Lachlan Murdoch may just be worse! News Corp and Fox News remain committed to peddling right-wing fake news.
Dominion Voting Systems accused Fox News and its executives of knowingly amplifying baseless election fraud conspiracies in order to boost sagging ratings following former President Donald Trump's election loss in 2020. On 18 April 2023 Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to end the Dominion defamation court case.

Should anybody be surprised that Fox supported Trump even though they allegedly hate him behind his back?
For the Murdoch media, the serial liar Trump is a kindred spirit.
And yeah, if you find it necessary to harangue people that you’ve won, that’s a clear sign that you’re a loser.

For the past 10 weeks, there’s been weekly rallies for Palestine in Naarm/Melbourne and the government’s claim that protest like this needlessly divides Australia is such bullshit. These rallies are one of the most diverse collections of people I’ve ever seen. Indigenous elders, Palestinian students, queer teens and adults from all walks of life. I saw an old Chinese grandma here a few weeks ago with a Palestinian flag stitched onto her sunhat. At another rally, a girl had come with her service dog - on his harness she had fixed a pin of the Palestinian flag. A prominent re-occurring chant is “ From the river to the sea / Always was, always will be” which combines Palestine’s call for freedom with an affirmation of Aboriginal people’s continuing sovereignty of Australian land.
Today in the rally, the speakers emphasised the value of not losing sight of Palestinian freedom during Christmas “festivities”. If the birthplace of Jesus Christ himself is under siege, what else is Christmas but a capitalist joy fest of consumerism?
This is not to say you can’t still celebrate, but do it responsibly. Observe the rules of BDS, observe the general strike on the 18th. Be more than a convenient idiot this holiday season.

A Letter to Rupert Murdoch Upon His Retirement
[Note. Read past the first line--which is meant as sarcasm.]
Dear Mr. Murdoch: I wanted to write to you to thank you for the impact you and yours have had on my life. I once lived peacefully in a neighborhood of people from varied backgrounds. Back then, I never knew nor cared what people’s political affiliations were. In fact, even when dating, asking someone to label themselves D or R would have seemed nonsensical. Thanks to you, half of that neighborhood no longer speaks to the other half. Prior to 2016, I used to attend a family reunion picnic in Pennsylvania, never caring if some of the people were particularly religious. Well, I would like to thank you for your hand in radicalizing and reinforcing perplexing beliefs in about half of the reunion participants. Now the reunions are barely attended and the family has divided into a feud. I want to thank you for the cousins and friends who defriended me, online and in person, when they fell victim to the dark rhetoric you peddle. Convinced now that their lives are under threats from trans criminals and vicious migrants, they are completely unaware of how they’re economic interested are being robbed by a different source. Thank you so much for your enduring spirit of divisiveness. I hope the money you enjoyed while alive was worth all you stole from society. Mostly, may the hatred, division, suspicious, distrust, judgement and malignancy you leashed on us be returned to you a thousand fold….and may your nursing care be delivered with the same love for humanity you left behind. --GWE, NY, commenting on a NY Times article: Rupert Murdoch to Retire From Fox and News Corporation Boards

A reminder that the Murdoch family's Fox "News" relentlessly injects poison into our civic bloodstream:
Also a reminder that if you subscribe to cable/satellite TV or online equivalent, you are sending money each month to this evil company.
Please stop sending money to this evil company.
(Note, this is not satire. They really put this on television.)

In 1969, the Sun, which in a previous incarnation as the Daily Herald had been a popular centre-left working-class daily, came under the control of Rupert Murdoch, whose editor Larry Lamb transformed it into a populist right-wing tabloid. Murdoch's Sun joined the ranks of the traditional Tory press, shifting the market overwhelmingly to the right. In 1950, newspapers supporting the Conservative and Labour parties were split evenly in terms of circulation. By 1974, political support for the Conservatives and Labour had split to 71—32 per cent respectively - and by 1983 it was 78—22 per cent. This had the effect of shifting political culture in the UK to the right. Crucially though, this shift was more due to changes in the political economy of the press than to public attitudes. The BBC, meanwhile, like the public, and for a time parliamentary opinion, remained broadly tied to the social-democratic consensus, putting it at odds with the cultural shift in the private media the simultaneous shift in elite opinion that was taking place in the business sector. The reactionary attacks on the politics of the BBC, enthusiastically supported by, or emanating from, the reactionary press, need to be understood in this context.

« In all its ugliness, Fox News is not, as Michael Wolff would have it, Roger Ailes' runaway distortion of what his boss ordered up. It is Rupert Murdoch's very own Dorian Gray portrait. And Donald Trump, on the rise once again, is Murdoch's Frankenstein monster. »
— Tina Brown at The New Statesman casting a couple of biting literary references at Rupert Murdoch and his far right media empire.
Ms. Brown had been editor of Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The Daily Beast.

i can't stop thinking about the outpouring of sympathy and support for ukraine after russia invaded. in stark contrast, the media here celebrates when israel bombs families, assassinates journalists, cuts off supplies and forces people out of their homelands. the proximity to the US really makes all the difference, doesn't it? any act of war is cheered on as long as the aggressor has US bucks in their pocket.

92-year-old Rupert Murdoch announced today that he will be stepping down as chair of his media empire, including both Fox Corporation, which includes the Fox News Channel (FNC), and News Corporation, which owns the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, among other newspapers. In 1996 the Australian-born mogul launched the Fox News Channel with media specialist Roger Ailes, who had packaged Republican presidential nominee Richard Nixon in 1968 by presenting him to audiences in highly scripted television appearances.
The Fox News Channel initially presented news from a conservative viewpoint, but over time its opinion shows, delivered as if they were news, came to dominate the channel. Those shows presented a simple narrative in which Americans—overwhelmingly white and rural—wanted the government to leave them alone but “socialists” who wanted social welfare programs demanded their tax dollars. Isolated in the fantasy world of FNC, its viewers became such fanatic adherents to right-wing politics that FNC wholeheartedly trumpeted Trump’s Big Lie after he lost the 2020 presidential election because viewers turned away from FNC when some of its personalities acknowledged that Biden had won..
Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters for America, said today that “Murdoch created a uniquely destructive force in American democracy and public life, one that ushered in an era of division where racist and post-truth politics thrive.”  Margaret Sullivan, formerly the Washington Post’s media critic, wrote in The Guardian that FNC was “a shameless propaganda outfit, reaping massive profits even as it attacked core democratic values such as tolerance, truth and fair elections.” Murdoch, she wrote, wreaked “untold havoc on American democracy.”
Murdoch sees it differently. In his resignation letter, he attacked “bureaucracies” who wanted to “silence those who would question their provenance and purpose” and “elites” who “have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class.” “Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth,” he wrote.
Forbes estimates that their media empire has enabled Murdoch and his family to amass a fortune of more than $17 billion.

A number of bombshell revelations about the inner workings of Fox News have come to light as part of a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against the network.
Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News, has admitted under oath that many hosts on his network “endorsed” Donald Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election for financial, not political, reasons, stating, “It is not red or blue, it is green.”
In court filings, Dominion also revealed that Murdoch had given Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner confidential information about Biden’s campaign ads and debate strategy in possible violation of election laws.
Our guest, Angelo Carusone, is president of the watchdog group Media Matters for America, which recently sent a Federal Elections Commission complaint against Fox News based on evidence from the Dominion lawsuit.
“All the way from Rupert Murdoch on down to the show producers, they knew what they were saying was not true, that it was actually a lie, and they did it anyway,” says Carusone.
