So I dragged myself kicking and screaming and, yes, mostly in denial, through the last episodes of A Journey to Love.

My thoughts can be summarized as follows:

Obviously this is mainly due to me being horrifically traumatized by Yuan Lu’s death. After all, they told us from the get go he wouldn’t live to 20. They made it clear he had a deadly heart disease. And then. They had the nerve. They had the audacity. They had the actual fucking bahoonga BALLS to follow through!?

But then I found myself sobbing at literally every good guy death scene, plus all of the mourning scenes. The latter was in large part thanks to Alen Fang's acting - deepest apologies to him for just referring to his character as 'the slutty one' for the majority of the show. Not that I was wrong. Also thanks to strong performances from He Lan Dou for Yuan Lu's death.

Anyway so I need to add this gif x4 for the Liudao Hall babies:

Qian Zhao, da ge, who made mistakes but always did right in the end

Sun Lang, who just wanted to hold something fluffy at the end, dying a hero

Yuan Lu, who died in his princess's arms after running to deliver a letter rendered useless by the Emperor of An's greed.

Yu Shisan, who lived as he lived and had such a happy moment with Chu Yue right before it all became irrevocable.

When they added Yu Shisan to the snowball fight, I just about lost it. Liu Yuning's acting there - having the realization about Shisan's death as he watched them play in real time was so well done. Really hurt.

Plus I'll make a couple of versions with edits.

For the Wu Emperor. I knew it was gonna happen from the spoilers but damn, him genuinely learning the value of friendship and brotherly love made me root for him. Dude did not deserve to go out like that. Thank goodness for the magic of CDramas where he lived just long enough to pass on his will to Ning Yuanzhou, and do one last act of good.

It also ensured Duke of Chu was able to pass on his command to his daughter, Chu Yue, before dying of the same (was not clear if her bro died or not, or if dad was always going to choose her).

And for Deng Hui. Started out thinking he was just a sexist bastard. Turns out he was one of the most principled characters in the show.

Their deaths didn't make me cry, but I respect them.

Also loved Chen Du Ling's (Empress of Wu) small part in this. I may not like all of her characters but she can deliver a scene and hold a room. It was a bit cathartic to see her put every man in their place, and basically decide the fate of two countries, even though her lament that she'd only ever have power through another held true.

Ah Ying, my baby girl. This is a character that could have turned people off from the beginning. Thanks to strong writing and stronger acting, it did not. I was super impressed with He Lan Dou. She can dial it up and dial it down in a single take, and can play big dramatic scenes with a subtlety that some older actors cannot grasp. This was the first thing I've seen her in, though for her and Chen You Wei (Yuan Lu) I might watch Tiger and Crane if someone tells me it's good.

I still think Li Tongguang is a perverted and creepy child, who never managed to learn (except in literally the last ep), but at least I trust that he will treat Ah Ying well. I don't hold it against him for screwing up the battle - he was trying to be benevolent but made a bad choice.

The main couple win it for me this year. What an inspired pairing. They beat out heavy hitters including Bai Lu x Everyone which was near impossible. Something to do with letting Liu Shi Shi use Liu Yuning's height against him at every possible moment. Also the 'if you die, I'll finish the job and then follow you' is my favorite dynamic. I swear when Ruyi threw those bombs, NOT NEEDING TO HAVING ALREADY SUCCEEDED AT KILLING THE KING AND PRINCE, just to join him, y'all I died. Good for whoever posthumously gave her the Marquis title on her own (not just furen) - couldn't tell if it was Li Tongguang acting as regent or Dayang (great shot of those two at the end).

The final episode was one of the best final cdrama episodes I've seen. I might have to make another post about that. In sum, despite losing a large portion of the well-loved cast, the remainder gave a world-class finale. The visuals were incredible (explosions are my favorite). The final scene was beautiful (though I'm a bit surprised they gave it to Chu Yue instead of Ah Ying who knew all 6 of them closely).

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌

now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.

then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.

turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.

however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.

SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

i need you to know that when i read ur conspiracy theory post about qu yuan and 1) i had literally never considered that before and i would like to know about him being the king's secret gay lover and 2) ive known for literal years that laozi was not a real person but every time i hear it's a shock.

(follow-up to this here post that was super fun to write)

okay!!!! okay, one super quick discussion of literary transvestism in the Chinese literary tradition coming right up!!!

So in 1944, Sun Cizhou wrote an essay (“屈原是文學弄臣的發疑”) speculating that Qu Yuan had, in fact, been the lover of King Huai of Chu. His arguments primarily revolved around 1) reading the outpourings of passion in the Lisao literally rather than allegorically, 2) drawing on parallels with Song Yu’s biography (supposedly Qu Yuan’s disciple, who wrote whatever part of the Chuci that Qu Yuan didn’t write; also a very historically suspect personage). Since then, there’s been plenty of forum arguments about ‘whether or not Qu Yuan was gay,’ but that’s a question that’s impossible to answer because 1) concepts of gender and sexuality have shifted over 2000+ years of history, and it’s a pretty questionable scholarly practice to try and impose modern labels on historical figures, and 2) I’m still on the ‘Qu Yuan never existed’ boat and having too much fun to get off.

China has a long and glorious history of non-heterosexual rulers and emperors; the terms ‘cut-sleeve’ and ‘bitten peach’ are both references to stories about rulers and their adoring love for male ministers/courtiers, and for the most part, homosexual relationships weren’t frowned upon unless they interfered with the governing of the state or the production of an heir. (In fact, Li Yan Nian, who I briefly talked about in this post, was implied to be in a relationship with Emperor Wu of Han.) But the point I’m trying to make is: it wasn’t uncommon for rulers to have homosexual relationships with their subjects, so Sun Cizhou’s theory doesn’t come out of nowhere.

What makes things confusing, though, is the poetic/literary practice of transvestitism to register a complaint. This goes all the way back to the 《诗经》Shijing / Classic of Odes, which is one of the most foundational texts (if not the most foundational) of the Chinese literary tradition. One of the students of Confucius is credited with penning an essay (the name of which currently escapes me, and will haunt me forever) that lauded the Odes as a text that expressed the troubles of the common folk through a culturally acceptable medium (i.e. sublimating ill-content into folk songs rather than manifesting in violent rebellion; the 《吕氏春秋》Lvshichunqiu / Annals of Lv Buwei has a line where it says you can tell how a state is doing by listening to the songs of its people). As a result, almost every song in the Odes also has a corresponding political allegory; a ditty complaining about rats in the granary becomes a reference to a famine caused by mismanagement of government resources; a woman yearning after her husband, away at war, becomes the people crying out for a wise, enlightened ruler to lead them through times of strife. It is, as the kids say these days, A Lot.

This tendency to deploy allegory as the socially-acceptable way of registering complaint is picked up by the rest of the tradition, when poetry becomes a more solitary pursuit and we see the emergence of single authors (which is, in no small part, due to Qu Yuan!). Poets (usually male) would deliberately adopt the voice of a jilted woman, remonstrating with her faithless lover, to express their dissatisfaction at their patron or ruler’s inattentiveness. Again, I’m going to borrow words from another post, where I quoted Sima Qian:

“士為知己者死，女為悅己者容” / Men of service die for those who know them; women beautify themselves for those who delight in them.

The parallel drawn between minister/patron and woman/lover (and yin/yang, subordinate/commander, this can go on and on) becomes an established allegory in the tradition, which means the poetic tradition is chock-full of vaguely implicitly homoerotic poetry.

Is everyone in ancient China secretly gay? Of course not! But is everyone at least a little bit gay? Yes!

BUT BACK TO QU YUAN:

It’s hard to convey exactly how genderbendy the Lisao is without shoving all 92 quatrains in your face, but it is very, very genderbendy. The speaker, in one part of the poem, talks about how all the other women in the harem envy them for their delicate brows and moral virtue, and spends a great deal of time self-adorning with fragrant grasses (I learned so many classical Chinese character for plants and I hate them all). But a few hundred lines later, the speaker takes off into the air on a vast and vaguely militaristic spirit journey, crossing the continent in a masculine-coded campaign. The part that has scholars banging their heads against their desks and doing literary acrobatics is that the poem refuses to be neatly boxed into allegory; it’s not like the speaker is clearly male, borrowing a female voice for part of/the length of the poem, the way it is in the rest of the tradition. The speaker of the Lisao seems to freely slide up and down the gender spectrum, being Very Passionate About Everything but also Very Ambiguous About Gender Expression.

And so some folks have taken the outpourings of jealous passion in the Lisao to be literal -- that Qu Yuan was, in fact, a lover of the king, and his comparison of himself to women in an imperial harem is simultaneously literal and allegorical. Again -- we can’t know for sure if Qu Yuan was gay, genderfluid, or even existed, but you can be dang sure that the Lisao is one of the queerest classical texts out there and deserves to be appreciated as such.

《醉梦前尘》爱恨界限不清

This is a line from Zui Meng Qian Chen (idk official title but approximately means Drunkenly Dreaming of the Past), which if I remember correctly is the theme song for the donghua version of Mo Dao Zu Shi. The line roughly translates to “the difference between love and hate is not clear”.

《少年不可欺》爱憎分明

This is a line from Shao Nian Bu Ke Qi (again, official translation unknown but approximately means Youths Should Not be Underestimated), which is the theme song for the Juniors in The Untamed. This line roughly translates to “love and hate are clearly delineated”.

I find it very interesting how obviously in contrast these two lines are. Sure, they’re from two different adaptations, but the theme of love and hate comes through quite strongly in this story. Before his death Wei Wuxian thinks that Lan Wangji hates him when that is the opposite of the truth. His relationship with Jiang Cheng truly muddies the waters between love and hate. Meanwhile, Jin Ling starts knowing very clearly that he hates Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning, the murderers of his parents. He loves his uncles Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao, and his dog. He stabs Wei Wuxian after being rescued by him several times, and only ends up being rescued by him again. At Guanyin Temple he discovers that one of his uncles has been behind the scenes of most of the tragedies that Wei Wuxian was blamed for, and that his other uncle’s long-standing hatred for Wei Wuxian is much less simple. I’m sure Sizhui also has some confusion over love and hate for much of the cultivation world after he remembers his identity as Wen Yuan, A-Yuan. The Juniors start out knowing the clear difference between love and hate, and by the end of the story they’ve grown up enough to know that life isn’t so simple.
