#Multiclassing advice

the transgenderism of being born a sorcerer and becoming a paladin. when you were born, your wild magic was a problem for many. you faced awful comments about it. now that you swpre your oath, people start being unbelievably pissy about you not honing your natural magical skills if you absolutely have to become an adventurer. why can't you just use what you were born with? it suits you much better. you'll never be a real paladin. isn't it already a bit too late for that since you got a whole level in sorcery? seems wasteful... but your oath holds strong, and your innate abilities prove helpful in a surprising amount of situations

I don't have enough time or experienced with enough classes to write a detailed multiclassing guide, but for D&D players, especially new players, wondering if they should multiclass, the simple answer is "probably not". Multiclassing is, in general, bad. The game was not balanced with it in mind, and it's very easy to muck up your character if you don't know what you're doing. I'm not just talking from an optimization perspective, either; it's difficult to justify it narratively in a way that doesn't cheapen the significance of what class levels represent. You don't become a Bard by practicing the lute for a week. You can't become a Wizard without years of study. If you plan to multiclass, my advice would be to find some way of tying it narratively into your primary class somehow; an Eldritch Knight becoming a Wizard is sensible, because they already have an understanding of how to work arcane magic, they just need to spend some time focusing on that over improving their martial abilities to learn enough to start filling out a spellbook. Of course, that still takes a long time, but the Eldritch Knight's previous experiences mean they already know how to cast multiple spells already. If you want to multiclass for story reasons, ask yourself two questions: Is multiclassing really the best way to convey this change in my character, and, if so, do they have the adequate time, experiences, and resources to practice the skills necessary (physical training, study, spiritual attunement, etc.) to even START being that class? The reason I put so much weight into class levels is because the Player's Handbook itself makes a point to clarify what sets a member of each class apart from others who seem similar on the surface; not every soldier in a given army is a Fighter, chances are most of them aren't. And Paladins are even rarer! To achieve even one class level is a strong indication of skill and effort, and I as your DM would expect you to consider how your character achieves levels in a second class. My campaign features a Fighter/Warlock multiclass, and her patron is both the supplier of her occult magic, and her instructor, personally training her in her dreams, so she can level up in either class and it'll make sense. My favorite combination, Paladin/Sorcerer, can be explained by latent powers emerging in response to their experiences and the holy power they channel within themselves, perhaps a gift from their deity or the result of them or their ancestor slaying a creature like a dragon or vampire whose blood imbued the Paladin's bloodline with arcane magic. Maybe a Monk/Cleric comes from a monastery that reveres a specific deity, and that Monk caught their deity's attention, choosing the Monk for a holy mission. If multiclassing is part of your character's backstory or projected future, having a plan for it is key to making them still feel like a cohesive, singular character.
#musings#dungeons and dragons#take my advice with a grain of salt since not all groups will put the same weight into class levels as i do#but the reason most wizards are depicted as elderly is because wizardry is extremely difficult and takes a long time to master#class levels being rare or hard to achieve is kind of necessary from a worldbuilding perspective#if becoming a wizard was possible after what amounts to a college course there'd be wizards everywhere#and the players wouldn't be as important because their own abilities wouldn't be anything special for a long time#i didn't talk about optimization very much since i think most d&d players don't care about that as much as roleplay and thematics#but if you're questioning if multiclassing would be good for you#look at the benefits you'd get from even one level of another class and ask if that's worth setting your main class back permanently#even one bad multiclass level can become a problem with initiative is rolled and you're functionally one level lower than you should be#it's also why timing when to multiclass is important!#it's tempting to multiclass as soon as you hit level 2 but unless you're starting as your secondary class you should really wait#until you're at least level 5 or so because that's a big power spike#and once you achieve that it doesn't hurt as much to delay levels in your main class in favor of another#that's variation in this of course#if you're a paladin who plans to take just one level of hexblade you really should do it at level 2 if you dumped strength#you don't want to be relying on 13 strength for weapon attacks any longer than you have to#and if you're only interested in the thematic elements of a class remember that flavor is free!#plus you can use things like your background to give you a feel akin to a different class#a warlock entertainer who makes a deal with the devil to save their music career is a cool way to get bard flavor without multiclassing#especially since if you manage to become a true bard you probably don't need the devil's help anyway

Colin's build isn't as flashy as some of the others in the party, but he does have one that is interesting to me in terms of mechanical character. Just to take stock what he's working with first:
Tumblr media
16 (+3) Constitution, highest in the party. Mathematically, i.e. on paper since we don't know actual hit points at this time, he easily paces with Delissandro on hit points.
16 (+3) Strength and 17 (+3) Dexterity, second highest in the party. His longsword uses Strength, and his dagger uses Dexterity (because it's higher).
15 (+2) Intelligence, second highest in the party as Karna, Raphaniel, and Amangeaux all tie for first with 16 (+3).
AC 17, second highest in the party. Very respectable AC for this level.
Rogue 2. Because rogue is listed first on his card, I presume he is a base rogue; this is notable because it grants him four starting skills (as opposed to two plus one from a rogue multiclass) and proficiency in Dexterity saves. He has Expertise in Insight, as he made a check that was natural 4 but 11 total. Rogue 2 also means Cunning Action.
Fighter 3. Fighting Style (which could be interesting depending on what his choice is), Second Wind, and one use of Action Surge.
Battle Master. He knows three maneuvers.
Feat: Mobile. Brings his speed up to 40 feet, and difficult terrain does not reduce it while he is dashing. Combined with Cunning Action, he can run 120 feet with a double dash: greater than the next fastest Amangeaux (30 base, 90 at double dash) and twice the speed of the rest the party at their greatest full dash (assuming no items modifying speed are in the mix). Mobile also allows him to neutralize attacks of opportunity: someone he makes a melee attack against, hit or miss, they cannot make an attack of opportunity against him for the rest of the turn.
Colin has a very physical stats forward build, in that Colin's best stats are all physical and all are at least +3, moreso than even Delissandro who has a higher Charisma than Constitution and Dexterity. (You can check all the stat cards from the first episode here.) The combination of Cunning Action and Mobile makes him incredibly difficult to pin down or corner and moves very fast with an ability to close on a target. A respectable AC and proficiency in Dexterity saves also makes him pretty dodgy at this level, and a good Constitution makes him hardy; he is a tank.
I find his build very interesting because it tells a story of someone who is very comfortable on the battlefield and is used to combat scenarios. It corroborates what he tells Delissandro ("Any other battle advice or anything you want from me, 'cause that's kinda my gear.") and is in line with him planning combat strategies when anxious or uncomfortable. An individual player can always take or leave the flavor of a subclass, but the narrative of the Battle Master leans heavily on someone who has been trained in military arts or has learned very well through experience in the field.
Base rogue with the Mobile feat very much tells a story. His respectable Intelligence paired with Battle Master does too. Altogether, his mechanics communicate to me that he is well suited to his job as a sellsword, and he is one of skill and experience.
A lot of this can also be augmented by class choices, particularly Maneuver Choices. I won't speculate too much on choices because there's so many good ones, but Evasive Footwork, Ambush, Bait and Switch, Disarming Attack, Riposte, Quick Toss would add to this sense of someone who is difficult to pin down, moves easily through combat, and has a good grasp of the rhythm of battle.
Colin's entire set of mechanics together give me personally a sense of someone who is very much a survivor and of someone who knows how to move through combat, both in the intellectual skill to calculate and the physical skill to execute.

Post so W I had to come in through the Wario door
Thank you but wtf-
I literally just posted that-
Dude you didn't just come in, you burst through that door like a fireball-
The door is gone-
Anyway glad someone liked it, it always irked me how so many people are immediately assuming that Porter is a villain when all he's really doing is being the Barbarian teacher. Cause of course he's not going to let Gorgug immediately multiclass, Gorgug has had a bad relationship with his anger since day one, he may be passing his classes but how can he expect to cast spells while raging when he avoids raging like the plague in regular situations.
Also I see people saying that Zara not telling Fig the name of her patron is a sign that she's working with Ankarna but.... teachers don't typically give students their partners names.
I also think that the advice they gave fig about being a paladin for Cassandra is good advice, yes, Fig has experienced doubt, that is a fundamental part of her character, but it doesn't motivate her like with Kristen. It's honestly similar advice that my own teachers give to me in my Uni course. What's always motivated Fig is conviction, is righteous fury, indignation about being lied to, and the love she has for her family. Yes, doubt has been a big part of Fig's life, but she didn't become a Paladin because she believed in Cassandra, in doubt, she did it because she believed in Kristen, her sister.
Basically what I'm saying is that Zara and, specifically, Porter, probably aren't bad people.
They're just good teachers.

I'd like to see Fig in her 30s. She'd be the kind of person with 2 university degrees who has worked as a waitress, in a sex shop, as a mechanician, a hospital clerk and teaching guitar lessons. None of these jobs are related to her degrees.
She has one or two multiclass levels of the most random things you can imagine, we are speaking multiclassing with like 7 or 8 different things. Eventually, she stops adventuring but at some point she is an accountant for the local magic shoe shop and plays on Saturdays at the Botomless Pit with Gorgug à la Dresden Dolls. Other jobs she has had are receptionist for the elven Rangers, personal trainer or gardener in a gnome company.
If people ask her for advice about their adventuring party, where to go, who to hire, etc., she can point them in the right direction but handling her Hell domain and her usual life is already busy enough. She doesn't even tour.

Jr Year ep4
This is me live blogging bc I need to get thoughts out also would love fandom friends full spoilers bellow the cut just so no one accidentally reads anything they don’t want to this will be long
I have wanted most if not all of Zac's and Murph's shirts this season
I still have issues with the multiclass system but also no school thing has made the most sense in universe
I believe you and that's why I'm not saying anything is SUCH a trouble friend mood
"what's the drinking age?" "you have murdered SO many people"
BRENANS FACE WHEN KALINA SAYS I'M NOT BAD ANYMORE OH LORDS
the whole Kalina/Cassandra/Kristen scene is so nerve wrecking and interesting and once again I can talk so much about this topic and I know I have critized Kristen's approach but that's bc honestly I do have issue w it despite understanding it but it does make for an interesting arc and with this conversation it does seem like she believes in this domain of faith on the unknown. I will at some point talk more about from the point of someone who also left a culty religious thing but was still expected to perform similarly once out of it but my thoughts are still not the most organized
that being said I do not trust kalina and i do love cassandra
when you're in the dark I'm there holding your hand why am i crying
not kvx still being a thing lmao so Brennan
oh I just love how complicated but absolutely Bill Seacaster is the whole trust thing, the money going to the nemesees, there being a whole department, honestly that's a department I'd work for it's basically spy and gossip stuff
but also poor Fabian having to go through all this head ache stuff alone
watch Caperslolly Cattlekrush not be a direct nemesis but someone from her party be yes Fabian get that service!
I too keep thinking it is rat ccrushers no t grinders and will absolutely get it wrong
the gorthlax art is PERFECT
my school nurse did not have sweat pants but ok murph(i also absolutely am not from the us idk why i keep pointing out diferences)
they each will have a foil in my head so why just one owlbear contender? also is riz in the bloodrush team?
grinding for xp is so much weirder and terrible imo in this context also should be less effective bc like lbr experience is important like thinking on your feet etc like yes they are probably equal level and Brenan will play them well but they should absolutely not be as good as the bad kids at actual adventuring
I love how they all are so agro tho bc I get it and love the energy and I would absolutely be that mad
YES SOMEONE CALLED OUT THE HIPOCRISY
xp isn't bad if you at least still DO INTERESTING STUFF TO GET IT
if brenan makes them like grinding i will become as agro as the bad kids so far lol
gorthlax gave great advice, that being said i do hope they get a lil bit petty and end annoying grinders
nooo Gorgug (cries) I really want him to do well
listen I am so emo about gorgu's storyline like it's just no thoughts just feels and all of them
listen i don't do character builds but it does not sound to me like artificer and barbarian are THAT ill fitted, like yes the require different focus levels and types but they are also USED in different moments, nothing is stopping Gorgug from using his down time to come up with gadgets that work WITH his strenght and dex and rage and then use reckless abandon in battles. I think even th solar lasso is very much an example of that because it uses his strenghts, he's realing it in with atheltics checks iirc or how his shoes have jump like yes absolutely a challenge and not the most obvious but people are acting like it's impossible when it absolutely isn't
we love Corsica Jones
Riz helping Kristen <3
Brenan is absolutely having so much fun with Ayada's messages
Listen Fig does not need to go to warlock classes, no one in the school knows she is a warlock just do bard and barbarian and help your friend
also i get that procrastination girl
Please I want Fig and Gorgug to work on a song together and for us to get that scene so bad
Aelwynn is a whole entire mood
well that answers me: riz is not on bloodrush
I KNEW BRENNAN MADE THEM STUPID RATS TOO GOOD I HATE IT BUT I LOVE IT
wouldn't detect magic tell riz what enhancements she has? cause otherwise it's nnot THAT useful for spies (which is reason #1 the gadget exists)
oh brennan REALLY made people we will all hate
Yes Bucky I adore him
someone please go home with Fabian
ohhh Brennan put extra stakes at Fig just quitting/failling auegfort since she technically doesn't need it
oh warlock classes are night classes, kinda love that for Fig and also good for her being good at it
also looove the talk about exchanges and that
FIg could make an album out of pressure and expextations that woul be rad as hell
RAGH we love him
LISTEN Ragh should be like party guy, he was absolutely popular and is older and it takes stuff away from the bad kids to do
oh Fabian goes into it immediately we stan
Listen Ally is MASTER of weird ass energies and I love them for it
they truly are such dorks and somehow cool at the same time
I cannot tell if they don't know milkyriver's name or if they are benedict cumberbunching it and I love that
literally everything kalina says is so threatening
also the bad kids should count as followers of cassandra like they are not clerics sure but they ablsolutely belive in her... do only clerics/paladins count?
LISTEN BRENNAN WE DON'T NEED MORE PROBLEMS
oh the shard and red thing that was in one of the arts
oh I REALLY thought they were gonna split party this
I do hope the party still goes well

This isn't a question BUT I LOVE YOUR CHARACTER SAFFRON AND I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT HIm so if you have any fun stories or analytical ramblings to share I am all ears (if you want to of course) ALSO YOUR ART IS POG.
okay wait I just got a question what class is saffron?? I've seen like 4 listed (druid, feylock, bard, echo knight?) so is he just multiclassing to the nines or-??
also I JUST SAW THE FUNNY TREE GUY ON YOUR TWITTER THE ONE WITH THE FACE? AND I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HIM (it?) BUT HES GREAT
(I don't quite understand how asks work I hope this sends correctly) (I happened to scroll your socials to admire Saffron today instead of Latin homework and this 'ask' is the result) (your art is very cool i need to say that again because it is and you should be proud)
OGHH THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Almost all of Saff’s lore can be found here,on his toyhouse! All his art is also under the #saffron tag
Currently in his more recent lore he’s been dealing with a lot of shit with his identity switch (discovering his real name which Titania took and snippets of his old pre-Fey memories), hes doing better (?) mentally but still. The boy is struggling.
He started as Feylock under Titania but then got a weird deal with a nothic which caused him to get touched by the unseelie, and multiclassed him into spore Druid. After recently severing his pact completely he’s rejected most magic and is currently echo knight fighter and lore bard- LOTS of classes he’s cycled thru!
THE WISE AND MYSTICAL TREEE!! That’s his tutor from the summer court!! He was accidentally planted in Phandalin in their mansion, and now gives off free unwanted advice to the rest of the party members. We all love him very much.
Also thank you so much for the kind words :’> so glad you like my boy!!

Homebrew Class design For Dummies: Part 2: Getting Started
Hi there~! Welcome to the second edition of homebrew class design for dummies, in case you haven't seen the first part of this. Welcome! This is a series of blogs where I go over how to make-what else, a homebrew class for Dungeons and Dragons Fifth-Edition. The previous post discussed the "planning" phase, going over the classes role in and out-of combat, their area and other minutia. This entry will cover the level 1-3 foundation, along with some other design concepts to help your class get off the grounds into becoming something amazing.
But First!
Before we get into making our class, there are a few key ideas you should keep in mind when designing a character option for 5e, some of this ties back into advice given in part 1, but bear repeating here.
Very basics
These things don't require much of an explanation, but just things to well...Keep in mind
Strong and weak saves: Each class has a strong (Constitution, Dexterity and Wisdom) and weak saving throw (Charisma, Intelligence and Strength) make sure to give one of each to your class.
Ribbon features: Ribbon features are like seasoning, while not adding much to the fully course, they enhance the classes flavor, a bad example of a ribbon feature is "Druidic" simply put unless your DM actively gives you a use for it, it is a completely useless feature. So make sure you're ribbon features actually come into affect when roleplaying the class.
Amount of features: Typically classes gain 2 features at these early levels, the only exception of which is paladin at 2nd level, though that's probably due to how divine smite works off your spell slots, unless you're gonna give a ribbon feature at one of those levels, it's best not to give three class features at once.
Dead levels: Dead levels are those levels where you get nothing, nada, bupkis. Spellcasters have the most dead levels due to them getting cantrip enhancements + higher level spells as they level up, use them where appropriate.
Bounded Accuracy:
In laments terms, bounded accuracy is meant to keep DC's around a bounds the designer intends for (In 5e's case 0-30) this is why, not including magical items or feature such as the barbarians capstone, this applies to whether you're attempting to break down a door or stabbing a vampire. Bounded accuracy is also accompanied by 5e's horizontal progression system, meaning that rather than your numbers going up, you gain more features to make you better at certain tasks (Damage, healing, etc) rather than bonuses to hit, to damage, etc and such, there are some exceptions (Advantage, Bless) but
Keep an eye on these
Weather you're designing a spell, subclass or a new class in our case, there are a few things in game that you should keep in mind
Barbarian Rage
Bards Magical Secrets
Druids Wild Shape
Fighters Action Surge
Monks Stunning Strike
Paladins Divine Smite + Auras
Rogues Sneak attack
Sorccerers Metamagic (Quicken + Twinned spell)
Warlocks Eldritch Blast and Pact Magic
Wizards Spell Mastery
All of these features not only serve as foundations for their respective classes, but also grant the class a huge deal of power. And in a game where 5e's multiclassing system is a thing, keeping these features in mind is helpful, for an example, say your class allows you to easily get off weapon attacks as a reaction, which, while possibly mediocre on its lonesome can get out of hand when paired with a rouge multiclass, due to how sneak attack can trigger multiple times if using a reaction attack (Since it triggers once per turn, rather than once per round) it's fine if you want to have interesting synergies between classes, just make sure you don't break anything in doing so.
While not class features, some other character options also grant players with them a great deal of power by virtue of their existence.
Feats: Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Master
Spells: Aid, Booming/Green Flame Blade, Counterspell, Conjure animals/Woodland Beings, Pass without trace, Wish.
Laying the foundation
With all of that jargon out of the way, lets begin laying out the first three levels of a homebrew class.
Level 1:
Level 1 is effectively the rookie stage of your classes career, whether they trained at a mystical academy or bonded with sewer rats, the first level of your given class should lay the framework for your class going forward, to give some examples, barbarians at 1st-level are given rage as their core feature, alongside a complementary feature in unarmored movement, rogues get sneak attack and expertise, fleshing out their role as a sneaky skill-monkey archetype. spellcasters (Besides the paladin and ranger) also get their spellcasting at this level.
Level 2:
Level 2 is where your character is starting to get a grasp of their abilities, similar to level 1 many classes get some of their most defining features here at this level, such as Druids Wildshape, Rogues Cunning Action, Clerics Channel Divinity, the list goes on.
Level 3:
Level 3 is where your character has gotten the grasp of their abilities and now can truly be one of their own, this is where the fullcasters get their second levels spells and where the martials get their subclass of choice, speaking of subclasses:
Where do I put the subclass?
A likely question you'll have have when making your subclass is "Where do I put it" or "What level should they get it, while non of what i'll state is definitive, some general guidelines for 1-3rd level goes as follows:
A subclass at 1st-level is generally done because it is absolutely crucial to the classes fantasy, say for instance your class is about you harnessing a curse (Ex: Ross leisers accursed) getting your subclass at first level would make the most sense, to use base game classes as an example sorccerers, warlocks and clerics get their subclass at 1st-level because said subclass defines the source of their magic (their core feature). Despite what OND DND might say, it would be weird for you to be a abberant mind sorccerer, born from the forbidden alliance of a githyanki and mind flayer, but not able to do anything psychic or eldritch until two levels later. While many tables may skip over 1st-level (especially much older groups) you shouldn't neglect that oh so precious first level.
A subclass at 2nd-level , while only used for two classes (Being wizard and druid) its done due to 3rd-level is a massive spike in power for any full caster, as you're given your second level spelld at that level (with rhe exception of bard)
A subclass at 3rd-level is typical of many martial and half casters, this is best used if your subclass describes which type of said class you are, for instance, fighter and rogue subclasses detail what kind of fighting man, or what kind of theif you are, essentially making the first two levels a "training period" of sorts.
Subclass Progression
Last thing in relation to subclass, while you can simply use the wizard, fighter or paladin subclass structure for your subclass, feel free to go out of the box (Within reason) with it, want your class to gain its final subclass feature at 20th level? Go ahead! Just keep in mind that subclasses only give you 4-5 features maximum. You can do more, but that'll likely mean your base class takes a hit in power as a result.
The Avatar
Now for the moment you've (Maybe) been waiting for, using the knowledge bestowed within this article I shall showcase the first three levels of the Avatar class.
Tumblr media
Divine Spark is your avatars subclass, determining the source of your divinity, similar to a cleric divine domain. While I haven't written down any features of their subclasses quite yet, I have four planned for the class so far (With more likely on the horizon) You also gain the Legendary strike ability, which not only increases your weapons damage dice by one, you also give temp hp to your allies when you score a critical hit.
Godly Conduit acts similarly to ki on the monk, you gain a number of conduit dice equal to half of your avatar level + your charisma modifier, which you can use to either leap a number of feet equal to 5 times the number rolled, or gain an expanded hit range with your weapons for a number of rounds equal to the number rolled. My favorite feature so far is the epithets, which are described bellow:
Tumblr media
I cannot wait to show off the epithets sometime in the future. I am super proud of how they're turning out as of now. My hope is that they not only allow for a customizable avatar, but also help redefine how you utilize weapons.
at 3rd-level you gain a ribbon feature, exceptional figure, which makes it so that you cannot suffer disadvantage on any strength-based ability checks you make. Alongside that, feasting now counts as light activity for you and your allies while resting, meant to emulate the giant appetite many heroes of myth have, and I love the idea of an avatar and their allies after a long fought battle just pigging out to their hearts content.
Tumblr media
You also gain another subclass feature at 3rd-level to for one last power spike in the starting levels.
Summary
To summarize everything covered within this entry, when laying the 1-3rd level foundation for your subclass, you should
Keep the basic rules of design in mind.
Create features that lay out what you want your class to be doing.
Give them a cool roleplay feature to help with your classes theme.
Determine where your classes subclass should go.
Get to Writing.
That's about all I got for this entry, next time we will go over features after 3rd level, going from 5th to 20th level, make sure to follow me if you're interested in that but until then. Thank you for reading, stay cool and go make some homebrew

Quick thoughts about the TSW/SWL TTRPG
So we just received a text only pdf of the Secret World TTRPG. 456 pages long, no formatting, no layout
After a quick read/glance through, here are my thoughts :
The game is set in our time, a decade after 2012 where the events of the game occured. Some, especially in Kingsmouth, don't have memory of this decade, weird. It also means some of the game story happened while others are a mystery.
The NPC have aged. This means I can't legally adopt Carter anymore.
Reading through a text only with no layout is rough
We have some more locations, not a lot but some news like Paris. (And I am still infuriated that I can't see the "Paris of the Alchemists" themed visit because i chose the wrong time to vacation there)
Character creation : Well this is indeed a 5th edition game, and you will need the books for the spell effects
The class are named based on decks from the mmo
Only One class, no multiclassing. BUT, secret archetypes that everyone can have regardless of the class, you can have as many as your proficiency, will give you the liberty to better fine tune your character ( I miss the Wheel)
A summary of 5th rules adapted to a modern world, Good.
GM section: I can't say a lot on this. Having advices on themes is appreciated.
The missions are not all destroy creatures, on the contrary the differents types of missions from the mmos are there. Will they work with dnd rules ? we'll have to see.
Adventure seeds ? Good. No fully written adventure ? Not good ( there is a 8 pages one for backers but not in this pdf, not there yet)
There's not enough juicy secrets from the original lore that I wished for when backing this game.

Advice to anyone that wants wyll in their party but don't wanna get rid of a tank or anything, 5 levels warlock and then multiclass him into paladin for the other 7, palalocks are incredibly op even in actual tabletop dnd and i promise you his crowd control aoe shit + him being an absolute front line tank will make every encounter a walk in the park. I got ketheric down in a grand total between all 3 phases of his fight in 3 rounds. One round per phase, it's so good
I haven’t tried the paladin/warlock multiclass but this definitely makes me want to try it! Plus, I think paladin works with Wyll’s character really well!

Some Tav lore dump cause I'm on that good brain rot. Introducing my main Tavs, Eve and Olive. Spoilers for Act1 and 2
Eve:
Chaotic good; doesn't have a plan but got the spirit
Druid, Circle of the Moon. Fav wild shape is bear and spider. She likes to look intimidating. Multiclass eventually as a barbarian as she's gotten more Angier and short fused cause a certain goddess
Is quite a fan of Halsin and his work. May have fangirled when she first met him. Doesn't hurt that he's so beefy and hot
Polyamory but fell for Gale enough where she isn't bother about being monogamous. Plus, she's too busy trying to fight Mystra.
Would have punched Mystra if she ever saw her. What do you mean you told your Chosen to kill himself???
Totally hooked up with Astarion that one time but ended it with him cause the man had googly eyes for the leader of the pack. Actually became a good friend of his cause of how earnest she was
Fell head over heals for Gale. She likes smart men, plus, listening to him talk and lecture is hot to her. She's not the smartest person, so it's nice to be with someone who is. Gale's way with words? Mr. I've got a practiced tongue? She was a goner
Mighty insecurities about how others respond to her looks. She knows she's pretty, but it annoys her that it's one of the only things people care about.
Looks sweet and innocent but regularly digs through dead bodies and viscera for supplies. Her circle regularly studied dead animals and people for information and understanding of nature ethically. She would be a doctor or mortician in another life.
The type to respond to a dare by upping the ante.
Sleeps top less much to the chagrin of the camp. Nudism was a common thing in her former circle. Gale is not bothered by it at a certain point.
Olive:
Said leader of the pack. Reluctant cause why is everyone going to her for advice and decision making???. She just helped a few people, and now everyone decides she was the leader?
Monk, Way of the 4 Elements. Possible multiclass as a rogue cause Astarion influences. Plus, really good dex
A durge trying her best to stop being so stabby. Regularly throws up and self hurt cause she really is disgusted by her thoughts. She moves her tent far from camp after a certain night in Act1.
Neutral good or True neutral.
Initially, she was not into helping others besides her camp cause turning a mind flayer is kind of dire, but if helping someone benefited them with finding the cure, then fine, she'll help.
However, after seeing what happened to the tieflings in Act2, she became more assertive and vowed to get them safe. It becomes a turning point in how she responds to conflicts and her role as the leader of the camp. Talked her way through all the bbg in Moonrise
Most actions are done for the good of the camp or by guilt. Altruism isn't her Forte, but it doesn't hurt to do if it's on the way. Miss. "I'm not being nice I'm being efficient."
Fuck the gods.
Confession immediately after the orthon fight was cute cause she talked her way out of orthon encounter. Astarion found it extremely terrifying, impressive, and kinda hot. She was a sobbing mess after confession, she had fallen hard for him and didn't know how to deal with happiness. They started sleeping in the same tent from then on.
Enemies to rivals to lovers Astarion. Mostly cause of trauma bonding. Didn't care about him cause she doesn't like overly flirty people. But after bard death, her guilt gave way to sympathy for Astarion's own problems. More lax about his "evil" side so long as it's within reason and doesn't go too far. She knows he's mostly all talk
Astarion had some competition cause everyone in camp ended up having some form of a crush on her. Plus, she had a crush on Wyll but squished that after the bard night.
Tumblr media
Never cared for sex. Likes makeouts and the occasional Astarion whispers of sweet nothings. Only slept with him 1 time before confession cause she could tell Astarion needed to, even if she didn't know why.
Tumblr media
Ngl, my art doesn't do justice on how beautiful Eve
Olive is a bit easier but her tattoos are difficult. I do like how her skin tone can go from light blue to green depending on the lighting in the game

Courtesy of Sage Advice, I present…
Part of Drizzt’s (5e) character sheet.
Tumblr media
This character sheet is (very likely) six years out of date, so I don't know if any of it still holds true, however! I bring it up to highlight a problem with Drizzt (as he is portrayed in the book). The Visual Directory brought it to my attention.
You see that circled text up there? It says he has Ranger levels and Drizzt is commonly called a ranger in the books. The problem is that Drizzt...does not do ANYTHING to show or suggest that he has ranger levels. On character sheet(s), he's a fighter/ranger (with levels either in barbarian or monk) multiclassed combo.
But in-universe? For all intents and purposes, story-wise, he's a fighter. A two-sword wielding fighter with an artifact that summons a panther, yes, but he's still written as mainly a fighter (sometimes the barbarian [aka the hunter] shows up, I can't remember how often his monk training is actually used).
Bob never utilizes Drizzt's ranger levels. Hell, I'm convinced he either doesn't know how rangers as a class work or he forgot that Drizzt even has ranger levels. Drizzt as a ranger should have spells. He should be able to cast cure wounds, hunter's mark, hail of thorns, snare, speak with animals — just to name a few examples (from 5e. Having a hard time finding a 3/3.5 and 4e comprehensive list of ranger spells). But Bob won't let him use them for some reason and I don't know why.
Bob treats Drizzt's ranger levels more like a title than an actual thing the boi is supposed to be. It feels like it's just there for flavor and for being able to say "he is a drow ranger" bonus points than for, ya know, actually being used.
My ending point is: Don't make your character a ranger if you are not going to have them ACT like a ranger.

oh oh i have another question and i promise i'm serious. i've never built or played a character who sucks ass and is a loser. do you have any advice for better making a character who sucks ass and is a loser? making a character who's a little pathetic, but on purpose?
i think this needs to be an rp thing more than a mechanics thing because all of the classes are designed to give you functionality and ways to succeed and also, it's largely dependent on luck. you can dump stats that are supposed to be your main thing if you'd like or do something like "i'm going to multiclass a level into every class" if you really want to but i feel like that defeats the purpose of playing the game in some ways.
the mechanics let you engage in the game even if you're doing so in a 'failing forward' way yaknow?

Advice for Players Changing Character
Tumblr media
Salutations! I have emerged from my den with some new advice! Sometimes as a player you're simply bored/dissatisfied with your current character, this can happen especially when you're new to the game and haven't played many classes yet. This is completely normal, you can just ask your dungeon master that you'd like to try something new, and can do a few different things. Change class but not character, In this the backstory, personality, and relationships stay the same but your class changes. This is my favorite as it's the least disruptive to the flow of the game and all you have to do is roll up a new character, if you want to try them all but are invested with your characters story this is perfect for you! Unfortunately this doesn't work in one shots (obviously lol) and shorter campaigns more focused on combat.
Playing an NPC, if you have a favorite NPC you like you could simply swap to playing it for a session to try out the class, having your character poisoned/sick for a session and the goal is to find the cure or maybe if you want a longer test run your character is more permanently incapacitated and a sibling/friend from their backstory is called upon to join the party, in this option there are no unnecessary character deaths and you can grow the coolness of both characters if you feel like changing back. Thirdly you could simply ask the DM to kill your character so you could make a new one, just make sure your party understands and you could use it as a surprising moment that sets tension for a boss fight or maybe it sets a grimdark setting. Anyhoo you're smart I'm sure you'll work it out. That is all for now I must return to the Kobald Kave™ Good luck with your characters and remember it's just a game and you can change your character at anytime!
(just don't bring in a new character and bring magic items to the table that were homebrewed from another campaign especially if it has rolled stats and the stat average is closer to an ancient evil than lv 3 adventurer it really throws your DM off and everyone knows you didn't actually roll 3 20's and yes your one 8 in charisma doesn't make your multiclass Echoknight, Mystic hybrid cool KEVIN!)

I was wondering if u had multiclass advice for someone playing matt mercers gunslinger fighter. Cause i was thinking of possibly going cleric
Hi! If you haven't read my post on general fighter multiclassing, you can find it here.
From that post, here's what I wrote on a fighter/cleric multiclass:
Cleric is great if you do one thing–you choose a combat-oriented Divine Domain at first level, when you first multiclass. Like bard, you should use your spell slots on bonus-action healing and out-of-combat work, but if you’re War Domain, for instance, you can Attack as a bonus action and at 2nd level use Channel Divinity to add a +10 to an attack roll. This is a great multiclass to use for damage output with a little healing on the side.
All this is advice is modified by one crucial thing: you'll be mostly working from range. Now, there are some excellent spells for clerics that have a range of 60 or more for early-level casters: Guiding Bolt, Healing Word (that bonus-action healing I mentioned above), Sacred Flame, and Toll the Dead. If you did go for the War Domain, your "Divine Favor" spell option is even better, because it causes your weapon attacks to deal additional radiant damage - and the War Priest feature at level 1 lets you make weapon attacks as a bonus action if you already used your action to attack.
Mechanically, cleric is a great option, and the War Domain is an especially strong choice. Still, clerics are an extremely flavor-rich class to take, so I also advise having a good roleplay reason to devote your character to a god's service.
If roleplaying a cleric is not your jam, I'd like to highlight a different option that's just as good at ranged play, if not better: the ever-classic fighter/rogue.
A gunslinger rogue is attacking at range, which gives you all the flexibility of a rogue's cunning actions at second level. And while the sneak attack dice will be low at first level, the Deadeye Shot option for your gunslinger gives you advantage on your target -- which equals automatic Sneak Attack, given that firearms are ranged weapons.
If your party is in want of a healer, though, and you don't really want to be a cleric but feel like you've got to do it, consider the humble bard instead. You'd really only need a one-level dip to get what you need: a couple first-level spell slots for Healing Word (60ft range), a handful of cantrips, and Bardic Inspiration to buff your allies without interrupting your Attack actions. Going further nets you Jack of All Trades, a nice non-combat utility feature, and the post-combat healing effect Song of Rest.
