How did you fall into a catpit? What you love and what you hate about Cats?

I'm guessing the catpit question is how I got into Cats😅. So the story goes that my older sister tried to get me into Cats after the 2019 film came out but I down right refused because everyone was saying how bad it was. But then cue me getting the same Sideways video recommended to me for like 2 years (not even exaggerating) until I finally caved in and watched it... the same night I didn't sleep, I was busy watching Cats 1998 and then consuming every Mistoffelees media I could find. And now we're here!

What I love about Cats and especially the fandom (in my experience) is how open it is. You can ship whoever you like since almost nothing is set in stone canon. Even the big ships like Tuggoffelees isn't canon and doesn't have to be either. Every headcanon is also valid and there's so much fanfic potential everywhere you look.

The music is also awesome and amazing but that's obvious.

I actually don't think I hate anything about Cats. Sure I dislike some of the broadway revival choreography and how the 1998 film cut away some of the best parts (that being most of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazers song, half the girls takeover during the ball and Mistoffelees fricking conjuring turns!?). But like I said, that's only things I dislike, not hate.

And I won't say the 2019 movie. It already gets enough hate from people who haven't even seen the show and I know some people in the fandom likes the movie. I've seen it once and it was okay. Did I like the changes? No. But I still found things I liked in it like Tantomiles character, Munkstrap and Growltiger/Griddlebone being actual characters.

Matt Krzan is leaving the Asia tour to, of all things, get married. And of course we’re genuinely very happy for him!! But I am So Sad he is leaving, because he’s just *such* a wonderful Munkustrap.

Of course Matt’s been involved with Cats for many, many years – and for the last leg of this tour has been resident director and choreographer. Whether he will continue with Cats after this Tour – I guess we’ll just have to wait for the inevitable Farewell Post. One of many that are going make me cry buckets 😭

I’m sure everyone knows my feelings on the NuMakeup ALW forced on everyone, but my fears about Munkustrap’s makeup for the Asia Tour was completely assuaged by this professional. Look at how *gorgeous* he is!! I’m going to miss it *so much*.

Watching Matt as Munk was fascinating! He is, in many ways, a very aloof Munkstrap. Some of it was staging – he doesn’t join in sensuals, for example. During the pyramid he’s at least one entire Cat’s width away from everyone else (like Tugger, *cough cough*). And with Jo!Griz he was vicious. Never seen a Munk react like he did – lunging aggressively toward her with a terrifying hiss. Intimidating, angry, frustrated body posture – at her, at himself. There's a moment when he hisses at Grizabella that Electra cowers - with Munk turning toward her and curling into himself with shame. It’s *fascinating*. And while he’s gentle with the tribe, he doesn’t go out of his way to be cuddly with them

With one exception. Electra (as played by Sophie Middleton). I have lots of headcanons for Cats depending on the production – and in *this* production Electra is Baby and she is Munk’s Doter 😭. Electra is basically an onstage Swing in this production (I have *thoughts* about that, but Sophie created the world’s most adorable kitten in that role so XD). During Gumbi she doesn’t get to be a cockroach – instead she spends the time on the tire rocking out with Munkustrap (she gets to cuddle up in the JennySuit which Munk wraps around her). Mattstrap joins the tap on the tire *except* for the show when Sophie's family was watching- and then Electra got to join the tap! (and Girls Releve during the Ball).

It still kills me not to see Tugger and Munk in the Jellicle Ball when they are played by dancers. And I was so hoping Matt would jump in like he's done in the past. He didn’t, but we did get a little taste of Copeland when he joins in on the boot when the Ball starts! He’s a beautiful Munk, with the kind of controlled physicality I love seeing in this role, and wonderful to watch the few times he gets to actually dance.

I’m going to miss him So Much. I know the tour only has two more weeks, and my heart is going to break at the end of them. Best Wishes and Congratulations to Matt! Thank you for signing my program and for giving me a Paw Bump during the show. Once a Jellicle *always* a Jellicle.

Munkstrap really likes Alien Shuichi.

yaknow Kokichi's cat Munkstrap? he has him on the ship, and Munkstrap isn't really easy to bond with. The cat is really distrusting as a rescue and the only being he's ever bonded with is Kokichi, well- until he met Shuichi.

Kokichi does not understand why, but Munkstrap loves Shuichi; he loves to rub up against him, purrs when in his presence, lets Shuichi pet him without a sniff test first, and has even sat on his lap a few times. Kokichi is highly amused and has quickly taken to jokingly calling Shuichi "the chosen one".

Shuichi understands even less, but is very glad the tiny beast his mate keeps as a compainion likes him. Quite the opposite situation to Himiko- a small furry bird species- who Munkstrap is kept away from in collecticve fear of her becoming cat-food

When Jemima really loves something, she stares at it. It’s not a hard glare. It isn’t the distant stare of someone who’s zoning out or focusing a little too hard on a thought or small detail. It’s a stare of admiration: those big, innocent brown eyes staring up at her mother, or Munkustrap, or Tugger, or Bomba with that look, the one that says, “I love you with all my being and I can’t stop staring because I want to commit every bit of you to my memory. I love you that much.”

If they catch her staring, they’ll ask, “Whatcha staring for, Jemmi?,” sometimes with an uncomfortable laugh attached.

Most of the time she’ll say, “No reason!” And just go on about her task— but still, she can’t stop risking a little glance at the cats she loves.

Demeter knows and understands that look best, because when she and Bombalurina lived on the streets, she would give her sister that same look. After her daughter was born, Demeter found herself staring at the little kitten so gently curled by her side. Now, she finds herself staring at Munkstrap, but he doesn’t seem to mind— he meets her gaze, as if to say, “I love you” back. She doesn’t remember if she ever looked at Macavity that way, but every time Jemima looks at her that way, she feels like a hero.

Years later, after dancing with Pouncival at the Jellicle Ball, Jemima finds herself giving him the same look. They’ve been friends since they were kittens. Sometimes when she approached him, she’d see flashes of her own future—their future— in her mind. Now she understands what her future self was thinking, because in that moment, she knows she loves him and she knows she will spend the rest of her life by his side and she knows he feels the same way because she sees those same feelings reflected in his eyes.

Kitty Cast: Where Are They Now?

Who?

Taylor played Coricopat in the Cats National Tour from its relaunch in September 2021 to the conclusion of the first season on June 26th, 2022. He also understudied Munkustrap, Plato/Macavity, and Rum Tum Tugger, but only got to go on as Munkustrap during the 2021-2022 season.

Where is he now?

Just last week Taylor departed the Cats tour for the second time, after having rejoined the cast as a swing in late February 2023. During this second run he performed as Plato/Macavity, Alonzo, Munkstrap, and reprised his role of Coricopat!

Has he done anything else?

He has also done dance work for Vogue World in New York Fashion Week and is also a professional photographer. Follow his photography at taylorjamesphoto on Instagram.
