I find it interesting the way that, when Elphaba first showed up at Nessa’s house in Act 2, Nessa wanted her to leave immediately.

Yet,

After her beloved Boq confessed his love for another woman and then promptly got almost-murdered by Nessa (murder is not a love language), Nessa was suddenly begging Elphaba not to leave her, when not ten minutes earlier she was practically shoving her sister out the door.

She thinks Boq is lost to her for good. So now she needs Elphaba, even though she was just going on and on about how she hated her for what she did.

She needs Elphaba, not because Elphaba is Elphaba, but because she always needs somebody to cling to. And one can analyze whether this is a result of always being treated like she can’t manage on her own, or being really lonely throughout her life, or whatever. But I find the trait itself interesting.

She always needs someone, just one person, to focus all of her attention on, and she expects all their attention in return. It doesn’t seem to matter who, or how they actually feel about her. She just needs one small reason to love them, and she’ll be convinced they love her too. She almost seems to think people are obligated to love her. Like a night at a dance or the ties of family are a binding lifelong contract.

She just wants one person to stay with her and only her forever. So sue me, but I am criticizing the size of her world.

My personal headcanon is that Glinda actually hated Nessarose.

First and foremost I want to make it clear I don't think Glinda ever intended for Nessa to die. And even if she did I think Glinda would protect Nessa if only for Elphaba's sake.

But I do think that Glinda had a very unique third-party perspective on the sisters' relationship, and she would have seen how Nessa treated Elphaba; as nothing more than a personal assistant and human punching bag.

Glinda and Nessa were once extraordinarily alike. Both were beautiful girls, spoiled endlessly by their parents. They both treated Elphaba awfully, but the difference is Glinda has learnt, grown, and probably agonized over it. Nessa hasn't.

This was solely due to Elphaba. It was Glinda's friendship with Elphaba which taught her selflessness. And nothing shows this as clearly as her own desire for Elphaba's success, not only her own.

She even seems to recognize that Nessa is one of the things in Elphaba's life that is actually limiting her, and encourages space and separation between the sisters, which, arguably, is what's best for Elphaba.

Elphaba isn't the only person Glinda cares about that has been hurt by Nessa's actions either. Despite Glinda's moral flaws, she isn't blind to open cruelty and tyranny, especially concerning people she cares about. Nessa's treatment of the Munchkins, and Boq in particular, would not have gone unnoticed by Glinda.

Jealousy is also a huge part of Glinda's personality, so I can imagine her believing herself a better sister to Elphaba than Nessa. Or one more deserving of a sister than Nessa.

I attribute her reaction to Nessa's death to her guilt rather than any lost love between them. I can imagine that in the absence of Elphaba, Glinda might have wanted to step in as a grieving sister, placing flowers on her grave, saying a prayer.

It's further supported when Elphaba shows up, and Glinda immediately drops this act, showing her true blasé reaction to Nessa's death, whilst remaining sympathetic to Elphaba's pain.

Regardless of whether she is the besties-with-everyone schoolgirl in Act One or the happy-go-lucky Good Witch of the North in Act Two I can not imagine, in the musical, Glinda feeling anything but contempt towards Nessa.

Combining these two asks, because they're kind of similar. I adore this dynamic as well, and it was so wonderfully explored in the Love Club so stop me if you heard this one before. ;)

Shell has this adorable juvenile little crush on Glinda and especially at first gets super shy around her (any youngest siblings in the house whose siblings brought over (girl) friends and you got super shy all of a sudden for Some Reason?? no ? just me?? ok...)

Both Nessa and Shell tease Elphaba mercilessly because they've never seen Fabala smile so much and be so goddamn happy when they're around Glinda and it's gross.

Elphaba is absolutely dumbfounded by this: What do you mean "smile more"?!? I smile as much as I used to!! Not even having processed how much of an affect Glinda truly had on her; how much happier she is.

Glinda is so goddamn curious about Elphie's childhood (you know they'd barely tell anything about this) so when Glinda finally gets the chance she practically grills Nessa and Shell about how Elphie was as a child.

Elphaba hides the photo album with her pictures in advance. Nessa knows all of Elphie's hiding spots, finds it and commands Shell to get it. The three of them (Glinda, Nessa and Shell that is) have an absolute lark with it for an entire afternoon. Elphaba sulks somewhere in a corner.

Depending if Elphaba and Glinda return to Colwen Grounds for Sad Reasons (like someone dying), Glinda definitely would try to plan all kinds of Activities to get the kids out of the house and away from the depressing reality. There's not much to do in Colwen Grounds tbh, so they mostly end up hiking and taking long nature walks. This surprises Elphie at first, because they see Glinda as such a spoiled city girl, but having grown up in Frottica, Glinda is a country girl at heart and actually loves outdoor hiking.

Nessa protests many times over that she's "only two years younger!!!" and she "detests Elphaba and Glinda having to babysit her". While in actuality, she's kinda relieved they dropped everything to return to Colwen Grounds, so she doesn't have to do all the scary Legal Adult Stuff or has to guide a frustrated Nanny through the process of filling in tax forms.

Elphaba has to feed them all since Glinda is a disaster in the kitchen, Nessa has no arms and Shell is too young. Glinda makes sure the kids do their homework and go to bed on time.

On the trip over, Glinda and Elphaba were excited about the prospect of so much time together, even if it were just the evening after the kids went to bed. Many romantic and even horny scenarios were fantasized about. What actually happens—each night, without fail—is that they conk out on the couch 5 minutes after the kids go to sleep. Domestic bliss at its finest.

I went to see the Wizard of Oz musical this week and I’ve literally already booked to see Wicked in the summer, I fear I have a new hyperfixation coming on I am so in love with this universe and it’s characters omg
