Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Prince of Egypt
Tumblr media
Papa Bless (literally) its time for me to talk about one of my favorite animated movies, nay, one of my favorite MOVIES ever made. Prince of Egypt is a work of art. Hands down, it is one of the most incredible movies I have ever seen. I'm not even religious (I did grow up Christian and am now a Filthy Heathen but that's beside the point). The real point is that this movie is one that I think can be enjoyed by anyone reguardless of religion. At its core, they took a simple biblical story and turned it into something with raw passion and emotion and art. And I simply adore it.
Tumblr media
Every time I watch this movie, its such an experience for me. I always fall in love with new things, from the fantastic character designs, to the insanely lovely animation to the beautiful songs and score to the way the story is told and the emotions the characters go through with it. Everything in this movie feels huge, weighty, and important. It's very respectful to its source material while making changes that make it work better as a film, particularly the brotherly dynamic between Moses and Rameses that adds a whole new layer of drama onto the story.
Tumblr media
As for that story, we all know the Exodus story by now so I'll spare you on that and discuss the things the movie does on its own. That dynamic between Moses and Rameses is at the heart of the movie and it really is just a devestating tragedy to watch them break apart and become enemies because of the huge responsibilities thrust onto both of their shoulders. The fact that tragedy ends on such a heartcrushing note too its just... god. (literally god, get it? cause this is all his fault lol jk ok)
Moses is fantastically written, a great main character to follow who has compelling drama, at first about his true identity and how he struggles to comes to terms with it and then grappling with having to oppose Rameses to set the Hebrews free. Rameses himself may just be one of Dreamworks best villains, you really do feel bad for him but you also know he's bringing so much of this suffering on himself because of his own stubborn pride. The rest of the cast is also fantastic, Tzipporah is lovely and really fun, Miriam is an absolute sweetheart, Aaron is a sassy little loser but I love how he comes around in the end, and well, God is God (the burning bush scene tho, can we talk about that? fucking INSANE)
Tumblr media
The MUSIC man, each song is SO damn good its hard for me to even pick a favorite. Deliver Us is such a strong opening, a wonderful way to set the stage that makes the stakes feel high right from the start. All I Ever Wanted is a great way to show the life Moses always knew cracking from the inside out. Through Heaven's Eyes is just a bop with a lovely message about change and growth. Playing with the Big Boys is delightfully sinister and the Plagues, oh GOD THE PLAGUES???? INSANE MAN SO DRAMATIC AND INTENSE AND THE IMAGERY IS JUST??!?!?! BRUH! When You Believe might be my favorite though, it starts out somber but grows into this hopeful triumph of excitement and relief and its absolutely beautiful.
Tumblr media
This movie is so beautiful to look at too! The composition of some of these shots, the storyboarding, the facial expressions, the set pieces, the movement of the animation, its all so expertly crafted, so entrancing to watch every second of it. Like I said at the start, this movie truly is an utter work of art in every sence of the word.
Tumblr media
I've been gushing about this movie for long enough I think, but I can't help it! It's honestly that good! And its so hard to believe that it came hot off the heels of a trash heap like Antz. Like bruh how were they cooking that shit and the godsend that is Prince of Egypt at the same time??? Insane, utterly insane. This studio is ridiculous.
Anyway, Prince of Egypt is the GOAT and I will fight you if you disagree.
Overall Rating: 10/10
Verdict: Tzipporah marry me pls

The Church of St James and St Paul in Marton, Cheshire is one of the oldest timber-framed churches in Europe.
The church was founded in 1343 by Sir John de Davenport and his son Vivian. Two damaged stone effigies can be found in the gloomy space below the tower, 14th century knights bearing the Davenport crest, thought to be the church’s founders.
The short, shingled belfry was added in 1540. I was losing the light by this point in the day, but the interior of the tower annexe is filled with large timber beams like the towers of St Mary’s in Mundon, Essex and St Mary the Virgin in Pembridge, Herefordshire.
Significant works were carried out in the 19th century. The roof was lowered in 1804 and restorations took place in 1850 and 1871.
The first restoration, carried out by J. M. Derick, changed the windows to let more light into the interior. The second restoration was by William Butterfield and focussed on the tower, adding the west entrance and tidying up the structural beams.
A third restoration took place in 1930, renewing some wall sections and the shingles of the tower, and extending the east wall of the chancel with modern brick. The rest of the structure is the original medieval building, close-studded oak beams with wattle and daub infill.
The 1930 restoration uncovered a medieval wall painting on the west wall of the nave. Divided into eight large panels by the timber frame, it is believed the partial fresco depicts the Last Judgement. Two paintings by 18th century artist Edward Penney can be found on the west wall, showing Aaron and Moses with the ten Commandments.

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace. And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near; carry your brothers away from the front of the sanctuary and out of the camp.” So they came near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said. And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons, “Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, and do not tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning that the Lord has kindled. And do not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses. “Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses.”” Leviticus‬ ‭10‬:‭1‬-‭7‬, ‭9‬-‭11‬

"The remark about worship in female attire has evoked the assumption that Onias was open to an active involvement of female priests in the worship in his temple. Thus, P. Richardson and V. Heuchan, have interpreted the Talmudic reference to women’s clothing and drew a connection to JIGRE 84 that mentions a “Marin the priestess” in the context of “Land of Onias” and thus with Onias’ Temple. P. Richardson and V. Heuchan conjecture that the Talmudic passage preserved a hint of rabbinic opposition to an unorthodox practice of the cultic in Onias’ Temple. Cf. P. Richardson and V. Heuchan, “Jewish Voluntary Associations in Egypt and the Roles of Women,” in Voluntary Associations in the Graeco-Roman World, ed. by J. S. Kloppenborg and S. G.Wilson (London: Routledge, 1996) 283." (Page 152 of Priests in Exile by Meron M. Piotrkowski)
"Contra Richardson’s and Heuchan’s view, who one-sidedly claim that female priests were active at Onias’ Temple. Their assumption is based on known parallels from Egypt sacral culture in which (female) priestesses took an active part in the worship in Hellenistic and native shrines. They reinforce their argument by pointing out that already in the Bible one encounters precedents in which Jewish women performed cultic acts. Richardson and Heuchan refer to Exod 38:8; 1 Sam 2:22 (two texts that mention women serving at the entrance of the ‘Tent of Meeting’); Num 26:59 (that mentions Amram’s wife, Yoḥevet, the daughter of Levi and Miriam, Aaron’s and Moses’ sister) and 1 Chron 6:3 (again mentioning Miriam alongside her brothers as descendants of Levi, i.e. priests). Based on these cases Richardson and Heuchan argue that the worship at Onias’ Temple stood within the same tradition. Accordingly, since Onias’ Temple was detached from Jerusalem, the possibility remains that the Oniad Jews pursued a unique tradition of interpretation of the biblical text, thus adopting the tradition of Miriam as priestess that served as a model for the women of the Oniad community. Like Miriam, the women of the Oniad community too were closely connected to Egypt. As such, they could have adopted the practice of a female priesthood as in Hellenistic and native sanctuaries (for e.g., the priestesses of Isis, or Anubis). The involvement of female priestesses in the worship conducted at these temples was mostly confined to music and the musical background of the worship, similar to the tasks the Levites fulfilled in the Jerusalem Temple. On the Levitical functions in the Temple, see E. P. Sanders, Judaism: Practice & Belief 63BCE-66 CE (London and Philadelphia: Trinity Press International, 1992) 77–92. Richardson and Heuchan remark too that Marin’s inscription does not elucidate what kind of role she might have played during the service in Onias’ Temple. They speculate that she might have been responsible for music, pouring libations and/or preparing sacrifices, which are common practices performed by female priests in Egyptian shrines. They argue that enough time would have passed since the establishment of the Oniad Temple (sometime in the middle of the 2ndcentury BCE) to allow for the forces of assimilation to work and to have allowed for such a shift in temple practices. In the context of the debate regarding assimilation, we may note that ca. 100 years passed since the establishment of the Oniad Temple and the point Marin would have been old enough to be actively involved in the priestly service at the temple (she was born in 77 BCE)." The Story Of Korah In The Bible
Tumblr media
I am thankful that the Bible included the story of Korah. He led a group of people to rebel against God’s chosen leaders. Nobody should want a similar outcome duplicated in their lives. One day Korah . . . incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly. Numbers 16:1-2 The theme of this story in the Bible point to the signs of jealousy and envy overtaking Korah. With those two character flaws spreading to others, he and his followers confronted Moses. They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the Lord, and he is with all of us.” Numbers 16:3 In other words, Korah was asking Moses and Aaron, “who do you think you are? What gives you the right to do what you are doing?” “What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the Lord’s people?” Numbers 16:3
How Moses Handled the Opposition in this Bible Story of Korah
At that moment, Moses had to decide how he would handle this situation. Korah had convinced this group of leaders to question Moses’ leadership and his authority. Moses on the other hand never wanted to be in this position in the first place. He made that point quite clear when God spoke to him out of the burning bush. But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11 God, however, assured Moses that He would go with him as he carried out this mission. God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.” Exodus 3:12 Therefore Moses knew without a shadow of a doubt that God had called him. He also knew the Lord gave him the authority to continue to fulfill His will. So without responding to them, he just fell face down to the ground. Maybe he whispered a prayer. Or maybe that was his way of not immediately reacting. He then came up with a solution. He said to Korah and his followers, “Tomorrow morning the Lord will show us who belongs to him and who is holy. The Lord will allow only those whom he selects to enter his own presence. Numbers 16:5
Tumblr media
Preparations to Enter God's Presence
The Bible continues this story with Moses telling Korah and company how to prepare to go before God. He also asked him why they weren’t satisfied with serving in the tabernacle. “Now listen, you Levites! Does it seem insignificant to you that the God of Israel has chosen you from among all the community of Israel to be near him so you can serve in the Lord’s Tabernacle and stand before the people to minister to them?  Numbers 16:8-9 Korah’s actions indicated a sure sign of discontentment. That comes when focusing on ourselves becomes more important than fulfilling God’s will.  It’s at that point, we tend to view our ministry as being less important than someone else’s. Which became the subject of the next question Moses asked him. Korah, he has already given this special ministry to you and your fellow Levites. Are you now demanding the priesthood as well? Numbers 16:10 After a few more accusations, Moses became angry. He told the Lord not to accept their grain offerings and he defended himself before God. So the next day Koran and the 250 leaders came to the entrance of the tabernacle. Aaron and Moses stood there too. While they were all there, Korah decided to make more trouble. Meanwhile, Korah had stirred up the entire community against Moses and Aaron, and they all gathered at the Tabernacle entrance. Numbers 16:19

God's Warning
The Bible says in this part of the story of the rebellion of Korah, God’s presence appeared. The Lord then spoke to Moses and Aaron . . . “Get away from all these people so that I may instantly destroy them!” And the Lord said to Moses, “Then tell all the people to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.” Numbers 16:21,23-24 The earth opened up. It swallowed Korah along with the other two and everyone else who was physically close to them. God also dealt with the 250 leaders as well. Then fire blazed forth from the Lord and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense. Numbers 16:35
How Does this Story in the Bible of Korah Relate to You?
People have gone to see movies with scenes like what we just read about and even worse. But I want you to know this story in the Bible of the death of Korah is real life. It can easily happen to any of us. Especially if we allow jealousy and envy to dominate our lives. They can also fuel us to question or undermine someone who God has called into the ministry. The earth probably won’t open up and swallow you, nor will fire fall from the sky. But anyone who rebels against the Lord will end up with an eternal rude awakening. “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Revelation21:8 Therefore live for the Lord daily. Seek to stay in the center of His will. Ask His forgiveness often and continually forgive others. Finally, pray for one another and always give thanks for everything. Lord, help us to see the severity of how discontentment can lead us away from you. We don’t want our story to end like what we read in the Bible about Korah. May we always be in the center of your will? 3rd Portion: Bamidbar(Numbers) 26:52 - 27:5
Chapter 26
52The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
53You shall apportion the Land among these as an inheritance, in accordance with the number of names.
54To the large [tribe] you shall give a larger inheritance and to a smaller tribe you shall give a smaller inheritance, each person shall be given an inheritance according to his number.
55Only through lot shall the Land be apportioned; they shall inherit it according to the names of their fathers' tribes.
56The inheritance shall be apportioned between the numerous and the few, according to lot.
57These were the numbers of the Levites according to their families: the family of the Gershonites from Gershon, the family of the Kohathites from Kohath, the family of the Merarites from Merari.
58These were the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites and Kehat begot Amram.
59The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, whom [her mother] had borne to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram, Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60Born to Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61Nadab and Abihu died when they offered up an unauthorized fire before the Lord.
62And those counted of them were twenty three thousand, every male aged one month and upward, for they were not counted among the children of Israel, since no inheritance was given them among the children of Israel.
63This was the census of Moses and Eleazar the kohen, who counted the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho.
64Among these there was no man who had been [included] in the census of Moses and Aaron when they counted the children of Israel in the Sinai desert.
65For the Lord had said to them, "They shall surely die in the desert," and no one was left of them but Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
Chapter 27
1The daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward, and his daughters' names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
2They stood before Moses and before Eleazar the kohen and before the chieftains and the entire congregation at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, saying,
3"Our father died in the desert, but he was not in the assembly that banded together against the Lord in Korah's assembly, but he died for his own sin, and he had no sons.
4Why should our father's name be eliminated from his family because he had no son? Give us a portion along with our father's brothers. "
5So Moses brought their case before the Lord.

Old Testament - Miracle 33
Destroyed by Plague
On the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the LORD.” And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces. And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun.” So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped. Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the affair of Korah. And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped. - Numbers 16:41-50

MUHAMMAD'S JOURNEY TO HEAVEN
19
Al-Fattâ'h! praise the "Opener!" and recite The marvels of that "Journey of the Night."*
OUR Lord Muhammad lay upon the hill
Saf, whereby the holy city stands,
Asleep, wrapped in a robe of camels* wool.
Dark was the night that Night of grace and still;
When all the seven spheres, by God's commands,
Opened unto him, splendid and wonderful!
For Gabriel, softly lighting, touched his side,
Saying, "Rise, thou enwrapped one! come and see
The things which be beyond. Lo! I have brought
Borak, the horse of swiftness; mount and ride!"
Milk-white that steed was, with embroidery
Of pearls and emeralds in his long hair wrought.
Hooved like a mule he was, with a man's face;
His eyes gleamed from his forelock, each a star
Of lucent hyacinth; the saddle-cloth
Was woven gold, which priceless work did grace! ,
The lightning goeth not so fast or far
As those broad pinions which he fluttered forth.
One heel he smote on Safa, and one heel
On Sinai where the dint is to this day.
* Cf. Koran, xvii. chapter "Of the Night Journey."
Next at Jerusalem lie neighed. Our Lord,
Descending with th' Archangel there, did kneel
Making the midnight prayer ; afterwards they
Tethered him to the Temple by a cord.
"Ascend!" spake Gabriel; and behold! there fell
Out of the sky a ladder bright and great,
"Whereby, with easy steps, on radiant stairs,
They mounted past our earth and heaven and hell
To the first sphere, where Adam kept the gate,
Which was of vaporous gold and silvery squares
Here thronged the lesser Angels : some took charge
To fill the clouds with rain and speed them round,
And some to tend live creatures; for what's born
Hath guardians there in its own shape : a large
Beauteous white cock crowed matins, at the sound
Cocks in a thousand planets hailed the morn.
Unto the second sphere by that white slope
Ascended they, whereof Noah held the key;
And two-fold was the throng of Angels here;
But all so dazzling glowed its fretted cope,
Burning with beams, Muhammad could not see
What manner of celestial folk were there.
The third sphere lay a thousand years beyond
If thou should'st journey as the sun-ray doth,
But in one FdtihaJi clomb they thitherward.
David and Solomon in union fond
Ruled at the entrance, keeping Sabaoth
Of ceaseless joy. The void was paven hard
With paven work of rubies if there be
Jewels on earth to liken unto them
Which had such color as no goldsmith knows
And here a vast Archangel they did see,
"Faithful of God "
his name, whose diadem
Was set with peopled stars; wherefrom arose
Lauds to the glory of God, filling the blue
With lovely music, as rose-gardens fill
A land with essences; and young stars, shaking
Tresses of lovely light, gathered and grew
Under his mighty plumes, departing still
Like ships with crews and treasure, voyage-making.
So came they to the fourth sphere, where there sate
Enoch, who never tasted death; and there
Behind its portal awful Azrael writes;
The shadow of his brows compassionate
Made night across all worlds; our Lord felt fear,
Marking the stern eyes and the hand which smites.
For always on a scroll he sets the names
Of new-born beings, and from off the scroll
He blotteth who must die; and holy tears
Roll down his cheeks, recording all our shames
And sins and penalties; while of each soul
Monker and Nakir reckon the arrears.
Next, at the fifth sphere's entry, they were 'ware
Of a door built in sapphire, having graven
Letters of flashing fire, the faith unfolding,
"THERE IS NO GOD SAVE GOD." Aaron sate there
Guarding the "region of the wrath of Heaven;"
And Israfil behind, his trumpet holding,
His trumpet holding which shall wake the dead
And slay the living all his cheek puffed out,
Bursting to blow ; for none knows Allah's time,
Nor when the word of judgment shall be said:
And darts, and chains of flame, lay all around,
Terrible tortures for th' ungodly's crime.
When to the sixth sphere passed they, Moses sped
Its bars of chrysoprase, and kissed our Lord,
And spake full sweet, "Prophet of Allah! thou
More souls of Ismael's tribes to truth hast led,
Than I of Isaak's." Here the crystal sword
Of Michael gave the light they journeyed through.
But at the seventh sphere that light which shone
Hath not an earthly name, nor any voice
Can tell its splendor, nay, nor any ear
Learn, if it listened; only he alone
Who saw it, knows how there th' elect rejoice,
Isa, and Ibrahim, and the souls most dear.
And he, the glorious regent of that sphere,
Had seventy thousand heads ; and every head
As many countenances; and each face
As many mouths; and in each mouth there were
Tongues seventy thousand, whereof each tongue said,
Ever and ever,
"Praise to Allah ! praise "
Here, at the bound, is fixed that lotus- tree
SEDRA, which none among the Angels pass;
And not great Gabriel's self might farther wend:
Yet, led by presences too bright to see,
Too high to name, on paths like purple glass
Our Lord Muhammad journeyed to the end.
Alone ! alone ! through hosts of Cherubim
Crowding the infinite void with whispering vans,
From splendor unto splendor still he sped;
Across the " Lake of Gloom" they ferried him,
And then the " Sea of Glory:" mortal man's
Heart cannot hold the wonders witnessed.
So to the "Region of the Veils" he came,
Which shut all times off from eternity,
The bars of being where thought cannot reach :
Ten thousand thousand are they, walls of flame
Lambent with loveliness and mystery,
Ramparts of utmost heaven, having no breach.
Then he SAW GOD! our Prophet saw THE THRONE!
O Allah! let these weak words be forgiven!
Thou, the Supreme, "the Opener," spake at last;
The Throne! the Throne! he saw; our Lord alone!
Saw it and heard ! but the verse falls from heaven
Like a poised eagle, whom the lightnings blast.
And Gabriel waiting by the tree he found;
And Borak, tethered to the Temple porch ;
He loosed the horse, and 'twixt its wings ascended.
One hoof it smote on Zion's hallowed ground,
One upon Sinai ; and the day-star's torch
Was not yet fading when the journey ended.
Al-Fattâ*'h! "Opener!" we say Thy name, and worship Thee alway.

Numbers 27: God Tells Moses To Give Zelophehad's Daughters His Property And Their Inheritance
1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward
2 and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said,
3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord,
6 and the Lord said to him,
7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.
8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter.
9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”
Joshua to Succeed Moses
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites.
13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,
14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)
15 Moses said to the Lord,
16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community
17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.
19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.
20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.
21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”
22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.
23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Do Not Eat Meat With Blood in It. From Leviticus 17: 1-7.
Tumblr media
Blood is happiness. Like blood, happiness provides life to the body. If a person is happy they do not need to sacrifice. If there is unhappiness or iniquity, the Kosher sacrifice must be observed. The objective of all observances in the Torah is first and foremost the prevention of bloodshed.
To avoid spilling blood is the best way to observe Kosher which on the surface makes it look as if Kosher is not taking place.
17 The Lord said to Moses,
2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons. Speak to all the Israelites. Tell them, ‘Here is what the Lord has commanded. He has said,
3 “Suppose someone sacrifices an ox, a lamb or a goat. They sacrifice it in the camp or outside of it.
4 They do it instead of bringing the animal to the entrance to the tent of meeting. They sacrifice it instead of giving it as an offering to me in front of my holy tent. Then they will be thought of as guilty of spilling blood. Because they have done that, they must be separated from their people.
5 The Israelites are now making sacrifices in the open fields. But they must bring their sacrifices to the priest. They must bring them to me at the entrance to the tent of meeting. There they must sacrifice them as friendship offerings.
6 The priest must splash the blood against my altar. It is the altar at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He must burn the fat. Its smell will please me.
7 The Israelites must stop offering any of their sacrifices to statues of gods that look like goats. When they offer sacrifices to those statues, they are not faithful to me. This is a law for them that will last for all time to come.” ’
Happy persons are not sacrificed they are allowed to enter the front of the temple; they are not presented as sin offerings. Instead they are considered friendship offerings, which are the most expedient way to prevent bloodshed on the earth.
Splashing the blood on the altar is how one ends the cycle of sin and restoring ritual purity; if one's sources of happiness are mistakenly coming from violations of the Decrees etc. then one must give up that happiness by splashing the blood.
Gods that look like goats are thee worst. One may not find more happiness in a goat than one finds in Gott.
Sacrifice of the fat is how one resolves one's confusion over these things. Fat is one's attitude towards life. Attitude like fat flavors the meat. To sacrifice in order to possess a pleasing attitude is the right thing to do.

Exodus 32 The Golden Calf
The Israelites were impatient with Moses being up on the mountain,  they wondered what had happened to him. So they asked Aaron to make them some gods to lead them.
Aaron told the people to give him their gold earings, he melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. The people worshipped the calf, sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.
On the mountain, God told Moses what was happening to the people. He was filled with anger and wanted to destroy the people for their rebellion. But He would make Moses, into a great nation. Moses pleaded with God not to destroy His people so God changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people.
Moses turned and went down the mountain. He held in his hands the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. These tablets were God's work; the words on them were written by God himself. He burned with anger when he saw the calf and the dancing. took the calf they had made and burned it. Then he ground it into powder, threw it into the water, and forced the people to drink it.
Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and called those who had been loyal and obeyed God. The Levites detached from the rest of the group and they were told to kill those who were against the Lord.

This is all from Wikipedia as well to highlight that Jesus Christ wasn't being antisemitic or a traitor, he was being a freedom fighter for all native Israelis against actual Roman-loyalist traitors:
In Jerusalem, Herod introduced foreign forms of entertainment, and erected a golden eagle at the entrance of the Temple, which suggested a greater interest in the welfare of Rome than of Jews. Herod's taxes garnered a bad reputation: his constant concern for his reputation led him to make frequent, expensive gifts, increasingly emptying the kingdom's coffers, and such lavish spending upset his Jewish subjects.
The two major Jewish sects of the day, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, both showed opposition to Herod. The Pharisees were discontented because Herod disregarded many of their demands with respect to the Temple's construction.
The Sadducees, who were closely associated with priestly responsibilities in the Temple, opposed Herod because he replaced their high priests with outsiders from Babylonia and Alexandria, in an effort to gain support from the Jewish Diaspora.
Herod's outreach efforts gained him little, and at the end of his reign anger and dissatisfaction were common amongst Jews. Heavy outbreaks of violence and riots followed Herod's death in many cities, including Jerusalem, as pent-up resentments boiled over.
The scope of the disturbances sparked hopes that the Jews of Judea might some day overthrow the Roman overlords, hopes reawakened decades later in the outbreak of the First Jewish-Roman War in 66 CE.

Reading 1
NM 20:1-13
The whole congregation of the children of Israel arrived in the desert of Zin in the first month, and the people settled at Kadesh. It was here that Miriam died, and here that she was buried.
As the community had no water, they held a council against Moses and Aaron. The people contended with Moses, exclaiming, “Would that we too had perished with our kinsmen in the LORD’s presence! Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this desert where we and our livestock are dying? Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place which has neither grain nor figs nor vines nor pomegranates? Here there is not even water to drink!” But Moses and Aaron went away from the assembly to the entrance of the meeting tent, where they fell prostrate.
Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them, and the LORD said to Moses, “Take your staff and assemble the community, you and your brother Aaron, and in their presence order the rock to yield its waters. From the rock you shall bring forth water for the congregation and their livestock to drink.” So Moses took his staff from its place before the LORD, as he was ordered. He and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock, where he said to them, “Listen to me, you rebels! Are we to bring water for you out of this rock?” Then, raising his hand, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff, and water gushed out in abundance for the people and their livestock to drink. But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you were not faithful to me in showing forth my sanctity before the children of Israel, you shall not lead this community into the land I will give them.”
These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel contended against the LORD, and where the LORD revealed his sanctity among them.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9
R./ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him. R./ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides. R./ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice: “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, Where your fathers tested me; they tested me though they had seen my works.” R./ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Gospel
MT16:13-23
Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

7th portion- Parasha Balak (english)
Tumblr media
7th Portion: (Numbers 24:14 - 25:9)
¡Shabat Shalom!. I share with you the last portion of this parasha that has been very good to study again. Let us stand firm, with emuna in the Creator so that nothing makes us waver from what we really are: children of the Eternal.
Numbers Chapter 24
14And now, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you...what this people will do to your people at the end of days."
15He took up his parable and said, "The word of Balaam, son of Beor, the word of a man with an open eye.
16The word of the one who hears God's sayings and perceives the thoughts of the Most High; who sees the vision of the Almighty, fallen yet with open eyes.
17I see it, but not now; I behold it, but not soon. A star has gone forth from Jacob, and a staff will arise from Israel which will crush the princes of Moab and uproot all the sons of Seth.
18Edom shall be possessed, and Seir shall become the possession of his enemies, and Israel shall triumph.
19A ruler shall come out of Jacob, and destroy the remnant of the city."
20When he saw Amalek, he took up his parable and said, "Amalek was the first of the nations, and his fate shall be everlasting destruction."
21When he saw the Kenite, he took up his parable and said, "How firm is your dwelling place, and your nest is set in a cliff.
22For if Kain is laid waste, how far will Assyria take you captive?"
23He took up his parable and said: Who can survive these things from God?
24Ships will come from the Kittites and afflict Assyria and afflict those on the other side, but he too will perish forever."
25Balaam arose, went, and returned home, and Balak went on his way.
Numbers Chapter 25
1Israel settled in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of the Moabites.
2They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and prostrated themselves to their gods.
3Israel became attached to Baal Peor, and the anger of the Lord flared against Israel.
4The Lord said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and hang them before the Lord, facing the sun, and then the flaring anger of the Lord will be removed from Israel.
5Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you shall kill the men who became attached to Baal Peor.
6Then an Israelite man came and brought the Midianite woman to his brethren, before the eyes of Moses and before the eyes of the entire congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
7Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the kohen saw this, arose from the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.
8He went after the Israelite man into the chamber and drove [it through] both of them; the Israelite man, and the woman through her stomach, and the plague ceased from the children of Israel.
9Those that died in the plague numbered twenty four thousand.

Tuesday, Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: White: A (1))
(Readings for the feria (Tuesday))
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Tuesday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading Numbers 12:1-13 'How have you dared to speak against my servant Moses?'
Miriam, and Aaron too, spoke against Moses in connexion with the Cushite woman he had taken. (For he had married a Cushite woman.) They said, ‘Has the Lord spoken to Moses only? Has he not spoken to us too?’
The Lord heard this. Now Moses was the most humble of men, the humblest man on earth. Suddenly, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron and Miriam, ‘Come, all three of you, to the Tent of Meeting.’ They went, all three of them, and the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tent. He called Aaron and Miriam and they both came forward. The Lord said, ‘Listen now to my words: If any man among you is a prophet I make myself known to him in a vision, I speak to him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses: he is at home in my house; I speak with him face to face, plainly and not in riddles, and he sees the form of the Lord. How then have you dared to speak against my servant Moses?’
The anger of the Lord blazed out against them. He departed, and as soon as the cloud withdrew from the Tent, there was Miriam a leper, white as snow! Aaron turned to look at her; she had become a leper. Aaron said to Moses: ‘Help me, my lord! Do not punish us for a sin committed in folly of which we are guilty. I entreat you, do not let her be like a monster, coming from its mother’s womb with flesh half corrupted.’
Moses cried to the Lord, ‘O God,’ he said ‘please heal her, I beg you!’

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 50(51):3-7,12-13
R/ Have mercy on us, Lord, for we have sinned.
Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.
R/ Have mercy on us, Lord, for we have sinned.
My offences truly I know them; my sin is always before me Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done.
R/ Have mercy on us, Lord, for we have sinned.
That you may be justified when you give sentence and be without reproach when you judge, O see, in guilt I was born, a sinner was I conceived.
R/ Have mercy on us, Lord, for we have sinned.
A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit.
R/ Have mercy on us, Lord, for we have sinned.

Gospel Matthew 14:22-36 Jesus walks on the water.
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’
Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood and took all that were sick to him, begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched it were completely cured.

First Reading 1 Corinthians 2:1-10 The wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory.
Brothers, when I came to you, it was not with any show of oratory or philosophy, but simply to tell you what God had guaranteed. During my stay with you, the only knowledge I claimed to have was about Jesus, and only about him as the crucified Christ. Far from relying on any power of my own, I came among you in great ‘fear and trembling’ and in my speeches and the sermons that I gave, there were none of the arguments that belong to philosophy; only a demonstration of the power of the Spirit. And I did this so that your faith should not depend on human philosophy but on the power of God.
But still we have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him. These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 95(96):1-3,7-8,10

R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and power; give the Lord the glory of his name.

Gospel Luke 9:57-62 'I will follow you wherever you go'.
As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’ Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’
