Desert of Desolation (1987) is another supermodule, collecting the well regarded trilogy of Egyptian adventures, I3: Pharaoh, I4: Oasis of the White Palm and I5: Lost Tomb of Martek. These were initially conceived as a trilogy by Tracy and Laura Hickman and Philip Meyers, so collecting them together under one cover was a good choice. Sticking them behind that gorgeous Keith Parkinson cover painting was another inspired decision. William John Wheeler, who compiled the book, also took great pains to increase its usability. Not that the originals were bad, this book just makes conscious decisions about organization that I don’t think were on folks minds back in ‘82 (and really, as some of the first narrative-focused modules, the originals broke plenty of ground already).
What’s weird is that this book is retrofitted into the Forgotten Realms. It is, in fact, the first RPG product to bear the FR logo (Darkwalker on Moonshae, Douglas Niles’ novel, debuted the label; the box set would appear a month later). Even if the logo is on the back (and bears the lie “designed for use with” above it). To accomplish this, a pretty sizable amount of work went into renovating the original modules. For starters, you never got a real view of the setting region as a whole, which is rectified here. There’s a lot of lore and history added in to connect it to the Realms as detailed in the soon to emerge campaign box. Is that necessary? Ehhhhh. Probably not. But it doesn’t really take anything away, not even space — this book feels pleasingly overstuffed. Coupled with its overhaul of scenario presentation, that probably makes this the best of the reprint supermodules.

163. Douglas Niles - N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God (1982)
Tumblr media
The first contribution by Douglas Niles, who would go on to contribute a number of modules for AD&D as well as co-create the Dragonlance setting, and write a whole bunch of D&D novels, including the first Forgotten Realms novels (the Moonshae trilogy), this was a pretty good calling card.
Tumblr media
This module successfully walks the tightrope between being too sandboxy and too railroady. It gives players plenty to do by themselves as they investigate the opening town of Orlane but directs them inexorably to the titular Reptile God's headquarters. There are some really fun roleplay mechanics here, taking into account that the small rural village of Orlane has been progressively taken over by Cultists who have either converted, kidnapped or charmed villagers into being loyal to the cult of the reptile god, with just a few remaining untouched by the nefarious influence.
Tumblr media
The investigation in the village is the most original part of the story and as the story goes on we do get to a kind of meat-grinder final dungeon where you either need a powerful NPC to tag along with you or you'll become a red smear on the walls... or just a wisp of smoke, seeing as your 1st level party will have to fight a boss that starts off by shooting a fireball at you as an appetizer. Still, with a bit of DM tinkering there is much fun to be had here, and this is a classic module for a reason.

Okay, so thanks to @drfowler for tagging me
Birth year: 2.000 a. C.
Star sign: Gemini, but I don’t give a f*ck about astrology
Height: 1,68 m
Put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs:
Reign Of Darkness by Thy Art Is Murder
Painkiller by Judas Priest
Word Up by Cameo
Tornado of Souls by Megadeth
I like how it show a little bit of the diverse taste in music I have
Grab the nearest book to you and then turn to page 23, what is line 17?
“health and much less that has cardioprotective properties“
It’s one of my mom’s books on health
Ever had a song or a poem written about you?
No, I don’t think so, but a musician I know once dedicated one of his songs to my brother and me in one of his shows.
When was the last time you played air guitar?
This is such a weird question, but I usually play air guitar, and the last time was yesterday while listening to Bleed by Meshuggah
Celebrity crushes? Sofía Vergara, Salma Hayek, Jenna Fischer and Sebastian Stan
What’s the sound you hate? Love?
I hate the screech that cars make when their driver brakes and the brakes are old. I love the crackling of fire
Do you believe in ghosts?
No, I don’t believe in any paranormal sh*t.
Do you believe in aliens?
Of course? I mean, obviously there is life in other planets all around the universe, but I don’t think that they have arrives to Earth
Last book you read?
I’m currently with a trilogy based on Faerûn (Dungeons & Dragons’ main world) named the Trilogy of the Moonshaes by Douglas Niles. I read the first book, Darkwalker on Moonshae, and now I’m currently reading the second book of the trilogy, Black Wizards
Do you like the smell of gasoline?
Not much, honestly
Last movie you’ve seen?
Predator (the first one)
What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?
I don’t think that a fistula near my asshole counts, so I’ll say the time I passed out while taking a sh*t and hit my face with the sink. I almost hit my eye.
Do you have any obsessions right now?
I think the closest to an “obsession” I have right now is my “obsession” with drone doom metal. It’s my favourite metal (and generally music) genre, but I didn’t really listened to it that much, son now i’m listening to a lot of bands (Black Boned Angel, Sunn 0))), Cthulhu, Altaar, Arkhitekht...), so that’s it
Do you tend to hold grudges?
I am a very resentful person, so yeah. Plus I hate humanity in general
In a relationship?
Unfortunately nope
I don’t think he comes to Tumblr anymore, but just in case I will tag @meatgrinderfulloffetuses for this
