This brown and red kaftan was first worn by Mahidevran Sultan in the first episode of the third season of Magnificent Century. The kaftan was used three times in the fourth season where it was worn by Nazenin Hatun in the fourth episode, by Canfeda Hatun in the twenty-first episode and by Fahriye Kalfa in the twenty-sixth episode.
It also appeared in the spin-off Magnificent Century: Kösem where it can be seen on Menekşe Hatun in the seventh episode of the first season. The kaftan was also worn by Meleki Hatun in the first episode of the second season as well as by an unnamed harem member in the twenty-fourth episode.

Süleyman going to Manisa with Nazenin is actually the sort of petty move of his that I like. It drives home that this is all a game between Süleyman and Hürrem and these concubines are the pawns. Firuze fits into this in a different way too since at first he only allowed that dance to happen because he had a disagreement with Hürrem over the Valide’s rooms and was angry at her. And he clearly enjoyed how jealous Hürrem was of Isabella. The Isabella arc’s beginning doesn’t fit since he didn’t have a problem with Hürrem at that point of the show, but I always read it as him being annoyed and having had his ego hurt by Isabella constantly calling him “barbaric” and so him deciding to seduce Isabella to prove a point to himself (not that he wasn’t attracted to Isabella as well, he was, but I think his primary motivation was this). Except, of course, it was horribly executed.

Nazenin wearing a kaftan Mihrimah wore two episodes earlier to her first night with Süleyman feels a bit icky to me. Did the costume department truly not have another sheer gold lace kaftan they could have used?
Tumblr media
The dress underneath is Firuze's. I don't know what to think about that but it isn't as creepy as her wearing his daughter's kaftan.

hi!! it's me again. what are your thoughts on how this franchise portrays harem drama? personally, i think they totally wasted the heck out of this premise. you have this place full of women with a very similar trauma, but who are all supposed to compete with each other! perfect for very juicy dynamics and conflicts. the show only does... Mahidevran vs Hurrem. over and over again.
Eh, depends on what you classify as "harem drama". Struggle for power? Complex scheming with plans within plans that fucking Dune pales in comparison to? Girlies starting MINI SLAVE REVOLTS?! Yeah, give me that shit NOW. It can get a little repetitive at times, but it's never boring. When the goal is to just get the guy, it's largely underwhelming and annoying. If only all of it was indeed like Mahidevran vs. Hürrem, because they at least have the juicy long-time struggle, like, they are each other's fucking nemesis, and eventually it's not even about the guy, but about power and survival of their sons.
The Gülnihal drama was only interesting because of the impact on their friendship and because she was more than a one-dimensional enemy for Hürrem to "slay" by killing her or having sex with Süleyman. The Russian concubines were the pointless bullshit ever and also gave us the scene of Hürrem's self-harm, thanks I hate it. And thank God, her rivalry with Hürrem was never a big part of Sadika's storyline, which is why I loved it so much (well, that and of course the fact that the main point of it was shanking Süleyman, even if her mission was ultimately unsuccessful).
Isabela Fortuna was wasted af, like, imagine the good shit this might've been if it was actually focused on her escape attempts and relationship with Süleyman in ways that aren't just Stockholm syndrome. Also, her rivalry with Hürrem sucked. Like, bitch, why are you attacking this girl?! She doesn't want to sleep with Süleyman any more than you want her to! Then there are the two chicks in season 2 that Süleyman didn't even look at before sending them away, again kinda wasting our time.
Firuze... *sigh* I know some of y'all like this storyline and are able to find something good and worthwhile in it. Good for you. Because I personally couldn't stand it. I really don't get what Süleyman sees in this chick, like I am pretty sure he's just getting off on Hürrem's anger and despair. Or maybe he's sleeping with her just to see how he'd like a girl that isn't an insufferable drama queen for once. I don't know, because the show doesn't answer this most interesting of questions. So instead the whole thing devolves into an endless catfight that distracts us from Ibrahim's eminent demise, which is kind of a problem, since I've been looking forward to Ibrahim's death for the entire previous season. Thanks, I hate it.
Nazenin is just there, because Fatma thinks it's funny to make Hürrem suffer. She also says something about a prince, but that part of her plan was always kinda dumb. Nazenin is annoying and I hate her, but I like Fatma, so in the end it just ends up being less bad than the other ones, but still not good.
I will say, Fatma Hatun's quest to fuck Mustafa was very entertaining at first, but then he shuns her for a more stable girl and the whole thing devolves into the predictable yandere bullshit that I hate so much. I mean, this is Fatma, some yandereing is to be expected, but for it to be the focus of her character? No. Fuck you. Also, Fatma and Nurbanu are the only two women who are in any way skilled in the art of getting into man's pants. Also, Firuze, kinda. Others either use super crude methods (dancing, or boob touching - hi Efsun) or just are themselves, which don't get me wrong, that's often quite enough, but still, it's more fun for us as viewers when they get creative. I complained endlessly about Rumeysa and Ayşe's whole thing, and I don't think it gets any better later. Also, it's pointless af. Thanks, I hate it.
Reyhan or whatever her name is is the most boring part of Nurbanu's whole existence and I hate her. Like, Nurbanu is seriously on a whole another level from this bitch, no wonder she is just shoved into the background untill the murder attempt.
Kaya only exists to explain Bayezit's older kids and for Huricihan to be horrible to. I hate both of them.
Mahfiruz the Greek was horrible, but kinda clever, which means she had potential against the scrappy little thing like Anastasia. I also liked Sayeşte's storyline... So of course they had to kill both of them and bring in Mahfiruze the Circassian, the most annoying bitch in the universe. Katerina was there to be sexy and threatening, and was supremely bad in both. Nazenin was easier to take seriously. But Yasemin takes the cake for the biggest waste of a character. Like can you imagine, her and Kösem learning they are sisters?! The drama?! The joy in what was to be joyless times for Kösem?! But nooo, she had to be killed to... Show us what a monster Safiye is? As if we haven't just seen an entire season of that?! Fuck off with that.
The Osman-Meleksima-Akile thing again never went anywhere, why didn't they just cut Akile entirely is beyond me. Like, it's not like they are averse to that - they did cut a lot of superfluous children of the sultans.
I haven't seen the entirety of season 2 of Kösem, but I will say this - getting me to care who gets the privilege of being in an utterly terrible relationship with Murat is a doomed endeavour, and it sure as hell isn't made any easier by Farya and Ayşe being boring and terrible respectively.

1 and 9 Salty Asks for original MC?
What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?
Oh, huh, so, while I know this specified MC in a way, my answer is actually from MCK in that I don’t really get the hype around Kösem and Ahmed. While there are some high points, for the most part the effort to bill Ahmed as a “storybook prince” got a little too hard to believe at times. And that was even before I started to do a dig into the actual history that could have made things more interesting, in my opinion.
Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?
Hmm...not any that are popular, I think? The only one that comes close is Mahidevran with Suleiman, but that's only because how I sometimes interpret their real life relationship.
Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?
Oh, absolutely, but more often than not only if it's a constantly spammed one.
Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?
Nothing is ever going to sell me on the idea of Huricihan with Bayezid. Her concept (and that of her brother’s who is apparently…forgotten?) is absolutely wasted by the show overall and never more so here.
Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
Funnily enough, this is one of those "you can try, but I've had worse not stop me" moments.
Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?
So, hated is too strong a word, really, but I do have a newfound appreciation for the Nigar/Ibrahim arc. Or, more particularly, understanding that I can examine and enjoy it while still wanting to punch Ibrahim in the face most of the time.
Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?
More often than not with this show, it’s been the reverse, but…does the YT comment section of the English translation of the show count haha?
Have you received anon hate? What about?
Ooh boy, on the subject of the English YT channel for this show…
I’ve gotten some exhausting takes over there. So much so that when I discovered the fandom for this show, I was honestly shocked at how chill everyone was. People here have been, by the majority, far more prepared to say “we might not agree, but I’m okay with that and want to hear your side” than anywhere else I’ve encountered for this fandom. Which is outside the norm for ones that I’ve otherwise been a part of.
Most disliked character(s)? Why?
In all honesty, Firuze used to rank here, but, after a few rewatches, I actually find her intriguing. Especially because, out of them all, she was the most realistic contender Hürrem had to face over the sultan’s heart.
Isabella ranks with Nazenin for me for how sheerly unnecessary their plotlines were. Both required far too much suspension of belief for me to enjoy their arcs. Or, alright, I did absolutely laugh over the concept of Nazenin being a threat to anyone in the harem outside of, perhaps, Nurbanu. But, honestly, that’s why I’ll stand by it making more sense for her to have been in Selim’s (or Bayezid’s?) harem than Suleiman’s.
Also I’ll own to this one…I can’t stand Fatma Hatun. There’s something about her that rubs me the wrong way as much as I think it’d be interesting to do a character study of her.

Magnificent Century Character Tag Game
(I didn't get tagged, but I love idea and never actually post anything about MC, soo let's go! Hope you can forgive me.)
I really want to thank @hurremsphoenix and @minetteskvareninova I saw their posts and dare to write that 💖 (If you don't want to be tagged or you are uncomfortable dm me I will delete the tag.)
Warnings: It can be long, because I watched whole series long ago, now I am rewatching some episodes for personal reasons.
The character I first fell in love with: Hatiçe, because I very liked her early softness and her frobidden love with Ibrahim was soooo romantic (at least for me, I love such things), later I didn't like her behaviour and thing that each of Suleiman sister was anti Hürrem. Early Gülfem, I like that despite losing son, she had respect from Süleyman and Hafsa, also she was wise in her way.
The character I never expected to love so much as I do now: it's hard question, but I guess Mahidevran, in early episodes I couldn't actually decide between her and Hürrem, but later I appreciate her and Mustafa dynamic and her caring way towards him.
The character I love than none else does: Nasuh, I really like him and think that he deserved better. Nigar, I just loved characters aside Sultans and odalisks, she was interesting and I like her as kalfa. Atmaca, I have soft spot for him because of being loyal. (I kinda have things for side characters.)
The character everyone loves, I just don't: Nurbanu I think, but it isn't strong dislike, she wanted to help Selim, but I didn't like her ways with other hatuns and big ego. I actually like Nurbanu~Hürrem relation and later dealing with Selim.
The character I am obsessed with: Çihangir, my cinnamon roll, adorable chocolate chip. I love absolutely everything about him. He was wise, caring and strong in his own way. He deserved better for sure and I love that he actually knew what was happening in palace. When he said that Mustafa can't have bad intentions when he has military advance - in episode when Mustafa raided capital because of posion jacket, just made my heart jump. I can go on and go on about Çihangir. (Well I wasn't watching in English but in my native so sorry for bad translations about series)
The character I would slap: Süleyman for a lot of reasons, late Ibrahim and Hatiçe like come on, Rüstem (he was annoying me almost everytime), Nazenin, Dilşah and a little Huricihan but that would be the gentlest slap in history of gentlest slaps.
The character I'd want to be: Çihangir, as I said he was wise, strong and he got fears but he was facing them. Hürrem, but in way of being determinated and knowing yourself. Atmaca as said above he was loyal.
The paring I love: early Hatiçe and Ibrahim, Huricihan and Bayezid (forbidden love too), Selim and Nurbanu, I like their dynamic, but in separate way not really. Selim was doing everything to be good in Süleyman eyes, despote having flaws (wine drinking). Nasuh and Sadika, but from his perspective, but very little. Çihangir and Huricihan again from his perspective, it was pure and innocent love. I had attempt to read about Leyla and Manjun because of that. Bayezid and Defne, late I prefered them than Nurbanu and Selim, I like that he forgive her and Defne was different than Nurbanu. I want to include there brotherly love between Mustafa, Bayezid and Çihangir, I am hoe for strong siblings bonds and I loved that in this trio each of them was unique. Mustafa had to be careful all the time, Bayezid thought he was not appreciated and Çihangir was struggling with his disability. I like that they found comfort and understanding in themselfes.
The paring I despise: Süleyman and Firuze, I always have mixed feelings about them, but although Firuze seemed different and something new in series, in whole I don't like their paring. Attempting to give Mihrimah love interest just to show how she was unhappy. Right Rüstem was older than her, because of marriage he have become Grand Vizier, and was loyal to Hürrem, but actually for me Mihrimah was in good position during marriage. She was close to palace, so could visit it anytime, Süleyman and Hürrem took care of all her worries and troubles, she had respect, her husband too in general way. Right she couldn't get divorced, because Hürrem would lost her support and her brothers would be in danger, it was hard situation, but personal for me, there were more + than -. Rüstem loved her and he might annoy her with that, but it was better than hate I guess 😅 and they had same goal, to take care of Selim, Bayezid and Çihangir.

This brown and golden kaftan was first worn by Mahidevran Sultan in the twenty-second episode of the second season of Magnificent Century. It was worn again by Mihrimah Sultan in the thirty-third episode of the third season. The kaftan appears twice in the fourth season, first on Nazenin Hatun in the tenth episode and then on Rana Sultan in the twenty-sixth episode.

I don’t find Fatma Sultan’s Nazenin plot as nonsensical as I have seen people criticize it to be. She is not wanting this new hypothetical Prince on the throne, she just wants to diminish Hürrem’s influence in the Harem and in Süleyman’s heart and a new Sultana is a good way to do it.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle has always been a motto of Magnificent Century. Once you start looking, you see reused costumes everywhere but I never noticed how much they used this one purple dress. With Nazenin and Nurbanu they only gave us two episodes between Nazenin and then Nurbanu wearing it. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is also in Kösem but I just haven’t spotted it yet.

What something you think Hurrem sultan suffered from and other sultanas in SOW didn’t have the same barrier? Would you want to re-write them and have them all share experiences?
A couple of things are
On the first night that she arrives, she and the other new concubines are inspected both in the harem and in the hamam. The second one is extremely invasive and we only see it in this specific instance. We don't see it in any other concubine arrival scene. Not even Nurbanu's. I would either have it still be something that happens to most of the concubines or omit it entirely. It's a particularly awful experience to go through.
The constant mistitling early on. Even after she gave birth to Mehmet she was still called Hatun for a long time. Which is a sharp contrast to Nazenin, who gets called a Sultana even though she gave birth to a daughter. And Kösem gets called a Sultana before she even gives birth. I would probably still call Nazenin a hatun. Or better yet. Get rid of that whole arc and make Raziye Mahidevran's older daughter.
The Valide Sultan and Hatice both on multiple occasions tell her that her children aren't *really* hers. I would write this one as a more common occurrence. As something a blood member of the Dynasty would say to the mothers. And let the mothers be on a scale of discomfort with it depending on who they are as individuals. For instance, Mihrimah could say this to Nurbanu. And then maybe could realise what she'd just done (mirroring what she'd seen her aunts do) and regret it or (if it's at a point where she's still alive) Hürrem could call her out on it.
