Non-Human Character Revealing Themselves

"I've been keeping a secret from you." She looked at him sideways, ready to interrupt him, be he was already rambling. "I've been trying to tell you," he continued, "but every time I get a chance I get this knot in my stomach and I feel all weird and nervous and I just can't bring myself to say it. And, even now, I'm not sure if I want to tell you, but I need to. Because keeping this from you has been the hardest thing I've ever done."

She took a deep breath, holding it in her chest and releasing it so slowly she felt lightheaded. Her nerves were running high and she felt like her head was swimming. She couldn't bring herself to say anything, not when they were sitting right next to her and staring at her as if she had grown two extra heads.

They just had to do it. There was no better way to tell her that they weren't human. No words could explain what they were, they just had to show her. They were so afraid that she would run or scream or cry in terror, but they couldn't keep it a secret any longer. They took a deep breath, and let the transformation take over.

He watched their reaction. Waited for any sign of disgust or fear to take over their features. But it never came. Shock settled into their eyes, but it was soon overpowered by awe. "You're beautiful," they whispered to him, pressing a hand to the side of his now-monstrous face. He felt like he could cry. "You're not scared of me?" "Scared of you?" they repeated, laughter hidden in their voice. "I could never be scared of you."

"I'm not human," she told him. "I never was. And I've been lying to you all this time. I feel horrible, but I've been so afraid to tell you because I don't want you to think of me or see me any differently. And I just--" He pressed a gently kiss against her fanged lips. "You're still my girl," he said, "and that's all that matters."

Ok so I just found out that male spiders will sometimes pluck a tune on their webs in order to attract a mate and I’m just thinking what if driders did the same. Just imagine them being masters of string instruments, or making complex webs that created the most beautiful sounding music and serenading their potential partners with it.

Or maybe a situation involving a deaf person stumbling across a driders web and feeling the vibrations of their song and just being in complete aw of it and the drider being like the cute human likes my music (≧∇≦)

“w-wait!” the human spluttered out. the huge monster hovering over them removed their hands from their body immediately and gazed at them with concern. they gave a small nod to the fragile human beneath them as they moved to sit face to face, hoping that they would continue to talk.

the human inhaled, like it was their last ever breath, before speaking again.

“you haven’t been familiar with our society for very long but you must have a certain idea of what you’re about to see,” the human explained, “and I’m not exactly like that...my body isn’t like that. maybe for your first time seeing a human like this, it shouldn’t be me? I’m worried I’ll disappoint you; I’m worried I won’t be the ideal human you want to see and then everything will go wrong—”

“stop. please, stop.” the monster slowly reached out to them again, gently holding their hand and rubbing the back of it. they inched closer, almost as if they were afraid that the distance was going to swallow their next words whole.

“I am still unsure of how to communicate efficiently with your kind on matters that make you upset or uneasy,” the monster’s voice was thick and low, oozing with tenderness, “but I can tell you this: I don’t want a human. I just want you. whatever form you take, I want to see it. if you say you are outside of whatever form the ‘ideal human’ may take in the eyes of your - from what I’ve seen so far - rather brutal society, then that is even better for me to indulge. it is not humans I have fallen in love with, tiny one, it’s just you.”

the human replied in an instant, a frenzied tone dancing throughout their words.

“...I have scars though, and a lot more blemishes than what meets the eye to you right now. my skin isn’t soft, it isn’t smooth...”

a small smile spread across the monster’s face in hopes of the human returning it, and that they did - despite feeling like bursting into tears instead.

“then tell me about the stories your scars hold. tell me how I can help relieve any pain your skin may be feeling. tell me how to love this body that is so beautifully different to my own. teach me; allow me to love you completely.”

Can you give any advice to writing about monsters or creating your own?

How to Write a Monster

Physical Characteristics:

Don't be too specific about the way your monster looks, but give enough information for the reader to create a general idea. Whatever your reader imagines the monster to look like combined with the description you give, will likely be much scarier than anything you create.

Examples:

It had glowing red eyes, like two spheres of blood that watched in the ever growing darkness.

The creature-- whatever it was-- had to be at least twenty feet tall. Nothing even remotely human could have caused the damage it did.

The first thing we noticed were the claw marks that slithered down the walls.

Background:

You don't need an intricate story as to where the monster comes from or why it looks the way it does because sometimes the unknown is scarier. However, there needs to be some kind of background for logic's sake.

Examples:

We weren't sure what it was now, but we knew it used to be human.

The creature is said to have been roaming the forest for centuries, created by the manifestations of myths and legends that were shared over hundreds of years.

It was an experiment gone rogue, escaping from a hidden facility years ago and somehow managing to stay out of sight. Until now, that is.

Targets:

Why does your monster behave the way it does? Does it have a specific goal? Knowing what triggers your monster and what motivates it will give your reader a better understanding of your monster.

Examples:

The creature seemed to only appear at night. Whatever it did in the daylight, they weren't sure, but when the sun sets? It hunts.

It became violent at the scent of blood.

We think it preyed on anger, infecting those around it to become hysterical with rage.

Weaknesses:

Your characters need a way to defeat the monster, or at least a way to keep it at bay. Giving a monster a weakness or a limit makes it unique, as well as making it believable. However, it's weaknesses should not be revealed until later in the story.

Examples:

We didn't know much about it, but we knew that it didn't like sunlight.

They spent their summer days swimming in the lake because the creature feared the water. Going home at night was all the more scarier for the same reason.

The monster could only be harmed by fire as far as they could tell. No one left their homes without a lighter or at least a match.

I love terrifying beasts who live for the hunt as much as the next person, but I adore monsters who aren't that smart and kinda clumsy too. Nagas who get their own tails tied in a knot or stuck around furniture. Werewolves who get irrationally scared at things like vacuums and the doorbell ringing. Vampires who run into doors and windows, not realizing they're closed. Merfolk who accidentally beach themselves and refuse to accept help out of embarrassment. Centaurs accidentally bumping things over and scaring themselves, leading to them knocking another object over. They're adorable. I love them.

"Get away from me! What even are you? What kinda hell did something like you come from?!"

The human, known to most as simply an asshole, though hiding much worse, backed into the corner. The entity, dangerous, beastly, monstrous, stepped forth.

"I didn't simply 'come from' anywhere. I was made.."

"What kinda sicko would make something like this?!"

The creature hummed, feeling amusement about some aspect of this. "You see.."

"Monsters make monsters. The ones who do, are usually much more heinous than their creations."

The human frowned in disgust. "Well I don't even wanna imagine what the freak who made you is like.."

The monster, though wanting to laugh in the face of that remark, couldn't help but be overcome by bitterness over its sad fate. "You know the kinds of freaks who can make me.. Who do make me."

"W.. What's that supposed to mean..? What kind of freaks?"

"Look in the mirror." the monster rose a pointing claw at the human's face, in prosecution. "Freaks like you."
