnie the right tool or set a wire back in place. It’s not as necessary now that Donnie is much more independent when he makes things, but it’s cute to imagine there being a time where the others had to pitch in and learned some stuff because of it.
