Three songs for one OC (or rather one group), one WIP and on companionships. Respectively for Wings And Horns, A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore and The UnTitledverse. Listen and read below:
Wings And Horns is an Original Work I'm planning to write, which involves a pair of angels chasing after a pair of extremist demons who are trying to destroy the "Soulmate System"; a divine system designed to romantically pair souls together throughout lifetimes and reincarnation. Archangel Metatron and his companion, an Angel of Death named Azriel, are tasked with preserving the system, while a Demon from the Sloth Ring known as Xiang Ba'al and his adopted daughter, a Sinner soul by the name of Jezebel, start a campaign to abolish the Soulmate System due to the flaws that had personally affected Jezebel. "Carousel" encapsulates everyone's place in the system, how while it is well-meaning and capable of bringing joy to some, it does leave others at a disadvantage and gives a lack of choice in their destinies.

"'Round and 'round like a horse on a carousel, we go
Will I catch up to love? I could never tell, I know
Chasing after you is like a fairytale, but I
Feel like I'm glued on tight to this carousel
Come, come one, come all
You must be this tall
To ride this ride at the carnival
Oh, come, take my hand
And run through playland
So high, too high at the carnival
And it's all fun and games
'Til somebody falls in love
But you've already bought a ticket
And there's no turning back now
'Round and 'round like a horse on a carousel, we go
Will I catch up to love? I could never tell, I know
Chasing after you is like a fairytale, but I
Feel like I'm glued on tight to this carousel
This horse is too slow
We're always this close
Almost, almost, we're a freakshow
Right, right when I'm near
It's like you disappear
Where'd you go? Mr. Houdini, you're a freakshow
And it's all fun and games
'Til somebody falls in love
But you've already bought a ticket
And there's no turning back now
'Round and 'round like a horse on a carousel, we go
Will I catch up to love? I could never tell, I know
Chasing after you is like a fairytale, but I
Feel like I'm glued on tight to this carousel
Why did you steal my cotton candy heart?
You threw it in this damn coin slot
And now I'm stuck, I'm stuck
Riding, riding, riding
'Round and 'round like a horse on a carousel, we go
Will I catch up to love? I could never tell, I know
Chasing after you is like a fairytale, but I
Feel like I'm glued on tight to this carousel."
Next song I'd say is less for the OC in The UnTitledverse I chose this for, by the name of Madame Callaghan, who is the director of C.Y.P.R.U.S, a multiverse organization that kidnaps children and trains them to be assassins and hitmen (amongst other unfavorable things), but more so for both Madame Callaghan and her expectation and relationship with her "children" as well; Mordecai (The Huntsman), Urijah (The Nihilist), Theodore or rather Theo (The Copycat) and lastly Candace (The Combatant). I tried to encompass the main figureheads of C.Y.P.R.U.S with this one.

"Time of the essence
Do not let me down (Down)
So many people in one place
It's time for us to make a presence
Time is of the essence
I won't let you down (Down)
So many people in one place
Oblivious, just like you say
So just trust me this one time
I know you won't regret it
I know you are sick, but so am I
And I will be there for you
Through time as it tick, tick, ticks
And I will be there for you
Through time as it tick, tick, ticks
And I will be there for you
My darling, I know there's certain things that you should know
I know this comes with a price that I'm willing to pay
Be ready
Something terrible is coming (something terrible is coming)
(Tick, tick, tick, tick)
Everything I've worked for, and everything I do
You know that there's a reason that I do these things for you
I do it for the thrill, I do it for the fun
You've taught me there's a twisted usefulness in everyone
Let me prove my point, it will not disappoint
Just give me the word, I am ready, I am poised
Isn't this what a true friend would do?
I promised I would be there for you."
This song relates to Marissa "Ress" Bishop and Ortega "Ore" Brantley's bond with their Fallout companions in A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore. Ore has been around long enough to make companions during the events (though slightly altered) of Fallout (1997), 2, 3 and New Vegas, while Ress has been around to bond with her companions in Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4. After Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2, Ore takes an "keep at arms length" approach with human companions in 3 and New Vegas, because he's outlived the likes of Elrand Brant (The Vault Dweller), Ian, Tycho, Katja and likely John Cassidy and Vic as well (either to age or circumstances) including Elrand's granddaughter Finidy Mona (The Chosen One), whom had been killed by Ore's father, Arcane Urias. Ore mostly connects with non-human companions as they are either a Ghoul or a Super Mutant and have a longer lifespan, until he makes a connection with Ryder (Courier Six). Meanwhile, Ress has the luck of gaining companions and keeping in contact with them in less than a decade, and due to her upbringing with the Bishop Crime Family, has a need to socialize and keep her companions close. She understands that due to her father, Urias', biology she'll likely outlive most others just like Ore, so she takes it upon herself to make as much meaningful relationships as possible to remember fondly over. The reason Ore and Ress gravitate towards these companions is either due to a sentimental reason or even because nearly all companions are as odd and outcasted as the brother and sister are.

"Hey, everybody loses it
Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes
And hey, yeah, I know what you're goin' through
Don't let it get the best of you
You'll make it out alive
Oh, people like us, we've got to stick together
Keep your head up, nothin' lasts forever
Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten
It's hard to keep high when you're living on the bottom
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa
We're all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us
Hey, this is not a funeral
It's a revolution after all your tears have turned to rage
Just wait, everything will be okay
Even when you're feelin' like it's goin' down in flames, oh."
Do I even have to say, they are the freaking MARIO BROS!
Screw the people who say that Mario is an abusive brother, they are literally best friend bros and deserve to win this entire bracket
Mordecai and Rigby
the ideal best friends. like they mess with each other and care for each other and while they do have their shortcomings sometimes, they always make it up to each other
ok another one in that i went over everything again expressly to pick up murder mystery clues, especially in the beginning
noted as the first appearance of mordecai, hanging out in the garage. to be perched on the hood of a car, leaning back, is so whimsical for him. jaunty. but also, being the earliest appearance in the comic / its own timelines, you know. more informatively, it sure seems like atlas was shot or something there. looks like it matches his design even from the mostly obscured look we get at it, and presumably there's any all the more unobscured view available to everyone in-universe. it's also presented as part of someone's file, so that's noted re: drago, though it may just be the required framing to present it as a photograph that'd exist at all
then introduced to mitzi in the next page, and i've helpfully added the arrow b/c i was looking for it like "well, based on this Theory that the basis of mitzi and mordecai being in cahoots and having an understanding about it is their mutually having a personal/emotional connection to atlas (at least on their end b/c we see so little from atlas and hear even less. even when people would usually say one is personally connected to their wife. are they)....might mordecai show up at the glimpse of atlas's funeral" and i'm noting how closely that design there aligns with mordecai's, even though this isn't high res enough to be absolutely certain. but: seems to have a shaded-in coloration, center streak in the ear, sharply triangular corner of face (especially a feature in these earliest depictions, rather than this triangularity incorporating a bit more waviness / curve later), light uhh muzzle nose mouth area, what could be the outline of the light stripe under the eyes, light eyebrows >:c ly arched, & pince-nez or just glasses if that's the only option when you're cats....there's a lot of "wow that really could be mordecai huh" design alignments that are otherwise just a lot of coincidences like, whoops drew this background rando who matches so closely one of the main cast members....characters. getting theatrical out here. and what's then also noticeable is: none of the other background randos resemble any other characters, even when if mordecai is simply here as an Important Employee, where's viktor, where's anyone else we know was already around, where's the employees who remained steadfast who are shown immediately after this, versus mordecai who, as an employee, did Not loyally stick around at lackadaisy, but as someone with enough emotional investment in atlas for that to indeed be the foundation of his and mitzi's murder mystery Understanding, to then also maybe be the only lackadaisy employee at atlas's funeral (presumably with mitzi's knowledge), to have left lackadaisy out of grief rather than professional interests....hmm
mordecai also in this picture, where again everyone's hanging out, next to atlas and singled out by being the only person not sitting. did he just get there, maybe. is he On The Job still, i.e. maybe by being something of an [almost always active personal bodyguard] here. seems he'd face more Away from atlas for that. but not like i know what he's up to otherwise, and Thee Point may be to more symbolically have him standing apart. with even viktor also there, sitting and chilling, to show how mordecai Might also be doing that....but isn't. also of course tingling with mystery senses about what mitzi was going to have said to wick here, about how she would hate to, dot dot dot...then changes her mind upon Considering Atlas
here's mordecai Standing Near atlas again while socializing is happening. while he is also distinct from a) mitzi, in that this is confirming (if somewhat implicitly) that mordecai was in fact already associated with lackadaisy & atlas before atlas met mitzi, and b) viktor, who was still stationed with the arbogasts' funeral home, wherein i'm also considering this relevant b/c naturally it emphasizes that the professional viktor & mordecai duo's existence doesn't make them interchangeable: backing up that mitzi sure may have had a reason beyond a coin flip for having this secret with mordecai rather than viktor (and, of course, the reason probably isn't just "i need to work with some lackadaisy employee who can fire a gun" in the first place)
a couple more points being
mordecai going on and on about professional approach all the time; could simply be his preference, could be an expression of the like precision / methodical perspective that makes him good at biting and killing, could be [that] plus just how he deals with his job being biting and killing when it's unlikely he was up to that before the train ride ft. atlas and atlas taking him on for that success....i also wonder if he took a Professional Approach to killing atlas / thinks of it in that way, even if that reason for [secret mystery involvement with mitzi on this] was an emotional one, and that being recent and tumultuous has him like tripling down on this. even though mordecai may not have killed atlas either, even presuming atlas Was shot and killed. and knowing that mitzi gave him a gun, or mordecai gave her the gun, or they passed it back and forth a few times for obfuscation
the pig farmers start wandering into a dark area of lackadaisy's caves and there's bones back there. what goes on in said caves....all this coming about b/c atlas opportunistically took advantage of the cave access, seems like the kind of environment with real potential for some figurative resonance. like also the rivers.
mitzi telling wick that atlas was the murderous one in the relationship....not necessarily that significant when like, technically who around here Isn't murderous. just like there having been "here's the body stashing cave section" isn't necessarily extraordinary in its literal existence, but with the symbolism of wandering into the caves and finding an area with no light, where you start walking on old bones, and are about to be killed yourself....hmm. and re: atlas's murderousness, sure is possible to team up to kill someone to protect a fourth party, even though like, who. and that would add another layer of "mitzi and mordecai care about the same person" on top of their presumed [handshaken] emotional regard towards atlas. possible, but like, who would that be. it seems unlikely atlas would, say, threaten ivy or something. and how would that incorporate that [there has to be the Mitzi's Asserted Culpability] element. but these things are sure noted
not directly related to the mystery but i will leave off again on the mordenico agenda. even though, also, it is a "bite me a zillion times, two zillion times shy on me" situation like, what are the odds the [inroad of intrigue over shaking up the glitter in your funny little guy who everyone usually just would rather ignore] situation is actually bound for working out. yet [Also Everything Else. like in this scene and the prior Hotel Room Fête encounters] and declaring yourselves as the same and trying to stay friends no matter what....we can dream
Ranking Roman Mysteries books from least favourite to favourite- Part 2
Once again, this is just a matter of personal taste and I’d love to hear about other people’s favourite books.
8. The Sirens of Surrentum
I am genuinely quite surprised by how much I like this book. Arguably you could swap it and the Assassins of Rome around on this list, it changes depending on my mood, but I’ve read this one the most so I’ve put it above. It’s a really mature story told from the point of view of very young characters, and I like how it touches on how actual messed up relationships were back then, from how young everyone was, to issues of consent and servitude. The Villa Limona is a beautiful setting for this honestly creepy (creepy like ick) plot- and I’m so glad it ends with Flavia finally seeing Felix for the spider he is. I can fully understand why it didn’t get an adaptation for the show.
7. The Slave-Girl from Jerusalem
Absolutely the best mystery out of any of the books in my opinion- maybe because it is a murder mystery. The character development happening in tandem with the mystery is excellent, and getting to learn how Ancient Roman law worked is a treat. Morbid as it is, I love the part where the kids each write their wills. Jonathan’s prophetic dreams have a huge part to play here and the tension they add is next level. Ends so sadly, even if it is tackling a sadly realistic part of Ancient life. Also the foreword is hilarious. Not the last book I read but the last book I bought, so I haven’t read it as much, and I’m glad I get to rectify that now that I do have it.
6. The Colossus of Rhodes
Bear with me because the Lupus bias is real. That being said, what a great book. High seas adventure, chasing slave traders, more tragedy for Lupus. The introduction of Floppy! I like the closed environment of the ship- gives the kids a lot to do together. Establishes excellent continuity for the world. All in all, just a really great read.
5. The Gladiators from Capua
Top five here we go! Starting off with an absolutely intense one. Seriously, contender for one of the darkest books in a series littered with them. The depiction of the games is brutal and yet never fails to capture what made them so appealing for the Roman people. The Colosseum as a backdrop for finding Jonathan helps keep everything tense and exciting. I really appreciate how much I learn from these books while never feeling like I’m being forced to study. The only sad thing is because it comes straight after Enemies of Jupiter, it’s often where I burn out in a re-read because I forced myself to read Enemies and then lost steam. Stellar book though- sad the TV show had to change it so much (even though I get why)
4. The Secrets of Vesuvius
Pliny is here and he has got some bullshit science with him! Book two and Lawrence is already excited to mess around with real life historical figures. I love how much the volcano takes a back seat until it erupts, but because we’re reading in modern times with the benefit of hindsight, its presence is always felt. The mystery here is a little...clumsy, but it doesn’t need to be anything special when you’ve got Vesuvius to deal with. That being said, the Vulcan story is nothing bad but it does bring the book down just a smidge for me. Still, there’s something so charming about the first few books when the kids are still learning to gel together. Ends a little weirdly (abruptly?) but I can’t help but love it.
3. The Thieves of Ostia
Here’s where it all started- though kid me had no idea this book existed because I’d seen the TV show first. Fully understand why they didn’t go for it, but wish they did because it is just so much fun to see these characters meeting each other. Lawrence does an amazing job setting her story in this Ancient world and creating relatable and likeable characters to live inside it. The mystery is great, I love reading it with hindsight and noticing all the clues. The hot summer setting is artfully described and I can picture it so clearly. A perfect introduction for a really good series.
2. The Dolphins of Laurentum
Look, I nearly made this my top book because the Lupus bias is so real. It’s also the first book I ever read when I noticed it in my primary school library and went ‘hey isn’t that the show I watch on Rollarcoaster?’ Bias aside, this is such a great fucking book. Continues to deal with the repercussions of Vesuvius in a really clever way, brings back Pliny!!!!!!!!!! Even if it’s just his nephew, but he’s great. Treasure diving- beautiful villa- extreme Lupus backstory!!!!! Literally the only thing that stopped it from taking the top spot is the Miriam/Aristo/Pliny/Gaius whole thing. Sadly, I think it takes away from a story that should mostly be about Lupus, his past, and then Flavia and her father and their troubles. I don’t hate the parts but sometimes they just break up moments of the story in weird ways. Like, Lupus nearly drowned but we just gotta wait a bit to watch Pliny and Aristo duke it out.
1. The Pirates of Pompeii
The more I think about it, the more I realise the top spot could only ever go to this book. I don’t even know where to begin with how much I love it. When I was overseas in 2012 and just realising I could actually buy Roman Mysteries there, I mostly bought books that I hadn’t read yet- like the last two and then Sirens and Charioteers and such. Yet I bought this one even though I’d got it from the library and read it a bunch, because it is so, so good and I couldn’t stand to go another day without having constant access to it. The story is amazing, the setting is fantastic, the new characters add excellent stakes and drama. Nubia, oh my god Nubia in this story gets to shine. And the little Lupus paragraph at the end breaks my heart every time. Just 100/10 book, writing this makes me want to go and re-read it right now. My absolute favourite
Congrats on releasing another animated short! The animation is so smooth and expressive! but i have to ask. Did you redesign Mordecai’s face? It’s so subtle I had to rewatch it but he looks cuter than in the pilot. Is it because hes younger and we’re seeing him in a different context? Or are you redesigning him for the series and if so are any other characters getting a makeover?
Hey, thanks very much!
We didn't redesign his face, but there are a few things contributing to him looking a bit different.
We went with a deliberately "slicked back" look for him in the pilot so that he'd appear distinctly older and more put-together than Rocky, Freckle, and Ivy. But for "Stratagem" and some other things we're working on, set at an earlier point in the 1920s, we've reintroduced his hair fluff up front. For such a small change, it does tend to soften him a lot.
His clothes. In the pilot, he's wearing a big, turned up collar that looks almost like a cobra hood. His collar is much smaller in Stratagem, so you can see his otherwise not-very-imposing frame.
He's far more, er, animated in the recent animation. His eyes are more wide open and he's a great deal more expressive, with agitated hand gestures. This was also deliberate. He's really putting on the sangfroid-face in the pilot. In the new short, he's revealing a much less constrained side.
----
About other characters, yes, we've been fleshing out their reference sheets a bit more and spit-polishing their designs. The band members have had an overhaul to make them a lot more distinct and detailed, and Viktor has also undergone some rework to address some animation issues we encountered with him in the pilot. Lots of costume changes too.
You can see a lot of the changes I described above and a lot of new character designs for Season 1 on the Lackadaisy Patreon.
A/n: I love this webtoon so much, I'm so excited for this series to come out.
Mordecai never in his life ever thought this would happen to him. That he would be a father? That someone would even want to be with him, yet here you, pregnant with his child, sleeping your worries away.
He was doing his best to adjusting to this life style, he did not live the most normal life. He could handle protecting you, you weren't stupid, you didn't go into places where you didn't belong. But lids...kids were messy, god forbid his child got taken because someone was trying to get to him.
Mordecai had his doubts when you first told him of course. He wasn't good around women, hell he was still trying to wrap his mind around how he landed you, how you even fell for him. He was scared, terrified even. What if he wasn't a good father, what if he screwed up?
And yet watching you sleeping, he can't help but feel a mix of pride, happiness. He loved you, he could do this. Sliding off his glasses he laid in the bed next to you. His tail wrapping around your waist to hold you close.
Shifting your body, you turned so your face was pressed into his chest. "When did you get home?"
"Just now, go back to sleep. You need your rest."
Scoffing, you opened one of your eyes grinning for a moment. "I'll be fine...It's cute seeing you worry over something so small." You teased.
Sighing, he pressed his nose into your neck keeping you close. "Please, get some sleep."
"Fine, fine"Still smiling you pressed a small kiss to his cheek then nuzzled further into his chest. "You know Mordecai. You have nothing to sorry about, I know you'll be a wonderful father, you're already a wonderful husband."
A small snort escaped his lips though he could not help but smile holding you. "I believe you."
How could he not? You meant everything to him and so will this child.
There’s a new crossover series between Amphibia, The Owl House, and Regular Show. There’s an entire episode about Mordecai and Rigby being artifact hunters.
