Viewing both the portrait and the photograph of the dress offers a distinct occasion to consider the artist, the subject, the dynamics of portraiture, and the culture of the time period during which both portrait and garment were produced. Now on view, the elegant blue and white evening dress designed by the Parisian couturier Callot Soeurs at the turn of the twentieth century and worn by Mrs. Abbott Lawrence Rotch for her portrait by John Singer Sargent. The premier international portraitist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Sargent flourished as a painter to the English upper class.

Painted in 1903 when the artist was in Boston supervising a mural project for the Boston Public Library Three-quarter-length seated portrait of Mrs. Abbott Lawrence Rotch wearing a white and blue gown with blue stole. A base of a pillar is behind her at left; she rests her right arm on a table covered with patterned textile.

Late night wip because it’s been a while since I’ve posted one, and also because I’m trying something new by going more “painterly”. It’s nowhere near finished, but I really like how it’s starting to look. Plus it’s always good practice!

If it looks familiar, it’s because it’s based on John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Mrs. Abbott Lawrence Rotch.

The girl is another oc of mine. Her name is Beatrice Forester, and she is Margo’s mother and Robert’s twin sister. This is supposed to be a painting of her when she was young.
