thinking abt mad rat dead in like. a cultural context? i’m certainly no expert, but this is maybe the first jp edm rhythm game that’s both accessible and has an international release?
pretty much everything i know about in these circles is some kind of arcade cabinet type thing with a really specific control layout which like, even if needing to have a big ol’ machine around and learning its weirdass unique control set weren’t big enough hurdles, i’m pretty sure the vast majority of those things don’t release outside of japan. sure you can probably get a rom or something and play it on your computer or whatever, but so much of these games’ feel is based on their tactility and the physical way you interact with them it’s just, yknow, not the same.
mad rat dead is just. a console game. you’re not missing out on anything playing it with a normal controller, and it’s a platformer, which is a lot less arcane to general audiences than all the stuff going on with other jp rhythm games. it’s also a great introduction to these Styles of music since it keeps its tracks more mellow and thematically cohesive; but all the same it still lovingly features the traditional Camellia Insane Hell Bullshit Track bc it’s not a jp edm rhythm game if you don’t have at least one song composed specifically to torture you
anyway im saying all this to say i need there to be a spiritual successor/sequel to mad rat dead that goes into the weirder and rougher edm styles and kills everybody who doesnt know what theyre gettng into
