She’s a Gem - Vince Dunn

Shoutout to @cellythefloshie for gushing about this man, and encouraging this write. Hope everyone enjoys it!

Vince bought her some sort of sparkly gem for every major occasion that happened between the two. The tradition started after he won Lord Stanley, because she deserved something shiny. Paper rings were what he made her on every date leading up to the first gem. The St. Louis 2018-2019 team won the Stanley cup. He got his Stanley Cup and the ring to go along with it. He bought her Sapphires. This was the first major gift he ever gave her. The two only had been dating a little under a year when he did this. He said it was because she needed to rock something blue to go along with his gear. She wore the set every game, even during the bubble series. It made her feel closer to him, even though he was in Toronto, and FaceTimes were the only form of face to face either got of each other. Her shadow box with the paper rings he made her sitting next to the new box containing her first gem.

When news broke he was going to Seattle during the expansion, she was the first one to cheer on the new opportunity, even if that turned them long distance again. In the bubble, she moved home to Florida to be around her family. Due to the world turning back to some weird level of normal, the couple was allowed to see each other again. He wasn’t in the bubble anymore. He presented her with Aquamarines to match his new team’s jersey color. “You need to be able to coordinate correctly, loves,” he explained. A small promise to her that she had his heart. Her box of paper rings, more added to the collection of both because again he continued the original tradition for every date. She took the move to Seattle right before the fall season, right before the hockey season started up. She had been out of the Florida heat for a while, but her wardrobe was bright, cheery, Key West colorations. What did he get her? Pink Ethiopian opals. They reminded him of her so much, matching her personality (and her clothes). October 23, 2021 - Vince Dunn scores his first goal as a defensemen for the Seattle Kraken. The following day, he took her out and bought her black pearls. “What? I can’t celebrate my first goal with a new team by spoiling my hunny with some new jewelry?” “I’m not saying you can’t, but Vince this is about you!” “And it wouldn’t be for me without my number one cheering me on from the sidelines.” A paper ring adorning her ring finger at that time. “Vince Dunn! You better not tell your mother you just said I’m your number one! She’ll be heartbroken!” ‘Ha,’ he thought. His mother would be estatic, knowing that there was good reason behind that statement.

She landed a new job in Seattle, finally, after being out there for a couple of months. Peruvian blue opals for her new job, and because it was another reason for him to gift her with something to reminder her of him. “What? Can’t spoil my girl?” “Vin, it’s your birthday celebration!”

“So? My beautiful girlfriend will now have something to wear and think about me while she rocks the new job!” She rolled her eyes, and thanked him again. The opals came in back to back sets, along with the pearls, due to the fact that their birthdays were days apart from each other. That paper ring collection larger than imagined when the tradition started. He couldn’t resist giving her options and reminders of him, every major chance he could. Whenever she wore them, it made his heart swell with pride. She loved it because he took the time to choose each item, each one holding so much meaning to their relationship. Maybe one day these would be passed down to their children, and then their children, and so on. The two had talked multiple times, at length, for the future, what it held for the couple - marriage, children, a real house. Over the off season break, he put his next plan of what celebration the two would have. The biggest decision for him. That ring. Not her paper rings, not the other rings that matched the sets of jewelry previously gifted. He had been giving it thoughts for a year now. First season completed in Seattle, he was ready for that next step with her. She donned his name multiple times for years, stitched into all the jerseys. She had stuck through it all with him. Every twist, turn, bump, and loop-de-loop life threw at them. Glued to his side. The ups and downs, highs and lows, every moment. That old box of paper rings proving every day their commitment. He knew she kept them all. He finally settled on the perfect ring for her. A 3.5 karat diamond with a titanium band. Classic, with minor flare. A little more flashy than the others in her now decent size collection, but she deserves the attention. The most important piece she’d own.

He found it by accident while out with the boys back in Toronto. Home for him is with her, no matter where they are. The group had popped into an antique based shop, and as she was more of a timeless, classic girl, he took a peek at what the case held. Nestled in red velvet, sat the ring. Then and there he saw her with that particular one adorning her finger. A little more shiny and sparkling, definitely a conversation starter. Similar to her grandmother’s ring that she said she adored growing up. The marquise cut, flower set diamond ring. Immediately he rang his mother, followed by her mother. Both were in agreeance. That ring was meant to be hers. Without a second thought, he bought it.

He had the girl of his dreams. He now had the perfect ring. All he needed was the perfect place to ask her that all so important question. She wasn’t the type to care for the general cheesy proposals. He needed something more meaningful, more unique.

He held onto that ring until their trip to the Bahamas with some of the other teammates that weren’t selected for the All Stars series. Sunset on the balcony of their hotel room with drinks, and a hidden bottle of champagne to celebrate with further after he asked. His phone hidden and recording to keep this moment forever.

Her back facing the camera, she was admiring the fire painted sky. He came up, hugging her from behind. The box in his pocket feeling heavier than before. “Hey hunny…you know that I love you, right?” He asked her.

“Yeah, of course I do loves. Why do you ask?”

He was already nervous, a little giddy even. He never thought he’d be there, ready to ask her to be by his side forever. He took her hand making her face him. “I say that because…be…because…I want to spend the until the end of time with you.” He drops down to one knee, his ocean tumbled curls falling into his eyes. “For years already you’ve worn my last name proudly across your back, but now I want you to share that last name. Our last name across your back. I want those future moments we’ve talked about time and time again. Will you marry me?” He pulled out the velvet box, that ring glinting, reflecting the scorching colors.

Her eyes sparkled with tears that threatened to tumble down her cheeks. “Of course I’ll marry you Vince!” He slipped the ring on, she pulled him in for a kiss.

After dinner and celebrations, back in the hotel room. “You picked a wonderful ring. Knowing me so well for this shiny one,” she commented to him. “But you know I’d marry you with paper rings if it came down to it. You’re the one I want.”

Summary: While out on patrol, Peter decided he might not be feeling all that well. Eventually, he decides to swing home but his stomach is iffy, his body aches and his brain is a bit sluggish. As a result, he ends up slamming face first into a billboard, creating an explosion of pain around his nose. His AI was quick to alert Mr. Stark and bring up an ETA countdown in the corner of his HUD. He can’t decide if he was annoyed or relieved.

It was relatively early in the evening when Peter left for patrol. He suited up and crawled through his window before shooting a web toward the nearest building. His stomach did a tiny backflip as he propelled himself forward but he didn’t think anything of it. May was out of town and he’d just eaten an entire double pepperoni pizza by himself. He’d not even bothered to take into account that he’d been feeling a tiny bit off all day. Whatever that was, he hadn’t quite been able to put his finger on it. Therefore he’d deemed himself healthy enough to go swing around the city helping the little guy.

By the time the clock struck eleven, Peter realized he’d not eaten anything since dinner. That was an odd occurrence on any given day. Generally speaking, no matter how much food he stuffed into his face he was always ready for more within a few hours time. Especially while he was active. He paused atop a water tower, crouched down so he could survey the city while trying to self-scrutinize. He wasn’t particularly hungry. He was oddly tired, though. And as he sat there, he started to realize his joints were starting to become a little achy. He was just starting to think that perhaps he should call it a night when his spider-sense flared beneath his skin. 

“Oh, come on!” he grumbled to himself. He immediately swung down, ignoring the way it made his head swim, and landed casually near the broken glass. “You’ve had all night to break into this store, but you waited until I was ready to go home to do it? Not cool, Man.” The bad guy whipped around brandishing a gun. Peter instantly shot a web to rip it from his hands. “You definitely do not need one of those. And while we're at it, you really shouldn't be taking stuff that doesn't belong to you.”

“What are you? My mother?” the bad guy asked while darting toward a jewelry case. He never made it there. Peter shot three more webs successfully sticking the guy to a fancy sunglasses display.

“You should probably look for a better side hustle. This one's clearly not working out for you,” he quipped before requesting his AI contact the local police.

As he climbed up the nearest building he sighed. “Time to go home, Karen,” he said, hoping nothing pressing would pop up on his way there. Fighting the one guy hadn't been much of a chore but his body was protesting it anyway. He wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and sleep for the next three days. He scratched the back of his neck where sweat was starting to collect and rolled his uncomfortable shoulders. “I’m not sure I’m feeling so hot.”

“On the contrary,” Karen cheerfully declared. “Your body temperature appears to be mildly elevated.”

“Great,” Peter clipped with faux enthusiasm. Though the presence of a fever, even a little one was enough to confirm what he already suspected. He was definitely sick. “Just what I wanted to hear.”

“My protocols don’t require me to inform you or anyone else of your body temperature unless it reaches one point five degrees above your average reading,” Karen replied. “Would you like for me to adjust that parameter to one degree?”

“No, Karen.” Despite the mildly uneasy feeling that was settling in his stomach, he chuckled.. “I was being sarcastic.”

A full minute passed before Karen responded. “Sarcasm has been noted.”

5 Years of Aloy

Continuing my character appreciation series, it's time we turned to Aloy.

August 2018. Pretty sure these were my first sketches of her.

I started Horizon Zero Dawn in May 2018 – I can always remember, because it was very appropriately Mother's Day. I think it was the first open world game I'd ever played, and I just found the whole universe to be so engrossing – a mix of postapocalyptic sci fi, the Iron Age, and cavemen vs dinosaurs.

September 2018 (trying to draw a Watcher)

But of course Aloy herself was a big part of the appeal. Can I relate to her? No, I'm not a genius prodigy with no friends. But I can admire Aloy – her smarts, her bravery, her utter fed-up-edness. She's always fun to follow alongside as a protagonist.

January 2019

Playing HZD fell around the same time I decided I wanted to get back to posting online regularly again. This 1/19 picture was one of the first things I posted. I was so surprised and pleased when Guerilla Games reblogged/favorited it on Tumblr and DeviantArt.

June 2019 (Aloy and her early concept horse)

So I associate Aloy and HZD with a pretty positive time in my life.

October 2019 (Aloy on an original unicorn machine, because why shouldn't we have unicorns in the postapocalypse?)

And one thing I especially liked about Forbidden West is that it highlighted Aloy's faults. There were times in Zero Dawn where things came so easily to Aloy and it felt like she was always unilaterally in the right, the one sane person in the universe. Forbidden West showed that she was far from perfect, and I welcomed that.

November 2019

Aloy is generous, self-sacrificial but still aware of her own worth; powerful, driven, and always planning ahead. But she's emotionally short-sighted, inflexible at times, and I think she could actually be cruel under the right circumstances. As with Elisabet, her altruism is a love that “bruises”.

She's intriguing and inspiring, so it comes as no surprise that I ended up drawing her a fair bit, especially given the fandom still felt so new and vibrant.

Drawing Aloy presents a number of consistent challenges for me. First of all, she's based on a real person. That makes it a lot harder for me to fall back on stylistic shortcuts. Even if I'm not a realistic artist, I still want to catch something of the “soul” of the actor and leave her recognizable.

March 2020

For another, all of Aloy's costumes are intricate. Sometimes I use references, but more often I'll put her in an outfit of my own design, throwing in elements from the different in-game tribes – as I think people would really do, if these cultures really existed. And certainly something that I think “Aloy Despite the Nora” would do.

February 2021

The designers at GG once congratulated themselves that one of Aloy's virtues is that she doesn't care about stereotypically “feminine” things like make up and clothes and jewelry. Along with that just being a bad take on a number of fronts, I've never believed it. The evidence doesn't bear it out.

June 2021 (I think this was right around the Forbidden West trailers started showing up)

The games themselves show Aloy wearing excessive jewelry and make up, tons of different outfits, being totally maximalist with her beads and layers and dinosaurish headdresses and now body paint on top of everything else (or under everything else). Is her appearance the most important thing in her life? No. Because she's currently saving the world. But it's clear she cares about her appearance and there's nothing wrong with that.

December 2021

Moving forward into Burning Shores (which I haven't played yet) and Horizon 3 (which I'm eagerly awaiting news on), I don't know what my specific hopes for Aloy are.

February 2022 (and then Forbidden West finally came out)

I want to see her remained flawed, but then I also want to see her grow. I'd to see her grow happier, whatever form that takes.

April 2022

Maybe a stress-free vacation sometime? I'd say the beach, but bad things happen when she goes to the beach.

May 2023

Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

These will only be reserved to Camilla when Charles becomes king. I don't know the protocol, so she might enter the Abbey bare-headed and exit with one of the Crowns reserved for queen consorts (my bet is the Queen Mom's as Charles was really close to her). Or she could enrer with the diamond diadem and exit with the Queen Consort state crown.

These 4 are 100% just Camilla as they are reserved to Queens. Not even Catherinne can wear them. Only when William is king she can.

Camilla will also retain in her rotation the Honeycomb tiara and the Dehli Durbar. 

Catherine will either use her loyal Lover Knots or could get Q Alexandra diamond Kokoshnik or Queen Mary fringe tiara (the ones you already posted). I don't see the Vladimir being loaned for the occation and I've a feeling it will be reserved to Camilla as it has both pearl and emerald so more useful than others.

The Girls of GB and NI is the Queen's most cherished and favourite one and we have come to identify the tiara with her. I have a feeling the Queen might leave it to Prince William, so Catherine can be the one to wear it after her death. She has let only Catherine wear very cherished pieces of jewelry (Philip's bracelet wedding gift is an example). I don't see Catherine wearing it at the coronation, unless the Queen has asked her to. Then she will comply.

As for Anne and Sophie they will wear one they have usage of and both Zara and Louise will wear one belonging to their mother.

I din't see Beatrice being borrowed the fringe. If Fergie isn't invited as she might not have remarried Andrew, then I could see Eugenie wearing her mom's and Beatrice wearing either the Greville emerald kokoshin (the one worn by her sister at her wedding) or the Strathmore tiara (it belonged to the Queen Mom). 

Meghan will be just be given the one she married in if she is invited. No attention for her in a new tiara. That solves the problem.

As for the Lotus and the Halo I think they are in Catherine's rotation (at least the Lotus) so I don't see them being borrowed on that day. 

The Aquamarine tiara and Burmese tiara (worn by the Queen) will enter Camilla's rotation. Not sure about the Burmese as she could leave a ruby tiara to Catherine since she would already have the Oriental circlet.

10. if they wear jewelry, what kind? do they prefer silver or gold? do they have a favorite gem?

Tiffany wears several rings, 2-3 on each hand. They're silver and gold, but cheap silver and gold, so they leave her fingers stained green. She also has rings for her autoharp, but she doesn't wear them all the time, because she doesn't want to lose them.

11. what do they have in common with you? how are they different? would you get along with them?

Tiffany and I have quite a bit in common, given she was originally made when I was going to play "Me, but D&D" with a bunch of friends (didn't happen, but I got to play her in another campaign). She and I have the same sun/moon/rising (Leo / Virgo / Aquarius), similar hangups about love and intimacy, we're both blonde, and pacifists. Similar taste in men too.

12. how long have they been around? do you know their birthday? is their birthday the day you made them or another day? what do they think of celebrating birthdays?

I started making Tiff in Nov 2021, but she really started developing early 2022. Her birthday is July 25 (Leo), which is not the day I made her. And she loves birthdays! We got to celebrate an NPC birthday in the campaign and she went all out (got him three gifts!), because surviving another year is worth celebrating. She's actually the least excited about her own birthday, but she still celebrates it.

13. what languages do they speak? how fluently?

She's not especially fluent in other languages besides English, but she knows a little Spanish (and might learn more from a future traveling partner). She knows a little French and Italian as well, but just from music.

14. are they any good with numbers?

She doesn't think she is, but her party all had lower Intelligence scores than her, so she's better than she would have thought.

15. how big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?

Her family is just her mom and brother, and her mother is dead. So now, just her brother. When she was a child, she lived with them and for a few years, her brother's father. And now she doesn't live with anyone, and she doesn't live anywhere except on the road.

Last episode was bad. So to balance it out, here’s a really good episode! It features a good throughline, introduces the Urara/Syrup friendship, delivers some great animation, and provides a banger of a new single from Urara’s seiyuu, Ise Mariya. Let’s dig in!

The Plot

One night while flying around, Syrup notices Urara crying alone. The next day at school, she’s all smiles with her friends until someone asks about her last audition. Her face falls for a moment as she admits it didn’t go well but she cheers up right away. Syrup is confused by her mood swing.

“You can’t have TWO emotions!”

At Eternal, Nebatakos is dancing and singing to Urara’s song “Extraordinary! The Door of Courage!” but Anacondy turns his headphones to stone, and then tells him to retrieve the Rose Pact.

Syrup catches Nozomi, Rin, Komachi, and Karen on their way home from school to tell them Urara was crying, and they should comfort her. They seem sympathetic but have other plans first. Syrup decries them for being cold.

Syrup goes to Natts House to tell Coco what he saw, but Coco just gives him directions to Urara’s studio so he can talk to her himself.

Syrup finds Urara rehearsing her new song at the studio. They talk, and he admits he saw her crying. Urara is a little embarrassed but turns the convo to him by asking about his dreams of the Cure Rose Garden. He explains it’s a distant memory and he wants to go back to see it for himself. Urara shows a picture of her late mother and says she’s the same, she wants to be an actress to experience what her mother did, as she only has fleeting memories from her youth.

Nebatakos shows up, still singing Urara’s last song (it’s unclear if he knows it was hers), and then turns a water tower into a Hoshiina. He admits he’s not after the Rose Pact right now, he just wants to blow off steam.

Urara transforms, and Nebatakos covers the area with fog and haze. Attacks come from all directions while he verbally badgers Cure Lemonade.

Syrup warns her that she can’t go on alone, but she explains that she won’t give up until she sees and experiences what her mother saw from up on that beautiful stage. She also says Syrup might similarly learn about himself by going to the Cure Rose Garden, and that’s what keeps him going, drawing a parallel.

Lemonade beats up Nebatakos but is overpowered by the Hoshiina. Then the others show up and talk about how precious her dream is, and they won’t let the villain insult that. Everyone holds off the monster as Lemonade says she wants to make people smile with her performance, and she defeats the Hoshiina with Prism Chain as Nebatakos retreats.

In the studio, the girls all give Urara some homemade jewelry as a gift (for once, not made with the bead maker). This is why they were busy earlier.

What I liked

In stark contrast to last episode, the artwork here is really good, by TV anime standards. It looks great, there’s some fantastic camerawork, and the animation is smooth.This is probably where the budget for the last several episodes went, possibly even including Milky Rose’s debut.

Urara experiencing the emotional highs and lows of trying to be a performer is really moving.

There’s a double narrative going on, while we see Urara doing well as a singer, most of the dialog is about her struggling as an actress, which is her primary goal. It also reflects the conflicting needs of the show and the brand. The brand wants to show off their bright young talent Ise Mariya with her new single. The show wants you to sympathize with Urara’s inability to get a part. They’re not in conflict, and in fact I think it’s interesting to contrast them in this way, showing how you can excel in one talent while struggling with another.

Urara’s motivations for wanting to be an actor, while they’ve been touched on before, are shed in a new light here. It’s her way of trying to get closer to her mother, since she can’t remember much about her otherwise. Drawing a parallel to Syrup’s quest for the Cure Rose Garden is clever.

This was a beautiful episode in every sense of the word. Gorgeous animation and a moving plot. It came together in one of the best episodes of the show so far. I’d have to go back and review what we’ve covered so far to say if it’s definitively the best, especially as I tend to speak in extremes a lot, but it’s up there. Even if it exists to promote a real-world character song, they do it in the context of a good story. Here’s to more episodes like this.

How Did Lindsay Cutshall and Jason Allen Die?

Lindsay Cutshall and Jason Allen had met each other in 2002 at the Appalachian Bible College in Beckley, West Virginia. Both devout Christians, the 22-year-old Lindsay hailed from Fresno, Ohio, while the 26-year-old Jason was from Zeeland, Michigan. They fell in love quickly, bonding over their Christian faith and their fondness for the outdoors. Within six weeks of knowing each other, they were engaged. In August 2004, the couple was working as counselors at Rock-N-Water, which was a Christian summer camp close to Coloma, California.

On August 13, they decided to take a spontaneous road trip to San Francisco, about a month before their planned wedding. It was during this trip that they would end up missing and eventually killed. When Lindsay’s mother was notified that the couple had not returned from their road trip, an extensive manhunt ensued. About five days after they left for their road trip, the couple was found by a helicopter pilot on a secluded part of Fish Head Beach, Jenner, California.

They were found still zipped up in their sleeping bags and were shot in the head once with a .45 caliber Marlin rifle, a rather uncommon gun. Police quickly ruled out robbery as a motive since Lindsay’s jewelry wasn’t missing and the car they traveled in was still there. There were no signs of a sexual assault either. Beyond that, the authorities were finding it difficult to zero in on a motive. The time of death was estimated to be either on the night of August 14 or the early morning of August 15.

The investigators speculated that the couple might have chosen to camp at the beach after realizing that there were no available rooms at the motel close by. As time passed, the police started to run out of credible leads. With no motive and unable to find the murder weapon, the trail ran cold. It was more than a decade later when the murders of Lindsay and Jason would be solved.

Who Killed Lindsay Cutshall and Jason Allen?

Shaun Gallon had long been someone the police had looked into regarding the couple’s killing. A self-proclaimed survivalist, he had multiple run-ins with the law. In fact, he was arrested just six days after the bodies were discovered, but on an unrelated weapons charge. Shaun’s father, David, had also told police that he had disposed of his son’s guns after Shaun had called him from prison to do so. In 2009, Shaun was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for shooting a man with a homemade bow and arrow. Over the years, the police found nothing to tie him to the murders, nonetheless.

In 2017, Shaun was accused of killing his brother, Shamus, with a rifle and was arrested as a result of that. During his questioning, he confessed to the killings of Lindsay and Jason. He told the police where he had hidden the spent shell casings from the crime scene. He stated that after he noticed the two sleeping on the beach, he went to his car to bring his rifle, came back, and shot them both at close range. He had also confessed to the attempted murder of someone else that he knew. In 2019, 40-year-old Shaun was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Suzanne Somers: The Actress Suzanne Somers was an American actress, author, singer, businesswoman, and health spokesperson who was born Suzanne Marie Mahoney in 1946 in San Bruno, California, to a gardener father and a medical secretary mother. Her childhood, she'd later say, had been turbulent. Her father was a person with alcohol use disorder who was abusive to her. After becoming pregnant with her son Bruce, she married Bruce Somers at 19. Three years later, the couple divorced, and she began modeling for The Anniversary Game to support herself.
