#NONE OF THESE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT A CENTRIST IS
Text
Rarer D&D alignments
Bastard Good: You make the world better for people but in a really obnoxious way so everyone low-key hates you for it
Chaotic Dead: You set yourself on fire at the start of each session
Informed Evil: you're wearing a red cape and cackling so we kind of assume you've probably done some bad things off screen, right?
Lawful Pointless: You follow the rules of chess in every situation you find yourself in.
False Neutral: HAHA FOOLS! I WAS NO DRUID! I WAS A PALADIN ALL ALONG!
Lawful Anxious: You follow very strict laws but you don't know what those laws are or if you're breaking them.
Personal Evil: rather then making things worse for sapient life, you work to make things worse for Steve specifically. Everyone else is fine.
Centrist Neutral: "I don't support The Chained God Tharizdun breaking free and unmaking all reality but if we stop him through force we're just as bad as he is. Did you know there's actually zero difference between good and bad things?"
Sponsored Good: You provide justice, compassion and the great taste of subways sandwiches! Put in the code SMITETHESINNERS when ordering online for 20% off!
Sexy Lawful: You follow very strict rules but in such a way we kind of suspect you're getting off on it.
Chaotic Incidental: You act completely randomly but by sheer chance your actions turn out identical to if you followed very strict rules.
Theoretical Good: You want to do good things to help the world and once you stop binging Netflix you're absolutely going to.
Ugly Neutral: None of the other alignments want to hang out with you so you're neutral by default
Chaotic Meta: You pointedly refuse to follow the rules of the game you're playing.
Thirsty Evil: Look, orcs are hot, ok?

during my witcher game last night i was confronted with a question - is florian de kasimir a cat or a dog person? and over the course of the following 6 hours i delved deeper, and added the third axis - horse.
i have now categorised my ttrpg ocs (a generous term for some of them) in accordance with their energies. less cat people than i expected!

basically the rules of having opinions about amy if you're someone who's been in the fandom forever are
you are not exempt from being wrong due to not actually remembering or analyzing the book. in fact, you're actually at higher risk of it
if you ever reach the point of seeing people disagreeing with each other about amy and having the automatic response of 'tch...everyone here is annoying for caring and probably equally extreme and polar and unmoderated in their opinions. if only everyone could be like me (Neutral and Uninvolved and Nuanced and Reasonable)' please realize that any time you start sounding like a centrist going on a proud rant on twitter thats a bad sign regardless of what the topic is
i know you have very difficult memories from the spacebattles era but it's been years since then. you have to let it go. not every amy argument is spacebattles. actually, almost none of them on here are. it would be helpful to actually acknowledge what the people involved are saying instead of projecting your own memories of Darker Times onto them. its ok. you can let it go.

I am on record disliking "centrist" LXC jokes, because they have been disproven by canon analysis already in better essays than I can manage right now, but I also don't buy "I can fix him" jokes!
Rather than "I can fix him" syndrome, LXC's attitude (towards everyone: his brother! his friends! his uncle!) reads to me as "I want to do good and make the best of our circumstances (within my power)". That means, for example, encouraging Wangji to make friends but still following sect rules when it comes to punishment. It means supporting his brilliant friend's ambition and making sure his angry friend doesn't kill him first.
None of those things include fixing, because I don't think he is under any illusion that Clarity will fix NMJ - he'd have to change his way of thinking, first, and LXC canonically has given up on this or never even entertained the thought (as shownfor example when he does not argue further in front of NMJ's mulish responses about JGY's abuse in Jinlintai, or when he has to concede to NMJ and other sect leaders clamoring for the Wen slaughter).
As for JGY? He does not need fixing, and LXC is the first to recognize that. His goals are worthy and his methods, well... are often the only ones available to him. So what he needs from LXC is just support and understanding, and tbh JGY gives back as much and more than he gets (as shown in canon with the rebuilding of CR, being his confidant, etc.) So LXC does not try to change him, because he believes in the man he is now and in his overarching goals being in line with the greater good.
Basically, LXC does not try to change JGY because he believes him to be right, and he does not try to change NMJ because he knows he won't listen. So I don't get where this headcanon of LXC as the "I can fix him" man comes from when he is just a decent guy who helps the people he cares about, supports his little brother's unwise decisions and protects him from repercussions, provides palliative musical therapy to his friend who is bound to die regardless, and is emotionally present for the man he loves even when he cannot do anything else but offer him a handkerchief in times of struggle.
Basically, "I can fix him" implies a naivete and a rejection of the reality of their circumstances that is in fact not in line with Lan Xichen's canonical diplomatic skills and emotional intelligence.

Out of curiosity I watched the video showing Adam and Ghira and oh my god y'all were right. This man really did just stand there with his arms up while him and other faunus are being SHOT AT 'Pls stop we're harmless :((((' and then has the flat out audacity to get mad at Adam for saving their lives. What were your plans if someone died, Ghira??? This guy sucks and I don't blame Adam for losing all respect for him.
no like what was that moment meant to serve for ghira? because adam was in the right. i know the show loathes to actually let the man have a point but adam was shot at, alongside other vulnerable faunus!, by a human supremacist & when he reacted in turn to defend himself: ghira admonishes him! like! ghira got hurt but adam is in the wrong for taking out the threat? what kinda fuck shit is that.
it's frustrating because before this, adam was fighting non-lethally. after being shot at repeatedly before that & with sienna's permission to do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ignore long adam okay there's nothing i can do about him smh.
but his attacks are mostly to knock them out via kicks / slams & his sword remains sheathed up, while getting shot at by supremacists, up until the human supremacist is shooting at ghira who has no aura. it is a last resort & one that i would not object to being the first when he, again, is being shot at with other faunus! considering this entire context with adam having been a former child slave, he is in no way for the wrong in this & i hate that it's ghira & later blake who are admonishing him for this action when they face none of the danger & the latter is a privileged, protected princess amongst her own people.
like is the point here from crwby that in the face of racialized violence, you shouldn't fight back or you're as bad as your aggressor? oh wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
god i miss sienna.
Tumblr media
& as an extra, fuck blake for this little comment she has about it. i know they used this moment to reinforce adam's "emotional abuse" of blake but in context: girl. you are one of the most privileged of your people alongside your father, were protected all your life as an island princess, meanwhile you're saying this to a former child slave.
"this isn't the first time humans have died" maybe they should stop? attacking the faunus? if this was the moment they wanted to show adam as in the wrong, then maybe they should've actually had him be in the wrong instead of showing their full white comfort, centrist ideals on display.

Out of curiosity I must ask, what League of Legends champion do you absolutely loathe lore wise?
I don't mean that you hate them every time they're on screen and wish that Riot never made them, mind you. I mean they're good in design and execution, but if you were in their world, you'd punch them directly in the balls.
God, like... most of them? Yeah, most of them probably. Might be easier to count the ones I wouldn't get angry with.
Understand, most of these characters are people who wield tremendous power and who, out of the necessity of storytelling, makes really bad choices about how to wield it and wield it unilaterally over other people.
Like, Shen for example, good ol' mister Eye of Twilight, Keeper of the Balance and so on... also happy to just let people get Noxus Murdered because of spirit balances or whatever. Fuck that guy. Punch him in the dick. Nasus is too busy feeling sorry for himself in the desert to give a shit about helping the people he was once sworn to defend, Swain is a military dictator, Darius is the enforcer of military dictatorship, Garen and Fiora both aid and abet an ongoing genocide while Lux is a reprehensible centrist about it, Xayah and Rakan are terrorists targeting human civilians, Bard happily lets entire villages be slaughtered while he collects magic artifacts, Vex killed like hundreds of thousands of people during the Ruination... it goes on like this.
So yeah. Lillia is cute and good and deserves the world. Ekko and his crew have never done anything wrong, ever, and protect Zeri at all costs. Yuumi is baby. I'd try goat's milk to drink with Braum, and I'd love to share a campfire with Taliyah and her folks. Nami seems alright, Neeko would be fun to chat with, I wish to build a snowman with Nunu and Willump. Poppy is okay, but we don't know if she's on the mages' side yet, so, hm. Soraka is welcome at the party though!
And y'know what, Seraphine and Gwen can come too, they seem like they'd be baseline pleasant to have around.
EDIT: inb4 none of this means you're not allowed to like any of these characters or that enjoying them and fanjoying over them is problematic or w/e, please do not be weird about this

It’s a cloudy November day when he wins. No rain, no smog; simply overcast. The weather could almost fool you into thinking that this is any other day. Another Tuesday nearing the end of the year, who cares?
If she lived a different life, maybe that would be the case. Alas, she does not—she lives this one. After a win in the primaries and an election sixteen months in the making, they’ve crossed the finish line. Well, he has. Marcus Pike, the latest (and greatest, though she’s biased) congressman Vermont is lucky to receive.
And who is she exactly? If you asked her, no one. Ask him, though—
“Everyone, please give it up for Miss Alex Dozie!” Marcus booms. His voice carries across the room easily, naturally. Like he’s made for this. He is.
They all follow his word like gospel, the raucous applause almost as loud as the heartbeat in her ears. Alex watches more then feels Marcus take her hand in his own, lacing their fingers together as he lifts their arms in the air. Together in victory. That’s what this is, isn’t it? A victory and this is their celebration party. Surrounded by staffers, donors, volunteers—you name it. A variety platter of New England’s who’s-who all here to celebrate the congressional win of Marcus Pike, a rising star and thought leader in the Democratic party.
He’s a little too centrist for Alex’s liking, but despite being press secretary for his very political campaign, they never really get around to talking shop. Hard to chat about affordable housing with his tongue down her throat.
Alex sinks back into her body slowly. Marcus lets her go, replacing her warm palm with a glass of champagne. He continues his speech as she flutters through the crowd to the very edge of the room.
“It’s been a long journey. A lot of hard work from everybody in here. I also want to thank…”
Alex tunes it out, gazing blindly across the room. There must be almost 300 people in here. She had never known what that looked like. Does she even know that many people? One hundred living souls, and then triple it. The fact astonishes her. Even more people voted for him and got him here. They believe in Marcus Pike.
Being him right now must be about as close as one gets to playing God.
Marcus starts to wrap up his speech, catching her attention again. He’s searching for her face, bright like a beacon. He breaks into that million-dollar smile of his when sees it.
“I want to thank you,” he says. The words are spoken to a sea of suits, but she knows what he really means. “I truly couldn’t have done this without you. We are going to make a difference here. I can feel it. And for that, I am forever grateful.”
We. That alone makes Alex feel all gooey inside. A small smile fights its way across her lips.
The crowd breaks into amiable chatter, the party portion of this formal celebration spreading like a virus as more drinks are made and softer pop music spouts out from wherever. Alex has half a mind to meander over to coat check and grab her things. Before she can convince herself, Marcus sidles up beside her near a darkened window.
“By yourself?” he asks.
“As is preferred,” she says.
Marcus hums. “Well, I guess you’ll just have to put up with me.”
“Terrible, truly.” But it’s all smiles; he is all smiles, Alex mirroring him.
They have to keep it cool here, professional. She can read his eyes. You look beautiful. The heavy blink and bashful glance down at her shoes will have to suffice as a thank you. Alex watches as Marcus readjusts his tie, thick fingers grazing the soft fabric. She wishes they were in her mouth instead.
“Great party,” she says, clearing her throat.
“Yeah. Got this press secretary, she planned it all for me.”
“You’ll have to get me her card.”
“Of course,” Marcus says. Light laughs fall from both of them. “You did a great job.”
“It’s alright,” Alex shrugs.
“It’s amazing,” he insists. You’re amazing.
“All previous party planning experience was organizing my senior prom.”
“And it’s still fantastic, look at you.”
“The process was much easier with a congressional Platinum card, trust me,” Alex says. Then she holds up her drink—not the standard fare of J. Lasalle but a Bourbon Ginger from the open bar—and lets it fall in a clink against Marcus’ half-empty flute of champagne. “To money.”
“To success,” he says.
“Yeah, that too.” She lets the prickly pleasantness of ginger root and dark liquor slide across her tongue. It burns going down, but she likes it like that. “So… What are your plans for the rest of the night?”
“I dunno’,” Marcus says, shrugging his shoulders. His voice lowers to a whisper. “I was thinking about breaking in the new office. You?”
“Does breaking it in have anything to do with fucking me in it?”
“It could.”
“I’m pretty amenable to these plans, then,” Alex says.
Marcus offers her his hand again. “Follow me.”
They wait as the tide of partygoers pushes in, making their escape when it falls back, slipping through tall double doors. Marcus leads Alex up a back stairwell, heels clicking against wood. He lets her lead the rest of the way, watching the slink in her step and the sway in her hips. He hates it when she leaves but loves to watch when she walks away—and tonight, he gets the best of both.
Alex stops at the doorway. She waits for him to cross the threshold first; it only feels right. Marcus pulls her in by the elbow, a goofy grin overtaking his face.
“C’mere, gorgeous,” he says.
They connect at the mouth, soft and gentle like Marcus’ hold on her waist. He runs a soothing finger over the material of her dress—smooth white satin that swathes over her hips and neck, leaving her shoulders bare. Vintage Ralph Lauren on loan; Alex couldn’t dream of owning something this expensive with all her lingering Howard loan debt. The dress, along with the pearly cream heels that were once her mother’s, is a drastic change from her outfit at this afternoon’s swearing-in ceremony: a dress with frumpier sleeves, sitting just below the knee in a purple bright enough to rival a red clover. She’d hated it, feeling trapped inside some illusion of a church girl with her hair pressed into long pin curls.
The way Marcus looked at her then, same as now, made it worth it. He thinks the world of her, along with the Sun and the rest of the solar system too. He slides a hand across her chest, a nipple peaking against the fabric. When he squeezes, her cunt drools. Alex slips a hand into his hair, pulling hard enough that Marcus moans into her mouth. They move as a unit, one step at a time until he has her caged against his new desk.
They break only when she looks down, hiking the smooth fabric up to expose the bottom half of her body. Marcus cups her gently over her underwear, feeling dampness against the heel of his palm.
“Couldn’t have done this without you, sweetheart,” he whispers against her lips.
“You could have,” she says between sweet kisses to each cheek.
“I didn’t want to.”
Alex smirks. “Lucky you, then.”
She likes to tease, but the self-satisfaction on her face falls when he presses his hand against her harder. The pressure against her clit makes her ache, moving her hips up to meet him. She starts to grind against his hand. Marcus watches the wet patch on the gusset between her legs grow as Alex gets herself off. Lucky him indeed.
“What do you need, baby?” he asks.
“Touch me…please.”
A small gasp falls from her lips when he peels her panties down, Alex lifting her hips to aid in the effort. They wrap around her ankles, caught by the backs of her heels. Marcus touches her bare skin, already wet and sticky when he runs two fingers against her.
“More,” she says.
"Hmm, I don’t know,” Marcus says. “I think you like it like this.”
“Marcus Jordan Pike…put your fingers inside me or get the fuck out of this office.” Her tone is breathy but commanding, drawing his attention from her hips to her eyes.
He doesn’t need to be told twice, slipping a finger through her wetness before sinking it into her cunt. Alex moans, and Marcus moans with her. His starting rhythm is slow and purposeful, searching for that spot that gets her eyes to cross as she bites her tongue to keep quiet. She cants her hips in time with him, meeting every thrust of his middle finger as slick squelches onto the webbing of his hand.
A high whine tears from the back of her throat when Marcus finds what he is looking for. He adds his index inside of her, massaging the spongy spot inside of her with deft attention.
“Fuck, Marcus,” Alex sighs, panting into his neck. She holds him close by the shoulder, arm wrapped around to his neck as she pulls lightly at his ear.
“That feel good?” he asks. All she can do is nod. “My baby feels so good, huh? You worked so hard. I’m so proud of you. Let me help you relax.”
Something about being called his baby has her weak in the knees. She likes that, just a little. Alex would never admit it, not in this environment of all-or-nothing stances, not even to him. The feminists of this town and the Internet would eat her alive for admitting even the fantasy of being a kept woman turns her on, just a little. Still, Marcus can tell by the way she clenches tight around him.
“Such a sweet thing…so smart, you know that? Couldn’t do anything without you.”
“Marcus, please. D-don’t stop, just—right there.” She stutters on a breath when he presses his thumb to her clit. Alex’s thighs clench around his hand, trapping the limb so he can only move from the wrist down.
“It’s okay, you’re okay. Feel it, baby. I’ve got you,” Marcus whispers against her ear.
He captures her for another kiss, languid as he speeds up his fingers and the circle of his thumb. She cums with a cut-off cry and a tremble of her hips, pulling him closer and pushing him away with her body as she creams over his fingers. They stay joined a few moments longer; she sits up a little more, smoothing out the collar of his dress shirt.
When Marcus moves his hand, Alex fulfills her wish. She takes him by the wrist and leads his fingers to her mouth. She tastes herself as they pass the wet heat of her tongue, swirling between the two digits for good measure. Marcus groans as he watches, mesmerized.
“You’re killing me here,” he says.
“We wouldn’t want that, would we?” Alex asks. She reaches for the zipper of his pressed slacks, hard cock waiting for her underneath. “Public servant and all.”
The zipper needles down easily, two buttons on the inside of the linen plucked undone in a moment. She rolls Marcus’ pants down to settle over his ass, revealing to her the pre-cum stained front of his briefs. Seeing the pair of novelty underwear she got for his birthday, Alex laughs. His cock is covered in bald eagles.
“Why is you laughing at me still sexy?” Marcus asks.
Alex draws him in by his tie. “’Cause you’re a perv,” she says.
Marcus scoffs, but there’s no bite in it. “I don’t have a comeback for that.”
She works him out of his underwear, spitting onto his shaft before giving him a stroke. “That’s how you know it’s true.”
Alex sets them into motion, leaning back to signal Marcus. He immediately swipes everything—nameplate, important government documents, a miniature post holding the American flag—off the desk and onto the floor. He runs his tip, slick and swollen, through the mess of her cunt. Teasing her, he presses against her clit like a button, making Alex jolt.
“Just fuck me, dweeb,” she says.
One thing about Marcus is that he takes direction well. He slides into her with ease, both moaning in sync at the fit and feel. Filling her with one thrust of his hips, she makes him stay there for a moment, savouring the sensation. The fullness is enough to make her feel good—sometimes it’s enough to make her cum, like when they sat together in the campaign office, her on his lap as she squeezed her cunt around his thick cock to orgasm.
Then she taps at his hip, pulling at Marcus’ forearm to get him to meet her horizontally. His thrusts start quick and small, grinding against her insides as he never quite leaves her. Idly, she wonders how many times they’ve fucked in an office. The campaign office? They’d made up a bit of an accidental schedule, twice a week on Tuesday and Friday when everyone usually went home before seven. A handful of times in his car, which were always her least favourite no matter how long Marcus ate her out to make up for it.
Once in her bed. It was late August this year, the air balmy as she and Marcus stepped out of that upscale bar in one of those times between overcast clouds and dripping rain. He’d had a few too many to drive home, and Alex lived just three blocks over. She hadn’t meant to fuck him. It was only the second time, after a quick and easy mistake they’d made on the fold-out table that operated as the volunteer command center; that particular night, there were still Vote4Marcus stickers in her hair when she got in the shower.
But Alex did fuck him, and it was amazing. Probably what spurred her to keep fucking him. Not the money, or the potential power. Just the tender, semi-drunk sex they shared on her double mattress. The only time it ever happened.
She’s trying to calculate how many Tuesdays and Fridays are in eight calendar months when a particularly sharp thrust catches her attention. Alex groans, but not in the sexy way, as Marcus punches his cock into her cervix. It feels good still, in a way, but the pinch of pain is throwing her off.
“H-hold on,” she mutters, so quiet she can barely hear herself. Marcus keeps going, fucking her with a hand at her sternum for leverage.
“You feel good?” he asks.
“No, just—hold on,” Alex repeats. She places a hand over his as Marcus slows to a stop.
“Everything alright?”
Before she can answer, they both feel his phone buzz in his pocket. Marcus pulls away from her, wiping his hands on his pants to check. She sees his mouth screw up in a side pout as he reads whatever message is waiting for him.
“Time to go?” Alex asks.
“I just—this big donor is heading out, the McCaskills? Polly wants me to start greeting people as they leave.”
Another one of many times Alex would love to tell Polly Friedman-Blau where she can put her tight smiles and wandering eyes.
“Of course.” She’s already standing, lifting her leg to pull her underwear back up and over her crotch. They are uncomfortably sticky, but that won’t be a problem for long.
“What do you mean, of course?” Marcus asks behind her.
Alex turns, smoothing out her dress. She’ll have to find a bathroom to properly fix herself up before heading back downstairs.
“I mean, come on. What are you, the lobby boy?” The hurt anger bubbles up from nowhere, shocking her as much as him.
“They donated thousands of dollars, Lex.” She hates that name. He knows she hates it. “We wouldn’t be here without them,” Marcus says.
She makes for the door now, shaking her head. Alex ignores the burn between her thighs. She doesn’t make it to the hall, though. Marcus grabs her arm, pulling her back to him.
“What?”
“Can we just—can we not leave tonight like this?” he asks. “I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry.” He peppers her face with soft kisses, gentle with his words. “When it’s all said and done, I’ll find you. We can continue this back at my place.”
His place. The place she’s never seen. Something roils hot inside her, small fireworks snaking and sparking between her ribs.
“Okay?” Marcus asks.
“Okay,” Alex agrees.
He fixes his pants and she straightens his tie. Marcus is off again, heading downstairs. Alex lingers in his office for a minute longer, taking it all in. They made it. They are here.
When an appropriate amount of time has passed, she wanders out to find a bathroom, closing the door behind her. A few party drunkards have made it upstairs. Alex smiles politely and ducks out of any potential conversations by moving onto the stairs and heading down. A bathroom presents itself at the foot of the steps, a golden sign that says ‘Ladies’ waiting for her.
The door swings inwards silently. Alex hates to say she’s impressed, what with the horrible screech of her own bathroom’s hinges. A glance in the mirror tells her she doesn’t look too crazy. Taking advantage of the empty presence, she locks herself in the very last stall to take a piss. As she wrangles the wafer-thin toilet paper, she hears the door open again. Not so silent after all.
Two sets of expensive heels—four clicks against the stone floors—echo throughout the room. Alex is about to get up and flush before someone speaks.
“Oh, I don’t know,” one woman says, voice low. “That girl he thanked… I’ve heard some things.”
“She’s not a girl. We’re all women here,” another woman says.
“Could’ve fooled me,” the first one snickers.
Alex keeps her breathing even, still listening. “What’s the word on her?”
“Oh, you know. The usual: she’s sleeping with him.” Well, that’s not inaccurate. Still, it stings to hear coming from— “She’s only in it for the money, you know? Supposedly, she had a thing with her TA back in undergrad.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. But then she set her sights on political office. But she doesn’t want to be the man behind the desk. She just wants to reap all the benefits.”
“Little does she know, all those men have some sweet thing under there to keep ‘em warm.”
“Trust me, I think she does. Bold of her to assume he’d ever make her First Lady.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, Marcus Pike is a name you remember. Alex Dozie? Come on. We’ve already had Barack and Michelle.” The other woman doesn’t say anything to that. “There was something about his fa—”
Alex takes that as the time to strike, pressing the metal button jutting from the wall to get the toilet to flush. In a few seconds, she unlocks the stall door and saunters out to the sink. Silently, she rubs soap between her palms and fingers, sticking her hands beneath the automatic tap to rinse away the suds. The women are exactly as she expected: thin, white, and beautiful. Their dresses look much more expensive, much more modern.
She wonders if they’d say all that if she looked more like them.
Alex waits ‘til the door shuts behind her to let the tears well up. Well, shit. This is supposed to be the night of everything right, and it’s all going terribly wrong. She walks blindly, water blurring Alex’s vision as she keeps her head down and eyes forward. Eventually, she reaches an office on the first floor. Fine wood paneling and frosted glass windows. The office chair is practically calling her name. When she slumps into it, the tension bleeds from her spine. Somehow, the leather seems to have that new car smell to it.
It takes a few minutes to realize that this is her office. She recognizes it from pictures Marcus sent her. Their tiny what-ifs were turning into reality, and this was one of them. If I win, you’re taking this office. It’s the nicest one…besides mine. There were so many of those that Alex began thinking it impossible for them to lose. Like this was fate or something.
Fate; destiny. She was meant to do this. Fuck whatever Malibu Bitch numbers one and two think. Who cares what people know, or think they know? Alex is here, and she knows exactly why. It has nothing to do with the…extra-curricular activities between her and Marcus Pike. It was because she’d worked her ass off; because she deserved it. A tenuous thread of hope, sure, but it was enough to keep her from finding Marcus and quitting on the spot like she wanted to.
Instead, she heads to coat check and gets her purse and jacket. Alex tips the lady with President Andrew Jackson, calling a cab in the lobby. A long, hot shower and a good night’s sleep will make everything better; it always does.
Tumblr media
Alex wakes at five o’clock. She does not feel better. Somehow, she feels worse. Whatever slathered over the surface of her skin last night has settled, sinking deep into her bones. It’s not quite anger, or sadness. A churning disquiet has taken up in her gut, leaving no room for breakfast or coffee. A box of things sits on the kitchen counter, waiting for her to take it into the office—her new office. Alex almost forgets it three separate times.
The drive is sure to be the only calm part of her day. Alex savours it, taking the easy route through town. The building is cute, not a monster when it’s not plugged full of people. It’s an eclectic mix of brick and metal on the outside, dated but sleek on the inside between hardwood and glass. Inside is quiet, too, which she enjoys. Still, her stomach stirs with unease. It feels like everyone stares when she walks in.
Alex’s thighs ache, a reminder of what she and Marcus did last night. She bristles at the thought, shame creeping up the back of her neck. Maybe they shouldn’t do that here. This isn’t some rental space in Downtown Burlington. This is an important office.
She puts her box down at her desk, the contents landing with a thud. At the top of her trinket pile sits a framed photo: Alex and Marcus, smiling as she waves at the camera from the hip. She forgets now what they were talking about, one of the earlier Vote For Marcus Pike banners hanging behind them, pinned to a wall. This was a month into Alex working for him. A month of wondering if he still remembered, and figuring out quickly that Marcus didn’t. The first real conversation they’d had where she had no excuse to duck out of the office or wander away. The first real conversation with the man that would change her life.
15 months ago and yet it feels so far away; unreachable. Alex wants to crawl into the picture frame, claw back time to when she knew what she was doing here. The objective was simple. Get Marcus elected. Now? One night and she’s been sent into a tailspin.
When she looks up from the photo, it’s because of all the clapping. When does all the goddamn clapping end and the real work start? Alex was starting to wonder. She moves from her desk to the doorway, catching a glimpse of what the fuss is all about. It’s Marcus, of course. He doesn’t see her; how could he with all the people in the way? He glad-hands and smiles his way through the office. Someone takes a photo—fancy camera, flash on—and Alex blinks. She’s been injected into Clinton-era comic strip, waiting for them to bring out the baby to kiss.
Marcus Pike gets applause for showing up to do his job. Sure, it happens, but when did that become her life? Her reality? Alex does not belong here. Clearly, he doesn’t need her here. He didn’t call last night when she didn’t show.
The campaign trail was then, and this is now. She is of then…Marcus doesn’t need her now.
Thank god for the printer in this office. She types up something quick, waiting for the blocky machine to whirr to life. A quick, six-sentence letter of resignation spits out moments later. Alex takes it, folding it in two. She goes to grab her box of things, Marcus’ eyes staring back at her. She leaves it.
Her heels click and clack against the floor as she makes her exit. Letter clutched in her hand, she doesn’t notice the tiny young woman in front of her until they collide.
“I’m so sorry,” she squeaks first.
“It’s my fault,” Alex says, shaking her head.
“You’re Miss Dozie?” the woman asks. She looks a little scared, a little reverent.
“Unfortunately. Why?”
“I’m supposed to bring you some briefings,” the woman says. Alex notes the badge on her lapel. Office aide. “After I bring Mr. Pike his coffee.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it. Okay?” Alex asks. The aide nods, brow furrowed in confusion. “Could you do me a favour, though?”
“That’s my job, ma’am.”
“Could you put this on Mar—Mr. Pike’s desk for me? Preferably when he’s away from it,” Alex says.
“Of course, ma’am,” the aide nods. Alex wishes she knew her name.
“Thanks,” she nods. “Good luck up there, hey?”
Alex walks away, through the lobby to the front doors. In less than an hour, the weather has changed from overcast clouds to sputtering rain. Albert Hammond serenades her with guitars, alerting her to a phone call. She almost picks it up, finger automatically reaching to press the ‘answer’ button. Alex thinks twice about it, checking who it is. Marcus, of course.
Frozen on the sidewalk, rain pelts her head as she watches the phone ring. After about a minute, it stops, his name disappearing.
Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I’ve often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don’t they warn ya’?
It pours, man it pours

PJO & Palestine pt. 2
This is going to unpack some bullshit I've seen about Rick Riordan. For pt. 1 about why "boycotting Disney" is not actually the thing you need to be doing right now, go here.
Imma try to keep it brief this time <3
In addition to the misleading info about Disney as a boycott target, I've seen some ridiculously facile takes about boycotting the show because of Rick Riordan.
As far as I can tell, the drama stems mostly from this blog post, where he shares his (fairly tepid but still principled) view of Palestine and Israel.
Here are some key takeaways:
The blog post is from Oct 17, 2023. Only ten days into the genocide, and with plenty of attention still lingering on Oct 7 worldwide. As far as I know, he hasn't shared any updated reactions
Should he? Maybe. Here's what he has to say about it in the blog post:
Tumblr media
He goes on to talk about having readers in both Israel & Palestine:
Tumblr media
Maybe you think he should pick a side. Maybe you're sick of both-sideism and if you see one more media take equating Israeli grief to Palestinian grief during a motherfucking genocide you will launch yourself into the sun. Rick goes on:
Tumblr media
I don't know what you were expecting from a children's author whose overarching theme is, "You might think you know who the monsters are, but be careful; black-and-white thinking like that reduces us all."
[SPOILERS for non book readers] In PJO, Percy ultimately agrees with Luke that the system is unjust and can't remain as it is. Luke's willingness to sacrifice the lives of their friends is the thing he can't support.
The series deeply explores questions of monsters vs. victims, how our circumstances shape us, institutional injustice...
I get the anger when people, especially celebrities and the media, use calls for nuance to avoid taking a stand. I don't think it's accurate to say that's what's happening here.
Tumblr media
I said I'd keep this short and I've obviously failed, so let's get to the most damning part of Rick's blog post:
Tumblr media
This is what has people calling him a Zionist. And do I kinda hate it? Yeah, I do. That line "security and support" is propaganda that Israel has spent 75+ years feeding into the global media machine. I also hate that the overwhelmingly pathetic response of most public figures has conditioned me to be impressed by breadcrumbs like 'Palestine should also be secure and supported and free.'
So there you have it. Rick's opinions from 10 days into what has become a 100+ day genocide.
Maybe this all sounds unforgivably centrist to you, and that's your right. You don't have to engage with his stories. Approaching content with an eye to the author's real positions and attitudes is a healthy way to interpret media critically.
However, I'd really like people to remember two things:
This is not a JKR situation. Watching the show does not give money to someone who actively uses their platform to spread hate.
If this is about your own media purity, I have bad news for you. Literally none of your faves are perfect, and neither are you. Trying to only interact with un-cancellable media is futile, discourse-killing, and self-absorbed at a time when there are more important things we should be doing.
Ultimately, the choice of whether to engage with content from someone whose views you don't agree with is your own. You get to decide where to draw that line.
I, personally, can respect a lot of what Rick says here. He's a children's author using his platform to speak to children. He has his eye on the long game. He still emphatically argues for a free Palestine.
There have been other betrayals from other artists that I couldn't tolerate. It's a personal choice.
So please, stop shaming people for watching this silly little show. Stop trying to police how others engage with media that isn't hurting anyone.
There's work to be done.

So I followed Sabine Hossenfelder a few weeks ago thinking, "Here is a cool science lady" and then out of nowhere she releases a video on trans people where she is all, "Trans people are crazy and I'm normal!" and then dubiously interprets trans studies for 20 minutes. Then, while claiming she is the levelheaded centrist only seeking objective scientific facts, she references Jesse Signal, a bad faith anti-trans "journalist", as a scientific source.
I also hate this notion that the only metric for the success of gender affirming care is a decrease in depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Those are certainly goals. But...I mean, life is tough out here even if you aren't transgender. You can feel you've had a positive outcome with your transition and still struggle with mental health. I think that is clear by the low regret rate. And even when people are able to tackle their gender dysphoria via transition, we cannot discount the effects of poor societal acceptance. Not to mention the cruel legislative onslaught currently underway.
It's like, "Yay! I'm finally who I'm meant to be!"
But also, "Ack, these transphobic dipshits are trying to kill me!"
No other treatment is held to the standard of creating shiny happy people at a 100% success rate.
And yes, drugs sometimes have side effects. All drugs. Even over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol. There is no medical treatment without risks. And if we banned every treatment that had the possibility of a bad outcome, we would have literally no medications at all. She was very serious about all the bad things that can happen with blockers and hormone therapy but didn't mention how uncommon those risks are. She didn't mention that bone density is closely monitored. And the risk of heart trouble she mentioned was for older patients getting treatment for prostate issues.
Which makes me wonder why in the world she did not at least consult an actual trans person? Or even a doctor that provides gender affirming care? She just googled everything and interpreted the data with her physics brain and didn't even think to run her interpretations by people with actual expertise.
I'm not even sure a purely scientific analysis of trans issues is possible due to so many variables not being quantifiable. You can't just toss out the politics and focus on the science. The politics are a huge part of transgender existence right now.
And I don't even know what to say about her giving credence to the "social contagion" theory. Her only evidence was a theory concocted by a single person. No studies. No peer review. When I was in high school, none of us knew anything about being queer aside from the existence of gay people. We'd never even heard the words transgender or nonbinary. And even my friends who were gay didn't even consider that as a possibility until they went to college. There just wasn't any information available to teenagers. All they knew was that something was different and they had no resources to help them figure out what that different feeling was.
Teens are not being infected by a social contagion, they just have better access to information. They can also find more support and acceptance in online communities. Not to mention any competent gender affirming care program will do extensive evaluations to rule out things like peer pressure or someone seeking attention. Contrary to conservative belief, they don't just throw hormones and puberty blockers at everyone during their first appointment.
She quickly discounted the left handed analogy because some gender affirming treatments have lasting effects. Which didn't make much sense to me. All that analogy is meant to explain is that teens are more comfortable with queer introspection and feel less pressure to repress said queerness. The huge increase in queer teens matches almost perfectly with the dawn of the information age.
She also said that biological sex is "simple" (it is not) and then handwaved the existence of intersex people as "rare." First, I think the number of intersex folks is undercounted, but also, they are just as prevalent as people with red hair. When there are 8 billion people on the planet, even small percentages add up to a lot of people.
It was just a mess of a video.
I am disappointed in what I thought was a cool science lady.

[cw: discussion of rape]
i Am talking about a real person's oc when i'm like "why in the fuck did you write your character having sex with angela in the first week". and i'm talking about them for a really good reason.
angela is introduced as the glados of lobotomy corporation, your suspicious robot assistant. you as the player don't even know what sex Means to her, other than that she's just told you "yeah i was designed to be sexually available".
your player character turns out to be her maker, and her abusive father figure if you do not intentionally write him as his own entity. it's a valid alternate reading! but this player didn't know anything about that yet, not even enough to define his character AS a separate entity.
now to anyone who perceives this game for more than five minutes, angela is obviously not okay. okay people do not say shit like that on first meeting a complete stranger. and even if the player character is not ayin, not written to be related to her at all, there would have to be a slow slow burn for things to turn out okay.
so that's the fiction.
all of that would, on its own, be completely innocent. a hypersexual survivor with similar trauma to angela's might write that by accident, or with the intent of having the characters do a weird false start and then they work it out later on. hell, a survivor with similar trauma to angela's might deliberately write it as a kink scenario. none of these are inherently harmful, because they're not hurting anybody.
but then this person turned out to be an whole ass IRL Rapist whose entire predatory MO was based in using fiction to groom and exploit people who did not understand the intersection of trauma and sexuality.
and that is where you cross the boundary between fiction and reality, and that is why i am a ship discourse centrist lksdfghlgh
tl;dr:

I've seen a lot of progressives and leftists ask a question that can be boiled down to the following:
If Biden is a candidate that bends to public opinion, especially center and left of center (all the way to the far left) political voices, then how did we end up where we are with Biden supporting an unpopular war and more unpopular genocide?
Well, the simple answer is that it is not an unpopular war or an unpopular genocide, even if you do not include any self identified republicans in the discussion. For example, a poll taken in mid December:
Tumblr media
Even among Democrats, it's basically a 50/50 split on supporting Israel or Palestine. Add in the Independents and there is a clear preference for Israel. And with the republicans it wouldn't even be a contest.
For another statistic, approval of military aid to Israel and humanitarian aid to Palestinians:
Tumblr media
As we can see, 67% approve of at least as much military aid as we are giving. 67% is not split. That's wide spread support. Sending bombs to Israel is widely approved. The silver lining here is that people do want aid to Palestinians more than they want bombs to Israel (the seeming contradiction here of supporting both likely means that back in November the Israel propaganda that they were "targeting Hamas" was sticking quite well among Americans)
The good news is that over time opinion has been shifting against Israel. You can see the effect in a poll where responders were asked which side they were more sympathetic towards:
Tumblr media
While unfortunately this poll shows none of the three groups actually favoring Palestinians over Israel, it does demonstrate that generally there has been a shift away from Israel support to support of Palestinians. We can likely chalk this up to the brutal and unjustified civilian killing's getting more coverage because of on the ground reporters and people spreading their reports.
We don't have easily accessed poll data since the South Africa genocide accusation and opening evidence at the trial.
Last off, it is widely agreed that Americans generally support a cease fire, with the numbers I've seen saying north of 60% of Americans currently support a cease fire.
Armed with this information, what can we do?
I've said before that Biden is a man who follows public opinion, every time. It has made him useful to us in the past. Right now it is working against us because our voice is not the loudest and certainly not the most wide spread. Biden is doing what Biden does best, following the political wind.
In my opinion, the most impactful thing we can do is outreach to moderate democrats and centrists (if we can). The more of them we convince, the more of the voting base of Biden will demand he change course. This is a case where more voices is intrinsically better than loud voices. We, as progressives and leftists alone, are simply not enough.
If you know any moderates, convincing even one or two people of how bad the genocide is can make a world of difference. If every progressive and leftists were to do this then it is likely supporting Israel would become politically untenable for Biden.
Now this might seem somewhat obvious but there are a number of important take aways.
Talking about it on our social media echo chambers is not going to cut it. We need to reach outside of our normal political circle or our efforts are effectively worthless.
We need to use arguments that will convince moderates and centrists. A high minded lecture on colonialism and land back theory is, at best, going to go over people's head and at worst alienate them. We are talking about the first baby step towards those ideas. Luckily we don't need to resort to theory.
A basic discussion of civilian casualty rates and the brutality of the Israeli army should be more than enough to convince basically anyone that this is not a "proportional response" and goes far beyond the reasonable limits of "self defense". Keep in mind that people almost never change their mind in front of you, they reflect on it later and change their mind then. A short five to ten minute discussion will be more than enough to get you started and will keep the door open for more discussions.
Use current events as a launch point for the discussion. Protests, the ICJ trial, and major events in Gaza itself (like the current threat of bombing a hospital) all are perfect launching points.
Keep the discussion focused primarily on Palestinians and what is happening to them. The death of obviously innocent people is politically straightforward and less likely to trigger the "oh the middle east is so complicated" reaction. "The death of children is not complex. Whatever a person might think of Hamas, Israel is the one killing children now. They should stop, because killing innocent children is bad." That is an extremely hard point to argue against.
Remember, we are not trying to "win" arguments. We are trying to help people see.

also hot take (?): but vampires DO have souls. the creation of a vampire in btvs lore is literally that a demonic essence/spirit/spiritual energy (in this instance a vampiric one and not some other kind of demon) enters a human corpse and parasitically latches on, altering the human corpse to better suit it with an initial burst of spooky evil demon magic (which is part of why i never think any lore that says vampire can't do magic makes sense like, how do you think they even function fam?). it then uses the info and identity of the former inhabitant that's all still locked up in those dead synapses to help it acclimate to the new dimension and build a sense of identity. you can argue that the vampire is not your dead friend but what is a person if not their memories and thoughts? all of which the vampire now shares too. so that's a fun little thing to puzzle on in philosophy class.
vampires in the buffy world are pretty explicitly a manufactured creature built of a demonic essence/entity grafted into a human cadaver which merge to make a new species which is why they're so low on the demon hierarchy. they're the most mongrel-y of all the half-breeds. what is the soul if not a spiritual essence that fuels and motivates the body? the metaphysical component that makes the system complete? what is the vampire of not a perversion of the human condition? does it not then stand that the vampire soul is the twisted mirror of the human one?
the thing is that while this is Kinda Common Sense when you sit down and just look at objectively how the vampire is made it's a dangerous concept in universe and we fall pray to believe the same propaganda built to ensnare our characters.
the slayer was made in almost the exact same process as a vampire only with a living subject-- a demonic essence grafted into a human host. there is no magic leash on a slayer, there are no words that can be chanted to bring her to heel, the watchers have to use standard psychological manipulation to control her. a slayer who realizes that she has more in common with vampires on a fundamental level than she does humans (tho not on a moral or motivation level obvs) is very dangerous to their control and to the concept of "slayer as sheepdog" as a whole. conditioning them to see vampires as animals and not sentient humanoid beings with thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams, who have souls that while demonic are no less valid in their existence then any human one is integral to keeping the machine working and keeping your young emotionally/mentally vulnerable weapon from having a nervous breakdown because she just you know, massacred a whole bunch of people. fangy people, but people none the less.
btvs and the watcher council mentality the main btvs cast is tainted by is incredibly human centric, watch even a little of ats and it becomes glaringly obvious. ats is extremely flawed but one of it's strongest points was letting us see the expanded world of demons and non-human culture. the issue is then that buffy and co come off as rabid human-centrists because of how they talk about vampires and demons as a whole. there's a reason tara didn't want them to know she was half demon when she thought that line was true. the scoobies spout anti-demon rhetoric like it's their jobs. the way they treat anya is horrendous and it's because she has the Taint of demon and neurodivergence coding (which is a whole different kettle so).
the continued talk about spike like he's a subhuman while he's either at their mercy or on their side is galling. you cannot be called the good guys and then treat other sentient creatures like animals and vermin to be killed or mocked for your amusement. full stop. you cannot claim a moral high ground and behave like this which is what the scoobies consistently claim. they believe they are in the moral right and have the moral high ground consistently. when in reality they are pretty fucked up and have done repugnant immoral shit multiple times (hello all the various scoobie caused invasions of personal autonomy!). you can be a protagonist and have uh... Dodgey Morals™ (ex. the punisher) but when you claim you are better because you have better morals but also refuse to see the other side as even worthy of being seen as a truly living creature with like feelings and shit now i'm treating you with contempt.
there are people who will say that buffy was the sole victim of the toxicity that is s6 spuffy but if you believe that you also are tacitly agreeing that her belief that spike is an "it", an animal with no bodily autonomy to respect or feelings to hurt or be manipulated is true. and why? because he's a vampire? he has a soul, a demonic soul. he literally would not exist if a metaphysical entity/force hadn't entered william pratt's fucking corpse and make it theirs. this is an inherently repugnant act and even if we all sit down and agree she did nothing else to contribute to this toxicity she still looked another sentient being who she knew had some kind of feelings for her, used his want and his desperation to abuse herself with and spent the entire time considering him as something between cattle and a lamp. i'm sorry but that's wildly fucked up at it's core and if you can't see that i worry for you.
what if she was dating a nice half-bracken guy and she did all that shit to him? if he tried to stop her from turning herself in for a crime she didn't commit and then beat him bloody and called him an it, a thing, not a person, not real? are you still okay with that because he's a demon? are humans the only species in your eyes with the right to personhood in this universe? do you, like buffy and co, prefer to take the words of a group known to manipulate everything and who treat girls like buffy as things themselves over the evidence you see before your eyes on screen and the actions and words of the demons themselves? buffy's actions towards spike from s4 to s6 are repugnant because they're no longer enemies and she's no longer the council's attack dog but she still refuses to give him the basic decency of personhood.
and you can get into all kinds about shit about how vampires are evil and he's done terrible things and i will not respect you for using any of that to try and say it's okay to treat someone who you relay on or are in any kind of relationship with like they're a thing. otherization and depersonification are tools used to make it "okay" to commit atrocities. for every spike who you say it's "okay" to treat like an animal, there's a harmony who isn't really all that bad and happily switches to bagged blood and integrates pretty peacefully into human society when given the chance. and she will get put right next to spike as an animal to be killed because she doesn't matter. using his past actions to deny him the right of personhood is a lazy tactic to divert the discussion and absolve buffy and co of moral failings.
the nazis are also evil, but i will not deny they are people. doesn't mean i wouldn't take the shot if i had one if i was put in that position. it just means i acknowledge i ended a life that probably meant something to someone. and that's my issue with buffy and co. that's my issue with "vampires are soulless" and buffy's treatment of spike in s6 and how people talk about it. regardless of literally anything else either of them did, denying another sentient being the right to be acknowledged as one while still demanding things from them is inherently a core repugnant act. she is willing to use his feelings and body for her advantage but also refuses to respect them as real and just as valid as hers. again, how would you feel if she treated lorne like this? if she demanded things of him but didn't respect his basic right to be seen as a valid sentient being just like her?
in btvs vampires have souls, demons have souls, and they all deserve the basic decency to have that acknowledged. even by the slayer. especially by the slayer frankly since she is also in her own way One Of Them and if she's going to hunt them down and kill them she can at least acknowledge that she ended a life and didn't just flip an off switch. if you can't get with this whole concept of the validity of non-human life in a universe where the MCs humanity is frequently questioned and the Other and Otherism is frequently a theme then i really am not interested in talking to you.

When the race actually heats up next year* and you can show me a legitimate, viable third party pro-palestine candidate with the genuine potential of drawing not just the leftists but also the centrists away from the democratic voting pool in order to stand up against the historically united republican party
Then absolutely YES i WILL show you my commie ass voting against Genocide Joe
But UNTIL then
I see absolutely no moral high ground in helping to put the Genocide+: Premium Edition! candidate back in office
Trump is going to be worse, y’all realize that, right?
He is going to be worse for, literally, everyone who is not a Gun-Toting Flag-Humping Straight White Fascist American Male.
And that’s just talking AMERICANS, before we even get into his international policies. You think this man is going to be better for Palestine? For Sudan? For any of america’s greedy little interests all of the globe?
I don’t WANT Biden. I am literally begging, please, fucking ANYONE better. I want OUT of this bullshit two party system. I want the ENTIRE fucked up american election system dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up
But until we can actually do that I genuinely don’t understand how Trying To Keep The Largest Amount Of People Safe As Possible is seen as… the selfish decision. That boggles my mind. What point is there to inflicting more suffering on the people of this shit-show country? Who does that help? Who does that serve?
What is the actual alternative?
GENUINELY if somebody’s got a PLAN for the presidential election chime in because honest to god i haven’t fucking seen a single one yet just a lot of “No Joe! No Joe!”
Show us the actual fucking independent alternative with the pull to draw a majority. Cuz right now all the other dems up for primary are fucking yahoos.
Or, you know, actually kick off some shit and tear it all down.
Until then the damage mitigation needs to focus on getting the centrist dems OUT of congress and leftist or progressive independents IN
And none of that will mean SHIT if we get another Repub wave in blocking fucking everything like the LAST time Trump was president and all his MAGA cronies got brave.

The Tarlos fandom (on twitter) has got so cruel. On FOX’s birthday post about Ronen several people commented “I hope it’s his last”. I don’t understand how people can have so much hatred for a person that they wish them dead. Particularly a person who we know cares about the environment, LGBTQ community, animals etc and from the reports of those who have met or talked to him in real life seems sweet and to really care about his fans.. He’s not an evil person. They are accusing him of being pro genocide and I still don’t understand why. In both posts on instagram that are in his own words he talked about loss on both sides. Innocent people suffering through nothing they’ve done and how much he hates war. How does that equal pro genocide. Yes in the early days right after the initial attacks (to which he appears to have had a personal link) he might have reposted some more controversial posts from other celebrities but I think he deleted them before 24 hours (so acknowledging they were wrong to share?). I can’t be sure on that as they are certainly long gone now but I think when I went looking after seeing people go off on twitter they weren’t there . He hasn’t posted about the war in a few weeks, he stopped deleting pro Palestine comments on the Biden post quote. I think that means something. Now, none of us know what he’s thinking or what he’s doing outside of the few minutes he shares with us. He might not say anything anti-Israel /pro Palestine but doesn’t mean he hasn’t learned.
That is gross, the person running that Fox account shouldn’t have to deal with that for just doing their job. Twitter can be a cesspool at the best of times and these certainly aren’t the best of times. He’s said a lot of things I don’t like, and I don’t personally find any kind of “peace on both sides” placation super convincing when it comes from someone who cheered for weapons being sent to a military that is committing genocide, but I hope he’s learning. I really do. He seems from what Ive seen to have a very centrist liberal view of all this but he is a very centrist liberal so I’m not surprised by that. The propaganda is real. I don’t judge anyone for being mad at him or for being done with him but I’m hoping it’s a good sign he’s stopped posting and has deleted donation links. Unlearning something you were taught for 30 years is not a small task and it’s not gonna happen overnight.

with the new game theory up about gen loss there’s been some discourse going back and forth, namely with people expressing their annoyance and others reacting as if game theory is the victim of cringe culture and deserve a chance.
this isn’t a full break down on everything that game theory (and matpat specifically) has done wrong, or even a call to cancel him, but rather my personal experience with the channel as someone who’d been a fan from basically the beginning of the channel who instead started avoiding it entirely.
1: consistent background transphobia. things like misgendering frisk for several videos and streams despite people actively trying to correct him or making lazy “I sexually identify as an attack helicopter” jokes during stream as late as 2020.
2: while it’s very true that pewdiepie is an ingrained part of youtube and it’s not uncommon to have him show up in creators’ histories, game theory has not only actively promoted him through controversies, has not only defended him through controversies, but has actively “called youtube out” for giving pewdiepie a slap on the wrist by leaving him out of youtube rewind in 2019 (and, hilariously enough, claimed that it was proof that youtube was silencing gamers on the platform). other creators tend to be Ignorant to pewdiepie’s alt right following and larger controversies, but matpat clearly knows and has used his influence to actively back pewdiepie up.
and sure, I do think the answer is that he’s probably still ignorant to a degree, but this is to the point of malicious ignorance. judging by what I’ve seen of him over the years I’d peg him as a centrist, but that doesn’t change the ugly ideas that he ended up placing himself behind knowingly or not.
3: he’s a serial theory thief. he’s stolen dozens of theories at this point by either taking them wholesale or combining them with other theories that he’s Also stolen to get something new. he does this without asking permission and often without credit. and even when he Does give “credit” what this will often amount to is a single line at the bottom of his description no one will ever read.
I understand why he’d rely on ideas from the communities themselves while theory crafting, he’s been doing this for a very long time and breaking a series down enough to say anything meaningful about it Takes Time. but the lack of verbal credit within the videos themselves is unacceptable. the fact that this has been a consistent issue For Years paints it not as an accident but as intentional on his part. this is speculation, but in my opinion it seems to me that he’s worried people will notice when what he actually has to add to a conversation is Rather Thin compared to what he’s lifted from other people, so he just avoids giving credit and hopes that people won’t notice.
4: his theory on petscop, which is what Actively made me choose to stop watching him forever.
I won’t get into specifics, but a part of his theory was connecting the plot of the story to the real murder of a child that was, to his credit, referenced within the unfiction series/arg. which is Cringe but wouldn’t be worth listing as a crime on it’s own.
however what he did was describe the murder of this child In Every Horrific Detail in the most disrespectful way I have ever seen. the only warning for this that he put was a general content advisory on the episode being “dark and upsetting” at the beginning, which frankly Was Not Sufficient. it was disrespectful to the memory of the child and potentially triggering for the viewer (which I know from experience).
there was no reason to do this in the way that he did and I can’t think about the man without remembering it.
none of this is a condemnation of anyone who’s a fan of game theory, but rather a psa for anyone who believes that the dislike for the channel or the man behind it comes purely from cringe culture. he’s done things that categorize anywhere from “genuinely concerning implications for his real views as a person” to “generally a dick move,” and either way is a perfectly valid reason to simply not like the man and not want to see him in your spaces.
I’d also like to encourage people to add onto this with their own points, as I frankly don’t want to see more of him to find out what else he’s gotten into since I started avoiding his content like the plague.

bro get over ur 'performative feminism' idiocy 🙄 personally, i think half of ur analyses r shit but i can still find valuable or at least respectable commentary in them, just like i can find valuable or respectable commentary from those 'performative feminists.' as i should. bc thats how critique and discourse needs to be approached. just bc u can write a rant and do research doesnt mean ur arguments will be worth anything. and theyre prob not worth anything if u cant even respect the ppl ur addressing
I have to tell you, I’m fucking fascinated by this. There’s just so much here.
This will be an honest attempt at interpreting this, a long and at times quite serious reply to your rather unserious anon.
What is the point of sending this, anon? When I get anons like this, I can’t help but muse what prompts their authors.
1. I mean the least charitable interpretation would be that you want to insult me but in a way that to you subjectively upholds the pretence of respectability or intellectualism?
2. Or maybe your goal is to actually encourage me to change my behaviour?
3. Maybe you want to educate me on the proper way to do fandom “discourse”? Or on the merits of the philosophy you present here?
Any of those? None? All of the above a little bit?
______________
If option 1 was your sole objective, I’d say it works only as an insult. The tone of your ask is all over the place and it doesn’t really match its content. If I were writing this, I wouldn’t have called my analyses “shit” and the “performative feminism” “idiocy” while chastising me for lack of respect for the opinions of others. I don’t mind you matching my lowbrow energy and tone, it’s just that in my opinion you contradict your point by going down to my level.
Maybe something closer to this:
“(...)the phrase ‘performative feminism’ doesn’t have a place in proper critique or discourse(...)”
“(...)I find half of you analyses poor quality, unwarranted or downright wrong(...)”
______________
If you were aiming for 2 exclusively then, alas, shaming and condescension doesn’t work on me at all, for personal reasons.
______________
Third option is the one actually fascinating to me. You’re not the first person here that would be trying to lecture me on how there is a right approach to fandom “discourse”, namely your way. But you know, why not. I too hold very strong beliefs.
There are two issues with this working, though.
1. I don’t find your argument internally coherent. I will try to interpret what you’re saying, to show you how I understand it. Which may be completely contrary to what you were trying to say.
2. If my reading of what you’re trying to say is close to your intentions, I sense that we’re not really close ideologically and we don’t share values.
1.
The way I understand your last sentence is that according to you an opinion loses its value by default if it doesn’t meet some respectability standards.
Yet a few sentences up you claim that you manage to find some “valuable or at least respectable commentary” in my rants, I’m not 100% sure which rants do you mean exactly here. All of them? Or just those that are “shit”? How can you find value in something that you seem to consider to be by default void of value?
I’ll be real, idk what “respectable commentary” could possibly be, but if I show no respect to the people I address, then how could my commentary be respectable.
This confusion is also amplified by the mismatch of tone and message. Because according to the rules you laid out I should disregard what you’re saying completely, because how can your arguments be worth anything if you aren’t showing respect to me.
2.
And here we come to the clash of values.
The way I understand yours, is that you subject yourself to fandom takes that you find low quality or wrong because that’s the right thing to do. That according to you we should all strive to find something positive in all sides of an issue.
It reminds me of the centrist political “both-sidedism” almost turned into an art form. And centrism irks me because I’m a nasty lefty, a social justice warrior. I’m very far from the so-called “centre”, which in real politics is usually just non extremist right wing ideology. I will use “leftism” as an umbrella term here for various ideas, both economic and social, including feminism. It's a very reductive approach but in this case I don’t think a distinction is needed.
Social media platforms can have a heavy political slant, and fandom Tumblr on average slants left.
The problem is that in many cases it’s image building and not true understanding of the issues that comprise the political leaning. It’s using, but more often misusing buzzwords and appropriating language, sometimes in active attempts to render words or terms meaningless. All in the pursuit of maintaining the image of being “for the good things and against the bad things”. It’s a performance.
Performance that is self perpetuating because the people, who indulge in it, will pressure one another to express “correct opinions” on whatever is the hot topic of the hour. To always be available for outside scrutiny. Those people feel obliged to have public opinions, and have them fast.
Fandom and social media are a funny territory where petty arguments about characters or plot choices get mired in real world political topics and ideologies. While it is true that art is always political, political criticism usually can’t be nailed down in one catch phrase. And it definitely can’t be done without honestly engaging with the text and the context it exists in.
In the JJK Tumblr tags you will find a shit ton of posts, no longer than a paragraph, usually no longer than a single sentence, that call Gege a misogynist, that say that “Gege hates women”. And they will usually use one argument for that, namely that female characters die in JJK. Or more recently, that they are irrelevant to the plot. Both these takes stem from bastardisation of academic discourse surrounding female characters in fiction. They are in bad faith, they show that the person reflexively regurgitating them has no desire to engage with the text seriously and probably doesn’t know where such considerations came from, or understand how they functioned in their original context. But sometimes you will see more dedicated clout-chasers, who try to write meta posts on the misogyny in JJK without having a basic understanding of feminism, just trying to string together popular hot takes. Just to show that they don’t “mindlessly” consume media, that they are not afraid to criticise it and its author, an all out a woman hater. Show it in the most vapid and thoughtless way possible.
That’s why they are a performance. And this performance is to build the image of the op as a feminist, a "Tumblr good person". That’s why they use the trappings of feminist critique. That’s why I call it “performative feminism”.
An important thing to understand about me is that I don’t treat leftism as a zero sum game. I believe that political movements, organisations, people and works of art, can be doing some leftist things right and some wrong. That perfection on this is impossible. But there are also non negotiable issues, issues that you can’t really do a bit right, because human dignity, safety and livelihood is at stake. For example I’m not interested in listening to people who will condone genocide, I don’t think I should try to find value in their arguments. But I also don’t find value in reactions to genocide that dehumanise and use genocidal language towards a different group, even if a subset of that group is committing genocide. For me genocide is a non negotiable issue. I don’t respect people who try to perform support for genocide victims by justifying genocide others. People who instead of donating to relief support, or promoting relief support and direct pressure on government, chase clout by shouting out their vile opinions under the guise of supporting the victims, regardless whether they understand their own bias or not.
But you may say that I’m exaggerating, using a real life issue to illustrate my disagreement with your values, when maybe you were just limiting your philosophy to fiction. But my character flaw is that I’m very principled. Especially when it comes to my grander principles trickling down to more trivial stuff.
I don’t think I should respect people who appropriate and misuse feminist language to chase social media clout. I don’t find any value in their behaviour. I find it actually harmful. It reinforces this trend in first world leftism that activism can be done by yelling the right buzzwords on social media. Especially the right buzzwords about popular media. That activism and social critique doesn’t require engaging with the ideas, interrogating their own preconceived notions. That it makes them a “good person” when they misuse academic language to shit on a work just because it’s popular, just because they want the clout of an intellectual who can see through the mainstream. While it’s painfully obvious that they have no idea what feminist critique academic or casual is, or what the words they abuse mean, or what modern feminism even entails.
Can you see how funny it is? This idea that they can position themselves as above the mainstream, as the betters of those who enjoy mainstream, by reflexively regurgitating the most popular hot takes. And this lazy behaviour is purely voluntary because no one has to have an opinion on everything. It’s actually impossible to have an in-depth and well researched opinion on everything. So if you don’t have the time to do research, or to even properly familiarise yourself with the work you have the very valid choice not to. Have the choice not to parrot a hot take for the sole purpose of performing activism. You have the choice to just divert your attention elsewhere, towards things that you will engage with in good faith.
Because this kind of bad faith approach can lead to darker things. Because you can actually make yourself believe that your behaviour isn’t just a vapid social media act, you can convince yourself that you’re on some moral high ground, that you’re actually fighting against evil.
If Gege is a misogynist, if they hate women, it means that they are actually vile, a bad person and it’s ok to use violent ideation while writing about them. This is normalising dehumanisation for clout points. Priming yourself for viewing people and situations like this.
Gege is kind of an abstract entity for these people, it feels harmless because, come on, they will never meet Gege. And obviously this is all hyperbole and they wouldn’t really get violent.
I witnessed it in real time when a group of people in fandom decided that my friend was a bad person. Over trivial fandom shit. They dehumanised my friend amongst themselves and proceeded to attack my friend for months, until they left Tumblr. Attack them in racist, misogynist and queerphobic ways, while claiming it’s okay because my friend is an actual evil person, they are actually dangerous for existing in the fandom. And also their attacks are okay because they are PoC/queers/women and as members of these groups their behaviour can't be racist, queerphobic or misogynist by deafault…
You also misunderstand my actions towards those people. I’m not engaging in “discourse” with them. This is not academia, I’m not an academic. I’m pushing back against their behaviour. I’m expressing my distaste towards the groupthink. I’m not pretending to be respectable because I don’t think their behaviour deserves respect.
This is the crux of our disagreement, anon, our values don’t align.
