* After spending the last several years living a relatively low-key life in his native England Russell Brand is desperate to have a bigger presence in Hollywood but his wife Laura insists he stay put -- Russell’s craving SoCal living and the copious acting jobs and event invites that came with it but Laura prefers their British life outside the spotlight with their young daughters -- while some work has come to him in England like the upcoming Death on the Nile if he had his way he’d make a more aggressive career push in L.A.

Jane was already on the bus on her way to Nashville, Tennessee. Her head was resting against the cold window and her eyes were halfway closed. She was tired, cold and just to top them all, she was starting to get carsick. She wished that Sammy would’ve come with her, but his promises from the evening prior that they’d go on a hike maybe in British Columbia once she’d come back home encouraged her to pull through it.
As she sat in the nearly empty bus, Jane couldn’t take her mind off Sam. The way how he had always been there for her and the way she made her feel – both of these were constant thoughts in her head, urging her to get off the bus and return home, in his arms. She already missed the taste and feeling of his lips on hers and the warmness, comfort and safe feeling of his arms. She wanted to go home.
Meanwhile, from the comfort of his home, Sam was thinking of Jane. He was thinking of skipping two or three days in the studio to go visit her, but then he thought that he would come off as too clingy in front of Jane.
He walked around the house aimlessly. He drove Jane to the bus station early in the morning. Now it was only 8 am. He looked around the kitchen, wanting to eat something. The fact that outside was pretty gloomy didn’t help elevate his mood in any way. Sam felt like now that Jane was away, the sun went away, too. With a sigh he pulled a can of beer out of the fridge and popped it open. He looked at the can for a couple of moments before taking a sip and putting it away. His mind was blank, covered in a thick layer of dullness. He got unused to it with Jane around him all the time, but now that she was gone, it came back, and it came back stronger than before.
Jane fell asleep and woke up only multiple hours later, when the guy from the seat in front of her poked at her shoulder because they got to their destination. Jane was slightly startled, but she forced a smile while whispering a “thank you” to the stranger in the dark coat that woke her up. She looked out the bus window. The sun was hidden beneath the grey clouds that were announcing that rain was on its way. She also saw a man, not that tall, standing in the station, his hands shoved down his jean pockets. He had a patch sewed to his jacket, but Jane couldn’t really make out any other words other than “club”, so she guessed that that was the guy waiting for her.
In no time she was off the bus, her small sports bag thrown over her shoulder. She approached the man as she took in a deep breath. “Hi, are you uhh – mister Curtis?” she asked with a forced smile.
“Yes, that’s me, you must be Jane Morrison. Call me Adam though,” he answered and shook her hand. “May I help with your bag?”
Jane softly shook her head, politely denying his request. It was much chillier in Nashville that day than it was in Detroit the day before. She wished she were still with Sammy, her Sammy, the person who opened her eyes to the beauties of this world.
On the way to her rented apartment, Adam couldn’t shut up for sixty seconds, but Jane pulled through it and tried to be as polite as possible.
The room was actually quite nice. The mattress of the bed was a little too soft for Jane’s tastes, but in rest it was all right. She sat down on the wooden floor the suitcase that she had brought from Detroit and started unpacking as a mean to pass the time. It didn’t take her long to finish unpacking since she hadn’t brought too many things, so soon enough she found herself overwhelmed with boredom. She wasn’t in the mood to watch TV, nor to read anything. She wasn’t sleepy either.
Then, she had an idea – what about going for a walk around the shopping center? There was enough time until that night’s gig started and she could use a little walk. Maybe she would get something for Sam from there. She instantly started making a list in her head of all the records that Sam had ever mentioned that he’d want to get and she smiled to herself.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes, Jane hung her camera around the neck and was out the door, strolling on the sidewalk.
“Hello ma’am, excuse me, where is the closest shopping center?” she asked politely a woman who was probably five years or so older than her. Jane really liked the way she dressed – with skin tight leather pants, knee-high boots and a leopard print shirt, with lots of jewelry around her neck and on her hands.
“Sure, darling. You cross this street and you keep going straight, until you reach the next street corner. There, you turn right and keep straight until you see it,” she answered with a smile on her lips.
The red light turned green and she crossed the street, along with the other people waiting to do so. There she parted ways with the woman who helped her; Jane kept going ahead, while the woman turned left. Jane kept the instructions in mind and strolled down, looking up to the sky from time to time. It looked like the sky was cornered from every direction by the skyscrapers that shadowed the streets.
A bling sound from her phone made her snap out of her thoughts and she slowed down her pace as she pulled out the phone.
Hi honey, hope you are having fun in Nash! Wish I were there with you :( I just left practice and I’m going for a drink with Danny and maybe some thrifting, too. Feel free to call me whenever you want! Kisses! Sam x
A smile bloomed on her lips and her heart fluttered as she re-read the text again. Sam called her “honey”; Jane didn’t know that he could get even sweeter than he already was, but yet there he was. She pushed the phone back in her pocket as she made a mental note to call Sam as soon as she gets where she set to go.
When she reached the next street corner, she remembered that she had to go right from there. She stopped at the red light and crossed her arms over her chest, softly tapping her fingers to her arm following a rhythm in her mind. When the light turned green, she started crossing the street. She always looked both left and right before crossing a street, just to make sure, but only this one time, she forgot to do so.
She was about midway on the crosswalk when the thought that she forgot to check the street crossed her mind. She violently turned her head right, and saw a car approaching fast, with no chances to stop before it reached her, but still too fast for her to back up to safety.
She felt as if time stopped as well as the things around her. In those moments she remembered all of her happy and sad memories from her life.
In no time she was back in the day she first stepped inside the new place she’d call home in Frankenmuth. She remembered seeing three boys and a girl peeking at her and her parents as they moved in all their belongings. She remembered seeing Sam for the first time, his first words to her being “Hey, wanna listen to some music with me?”. She then remembered her graduation from Frankenmuth High and that one time she went with the Kiszkas camping in Michigan’s wilderness.
She remembered meeting her ex-fiancé at a concert and their first kiss, then their breakup and all the heartbreak. Then she remembered Sam coming in the fitting room and staying with her while she bawled her eyes out and then she remembered the moment when she realized that Sam was the person she was actually in love with. She remembered their first kiss and the way her heart raced every time since then and the way his lips felt on hers and on her skin. She remembered everything.
“Sam, I...” was all she could whisper before the sense of reality came back to her and time started flowing again.

Sam looked down at his phone, nervously turning the screen on and off and wondering why didn’t Jane call or text him by then. It was getting late and he was starting to have a bad feeling forming in his stomach. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shrug it off.
He jumped on the couch as he turned on the TV and scrolled through his list of contacts until he reached Jane. He touched her name and her profile showed up. As a contact photo, he chose one that they had made together in last year’s summer, while on a trip in Washington State. She had a radiant smile on her face in that picture as she kept with one finger a strand of Sam’s hair over her top lip, like it was a mustache.
Sam smiled at the memory and pressed the call button. As he waited for an answer, his heart deepened in his chest.
A terrible accident took place earlier today in Nashville, Tennessee, mid-day on one of the main streets, downtown. A woman got hit by a car, driven by a drunk man. Thankfully, the ambulance got there quick enough to assure that the woman won’t lose her life, even though she is gravely injured.
Sam looked at the TV screen as in front of his eyes flashed images of a wide street and a car crashed a few meters after the crosswalk. Then the news channel played a video submitted by a vigilante showing doctors rushing to a woman lying on the street.
Sam let his phone fall from his hand on the couch as the video zoomed in on the chaotic movements of the doctors, rushing the woman to the ambulance. The face wasn’t seen, but Sam spotted it – Jane’s camera; the one she never left behind. To confirm Sam’s biggest fear, he also saw one of the patches that they had sown together to the synthetic camera strap.
Sam’s heart started pounding against his chest, making an unbearable noise, almost driving him crazy. “No, no, no,” he kept whispering to himself as he stood up from the couch absentmindedly and started pacing around the room in circled, running his hands through his hair.
He eventually reached the stairs leading to the upper floor where he had his bedroom, an extra bathroom and a balcony. He let himself fall on the bottom stair and grabbed ahold of his head in his hands. “Fuck…”
Tears started threatening to roll down his cheeks as soon as he let his head fall back. Bringing his knees to his chest and holding them there, a first tear fell, wetting in one spot his white t-shirt. The affectionless and dull voice of the TV reporter, the loud heartbeats, the clock ticking nonstop on the wall – it all drained out. It was silent, as if the universe wanted to let him remember, think, pull himself together and do something.

Disagree on Salem Ohio.  Shoulda gone Indiana. Why would you choose Salem, anyway? Given that this has nothing to do with witchy anything? Wait, does it?  [Post-show pseudo-addendum: Nope.]
Shocker. Like, THE Shocker, or... 😳  *ahem*
What is the fixation with giving characters the same/similar names? 
[Post-show pseudo-addendum: I get the shtick for the purposes of this episode, not entirely the point, keep reading] 
And I'm also not talking about super-duper-common names (Jane, Mary, etc.), I get how those would naturally come up over the course of 13/14 years. I mean they’re fixated on the same names for women that have more than a just-passing-through role. 
This chick is Sam, short for Samantha. So why not just call her Samantha? Especially given the tone of their conversation, we don’t typically revert to nicknames when we’re pissed, we typically dial it up to full first names (and for parents, to full first-and-middle). Nope, gotta be "Sam". And he said it three times. Three times in a conversation that maybe lasted a minute, to make sure we got it.

Doesn't matter, I don't know why I'm even going down this road, I don't trust this writer's room in the least to have a carefully crafted plan that they've shared with Jensen. Well, it's beyond trust - Jensen all but said it in that interview (go find it yourselves, I'm sleepy, and this sammich ain't gonna eat itself, but I love you)

I searched for names that the nickname “Millie” could evolve from that I thought would sound appropriate with this somewhat upper-crust lifestyle, so I made her real name be Emeline (Em-ah-lynn for me, though I’ve heard the last part with a long “i”, too) which is a sweet and classy oldie-goldie jam I wish would come back. It’s Brit-y for her mom, allows for her dad to be the only one who calls her Millie til Henry comes along. Her brothers call her “Em”, which annoys her mom. My psychiatrist’s front office girl has this name (except double-M) but insists on going by “Em”. Not “Emma”, not “Emme”. Em. (As in Auntie Em, I just had a fever dream about little people who give out candy, and grown men dressed in costumes who like skipping down roads with young girls, and trees that throw apples, and flying monkeys, which are cool, but still.) I have found her to be idiotic in several respects over the years, and this decision was not a point in her favor. There, I’m done.

I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish for a moment there, not even five seconds, when ol' boy was standing above him, we saw some Mikey flash across Dean's face with a touch - and I mean a *touch*, CG department, don't blow your whole wad per usual - of blue. That nobody sees, only the audience and the monster, have monster kinda pause, maybe look confused and hit his little button but this time it comes out with the tiniest lilt of a questioning upspeak on the last syllable, and nothing ultimately happens since Sam arrives, Dean shakes his drowsiness off, then proceed to choke hold, etc. It would fall in line with whatever route they're going (Mikey actively impersonating Dean/Mikey residuals left in Dean/Mikey passively hiding out in Dean), also be a nice audience tease.

As the rush to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band confirmed, the Beatles are now Art. Jack Kroll, Newsweek’s analyst of Now Culture, proclaimed “A Day in the Life” to be “the Beatles’ ‘Waste Land.’” In the New Statesman, composer-critic-musicologist Wilfred Metiers devoted an entire column to an exegesis of the themes of loneliness that make the album “art of an increasingly subtle kind.”
The Beatles, moreover, are Functional Art. Said the Times Educational Supplement (of London): “Lennon and McCartney’s lyrics represent an important barometer to our society—sentiments which are shared by pupils in every classroom in Britain ... If the record’s understanding were to be reflected in Britain’s teachers, our schools might be more sympathetic institutions than some are now.” In echo, a school superintendent this past July told a conference of music educators in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, how to start their journey across that alarmingly widening generational gap: “If you want to know what youths are thinking and feeling, you cannot find anyone who speaks for them or to them more clearly than the Beatles.” Said Beatles even speak for and to the dead. And yet three years ago, Paul McCartney insisted, “We have no message and aren’t trying to deliver one.” What is the message now? On one level, it’s not quite clear, even within the company of the four gurus. Tim Leary announces: “The Beatles have taken my place. That latest album—a complete celebration of LSD.” And Paul McCartney, who has indeed taken LSD, says: “After I took it, it opened my eyes. We only use one tenth of our brain. Just think what all we could accomplish if we could only tap that hidden part! It would mean a whole new world. If the politicians would take LSD, there wouldn’t be any more war, or poverty.”
But George Harrison, once a trip-taker, tells the Los Angeles Free Press: “Acid is not the answer, definitely not the answer. It’s enabled people to see a little bit more, but when you really get hip you don’t need it.” And John Lennon, who has also journeyed somewhere into himself through acid, laughs when told that hippies, actual and acolyte, take the initials of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” as a hortatory message. “No,” he says, “my son, Julian, brought a painting home from school and said it was a picture of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” So what is the message? Look up in the sky—and live.
On another level, however, the message is clear and Beatles-consensual enough. Writing of the Sgt. Pepper implosion, Paul Williams, editor of Crawdaddy, the higher critic of the new sounds and feelings, asserts: “If there’s a message, it’s ‘Dig Yourself.’ ” With a little help from your friends. It’s getting better all the time, and it doesn’t really matter if you’re wrong or right.
But that’s not all. There is also death. The Beatles are, up to a point, hip to death, more so than any other popular music group has ever been. Eleanor Rigby is dead long before the obsequies. And death grins in “A Day in the Life” of the man who blew his mind out in a car. In the same song, the deaths of miners in Lancaster become “four thousand holes ... and though the holes were rather small they had to count them all.”
The man in the car is bloody well dead, the crowd of people who stood and stared has turned away, the miners are in holes, but “though the news was rather sad / Well I just had to laugh. I saw the photograph.” Thus the auto-anesthesia of us all, who will not see pain, who will not believe in death, and who are disappointed when the news is not of pain and death. But could the song also show the Beatles’ own auto-anesthesia? Having seen pain and having thought of death, do they turn to save themselves—and their friends—through magic?
Magic? Wilfred Mellers finds one common bond in the music of Boulez, Cage, Bob Dylan and the Beatles—“an attempt to return to magic, possibly as a substitute for belief.” In an interview with Miles in the International Times, Paul McCartney says: “With any kind of thing, my aim seems to be to distort it, distort it from what we know it as, even with music and visual things and to change it from what it is to see what it could be. To see the potential in it all. To take a note and wreck it and see in that note what else there is in it, that a simple act like distorting it has caused. To take a film and to superimpose on top of it so you can’t quite tell what it is anymore, it’s all trying to create magic, it’s all trying to make things happen so that you don’t know why they’ve happened.” 
And George Harrison, anxious for serenity, talks about being only 24 “in this incarnation,” and goes on: “We’re Beatles, and it’s a little scene and we’re playing and we’re pretending to be Beatles, like Harold Wilson’s pretending to be Prime Minister . . . They’re all playing. The Queen is the Queen. The idea that you could wake up and it happens that you’re Queen, it’s amazing but you could all be Queens if you imagine it. . . they’ll have a war quickly if it gets too good, they’ll just pick on the nearest person to save us from our doom. That’s it, soon as you freak out and have a good time, it’s dangerous, but they don’t think of the danger of going into some other country in a tank with a machine-gun and shooting someone. That’s all legal and aboveboard, but you can’t freak out—that’s stupid.”
Magic is dangerous to the world, but the world is more dangerous to the Beatles—and to their friends. And so, there is the leap into the magic of the loving community. We all live in our yellow submarine and our friends are all on board. With our love—we could save the world—if they only knew. [But since they don’t know] “Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream. It is not dying, it is not dying.” In this, the Beatles and the hippies are together in a search for peace.
And so the Beatles no longer speak to the very young who do not yet know how dangerous the world is, how efficiently numbing, how full of little boxes for them. The very young have turned to the plastic Monkees; but the older teens and many in their twenties and beyond are listening. On the other hand, the Revolver disc was dismissed by a class in a large industrially-centered English school with the words: “Aw no, sir, we don’t like that: it’s all Chinky.”
Beatles records are not on the jukeboxes in the black ghettos nor, I expect, are they the food of magic for those in the lower tracks of any of our schools. Those young abandoned magic with Santa Claus. The Beatles are increasingly for the comfortable and afraid—afraid to be lonely, afraid to be Eleanor Rigby. It is true, as Frank Kofsky writes in the National Guardian, “There are millions of devout followers of Dylan, the Stones, the Beatles, and all the rest, who are in opposition to the society that spawned them and are, in the words of a Jefferson Airplane song, ‘trying to revolutionize tomorrow.’ In hippie communities like San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury, they strive to realize the new socialist man (my label, not theirs) who will be capable of fulfilling to the limit the creative potential of the human race, especially in the arts.”
But, even with a little help from their friends, will these revolutionizers of tomorrow-through love, through consciousness-expansion, through digging themselves on their yellow submarine-change what’s happening out there? Even if you could spike LBJ’s root beer with LSD, what then?
However, as for expanding creative potential among those in the beloved community, the Beatles are indeed among the liberators. They started nibbling at Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. (In that incarnation, George Harrison also picked up on Chet Atkins and Duane Eddy.) They were less black-inflected than the Animals and the Rolling Stones; but along with them and other young British rockers brushed by the blues, the Beatles turned millions of American adolescents onto what had been here all the hurting time. But the young here never did want it raw so they absorbed it through the British filter. Oh yes, some later found Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and now they’re into their own kind of greyboating with Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield and Big Brother and the Holding Company, but that’s a trip, as it has to be, with a return ticket. I mean, Shankar is beloved, but if he put an evening raga on you at high noon, would you know?
Anyway, the Beatles went on—into and through Buddy Holly, the Nashville communion, Bob Dylan, the Who, the Beach Boys. They were getting to where, as Paul McCartney put it, they could be influenced by themselves. And in their wake they left behind the fake imperatives of the 32-bar tune, “consonant” changes, steady tempos. Harmonies shifted vertiginously, their early modalities grew strange branches, voicings continually surprised themselves, and uncommonly ecumenical textures appeared —the sitar in “Norwegian Wood,” guitar tracks running backwards on “I’m Only Sleeping,” sitar and electronic sounds in “Love You Too,” more electronics in “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Writing of the latter, Mellers discovered “a new sonorous experience in amalgamating avant-garde jazz (Mingus-like jungle noises, Cage-like electronics, folk penta-tonicism, Indian sitars).” And in the Mellotron overlay in “Penny Lane,” he wondered if Lennon and McCartney had been digging Charles Ives.
Sgt. Pepper has further disintegrated paper categories and boundaries to get to where the Beatles could hear where they belong at the moment. Their first album had been recorded in one day. This one, with four to six sessions a week, evolved through more than three months, and is the most heterogeneous, heady mix of possibilities in pop music history. Combs and paper over a string octet and harp on “Lovely Rita”; multiple tracks of percussion and strings into which sitar, tamboura and swor-mandel are imbedded, swirling between 4/4 and 5/4 on “Within You Without You.” Three tambouras, a dilruba, a tabla, an Indian table-harp, a sitar (Harrison), three cellos, and eight violins on “She’s Leaving Home”; Lennon on Hammond organ, recorded at different speeds and then overlaid with electronic echoes, while four harmonicas disport in Being for the “Benefit of Mr. Kite.” And on and on to the 41-piece orchestra in “A Day in the Life” with, as Jack Kroll exults, “a growling, bone-grinding crescendo that drones up like a giant crippled turbine struggling to spin new power into a foundered civilization.”
Where now? The next move, says Paul McCartney, “seems to be things like electronics because it’s a complete new field and there’s a lot of good new sounds to be listened to in it. But if the music itself is just going to jump about five miles ahead, then everyone’s going to be left standing with this gap of five miles that they’ve got to all cross before they can even see what scene these people are on ... That’s what I’d like to do. I’d like to look into that gap a bit.” 
As George Harrison says, “You see, we haven’t really started yet, the Beatles. The future stretches out beyond our imagination.” The Beatles are absolutely fre-e-e. “The competition among the best—Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, among them—is no longer for money,” observes pop chronicler Al Aronowitz in the Saturday Evening Post. “They already have enough of that. The competition is in music . . . The best artists in the business—the aristocracy—are moving into positions of power. They’re making fewer and fewer compromises with commercialism. There’s hardly anything interesting happening outside this exclusive circle.”
Meanwhile Rap Brown tries to find the revolution and the strategists of the New Politics scour the new class for their constituency. But to the Beatles, are they for real? Why be up-tight about anything? “At the back of my brain somewhere,” Paul McCartney says, “there is something telling me now that ... it tells me in a cliche too, it tells me that everything is beautiful.” And so it may be. Who can put down magic that works for the magician?
Must everything be related constantly to the non-psychedelic world? I keep thinking about the Beatles as “an important barometer to our society,” and I remember Donald Michael predicting in The Next Generation that the control centers “will be able to tolerate groups living at different paces and styles, if they show no deliberate intent to alter significantly the drive or direction of the prevailing social processes . . . Isolated and insulated from major and majority preoccupations of the society, and thereby offering no threat to the status quo, these enclaves will provide opportunities for more whimsical, personally paced styles of life.”

Billy Ocean (born Leslie Sebastian Charles; 21 January 1950) is a Trinidadian-born English recording artist who had a string of R&B international pop hits in the 1970s and 1980s. He was the most popular British R&B singer-songwriter of the early to mid-1980s. After scoring his first four UK Top 20 successes, seven years passed before he accumulated a series of transatlantic successes, including three U.S. number ones. In 1985, Ocean won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his worldwide hit, "Caribbean Queen", and in 1987 was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist.
In 2002, the University of Westminster, London, awarded Ocean an honorary doctorate of music. In 2010, Ocean was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards. On 29 July 2011, Ocean became a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, presented to him by Paul McCartney. He is a member of the Rastafari movement.
Biography
Early life and stardom
Ocean was born as Leslie Sebastian Charles in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago, to Hainsley Charles, a Grenadian musician and his wife Violet. He moved to Romford, Essex, England, with his family at the age of ten. He was exposed to music at an early age from his musician father, and, growing up, Ocean realized he was in line to follow his father's ambitions. During his teenage years, he sang regularly in London clubs while also working as a tailor in London's Savile Row. He was discovered by his first manager, John Morphew, who recorded a double A side single at Pye Studios in London with a full orchestra, However, the ballad singing style of Les was going out of fashion and Morphew was unable to get any major label to release it. It remains unreleased. Les's father, who countersigned the management contract as Les was younger than 18 asked Morphew to release him from contract, which he did without penalty. In 1969 he joined a local band "The Shades of Midnight" playing in the Shoreditch area of London. He recorded his first single, "Nashville Rain" backed with "Sun In The Morning", in 1971 for Spark Records as Les Charles and for two years fronted a studio band called Scorched Earth, with whom he released "On The Run" backed with "Let's Put Our Emotions in Motion" in 1974.
Following his time with Scorched Earth, a routine doctor's appointment discovered an extra pulmonary node central to his (Billy's) albeit medically normal lungs. The examination carried out by Dr Clare Greenwood (The O'Malley Clinic, Beverly Hills). This extra lung has been attributed with the longevity of Billy's singing career.
Ocean took his stage name from the Ocean Estate, Stepney in London's East End, where he was living at the time. In 1976, he recorded his first album, Billy Ocean, with its first single release, "Love Really Hurts Without You", charting at No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 22 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He enjoyed club success from the songs "Are You Ready" and "Stay The Night" from the album City Limit – both of which were later covered by La Toya Jackson. More successes ensued, including "L.O.D. (Love on Delivery)". He also wrote and composed songs for other artists. In 1981, he scored the US R&B chart with "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)."
The prime of his international success
Ocean's period of greatest success began with the releases, during 1984, of the album Suddenly and its main single, "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)". The song's title and lyrics were changed for different regions, such that the song is also known as "African Queen" or "European Queen". The song won Ocean the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards. The album's title track also became a success, peaking at No. 4 in both the U.S. and the UK and the song "Loverboy", while also being a No. 2 U.S. success in 1985 was also featured in the first scene of the popular UK BBC One TV series Casualty, in 1986.
Ocean appeared at Live Aid in 1985, singing "Caribbean Queen" and "Loverboy", from JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
His 1986 album Love Zone also sold well. It included the successful singles "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going", the theme from the film The Jewel of the Nile; this was a No. 1 success in the UK and a No. 2 in the United States; and "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" (a U.S. No. 1, and also a major UK success). Also included were the title track and "Love Is Forever", which were No. 10 and No. 16 U.S. successes for Ocean, respectively.
In February 1986, Ocean's video of "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" was banned by the BBC, owing to such non-union members as the American actors Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, all three of whom were cast members of Romancing The Stone and The Jewel of the Nile, miming to the backing vocals. At the 1987 BRIT Awards, Ocean was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male.
Ocean's next album, Tear Down These Walls (1988), featured another No. 1 single, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car", while the album was certified platinum.
Later career
His 1993 album Time to Move On failed to produce any major successes, but his 1989 Greatest Hits collection has been a steady seller over the years, and his 1997 compilation Love Is For Ever made No. 7 on the UK album chart. Ocean's last studio album for Jive Records was Time to Move On, which he recorded in Chicago with R&B star R. Kelly. R. Kelly had been a longtime admirer of the way Ocean was able to mix the more emotive soul style with a crossover popular style.
In 2002, the University of Westminster in London awarded Ocean an honorary doctorate of music. The awards ceremony took place in the Barbican Centre, in London. He continues to tour and record in Europe. Ocean is now a patron for Tech Music Schools in London, made up of Drumtech, Vocaltech, Guitar-X and Keyboardtech. He regularly visits to hold clinics and seminars for the students.
In 2004, "Caribbean Queen" was re-released as a digital single for its 20th anniversary, shooting up to No. 25 on the Billboard digital singles chart and garnering radio play across the United States and UK. A remix of the single by will.i.am was released in 2005.
In October 2007, Ocean commenced his first UK tour in more than 15 years. In February and March 2008 he toured Australia and the Far East. His album Because I Love You was released on 2 February 2009. To coincide with this tour and album launch, Ocean worked with Adoseof Design on a revision of Ocean's website.
In April 2010, an 18-track compilation album was released in the UK by Sony Music titled The Very Best of Billy Ocean to tie in with a 30-date tour of the UK and Ireland. Featuring Ocean's biggest hits, the album debuted in the UK Albums Chart at No. 17.
On 20 October 2010, Ocean was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards.
On 29 July 2011, Ocean became a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. His title was presented by former Beatle Paul McCartney.
In 2012, Ocean made a cameo appearance in the British comedy movie Keith Lemon: The Film as Lemon's father.
In January 2016, Ocean appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to perform some of his classic hits as part of a promo tour for his new album.
Ocean has announced a Spring Tour 2017 in the UK during March and April 2017.

Personal life
Ocean lives in Sunningdale, Berkshire with his wife Judy, which he has done so since 1978. They have three children: Cherie, Anthony and Rachel. Anthony played rugby sevens at the 2014 Commonwealth Games for Barbados.

Longtime resident Mary Hulitar, known for her unassuming generosity, died at her home. She was 90.

Mrs. Hulitar was a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y. She served on the boards of Hospice of Palm Beach County, whose Charles W. Gerstenberg Hospice Center in West Palm Beach is named for her father; the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kalaheo, Hawaii; and The Society of the Four Arts. She joined the Garden Club of Palm Beach in 1978 and was an active member for the remainder of her life.
Her honors include the Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews’ John C. Randolph Award, the Hospice Foundation Hero Award and Town of Palm Beach Centennial Ambassador.
Mrs. Hulitar spent many hours volunteering for the Four Arts’ library.

Myra Mann Morrison
Resident Myra Mann Morrison, who enjoyed careers in nursing and real estate, died at age 85.

A native of Victoria, Australia, Mrs. Morrison completed her nursing training in Melbourne, Australia, in 1953 before
traveling to the United States to visit family in Palm Beach.
She lived in Atlanta, where she worked as a registered nurse. In 1967, she married the late Earl Mann, then owner of the Atlanta Crackers baseball team. They moved to Palm Beach in 1970. Mrs. Morrison worked as a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Medical Center. In the 1970s, she became certified in real estate and was a longtime Realtor with Brown Harris Stevens.
In 2008, she married John Morrison, a career officer in the U.S. Army whom she met at Royal Poinciana Chapel. He also was a licensed real estate broker.

Dennis Wayne
Dancer and choreographer Dennis Wayne, dubbed the Bad Lad of Ballet for his good looks and rebellious attitude, died of respiratory failure at 72 in West Palm Beach.

Born Dennis Wayne Wendelken in St. Petersburg, his career in ballet began in the 1960s with Harkness Ballet. He then became a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theater. He was a frequent visitor to Palm Beach and spent his later years in West Palm Beach.
He was still under contract to American Ballet Theater when he formed his own company, DANCERS, in 1975 and recruited six American Ballet Theater dancers to perform in it, The New York Times said. American Ballet Theater ordered him to disband his company or leave. He acquiesced for a year, then revived his company with financial backing from actress Joanne Woodward. DANCERS debuted in December 1976 at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse.
After suffering serious injuries in a car accident in 1980, he took up choreography and even returned to the stage in 1985 when he and his company performed at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse for the Palm Beach Festival. Wayne danced several times in the 1990s at the Flagler Museum with small freelance troupes he organized. In 1996, he choreographed a fashion show benefit for the Palm Beach Zoo. He created dances for the 2005 Palm Beach Follies fundraiser at The Society of the Four Arts, which raised money for the hurricane-ravaged Four Arts’ gardens.

Jane Dudley, a longtime winter resident and a stalwart of the island’s society and fashion sets, died at her home in West Nashville. She was 92.

She was the widow of Guilford Dudley Jr., a former U.S. ambassador to Denmark and longtime chairman of The Coconuts. At the time of his death in 2002, they had been married for 52 years.
A native of Nashville, she was the daughter of William and Nancy (Joseph) Anderson. Her father was the coach of Vanderbilt University’s track team. She was a graduate of the Parmer School; Ward Belmont Ladies Seminary and Vanderbilt University.
After college, she worked for the Nashville Tennessean newspaper. Later, she managed corporate accounts for Tiffany & Co. for more than two decades. After marrying, she traveled the world as an ambassador’s wife, acquiring the skills that would later make an invitation from her among the most coveted in Palm Beach, Nashville and New York.
Mrs. Dudley was active in charitable and cultural causes.

John Bowden Dodge
Longtime resident, businessman and sportsman John Bowden Dodge died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 86.

A native of Boston, he was the son of Frank Schuyler Dodge and Mary (nee Bowden) Dodge. After serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he graduated from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Management in 1957.
His love of the hospitality industry began when he worked at his family’s historic hotel, The Mountain View House in Whitefield. His career included management stints at American Airlines’ Sky Chef division and the Casa Blanca, both in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Charlie Farrell’s Racquet Club in Palm Springs; and the Townhouse in Rochester, N.Y. Later, he became a developer of golf course communities in the Virgin Islands, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida. His favorite project was Harbour Ridge, which he chose for its proximity to the St. Lucie River’s scenic North Fork.
An accomplished athlete, he was a diver and loved spending time on his boat, the Lorelei; he also was an avid skier, tennis player and hiker, especially in the White Mountains’ Presidential Range. He considered his greatest athletic accomplishment to be his ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1986 at the age of 55.
Mr. Dodge was widely active in civic, charitable and cultural causes.

Parker Ladd
Parker B. Ladd, a part-time resident, publishing executive and philanthropist, died at his home in New York.

Mr. Ladd was a graduate of the University of Vermont. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked as a book seller in Sweden before eventually landing in New York. Mr. Ladd enjoyed a successful career at Charles Scribner’s Sons and was a director at the Association of American Publishers.
Following his retirement, Mr. Ladd served as a television producer for the A&E program, Open Book, an interview talk show featuring authors and their work. In Palm Beach, he developed an interview format breakfast series at The Brazilian Court called the Book and Author Breakfast.
Mr. Ladd, along with his husband — international fashion designer Arnold Scaasi — and their friend and journalist Liz Smith, was a founder of the nonprofit organization Literacy Partners Inc.

Betty Marcus of Jupiter, formerly of Palm Beach, died at 94.

Mrs. Marcus was born in 1923, the year that her father, Leo Gerstenzang, invented the Q-tip. She grew up in New York City and spent one year at Northwestern University before marrying Robert (Bob) Marcus, in 1943. She finished her education at Parsons School of Design and became an interior decorator.
Residents of Scarsdale, N.Y., she and her husband bought a second home in Palm Beach in the 1970s that eventually became their full-time residence. Her husband, who died in 2001, was president of Q-tips from 1947 to 1959 and later president and owner of S&K Sales Corp.
Mrs. Marcus and her husband were members of the Palm Beach Country Club.

North Palm Beach resident Irma Lee Anapol, an award-winning angler who was active in charitable causes in Palm Beach, died at 83.

A native of New Bedford, Mass., she was married to Joel Anapol of Fall River, Mass., for 51 years. Mrs. Anapol was a member of the Chub Cay Club in the Bahamas and the Nantucket Anglers Club.
Among her charity works, the three-time breast cancer survivor committed herself to counseling other cancer patients. She partnered with Estee Lauder to provide cancer patients with cosmetics and guidance on fashionable ways to wear makeup, wigs and hats during treatment.
She also was active in “Our Kids Sake,” a national educational program against pesticides in food. A founding member and major supporter of the YWCA’s Harmony House, she received the group’s Grace Hoadley Dodge Award in 2013. She also supported the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation, Wheelchairs for Kids and The Angels of Charity.

Longtime resident Alec Engelstein, a real estate developer and philanthropist, died at 87.

Born in Romania, he survived the Holocaust and in 1948, with the help of the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, moved to Montreal, where he met his future wife, Sheila. In 1968, the family moved to Florida, where Mr. Engelstein became a real estate developer. His Engel Homes became one of the largest home builders in the United States.
For more than 40 years, Mr. Engelstein was pivotal in expanding Jewish life in Palm Beach County with support of organizations including the Friedman Commission for Jewish Education, MorseLife Health System and Temple Emanu-El.
During his four-year tenure as its board chairman, the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County established Partnership2Gether, providing a lifesaving link between the Palm Beaches and Israel’s TZAHAR region. He was a member of the Prime Ministers Council, the most generous donors to the federation’s annual campaign.

Frederic Alan Sharf of Palm Beach, a businessman, philanthropist, scholar and avid collector of forgotten treasures, died in West Palm Beach after a long illness. He was 83.

Mr. Sharf, a Boston native, turned down a job teaching history at Harvard University to go into the family business, channeling his love of history into collecting. He sought things that were overlooked by other collectors, including Spanish-American War illustrations, architectural drawings, automotive design drawings, Japanese Meiji period woodblock prints, fashion illustrations, 1940s British women’s wear and, most recently, cartoons. Through his scholarship and initiative, he elevated his collectibles into museum-worthy objects. He curated exhibitions from his collections, wrote or edited more than 40 books and donated collections to museums.
He was a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Essex Institute, and The Wolfsonian-FIU in Miami Beach, as well as Beth Israel Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In 2016, Mr. Sharf and his wife, Jean, donated $1 million to MorseLife in West Palm Beach for the senior care facility’s welcome center.
Mr. Sharf built the family business, M. Sharf & Co., into a sports marketing and management company offering services to professional ice hockey and tennis athletes.

Irving Luntz
Longtime Worth Avenue art dealer Irving Luntz, regarded by many as the Avenue’s canniest and most colorful businessman, died at 88 at his island home.

A native of Milwaukee, Mr. Luntz opened Irving Galleries in 1974 in Palm Beach, focusing on top-quality modern master and contemporary art. He retired in 2011, when he turned over 332 Worth Ave. to his son, photography dealer Holden Luntz.
As a young man, Mr. Luntz played clarinet and saxophone in jazz bands. After he married, he worked for his father-in-law’s business leasing heavy equipment for commercial developments in Milwaukee.
When he and his wife divorced in the early 1960s, Mr. Luntz went into the art business. He taught himself the trade. He opened his first gallery in 1959 in Milwaukee.
Dec. 5
Leandro Rizzuto of Palm Beach, the co-founder and board chairman of Conair Corp., died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
With his parents, Mr. Rizzuto founded the company in 1959. Forbes reported that Mr. Rizzuto, who was worth $3.4 billion, left St. John’s University to help set up Conair in the basement of the family’s home in Brooklyn. He was tied for No. 212 on the 2017 Forbes 400 list, and No. 367 on Forbes’ list of world billionaires.
Mr. Rizzuto owned a $2.3 million condominium in Winthrop House, according to county records. He also owned a single-family home in Highland Beach and condominiums in Sheridan, Wyo.

Bruce Halle
Discount Tire chairman Bruce Halle, a seasonal resident who grew the retail chain he founded into a business empire, died in his sleep at age 87.

Mr. Halle, who served in the Korean War as a Marine, opened his first Discount Tire store in 1960 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Today, the company is the world’s largest tire and wheel retailer and is expected to have more than 1,000 stores this year in 34 states. In October, Forbes.com’s annual Forbes 400 list estimated his net worth at $4.6 billion and ranked him in 144th place. Mr. Halle and his wife Diane shared a house on North Ocean Boulevard they had bought in 2012.
The Halles were active in civic and charitable causes as well as the arts. The Bruce T. Halle Library on his alma mater campus at Eastern Michigan University is named after him. Mr. Halle and wife established The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation to fund a range of charitable endeavors. He also created programs to help his employees in need, including the Bruce T. Halle Assistance Fund and a scholarship program for employees’ college-bound children.
In town over the past two seasons, the Halles attended charitable functions that included events supporting the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Navy SEALs and The Lord’s Place. The Halles also were significant art collectors, with a collection that concentrated on Latin American art and contemporary sculpture.

Norbert Goldner, chef and owner Café L’Europe, one of the island’s most beloved restaurants, died at age 77.
Mr. Goldner was born in Berlin and managed the New York City restaurant The Sign of the Dove before opening the first Cafe L’Europe in Sarasota in 1972.

In 1980, Cafe L’Europe opened in Palm Beach, where, in the weeks that followed, it was so popular that there often was a line out the door before dinner hours. Cafe L’Europe became an island staple, and Mr. Goldner became known as an outstanding chef.
Customers remember Mr. Goldner for his warm personality, his love of walking around the restaurant and talking to customers, and his meticulous attention to detail in operation of the restaurant.

William P. Rayner
Water-colorist and travel writer William P. Rayner died in New York City at age 88.

Mr. Rayner was born in Washington, D.C. He was educated at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He was introduced to art at an early age. His mother, Emily Rayner, was a director of the Worth Avenue Gallery, a Palm Beach fixture from the 1940s to the 1960s.
His aunt was the celebrated New York art dealer Betty Parsons, with whom he spent many summers on Long Island. Through her, he met artists such as Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock.
Rayner was the editorial business manager for Conde Nast for 30 years. His job provided him with a passport to exotic locales and vehicles for publishing the writing and paintings inspired by his many trips with his wife, Kathy, the daughter of Anne Cox Chambers of Cox Enterprises, the former parent company of the Palm Beach Daily News.

Vic Damone, longtime resident whom Frank Sinatra once described as “having the best pipes in the business,” died from respiratory failure at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. He was 89.

Born Vito Farinola in Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood, he was the son of Italian immigrants from the Adriatic seaside city of Bari. His father, Rocco Farinola, was an electrician; his mother, Mamie Damone Farinola, was a homemaker and piano teacher. Mr. Damone was a 14-year-old dropout working as an usher at New York’s legendary Paramount Theater when he found himself in an elevator with the evening’s headliner, Perry Como. He told Como he was taking voice lessons and began singing, then asked Como if he should continue his voice lessons. Como — who would also, later in life, become a Palm Beach County resident — said “Keep singing!”
He served in the Army from 1951-53. After his military service, he took his mother’s maiden name professionally and carved out a career that encompassed film, television, concerts and more than 2,500 recordings. He received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. He moved to Palm Beach, where he met and married his fifth wife, Rena Rowan, and moved into a home on Via Bellaria and lived the life of a retiree.
He was active in many causes, including Palm Beach Island Cats, Vita Nova, the Renaissance Learning Center for Autism, St. Edward Church, and the Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook, founded by Old Port Cove resident Dick Robinson. Mr. Damone was the first recipient of the organization’s Legend Award.

French couturier Hubert de Givenchy, 91, who popularized the little black dress, died at his home outside Paris.

After working for the house of Piguet and Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli, he founded his own design house in 1952, which proved to be an instant success.

Marie D. Schwartz, of Greenwich, Conn., and formerly of Palm Beach, died at Greenwich Hospital. She was 97.
A native of Atlanta, she attended the University of Georgia. She held an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Long Island University College of Pharmacy.
She was a staff writer for The Washington Post from 1954 to 1970, covering the White House. She served as president of the American Newspaper Women’s Club. She also wrote a number of books, including Entertaining in the White House, The President’s Lady: An Intimate Biography of Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson and White House Brides.
In 1970, she married New York City oil company executive Arnold Schwartz, and left Washington and the newspaper world behind. The couple served as benefactors for the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Kidney Dialysis Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. She was a board member of St. Mary’s and the Norton.

John Weller Hanley, a former Palm Beacher, died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was 96. Mr. Hanley was a resident of Winston-Salem and Roaring Gap, N.C.

Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, he was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering and the Harvard University’s School of Business with an MBA. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy serving primarily in the Pacific Theater.
After the war, Mr. Hanley graduated from the Harvard Business School and began a career with Procter & Gamble. After serving as executive vice president of P&G, he was served as president, and CEO of the Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri. He served there from 1972 to 1983 before retiring from business to concentrate on his private passion preventing and treating substance use disorder. Recognizing his contributions on the national scene, he was awarded honorary law degrees from the University of Missouri, Maryville College, Notre Dame University, University of the Pacific, Washington University in St. Louis, and Webster College.
The post-retirement activity that occupied much of his time was built around his family’s interest in helping people suffering from alcoholism and drug dependency. In Palm Beach County, he and his wife co-founded the Hanley Center in West Palm Beach and Gate Lodge in Vero Beach as well as the research laboratory at Penn State.

Rhoda L. Kleid, wife of Richard Kleid, who retired in March from the Town Council, died unexpectedly. She was 80.
The Kleids, who celebrated 59 years of marriage in November, celebrated his 13 years as a member and president of the council at a party on March 22. at Club Colette. She died while asleep at home the next day.

She was born in Chicago and raised in Urbana, Ohio. She was an avid horse lover in her youth and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Denise S. Meyer, a resident, died after a battle with cancer. She was 67.
She was the wife of William A. Meyer, former board chairman of the Kravis Center, former vice chairman of JFK Medical Center and chairman of Meyer Jabara Hotels.

Upon moving to Palm Beach County in 1976, she became assistant to John Sansbury, the then-county administrator. She later ran the office of lunar astronaut Ed Mitchell and subsequently started her own advertising specialties company, The Specialty Shoppe.

Hannah Honig Kamin, of Pittsburgh and Palm Beach, died 18 days after the death of her husband of 59 years, Marvin Kamin.
She was a graduate of Chatham University. With her husband, she was well-known in her communities as well as nationally as a leader, fundraiser and philanthropist.
In Palm Beach, her board and leadership positions included the American Lung Association, Ballet Florida, Jewish National Fund, Jewish Guild for the Blind and UJA Women’s Executive Committee.
Nationally, Mrs. Kamin was a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Millennium Committee to Save American’s Treasures and the Women’s Leadership Forum of the Democratic National Committee. She also was active with the National Council of Jewish Women.

Peter Pulitzer, businessman, sportsman and scion of two prominent American families, died at home, surrounded by his children. He was 88.

Born Herbert Peter Pulitzer, he was the son of Herbert Pulitzer and Gladys Munn. His maternal grandparents were Charles and Carrie Louise (nee Gurnee) Munn. His paternal grandparents were newspaperman Joseph and Katherine (nee Davidson) Pulitzer. He attended St. Mark’s in Southborough, Mass., a feeder school for the Ivy League.
He went to college but soon become bored and dropped out, using a half-million dollars of his family’s money to seed a business career that began with a liquor store and bowling alley and grew to include citrus groves, cattle ranches, a popular Palm Beach restaurant, wide real estate holdings, and hotels.
Along the way, he gained a reputation as a ladies man and married three times. The first was to Lillian “Lilly” McKim who went on to achieve fame as a fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer. He married Roxanne Dixon in 1976 and their acrimonious divorce in 1982 became tabloid fodder. His marriage to Hilary King in 1986 was his longest, 32 years.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”
The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.
“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”
The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.
In the final circle, Bruce was up against his brother John McCaw who, with wife Gwen McCaw, competed for Best of Show with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder. Also in the Winner’s Circle was a 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by William E. (Chip) Connor of Reno, Nevada.
The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.
This Pebble Beach Concours also raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities.
Celebrity guests who were in attendance included comedian Jay Leno, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, media personality and former defensive end for the New York Giants Michael Strahan, actor Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”
The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.
“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”
The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.
In the final circle, Bruce was up against his brother John McCaw who, with wife Gwen McCaw, competed for Best of Show with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder. Also in the Winner’s Circle was a 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by William E. (Chip) Connor of Reno, Nevada.
The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.
This Pebble Beach Concours also raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities.
Celebrity guests who were in attendance included comedian Jay Leno, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, media personality and former defensive end for the New York Giants Michael Strahan, actor Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.
