On the 27 September 1601, in the ChĂąteau de Fontainebleau, the dauphin was born.
Happy 422nd birthday Louis XIII, may God have you in His embrace, as you so wished during life.
P.S: this man definitely had a preference for posing with his right side more prominent, looking right and right hand on his hip. I love it, good choice monsieur!

Letters from Robespierre’s father
Monsieur, All the hearts taking their flight towards the sky, are resounding the aors of their plaintive accents; they pray, they conjure, they demand again with loud cries the worthy object of their love which they believe they have already delighted, so much do they fear losing it: ours are the only ones whose voices we do not hear; would they indeed be as mute and as motionless as they appear? No, mine answers for all; all at this moment breathe through it. I don't know what has kept their movements secret until now, and they have undoubtedly prevented, in spite of themselves, from showing outside the fires of love which consume them within. Several times, I have seen it, we have come together to deliberate on certain matters which do not deserve our attention: deciding nothing then, is what we could have done best: only once when it is a question of giving the King a pure, solemn, and indispensable pledge of our attachment to the royal family, shall we fear that it might be said that we have assembled? Lawyers, this title honors us; subjects of France, is a quality a thousand times more glorious for us; it is only by fulfilling it as the most glorious of our duties, in a noble and uncommon manner, that we will truly prove the nobility of our profession and that we will maintain under the asylum of the throne freedom and independence. I expect, Monsieur, from your feelings, the justice due to mine. I have the honor to be with the deepest respect Monsieur,  Your most humble and obedient servant Derobespierre (sic), Lawyer Arras December 9th 1765 Maximilien in a letter to Maximilien Baudelot, in which he’s trying to get the lawyers of Arras to come together and publicy plead for the betterment of the the dauphin, who died eleven days after the letter was penned down. Cited in Annales historiques de la RĂ©volution française, number 92 (1939) page 169-170
I, the undersigned, lawyer at the Provincial Council of Artois, renounce, for the benefit of my sisters, my rights and shares in the movable and immovable estates of my mother, acknowledging that I have received from said mother beyond the share that I could claim, both for me and for my children. Written at Arras, the thirtieth day of October, 1768 (Signed): DEROBESPIERRE Maximilien resigns from any inheritance whatsoever from his mother Marie de Robespierre (widowed since 1762). The letter is from the same year he departs from Arras and goes abroad. Cited in La famille de Robespierre et ses origines. Documents inédits sur le séjour des Robespierre à Vaudricourt, Béthune, Harnes, Hénin-Liétard, Carvin et Arras. (1452-1790) (1914) by A. Lavoine.
I, the undersigned, lawyer at the Provincial Council of Artois, hereby renounce for the benefit of my sisters all rights and shares in the movable and immovable estates of my late mother, acknowledging that I have received from said mother beyond the share that I could claim, both for me and for my children. Written at Mannheim, June 8, 1770 Maximilien confirms his resignation from the inheritance of his mother (died May 17 1770). Cited in Ibid.
Before the undersigned royal notaries of Artois appeared M. Maximilien-BarthĂ©lemy-François de Robespierre, lawyer at the Superior Council of Arras, residing in said Arras. Who recognized that, by an act made under his private signature, in the city of Mannheim, on the eighth day of June 1770, he declared that he renounced the movable and immovable successions of lady Marie-Marguerite-Françoise Poiteau, his mother, at the time of her death widow of M. Maximilien de Robespierre, lawyer at the Council of Artois. But, having since considered that this renunciation could not have its effect, considering that at that time, he did not have full and complete knowledge of the forces of said succession and that, since his return to this town, three months ago, he has taken perfect knowledge of said estates by inspecting the letters and papers abandoned by said mother, which Marie-Marguerite-Alexandrine-ElĂ©onore-Eulalie and Amable-Aldegonde-Henriette de Robespierre, his sisters, represented and entrusted to him. This is why said sieur appearing has, hereby, declared to renounce said successions and to claim nothing hereunder, giving power to the bearer of the bulk hereof to reiterate where and to whom it will belong. And just now said ladies Marie-Marguerite-Alexandre-ElĂ©onore-Eulalie and Aimable-Aldegonde-Henriette de Robespierre have appered; these have recognized that said sieur de Robespierre, their brother, has given them the titles and papers mentioned herein. Passed in Arras, the third of October, 1771. (Signed): de ROBESPIERRE; de ROBESPIERRE, the older; de ROBESPIERRE, the younger, (and as notaries): MERCHIER, HUSSON. Maximilien affirms he doesn’t want any of his mother’s inheritance yet again while on a stay in Arras. Cited in Ibid.

July 7th 1548 saw the Treaty of Haddington, between France and Scotland, confirming the betrothal of Mary Queen of Scots and Dauphin of France.
Mary wasn’t yet six years old and this was the second treaty arranging her marriage, the first being The Treaty of Greenwich which was ultimately rejected by the Parliament of Scotland on 11 December 1543 and led to The Rough Wooing during which the English King sent his armies north to force us into marrying off our Queen Mary, it was George Gordon, Earl of Huntly who famously called it ‘the rough wooing. ’stating
.
“We liked not the manner of the wooing, and we could not stoop to being bullied into love."
Mary of Guise turned to the Auld Alliance for help, dangling the carrot of her daughter’s hand for the French Dauphin, Francis, as a reward. On 7 July 1548, the Scottish parliament and the French ambassadors met at the besieged town of Haddington, fifteen miles from Edinburgh, to sign the treaty.
Here is a full transcript of the treaty
In the parliament of a most excellent princess Mary, queen of Scots, held at the abbey of Haddington on 7 July 1548, by one noble and mighty prince James [Hamilton], earl of Arran, lord Hamilton etc., and governor of the realm, and the three estates of the realm being present.
On the which day Monsieur [AndrĂ© de Montalembert, seigneur] d'EssĂ©, lieutenant general of the navy and the army sent by [Henry II], the Most Christian King of France at this present time, showed how his master the King of France, having regard to the ancient league and confederation and amity existing between the realm of France and this country, and of the mortal wars, cruelties, depredations and intolerable injuries done by our old enemies of England against our sovereign lady, being of so tender an age, her realm and her lieges thereof during these diverse years, whereby the said Most Christian King, being moved through fraternal amity and confederation foresaid, could do no less but to aid, support, maintain and defend at his power this tender princess, her realm and her lieges as a propitious and helpful brother against all others who would attempt injury against the same, not by words but by way of deed, and to that effect has presently sent him in this realm with his navy and army of noble men with such directions as to put this realm to the old liberty, privilege and freedom and to recover all strengths, castles and fortalices out of our old enemy’s hands, with the advice, counsel and assistance of my lord governor and nobles of this realm, to their utter power and to expend their lives to that effect, and not only has he sent this army presently but also promises in his said master’s name at all necessary times to come to send and to have in garrison men of war, munition and money in this realm in such quantity that shall repress our said old enemies during the time of war and keep and defend this realm from them and all others in liberty and freedom according to his commission, obligation and promise given to him under the said Most Christian King’s great seals shown and produced in the face of parliament. Therefore, having consideration of the matters stated above and how that the said Most Christian King has set his whole heart and mind for the defence of this realm, he desires in his said master’s name, for the more perfect union and indissolvable bond of perpetual amity, league and confederation, the marriage of our sovereign lady to the effect that the said Most Christian King’s eldest son [Francis Valois], dauphin of France may be joined in matrimony with her grace to the perpetual honour, pleasure and profit of both realms, observing and keeping this realm and the lieges thereof in the same freedom, liberties and laws as they have been in all the Kings of Scotland’s times past, and shall maintain and defend this realm and the lieges thereof as the same as he does for the realm of France and the lieges thereof according to his commission, promise and direction foresaid, produced as said is, and, therefore, desires my lord governor and the three estates of parliament to advise herewith and give their determination in this matter if the desire foresaid is reasonable and acceptable or not. [Mary of Guise], the queen’s grace, our sovereign lady’s most dear mother, being present, my lord governor and the three estates of parliament foresaid, all in one voice, have found and decreed and, by the judgement of parliament, concluded the desire of the said Monsieur D'EssĂ©, lieutenant in the name of the said Most Christian King, his master, (Monsieur [Henri Cleutin, seigneur] D'Oisel, his ambassador, being present in the said parliament confirming the same) very reasonable and have granted that our said sovereign lady be married with the said Dauphin at her perfect age, and presently give their consent thereto, so that the said King of France keep, maintain and defend this realm, the lieges of the same, the liberties and the laws thereof as he does in his own realm of France and for the lieges of the same, and as this realm has been kept, maintained and defended by the noble kings of Scotland in times past according to the promise of the said lieutenant, special commissioner in the said cause, and that our sovereign lady be married to no other person but to the said Dauphin only.
My lord governor, in our sovereign lady’s name, ratifies and approves in this present parliament the determination and consent of the three estates of the same being present, concerning the marriage of our sovereign lady with the Dauphin of France according to the act of parliament made thereupon, providing always that the King of France, the said Dauphin’s dearest father, keep and defend this realm, the laws and the liberties thereof as his own realm, lieges and laws of the same, and has been kept in the times of all the kings of Scotland past, and to marry her to no other person but to the said Dauphin only.
And so it was, with her marriage agreement in place, five-year-old Mary was sent to France to spend the next thirteen years at the French court. The young Queen sailed with Mary from Dumbarton a month later for Roscoff or Saint-Pol-de-LĂ©on in Brittany
The picture is a depiction of Mary Queen of Scots as a bairn.

Considerations upon appointments
Louis XIV's brother Philippe, duc d'Orléans- known as Monsieur- was a major asset whom Louis shrank from deploying to full advantage. Philippe had captured Zutphen in 1672 and Bouchain in 1676, before winning a major victory at Cassel in 1677 and following it up with a successful conclusion to the siege of Saint-Omer. Louis was proud of his brother's achievements, even to the point of placing a vast canvas by van der Meulen of the battle of Cassel on the great staircase at Versailles, but he was also horrified at Monsieur's disregard for his own safety. He was henceforth confined to acting as Louis's deputy when they campaigned together, as in 1684 and 1691, though in 1693 he was entrusted with command in western France. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to see this last appointment as an insult by an insecure elder brother, for in the Nine Years War Louis was consternated by the prospect of an Anglo-Dutch attack on the French coast. He could spare few regular troops for such an eventuality, but instead placed his trust in Monsieur. In the event of an invasion probably only Monsieur (or the king of the Dauphin themselves) could have mobilised the gentlemen of Normandy, Brittany and Poitou in sufficient numbers to make up a force capable of repulsing the Allies when backed by a handful of regular battalions and several regiments of milice. Based at Laval in Mayenne, from where he could rush to any part of the coast, Monsieur was a highly active commander who not only supervised military administration but also repaired major local highways. But his career was also governed by that of his older brother, and when the king retired from active campaigning so too, for precisely that reason, did Monsieur. Considering the duke was still in rude health, though aged fifty-three, with years of invaluable experience behind him, it was a dynastic decision which Louis could perhaps, at the time, ill afford to make.
Louis trusted Monsieur but he could not allow himself to be completely outshone by him. Yet when it came to the Condé Louis revealed all the submerged prickliness and insecurity of his character. Unsurprisingly, at first Louis was reluctant to place too much faith in the Grand Condé who had fought against him for eight years before 1659, and though Condé was more experienced in the Low Countries than Turenne he was not a commander in the first year of the War of Devolution. It would be an error, though, to assume that Condé was brushed aside owing primarily to royal paranoia. Contrary to what has been assumed, his exclusion from command in 1667 was not due to lingering royal resentment, but because, according to the Savoyard ambassador, the money he was owed by Spain, and which was enumerated in the treaty of the Pyrenees, was in arrears, and would be threatened by his participation in an active assault on the Spanish Netherlands. This money was considered necessary because of his likely candidature for the throne of Poland. Later that year, however, Condé was named as commander of the army of Germany, in part so that Turenne would realise he was not indispensable.

closed starter for @anxhoredheart - lotte & laurie
Lotte could have asked-but she trusted no one, including her employer. She obviously could not ask the queen, so the easiest way to find out any information on what would happen to her if the queen should fall pregnant was to search the crown prince's quarters.
They had assumed she would not, and that it would have not taken this long to kill her, but the summit had gotten in the way, and it was frustrating Lotte. Should the queen become with child, her condition could mean the end of Lotte's employment-and if the crown prince thought she would let slip anything of his plan, maybe her life.
She had expected to be here alone, so hearing footfalls in the next room was a shock to her system. Lotte reached for the thin knife kept under her full skirt, sliding it into her sleeve as she opened the door. She already had an excuse to be in there, and was good at saving face to anyone-except maybe the dauphin of France. "Monsieur le dauphin. I did not expect to see you here. May I inquire as to why you are in Prince Luca's chambers?"

I read 'her sweetened breath & her tongue so mean' this morning and I am still crying about it right now. Like, I've read fics for the roseverse and they're so much darker than Jupeter, but I just really really loved Madame! And also poor Dauphin, having his father returned to him in a crate! He's got no one left.
(also the mehndi thing. Because no one—and I mean no one—I'm familiar with online has ever called mehndi 'mehndi' (I've only ever seen it as henna) and that just really got me in the emotions. And having to find the groom's name in the bride's mehndi—well, not exactly because that's not on my side of things but I was still so frickin happy!)
(also tiny bejeweled woman??? Rita is that you???)
HI I WAS SO DELIGHTED TO WAKE UP TO YOUR COMMENT!!!
dauphin really is having a TERRIBLE TIME he's alone and he knows almost nothing abt the circumstances of his father's death (and he's making assumptions that might get him in trouble) but like!!! hard to be rational in situations like this!!
and ahh i'm so glad the inclusion of mehndi made you happy, while writing i was like if i'm giving dauphin the worst case scenario of arranged marriages (spouse wants you dead) the least i can do is give him a banger wedding
also YES the tiny bejeweled woman is dauphinverse rita (i DO plan to write more of this story but i have to decide on names for everyone...) and i like to imagine that when dauphinverse mag first sent over monsieur dauphin's biodata, madame and rita read it together kicking their legs up on the bed giggling
(the fic in question for anyone interested!)

What are your favorite portraits of each of the Mesdames and their brother Monsieur Le Dauphin?
Oh man get ready
Okay, I'm not counting Marie-Louise or Marie-Therese-Felicite
For Babette, it's either of these two. In the first one she looks so regal and cool and it looks like it was based on one of Maria Leszczynska, for the other I just love the blue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henriette. I really like her headdress and I love her pose
Tumblr media
Dauphin. He looks so sweet here, which is funny considering I think he'd bite Pomadour's hand off! Also, I believe it was made during his marriage to Raphaelle, who I adore.
Tumblr media
Adelaide!!! My wifey!!! The dreaded question. I. Love her so much, I had such a hard time choosing. Adelaide tying knots was the first portrait I had ever seen of her, while the first one I just love the casualness of.

Sophie... She's so pretty

Louise. I like the details!!

Les vacances au Chollard. 1959 1960 1961
Texte de Jean-Claude Long

here's a fic I wrote for the 2022 TPP Bang! It's maybe my favorite fic I've ever written and has gotten many glowing reviews so check it out :)
SUMMARY
Once upon a time, a princess met a prince, and they fell madly in love and lived happily ever after the end. That’s how it’s supposed to go anyway, or so Juno had heard. In his experience? Rarely that simple.
Juno Steel doesn’t want to get married, and he doesn’t want to run a kingdom, but Benzaiten is missing and presumed dead, leaving him sole heir to the throne. Monsieur Edmund Dauphin is insufferable, but Juno's going to grit his teeth and bear it, for his kingdom or whatever.
Peter Nureyev is after the amber wand, a supposedly magical artifact worth more to him as a valuable trinket he can sell. Juno Steel seems like just another stuck up brat of a princess, but Nureyev is happy to play up the falsified charm if it means getting his prize. Soon, he'll be rich.
A tale of magic and monsters, love and loathing, princesses and thieves, and... rabbits?
