Have some Jehan...angst? This may be angst. All of the many many mistakes that I presume are lurking have shared custody with me and sleep deprivation.

Jehans mother fell in love with love.

She fell in love with a man who quoted sonnets he had not written, but she had read ment great passion. She fell in love with flower he gave, because stories gave them meaning. She fell in love with touches that he carved into her flesh the emotions she had seen held in the cool marble. She fell in love with the dances he pulled her into, the steps she knew all lovers danced.

She fell.

She fell into distress when a man who hadn’t cared for her, only the buzz she gave, left. She fell into sadness as she re-read the stories, revisited the museums to find them tainted. She fell into motherhood, eight months after he was gone.

She ensured her child would never fall the way she had.

Jehan was raised a capital R Romantic. They were raised to see that flowers were lovely because they were created from sunlight, that bones raised us up and thus should be loved, the horror and beauty chased each other in circles. They read Odes to Melancholy and scorned Bright Stars -- steadfast as they may be.

Jehan loved their friends, loved liberty and flowers and the moon and the bones. They loved frail pages bound together, binding them to kindred spirits across millennia. Jehan loved early mornings when the ache they felt in their chest was written in the low fog rolling across the city, and loved the late nights when the passion they felt even deeper was etched into every burning bulb in Paris.

Jehan was not in love with love. 

They felt no blush rising at roses, turned away from the practiced one-two steps of lovers dancing in unison. They laughed at friends who read Shakespeare to those they wished to woo, and who stowed away locks of hair in lockets.

When a man holding a knife gives them a bouquet of Gouden flowers, they scoff-- flowers have no meaning but those prescribed to them and the false hope they mean to those scorned.

“You had a bouquet at your last...protest, but they were trampled. I wanted to bring you replacements.” These flowers had no meaning, but those words.

when the same man gives them a set of birds skulls, tiny little things he could crush between his fingers--Jehan does not know of a fairy-tale romance that begins like this.

“You were talking about a collection you were starting. I thought this may help.” But a fairy-tale starts none the less.

There were no sonnets about this, no epics describe the steps of this dance-- no statues held aloft a small birds skull in offering. This man didn’t seek to draw Jehan into a romance the great painters immortalized. Jehan didn’t find a meaning in the flowers they were given in books.

“This reminded me of the necklace you wore last week.”

“I saw a young boy and his sister playing in the park and thought about that poem you were sharing with me”

“I wanted to spend this grey morning with you”

Jehan did not fall in love with love- nor did they fall in love with Montparnasse. They did not fall at all. They rose to dance with him, a new set of steps, a new romance written only for the two of them.
