Damian, handing Bruce a piece of paper with a very neat calendar on it: father, I will be taking a step back from my participation in our nightly patrols. I have carefully considered factors such as, but not limited to, school tests, most likely days for breakouts and when other people will be available. Here is my schedule.

Bruce: any particular reason you are stepping back from Robin?

Damian: I have reached an acceptable age and am by far mature enough, so I will be participating in Ramadan this year, father. Afterwards I will pick my duties up as normal, but with changed sleeping and eating patterns, this is the most logical step for now.

Bruce, who grew up with a jewish mother and christian father who were intent to raise him on some weird mix of the two, then a second father who was atheist, proceeded to lose his entire way in any form of religion due to losing himself in his teen years, took in Jewish boy, then a catholic one with religious trauma, then an atheist one who had no idea how to even approach the idea of religion, followed up by a pagan girl and already making seven different mental lists of things he will need to research, how to add aspects of Islam into their weird family holidays and trying desperately to show his support for his son: ....hnn

Thinking about Damian Wayne-Al Ghul fasting during Ramadan in full for the first time the year he moves in with Bruce. He did intermittent fasting throughout the rest of his life but he was still a kid and Talia thought fasting would impede his training.

Little 12-year-old Damian studying the Quran between classes at Gotham Academy. Alfred preparing an Iftar buffet for him before his patrol and suhoor for once he gets back. Bruce keeping multiple water bottles in his utility belt so that Damian stays hydrated through the night. Dick participating in the fast with him despite not being Muslim because he knows it’s Damian’s first time fasting and that takes a lot of discipline. Barbara taking him to an all halal grocery store before Ramadan starts to stock up on food so he doesn’t have to waste energy shopping during the fast. Damian praying 5 times a day just like he always did with his mother and grandfather. Jon asking Damian TONS of questions about fasting and Damian acting annoyed but also being kind of happy that his best friend is interested in his religion.

Okay haven’t really posted much Damian content in a while but I just reblogged a post about Muslim Damian Wayne and as an Arab Muslim I’d like to offer my two cents.

Before I start this discussion I want to say I get it okay? Islam as other religions have been used to spread violence and hate and I don’t condone any of it. Those type of people misuse the texts that are taught and I can only hope they see the truth and stop.

With that said let’s talk about why some people headcanon Damian as Muslim. For some it’s just a fun projection. Being Muslim and seeing your favorite character being Muslim is a fun thing! For those I caution you to be careful about how you choose to portray it. Some Islamaphobic rhetoric is so ingrained into stories we can become blind to it.

For those who aren’t Muslim I want you to ask yourselves why. Some people automatically assume the Al Ghuls would/should be Muslim because they’re Arab but not every Arab is Muslim and not every Muslim is Arab. That not even to mention that Ras himself doesn’t seem to worship any deity and quotes himself as a man of science while his mother seems polytheistic.

Some might see the religion/culture fascinating and want to add it to the narrative as a form of representation. I am all for positive representation but be sure to do your research on it prior. Not just on representation but the religion itself.

Some want to use it in a negative light and I’m not going to give you guys the time of day for that.

For those of you who want to write Damian as Muslim please take into consideration the fact that the League doesn’t seem to follow any major religion and predominantly works like a cult. Maybe Damian could convert post leaving the League.

If you really want Damian to be Muslim in the league listen up. If you’re going to do that, have Islam be what teaches him morals and not meeting Bruce. Islam is all about compassion and mercy. It’s such an important part of our religion that to be without it is to go against it. We quite literally have a month dedicated to fasting to make us empathize with those lacking in our resources, making someone pay interest is a taboo in our religion because it’s acknowledged as a tool used to prey on the weak, and charity is such a huge part of Islam it’s one of the five pillars. There is an entire system dedicated to figuring out how much is the minimum you should give. And these are just the things I can think of from the top of my head!

Don’t have him learn about Islam through a member, terrorist group cult Muslim assassin is an ick but how about through learning about different religions? Maybe Islam spoke to him. That’s all for now since I’m not in analysis mode but asks are open for whenever!

Damian participating in Ramadan

because I want to put my blorbo into my situations

-Damian claims that he should be allowed to go on patrol still, but does acquiesce to only doing recon or protective missions. 

-Sleeps almost all day except to wake up for prayers, and then like an hour before sunset to ready himself for his day (a la Saudi Ramadan)

-Goes on patrol after Taraweeh, hides his costume under his thobe- everyone in the mosque can definitely see it but they’re all ignoring it. 

-Eats suhoor right after patrol, Alfred keeps it warm and ready just as he arrives

-Everyone else is very conscious of their eating during the month, literally running out of rooms if Damian is in it and they’re eating- Damian really doesn’t care though

-WE has a big employee Iftaar Gala- the one and only party that Damian is ever excited to go to

-WE also does open Iftaar every night for employees and anyone on the street who can use an extra meal at night

-Damian makes a concentrated effort to be nicer to his brothers during this month, which got more than a few concerned responses the first year, but now they all just appreciate the break and try not to antagonize him too much

-Once, there was an all hands situation before sunset and Damian insisted on helping- he had to take a second to break his fast, and then it took another half hour to explain to Riddler what he was doing; “Not even water???” “...No, not even water.”

-Bruce keeps emergency rations in his belt at all times, but he’s a little extra prepared during Ramadan in case they lose track of time or get caught up in a fight so that Damian can still have a Suhoor meal.

anyways i wasn't sure if i was going to respond or not because it has been a year but since it is currently Ramadan and it's going to end very soon I figured why not

also i know that there is a very slim chance of this happening because all of you are amazing but i will not tolerate any hate of any kind. if you

your first Ramadan after being married to Damian was certainly a new experience

before being married, you were just used to your parents handling everything for you

by the time you wake up for suhoor, the table would be set

by the time you'd be home from university, your mother would be waiting by the door with a date and a glass of water

so now that you were married and you had to handle everything on your own, it took a little bit of getting used to

luckily for you, Damian is a very hands on type of man

he's the kind of person who'd just drink a cup of water or a glass of milk, maybe a couple of dates or a fruit and he'd be ok for the remainder of the day

but god forbid you even think of doing the same thing

he'd just about have a heart attack

absolutely not

initially, he'd request Alfred to make meals for you so he could bring them home for the both of you to have suhoor together

just until the both of you got the hang of it

after that damian would either help you cook before patrol so there would be food ready for the both of you

or he'd swing by some restaurant that was open and grab some takeout for the both of you

he'd heat up the food and set the table and making sure everything was absolutely ready before finally waking you up

practically carrying your sleepyass to the table and handfeeding you so he can make sure you're eating properly

since he handles suhoor, you handle iftar and keep the table set so you can eat together

you could always just stay at the manor so you wouldn't have to worry about the meals, like bruce or dick have suggested so many times

but you prefer living alone with your husband

no offense to them at all

but it's just easier for you to maintain your modesty at your own home

anyways

your marriage gets really tested during Ramadan

the two of you are barely getting any sleep and it's difficult for you both to get used to

the only time that you both spend together and are completely present is when he should be patrolling

the lack of sleep makes you both kind of cranky

and it's difficult to not snap at each other

eventually you both get pretty tired and exhausted and just slip into routine

but of course it's nothing some sleep and some time spent together can't solve

and since you've been trying to reduce watching movies and listening to music during the holy month, you end up playing board games together or going for long drives together where you just talk and talk and talk

you thought you were extremely secure in your marriage

that was until you saw damian pout and give you the silent treatment after losing a game of gin rummy

then claiming you shouldn't be playing a game called 'jinn' in the first place

not swearing or talking shit during ramadan was especially hard for him

especially with tim and steph yelling 'fi ramadan?' at him everytime he makes even the slightest snide comment

you find it hilarious but i digress

whenever you go to the masjid for nightly prayers, damian and you will go and find a new ice cream place to try out late at night

you mention in passing how the women's side of the mosque is so bland compared to the men's and damian immediately looks into getting the mosque refurbished so that you and other women can enjoy it

damian's shoes get stolen once and the great detective actually couldn't find out who it was

you hear him complain about it constantly

CONSTANTLY

this time is when you both really lean into the adorable muslim couple aesthetic

matching prayer mats with each of your names embroidered on it

matching tasbih

and other things you get the picture

you both go all out for ramadan and decorate your home from top to bottom

since you both don't really celebrate many of the western holidays, he really wants to make this a memorable time for the both of you

and so do you

you hold an iftar party at your place many times with all your friends and family

it started out with you just inviting everyone but eventually it became a weekly potluck, which you really appreciated

bro damian is more excited about Eid than you are

he literally has to keep reminding you to get your dress ready for Eid al fitr

because he wants to get a jubbah in a matching color and surprise you

you know how you have those cute texts of girlies asking their bfs for their opinions on their nails?

except with HENNA

you send him like 100 different pictures a week, planning which design you want to wear for Eid

he responds to all of them with utmost seriousness

obviously, he's an artist

he knows whats the difference between arabic and indian designs for henna

but secretly he's wondering why you're sending him so many when you only have 2 hands

but um hello he's never going to tell you that

because it's ramadan and obv ramadan related stuff is going to be appearing on everyones fyp he has to deal with both you and dick sending him videos of the scholars being funny (iykyk)

not only is this month really special for the both of you, you take it as an opportunity to give back

damian has wayne enterprises run soup kitchens for the entire month and they serve all people meals as well as suhoor and iftar

you both volunteer there personally

you donate money of course and damian will tell you that everytime he does it, he feels fulfilled in a way he never has before

you honestly feel so proud of the man you feel blessed to call your husband

also, like the perfect husband he is, he sends gifts and food to your parents

who quickly begin to regard him as better than your own siblings

much to his secret pleasure

honestly ramadan is such a magical and rewarding time of the year

and you are so happy to spend it along with damian

he still cried about it to you the night before out of guilt

Here me out.

There's this girl in Damian's class that wears a hijab. He speaks to her in Arabic and they become friends and talk shit about other kids. One day a Karen mom sees this and yells, "This is America! On this land you speak the American language!"

And Damian replies, in Arabic, "There's no such thing as an American language." And she gets pissed and starts yelling but he keeps replying in Arabic. She just gets more and more pissed and leaves with her son.

The next day her son starts bulling Damian and his friend. He does nothing about this until the bully makes his friend cry and he stares at her crying face and walks to the bully who is like, "TF do you want, you terrorist?"

And Damians, "To do my religion a favour." And drops a bag on the kid and runs. And it's just chaos. Kids running and screaming, crying and all. The bomb squad, the swat, the fire department and the CIA is there all panicking about a terrorist attack. The bully is sitting in the class room in a puddle of his own pee, sobbing, traumatized and seconds away from fainting. When the bomb squad opens the bag and finds the Bible with a bookmark with a page highlighted saying," You shall love your neighbours as your equal." And on the back of the Bible, they find a note that says, "I'm an atheist."-Damian Wayne.

They are pissed. But who's gonna mess with Bruce Wayne's kids? One of the most powerful men in the world? No one.

actually i have something more important to bring up: damian is not muslim. nor is ra's. nor does the league follow islam. the more i dig through just where and when historically ra's & his origins are, the less it makes sense for them. ra's was raised by nomads, sometime before the turn of the first millenia. since dc doesn't do their research, this should actually place him in a nomad tribe around 500-600 BC/CE, not around 1000. the majority of the pre-islam tribes that wandered the arabian peninsula ( like his origin states: "he was raised by nomads but was fascinated by science since a young age" ) were predominately christian or non-religious. in the case of the al ghuls, i highly suspect they were part of a christian one given ra's naming the life-giving waters a lazarus pit.

ra's ( and his mother who he revived then locked away for thousands of years and his father that he kept alive until the 1980s-90s~ ) was born and raised before the rise of islam. i haven't pinpointed the right tribe for him but the majority of them initially opposed islam and even fought against the early adopters.

to assume ra's is willing to follow an organized religion or dedicate his literal cult of followers to it is a little blind to his very character. especially considering he sees himself as an immortal god thanks to his literal resource to bring the dead back to life. he has conquered death. he has power, wealth, followers: in his own eyes, ra's is a god himself.

for his family to be raised under this atmosphere, it is exuberantly ignorant to just see them and go ' hehe dami is muslim :) ' just bc he's arab. arab =/= muslim. given his upbringing, his family, the cult he grew up in: he's not.

Reader helping Damian decorate his room because back home, he used to decorate his house with his mother the day before Eid and it used to be SO MUCH FUN.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Damian,on a sugar crash, tired and so full of food, in reader's lap, and looking up at him and realizing he has someone who he can enjoy this day with, someone who is more than happy to celebrate with him.

The batfam is great but oh it feels so nice to have someone who enjoys and understands the culture and holiday to celebrate with you.
