Cooking With Christie: Quick Apple Cinnamon Buns
Inspiration: Thanks to my elementary school’s lunch lady, who loved adding way too many raisins for my liking and a brief stint in a supermarket bakery where I scooped the icing out of a five-gallon bucket with a gloved hand….My enjoyment of cinnamon rolls, in any iteration, declined significantly. However, as more years than I care to count have passed since either instance was relevant in my…

Hello, my question is about the Bowers gang and the music. I simply found it curious and fun and since Victor also seems to be a music fan and invited Evelyn next time to listen to music, my question is about her musical tastes, if she has a group. favorite or what genre of music do they listen to or if they have a favorite singer since Belch is a character who is characterized by the fact that he loves Metallica, so he asks me what type of music would each one listen to, Belch, well, he listens to metallica and anthrax (he has a band t-shirt and it appears in a movie if I remember correctly) Victor in one of the chapters says that he likes an Aerosmith song but from there I don't have an idea of the bands or singers I heard, much less Henry or Patrick, I feel Patrick would be the strangest, he doesn't even seem like a person who listened to music or is a fan of someone and Henry doesn't seem that way to me either, and also it's from the 80's so it's even more interesting because I love the music of the 80's. 80s and 70s.
First of all, I absolutely love questions like this! I’ve had the worst week, so this was a very welcome mental vacation. Thank you for this.
Anyway, let’s discuss everyone’s music preferences! I’m just gonna break this down character by character to make my life easier.
— Evelyn
Evelyn likes whatever songs catch her ear on the radio. Music isn’t a huge part of her life, so she doesn’t really have a favorite song or artist. She has songs she likes (a lot of those classic 80s pop hits), sure, but I doubt she knows the names of most of them. So far, I think the only artists I’ve specifically mentioned her liking are Olivia Newton-John, the B-52s (literally just for “Love Shack” probably), and The Beach Boys, but we’ll discover more of her interests later. It’s not a major storyline by any means, but it does get explored.
— Vic
This may be a departure from canon, but in my mind, Victor Criss is an early adopter of the whole 90s grunge aesthetic. Messy hair. Ripped jeans. Flannel. Oversized shirts. Drinking coffee and smoking weed. If this story took place in the 90s, Vic would be all up in that grunge scene. I’m honestly super bummed I couldn’t go that route with him, but mark my words, that boy will go full grunge in college. He will.
Since this story doesn’t take place in the 90s, a lot of people (and by “people” I mean the characters in the story) probably assume Vic’s into heavy metal like Belch, but that’s not necessarily true. See, Vic is very picky about his music, and I don’t mean that in a snobby way at all (although Vic can be a little snobby about it). For him, music is therapy. Vic just wants to get really high, listen to some music, and escape himself for a while. And the wrong kind of music can be painfully grating to him, like to the point where it would cause him intense physical discomfort. That’s why he’s so picky.
So what kind of music does Vic like? I dunno… I could see him being into psychedelic rock, artists like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Byrds, The Beatles, stuff like that. Vic is very private about his music, though. There’s a reason Christie Gibson can’t seem to figure him out.
It's also a pretty big deal that Vic has invited Evelyn to listen to music with him. Just saying.
— Belch
Next to Victor, Belch is probably the most serious about music. As we all know from the movie, heavy metal is his preference and his passion, but he’s also the kind of guy who can (secretly) appreciate a well-composed song regardless of its genre. That being said, Belch does tend to steer clear of the mainstream pop music scene… unless, of course, Christie Gibson is with him. Yeah, when those two are together, he pretty much lets her play whatever music she wants (because Belch is a good boyfriend).
— Henry
Yeah, I don’t think Henry is that serious about music. He listens to it, sure, everyone does, but it doesn’t impact his life significantly. Despite that, Henry’s tastes are probably very similar to Belch’s, simply because that’s how Henry gets exposed to most of his music: he listens to whatever Belch plays in the car. Apart from that, I could also see him being into bands like Led Zeppelin, Blue Öyster Cult, Deep Purple, Kansas, etc. But would he consider any of them his favorite band? Probably not, because Henry doesn’t have a favorite band.
Honestly, I think Henry has a very negative relationship with music in general. Anything that tries to tap into his emotions or influence his emotions, yeah Henry doesn’t like that. At all. He doesn’t wanna feel things. He doesn’t wanna think about his parents or his childhood. He wants all that shit to stay buried real deep.
— Patrick
For Patrick, all music sounds the same—and by that, I mean it’s all just “noise” to him. He doesn’t connect to it on any level, least of all emotionally.
In Chapter 5 (I think?) we saw Patrick using the radio kind of like a weapon. He purposefully messed with the knob to create the most annoying sounds his possibly could, hoping that it would drive the other guys in the car crazy. And it worked. Belch almost crashed the damn car. That pretty much sums up Patrick’s relationship with music. It’s just something else for him to manipulate and use for his entertainment.
So yeah, I could see Patrick listening to some really weird shit, like music that isn’t really music, but more like a bunch of random creepy/disturbing sounds put together. Patrick’s a weirdo. There’s no way he listens to traditional music.
___________
Okay, that's all I have to say on the subject. Thanks again for this ask! It was a lot of fun to think about. ❤️

watching the r primary debate with some red wine as streamed by a smarmy liberal dude. holy fucking shit a shitshow.
recap from a snarky blue haired progressive:
They opened with a message from Biden. Then a SONG that the candidates had to analyze the popularity of.
They all played Blame The Dems For The Economy, except Haley, who also quoting statistics on why the Republicans suck economically.
Christie said Ramaswamy talked like ChatGPT. Dammit Christie, I can't unhear it.
We got a whole 19 minutes in before the first "deep state" - DeSantis broke the levee on that one.
Minute 24: There was a video call from someone representing a conservative youth group. The kid basically said that climate change is biggest issues for young voters. How will you assure the American voter (esp the young voter) that you as prez/party leader care about this? The hosts asked for a show of hands if you believe humans are driving CC. Before anybody could Florida Man went on a rant about economics and China.
wait is Haley against the Dobbs decision? okay kindasorta asterick-asterick but she's WAY more moderate than the Florida man or the rest of the squad on stage. And also more realistic about getting the required senate votes. and actually named not arresting women for getting abortions.
DeSantis then had to ramble about abortion and how /he/ got it through in Florida and how he could totally get a national 6 week ban or more.
Minute 37 before anybody invoked their Christianity as political stance - Pencey-wency. (re aborsh).
oh the north dakota guy exists. right. he actually opposes a federal abortion ban. actually shocked he believes in the 10th amendment to that degree.
oh the Arkansas guy exists. he seems to think, much like Pence and DeSantis, he can just push it through on sheer power of will. same for Tim Scott.
Damn I wish I could play live shit on 2X.
Pencey-wency is walking a tight fucking line re Trumples.
47 minutes at invocation of Hunter Biden. (Christie, on crime).
49 minutes for "George Soros" (Florida Man).
ND Man's solution to crime to learn from small towns.
52 minutes to someone referring to Trump as indicated (Asa Hutchinson).
Hell of a tightrope that Christie is walkin' re: Trump.
I really do think Token Billionaire New To Politics buys his own bullshit.
Jersey Boy is out for blood. Productive? No. Panem & Circus? Yes.
so much flat out lying. from multiple people.
Florida Boy still won't answer yes/no questions.
Arkansas Dude actually said the word "insurrection." (1:07 in). and that he would not support a convicted Trump. genuinely surprised.
Jersey Boy actually seems to understand the VP oath of office as well. Haley dodged the question. DeSantis dodged it ramblingly.
Does Billionaire Man know what "contrition" means? Not convinced he does.
Is Pence pitching Jesus as his running mate? Or a physical copy of the constitution?
The Ukraine funding is actually showing some difference in opinion. From "not my problem THE BORDER" to "that's fucked up and we should fix it for humanitarian reasons but also to keep Russia away from us" to "not buddying up with Russia is empowering China." This seems to be the issue with the most diversity of opinion.
1:17 in and they have to explain how the bell works again.
More arguing about Ukraine. More arguing and non-cooperative-overlap regarding foreign aid and foreign military intervention.
Tim Scott: lets fire the IRS for national security!
There should be some mechanism where they CANNOT answer in rambles until they press a yes or no button. FFS.
DeSantis is REALLY into the anecdotes about "I met a random person and blahblahblah."
1:29 to "the wall" being said.
1:38 to "gender ideology" and "critical race theory" (Florida Man).
"The nuclear family is the great form of government known to mankind" - Billionaire's solution to education. Went on a rant about single mothers being "paid" to be single versus keeping a man around. he's winning the bonkers take award and it's not a field full of normal takes. see also: he wants the voting aged RAISED and having to take a test to vote?
1:43 - "lightning round" - "keep it 30 second, PLEASE."
1:46 "Judeo-Christian" (Scott). Followed by "break the backs of our teacher unions."
1:48: Jersey Boy has to answer a question about UFOs. "Would you level with the American people about what the government knows about these encounters?" not the most cray-cray question of the night.
Closing statements were pretty boring, honestly.

Closing the Book on 52 Books
Tumblr media
I saw a YouTube video not too long ago where a person talked about how they also read 52 books in one year and how it changed their life.
So, is my life changed?
No.
But I will say a weight has been lifted.
I initially started this challenge because I could not remember the last time I read a book (It had been at minimum 2 years since I read a book) and I wanted to fall in love with reading - I wanted to make it a lifelong habit.
Well - it certainly could have been my book choices but most of the time I felt like I was doing homework. I also thought by reading almost everyday that my reading speed and comprehension would increase - to be honest I never measured it AND don't know how to measure it, but I feel like I am about the same as I was.
What will happen after this?:
With my personality - I have recognized that I can drop things pretty easily without remorse. I could (and most likely) easily slide back into not reading books again.
A reverse addiction....
A Reverse Addiction is coy way of me saying that laziness is my real addiction.
Man-Oh-Man, I absolutely love doing nothing. I could do nothing for weeks if I could afford to or didn't have obligations (my internet persona is going from self appointed "Person Amongst Saints" (big JK right there) to a real Piece of Shit - no JKs there) AND I recognize that about myself.
And since laziness is an obvious realization for myself I started creating grand, yet arbitrary, goals for myself each year.
Back in college an acquaintance stated the "challenges" I set for myself were just punishements to keep me living in misery and I would have to disagree - yes - sometimes the goal I can set for myself can be tedious, exhausting, and eat away at my social engagements - but at the same time I like having something to look forward to - something to break me of my laziness - and it wouldn't be too far fetched to say that I don't at least least learn something new (either in knowledge or internalized retrospection).
Anywhosel, back to the books - Will I continue reading?
Well, I not going to worry about - I not going to set goals - so I do forsee I will probably not read much. In a perfect world What would be nice is if read about 1 to 1.5 books per month... 12-18 books per year... but no promises to myself.
.
.
If I do seek out some books - Here are some author's on my "booklist":
V.E. Schwab: I love their writing style - read two books already by Schwab. I have a third book of theirs already collecting dust that I am somewhat excited to read.
.
Taylor Jenkins Reid: Read two of her books - Thought they were good. Enjoyed a small discovery that her stories/characters live in the same universe - I wouldn't mind reading more of her stuff.
.
Stephen King: Only read one of his books, but I was thoroughly impressed and of course he has a reputation to stand up too.
.
Agatha Christie: I was a bit skeptical - but her mystery books are legit and I could use more mystery in my life.
.
Lee Child: This one I think I was most shocked by - Killing Floor (first installment to the Jack Reacher series) was sooo good. I think I wouldn't mind following Ol' Jack Reacher around.
.
Kurt Vonnegut: This dude has some effing style when it comes to his work - dark humor and a bit absurdist - kind of elevated punk.
.
.
And Now - Here is the list of books from my self described Worst Reads to my Favorites:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Love Hypothesis (Wasted Potential - BS premise)
Ready Player Two (An absolute fall from grace - Made me Hate fictional versions of John Hughes and Prince which in turn made me non-fictional despise the author)

Interview with a Vampire (Depressing)
American Psycho (No Charm - Boring)

Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊👂 Black Coffee (Hercule Poirot #7.5) (Agatha Christie, playwright; Charles Osborne, adapter/novelization; John Moffat, narrator) - you can definitely tell that the bones of this were a play; still an entertaining listen/read
😍 Differently Okay Local Idiots series (One-EyedBossman (desert000rose), SecretFandomStories) - 137K series, Stucky no powers D/s AU - absolutely LOVED this!!!! both are recovering vets with many jagged edges and they see how they fit together - the narrative structure on this was great: dual POV, very tightly overlapping/interlocking (which could gone badly so easily but I really think these authors pull it off). Can't wait for more.
🥰 Daddy Issues (His Boy Next Door #39) (RJ Moray) - novella - the next chapter in Jack & Channon's story
😊 K'diwa: A Steamy Novel of Interspecies Romance, by Jim Kirk (branwyn) - 103K, Kirk/Spock - tagged 'Jim is a sweet sad bottom and Spock can't stand it' and that's really what you need to know
💖💖 +128K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
It's A Very Distinctive Family Resemblance (copperbadge) - Leverage, MCU: Gen, 1.6K - I love every iteration of 'Eliot Spencer is related to Bucky Barnes'
Put It on Repeat, It Stays the Same (giselleslash) - MCU: Stucky, 20K - reread; love this story of these two pining FWB getting stuck together by a snowstorm and then ~~feelings~~
Rockin' and Rollin' (musette22) - MCU: Stucky, 3K - shout out to Minnie for taking up the challenge and writing some fucking delicious fic inspired by that mechanical bull riding video
fish in the sky (alby_mangroves, chaosmanor) - MCU: Stucky, 37K - http://ao3.org/works/27969167

John Golden answered the question, What are you doing while listening?: "Often working BUT usually play the St Paddy’s episode for the family feast."
James J. Grefig replied: "Hi Marc, This St. Patrick’s Day I hope I’ll be listening to your podcasts."
John Mahony replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hey Marc, Thanks for everything you do to promote Irish and Celtic culture! I usually listen while working on technical stuff. It relaxes me and helps me keep up with newer bands. For St. Patrick’s Day, I will be going to a lower - key party rather than hitting the bars, though I might stop at one or two. I help produce live Irish and Celtic music shows year - round, so I guess the answer is that I’m just doing more of the same!"
Edward Birdsall emailed: "Greetings; What am I doing while listening  -  out for daily walk if it is not raining or snowing here in Georgia (1 - 2hours long)  also I listen while donating platelets at the Red Cross which I do on average every 6 weeks which means 2.5 - 3hrs of show for that "
Chris Raisin replied to the question, 'What are you doing while listening?': Usually lying in bed with my eyes closed (but not asleep). And for Patrick's Day? "Probably the same as I do for any other day (being 73 years old, single and living alone having lost contact with all my friends due to those infernal lockdowns we had in Melbourne." He's celebrating "By just listening to your great podcasts each time they are issued and remembering back to my days as an energetic Scottish (yes, not Irish) Country Dancer and Highland dancer (not so good at the Highland stuff…LOL). I still have a kilt in my closet (a bit moth eaten now) which I ceased fitting into about 30 years ago. Keep up your great sessions, and I look forward to (I hope) a bonus session. Slainte!"

October 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
A full week late, because life, but here it is!
Total books read: 5
Total pages read: 1,317
Days read: 18/31
Average star rating: 3.45/5
Challenge Prompts Filled: 8 in October; 107 total. Popsugar: 2(34)/50.   Romanceopoly: 2(31)/39. CRAD: 1(10)/12. BTBL: 3(32)/52
*I made some adjustments to what prompts I’m actually looking to fill this month (mostly cutting or tweaking things I know I won’t enjoy, like sci fi and paranormal books. Adjusted total prompts for each challenge are as follows, and will be what I use to count things in November and December: Popsugar/49; Romanceopoly/36; BTBL/50
The SEAL’s Secret Daughter by Christy Jeffries  ⭐⭐⭐(½)  This was the first book out of the 95 my mom and I are sharing from a library fill-a-bag book sale – lots of chintzy Harlequin romances in my future! Good thing I like them, though, and this was a pretty solid addition to the genre. It's predictable, it’s cheesy, I love it for something easy and quick to read through. The characters were fun, the plot held my attention, it was exactly as described on the package, and sometimes that’s exactly what I’m looking for.  Prompts filled: BTBL – Plants on the cover
The Honey-Don't List by Christina Lauren  ⭐⭐⭐⭐(½)  After I mowed through The Unhoneymooners last month, I knew I wanted something else CL for October. This caught my eye on a library browse, and it kept me engaged every step of the way. I was SO invested in the romance between Carey and James, but also the struggling relationship between Melissa and Rusty. The police interviews scattered between the chapters left me dying to know what happened and how we got there, and the eventual payoff was worth every minute of the wait. I laughed, I chuckled, I didn’t cry, I’ll probably end up re-reading at some point. Also, fantastic representation of chronic illness, for people seeking that out in their reading.   Prompts filled: Popsugar – a book with just text on the cover; Romanceopoly – free choice
The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary  ⭐⭐⭐(¼)  I wanted to like this book more than I did. Road trip trope, second chance romance, and I loved the Beth O’Leary I read last month. This should have been made for me. It was … fine? I wanted to keep reading, but the dual timelines threw me off, and the LI’s best friend was more obnoxious than he was redeemable. They kept me hooked with the Rodney of it all, and with wanting to see how Addie and Dylan worked things out, but I don’t know that I’d read it again.  Prompts filled: none
Truly Sweet by Candis Terry  ⭐⭐⭐(¼)  This was cute! I grabbed it from my shelf to fill the CRAD prompt for the month, but also because it’s been sitting around for a while and I hadn’t made time to read it. I’m glad I did! It was a good park read, until the rain picked up and I had to go coach, and saw me through a handful of shifts at work and an afternoon sitting in the stands with a bunch of my high school kiddos. It’s not about the book itself, but when the kids got a little out of hand, I told them to ‘straighten up, or I’ll start reading from Chapter Five of my romance novel. I’ll skip the scenes that aren’t for school, but I will NOT be offering context on chapters one through four!” They were … suitably threatened, but as a result missed out on a very fun little romance story. The writing was light and fun, even when the story was serious, and the plot was well balanced. Definitely a cheesy romance worth checking out.  Prompts filled: BTBL – Horses.; Romanceopoly – Historical romance with a rake; CRAD – First letter of author’s last name is the first letter of the title
Emergency Room by Caroline B. Cooney  ⭐⭐⭐  A quick, one-day read to round out the month! I grabbed this from a thrift store, mostly because the name caught my eye and the blurb on the back looked interesting. I’ll risk 99 cents on just about anything, when it comes to books. It was … alright. I think they lost me a little bit in just being a little outdated (it’s almost 30 years old, for cripes sake)but the idea of seeing an emergency room through the perspective of teenaged volunteers was an interesting one, especially from students who weren’t used to the inner-city setting. I enjoyed reading it, but don’t necessarily know if it would have held up for more than 200 pages.  Prompts filled: BTBL – This school is not what it seems; Popsugar – takes place entirely in one day

Sad to say that Bailey lost her Lolo. It has been a sad couple of weeks of her asking "Wheres Lolo?" They spent a lot of time together. He would drive w/ Mom @nydia.villanueva.52 almost every weekday to pick Bailey & Finn up from Santa Clara and spend time together in Milpitas until Christy or i came to pick up the babies. I'm going to miss seeing how happy they were together. My heart goes out to Mom, my 2 brothers, @alvynart & @lloydstarhiphop , my wife @therealchristyv , the Villanueva relatives, and everyone else affected by the passing of Albert Villanueva. Rest in Peace Dad. https://www.instagram.com/p/CmBQyR0OxDO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cooking With Christie: Brigadeiros
Inspiration: Last amongst the treats I whipped up this year as holiday gifts were Brigadeiros. The recipe I used was from the 2017 American Test Kitchen Christmas Cookie issue. However, while brilliant at turning out some of the most reliable recipes around, the ATK site requires you to pay to gain unrestricted access to their site, or you need to purchase their magazines and/or books as I do.…
