Day Seventy-Seven
The student council's holiday spirit week ended with pajama day today, which I thought was totally brilliant since it meant I got to go to work in flannel PJ bottoms and a hoodie. I was so comfortable and warm!
I spent the morning spreading holiday cheer (and candy canes) throughout the building, and receiving cards and gifts from various students, which was super sweet. I also sent a holiday email to my department, had a good chat with Mrs. T, and did some planning for after vacation. So that was fun and also rather productive.
And then I did my teaching!
My Global Studies students finished up the projects they started yesterday, and all four sections were great. Attendance was high, students were engaged, there was learning happening- and we still had fun chatting about holiday plans and eating candy canes while they worked! My APGOV students and I went over their most recent tests- I explained anything they wanted me to- and then, as a preview for what's coming after break, I showed the Crash Course Government episode on political ideologies, and had everyone re-take Pew Research's political typology quiz. They'd done it on the first day of class, too, and some of their results had changed since then, which was fascinating to discuss.
All classes were about ten minutes shorter than usual, and we had no flex block, in order to make time for everyone to attend a holiday concert put on by our band, drumline, and chorus. It's the first time we've had a holiday concert since before Covid (there was one planned last year, but we ended up having a snow day), so it's great to have that back, and give students the chance to support each other's talents and passions.
All in all? It was a super positive day, and great way to head into the holiday season!

Dreamworks has the best couples/relationships ever. The thing I've always admired about their couples is how mature and well-developed their relationship is. How one respects everything about their partner, gives each other time to build trust, and also helps each other become the best versions of themselves. They rarely (or even never) say "I love you" to each other because their actions are powerful enough to evoke that.
Also: the characters individually are some of the most well-developed characters in animation (yeah, I said it).
So yeah, these are just my thoughts. I just adore DW's characters and ships.

Note to a starting medical: when your patients finally decide that they're done running around saving every single creature they see - give em a double shot of sedatives and get yourself a good 15 minutes break

Star Trek canon is crazy.
Spock has seen a dragon. McCoy gains some new tonsils and also a southern accent. Spock climbing a tree. Literally everyone gets high at the same time. Kirk gets racist and then almost gets killed with a side table. This is all in one episode by the way.

I’m really in love with the SNW dress uniform design, and can't help but wonder how the TOS casts would look in them. So... Yes, That's how it goes. 🥂✨

Day One Hundred Twenty-One
One of the more amusing things about teaching both freshmen and seniors is when their paths cross in my classroom. Course selection is happening right now, and students need their current teachers to sign off on recommended courses for next year, so a lot of the freshmen came by during their lunches to ask me to sign their forms. That's when I'm teaching APGOV, so when they got to my door they just froze. Even when I ushered them in, they hovered near the front of the room, watching my seniors (who, at that point, were working on their Major Cases Projects and jamming to Ariana Grande's latest album) as if they were predatory animals who might strike at any moment.

In reality, since their projects are due tomorrow and they were locked in to get them done, I'm not sure they even really noticed the freshmen there.
Anyways.
The freshmen weren't my only visitors during that block. Both The Principal and Dean 1 came by to talk to me about a course selection issue related to economics (whether or not to open it to juniors as well as seniors), and get my opinion as department head so they could inform the rest of the faculty (I told them not next year due to staffing, but probably the year after). The Principal stuck around for a minute to ask the students about their projects, and chat about what they were learning, which I appreciated.
I signed a lot of course rec forms during Global Studies, too. I told students who were ready to get my signature to put their forms on their tables, and then went around and signed each one while they were reading. After they read for thirty minutes, I had them use the remainder of the block to do some research on events or issues that had come up in their books. The first time we did this (two weeks ago), I suggested topics; this time, I let them decide whether to continue with those or research something new (I'd say it was about 50-50). Then they shared what they'd learned, asked questions about things they still weren't clear about, asked questions about what other students had researched. It was cool.
I had a faculty meeting in the afternoon, and ended up talking to Mrs. T for a good long while afterwards, so then I just hung around until it was time for the winter sports awards. There was a big gathering in the auditorium first so that the major award winners could be announced, and then the teams went to different classrooms for the awarding of certificates and varsity letters. We had a great time celebrating our big, fun, record-breaking season. I'm not sure if I'll ever coach one quite like it again!
