Aha! Finally a comedic thriller that I can use as an example! (Yes! You have my permission to contact me if you have other examples!!)

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 86 minutes of ‘The Lovebirds’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

I like that it’s Jibran who gets his Cinderella moment (complete with a walk down the stairs! Even if it was short)

While writing a review of ‘About Time’ (Link: TBA) --- it struck me that the best films that incorporate a RomCom plot know to make it the ‘B Story’. In the case

PS: Though it wasn’t exactly immensely satisfying, I like that they incorporated a epilogue that showed that they both have not just gotten back together (we can assume right? I would have been keen to watch a deleted scene of them being interviewed of their season of ‘The Amazing Race’).

PPS: I’m not sure if this pitch would work to convince someone to give the film at least 20 minutes...but it would work with me. As long as I get the assurance that it isn’t that bloody (It isn’t! Which I am glad!)

EXT. ALLEY - DAY

LEILANI gets out of her vehicle. Hands on her mouth, still shocked from the events a few seconds ago.

MRS. HIPSTER Oh, my God.

JIBRAN follows. They approach TOM laying on the ground. The guy kneels near him.

MRS. HIPSTER turns to LEILANI in horror.

MR. HIPSTER Oh, my God. What did you do?

JIBRAN tries to say something. His eyes say: I would never do such a thing. A glance towards LEILANI.

LEILANI Oh. No, no, no.

JIBRAN No, no, no.

They both hold up their hands.

LEILANI This is isn't what it looks like.

MR. HIPSTER You hit him with your car, man.

JIBRAN No! I mean, yes, I did, but---

LEILANI That was a while ago. That's all.

MRS. HIPSTER Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

JIBRAN After I hit him, he was alive and, like, great. Got "great". He wasn't having the best day...

LEILANI nods.

JIBRAN ...but he has been breathing since then.

MR. HIPSTER He's ------- dead!

JIBRAN We know he's dead, but we didn't kill him.

MRS. HIPSTER He just said he killed him.

JIBRAN No. I said I hit him with my car.

MR. HIPSTER Clearly it worked. You killed a guy with your car, man!

LEILANI Okay, but, no, wait. We hit him earlier and then we were just driving to...

JIBRAN I was driving and we broke up, and I got distracted...

LEILANI ...Bobby and Reya's house.

JIBRAN ...and I ran through a red light.

LEILANI But then this guy...

JIBRAN But a moustache came in...

LEILANI ...with a weird moustache. We hit him earlier.

JIBRAN ...I helped him a little bit with my map which I admit was definetely a mistake.

The couple just stares at them.

LEILANI He took our car, he ran over him like a dog---

JIBRAN makes the motion of a car running over something.

MR. HIPSTER We need to call the cops.

His partner pulls out her phone.

JIBRAN (increasingly gets more hysterical) And then back and forth ten times and now I've got a dead guy's blood on me...

MRS. HIPSTER starts dialling.

JIBRAN (very shrill) ...and my car's a ------- murder weapon!

LEILANI What are you doing?

MRS. HIPSTER I'm calling 911.

The phone is next to her right ear, and she uses her other hand to block the sound of our protagonist and antagonist with their hysterical word vomit.

LEILANI Please don't do that. We would never hurt anyone.

MRS. HIPSTER (into phone) I'd like to report a murder or whatever.

LEILANI We didn't murder anybody!

MRS. HIPSTER Yeah, stop.

LEILANI You stop!

He turns to JIBRAN.

LEILANI Oh, my God, the police aren't gonna believe us. Do you know how stupid we sound?

JIBRAN looks from LEILANI to MRS. HIPSTER.

MR. HIPSTER This is a citizen's arrest.

LEILANI What is that?

MR. HIPSTER It's an arrest from a citizen.

LEILANI Can you do that?

JIBRAN gently shakes LEILANI. She turns to him.

LEILANI Can he do that?

JIBRAN On the count of three. Okay?

LEILANI nods.

LEILANI On the count of three, what?

He gives her a look.

LEILANI What is that face?

He gives it again.

LEILANI I can't read your face! Just say it.

JIBRAN (under his breath) On the count of three.

LEILANI What? What?

JIBRAN One, two, three. Go!

He takes off running.

LEILANI What?

MRS. HIPSTER (into phone) The guy just ran for it.

LEILANI Jibran!

MRS. HIPSTER (into phone) Okay, the guy's name is Jibran.

JIBRAN pauses and turns back.

JIBRAN Run, Leilani!

MRS. HIPSTER (into phone) And the girl's name is actually Leilani.

LEILANI ----.

LEILANI follows JIBRAN

MRS. HIPSTER (into phone) She's running too now.

'Los tortolitos', una divertida noche de fiesta en Netflix entre el romance y el thriller

Durante una parte importante de los años 80, las noches de locura y desventuras se convirtieron casi en citas obligatorias con las salas de cine. Ahora vemos las películas en casa y apenas hay espacio para noches como aquellas, pero 'Los tortolitos' ('The Lovebirds'), la nueva comedia de de Netflix, se antoja como un plan ideal para pasar una hora y media entretenidos.

Sucedió una noche

Leilani (esplendorosa Issa Rae) y Jibran (un poco excesivo Kumail Nanjiani) llevan cuatro años juntos, pero no parece que las cosas vayan a llegar a buen puerto. Cuando todo parece perdido, un percance arrastrará a la pareja a una serie de acontecimientos a cada cual más loco que, si no acaba con ellos, los hará más fuerte. Durante el prólogo de esta noche loca que es 'Los tortolitos', su director, Michael Showalter, nos recuerda de qué iba eso de 'La gran enfermedad del amor' para dejar paso a una imagen ideal para clavar el título de su película.

Sin suponer ningún adalid de la originalidad, el guión de Aaron Abrams, Brendan Gall y Martin Gero (equipo creativo de 'Blindspot', entre otras cosas) va directo al grano hasta un punto en el que, si uno no sabe de qué va la película porque, por la razón que sea, se ha mantenido al margen de avances, noticias o imágenes, va a pasar un buen rato con total seguridad. Su equilibrada mezcla entre la Screwball más dulce y la comedia políticamente incorrecta funciona a la perfección, si bien no se puede permitir un tercer personaje interesante. Porque aquí nos encontramos ante una pareja que funciona a las mil maravillas pero a la que no le habría venido nada mal un personaje más en el que poder apoyarse. Con todo, la sucesión constante de acontecimientos y las sorpresas, sobre todo en su primera mitad, hacen que la máquina no afloje en ningún momento. Estos tortolitos no tienen tiempo para tonterías, aunque la nueva musculatura de la futura estrella de Marvel tal vez le impida volver a parecer un don nadie.

El amor perjudica seriamente la salud A pesar de sus primeras secuencias, excesivamente dialogadas para no contar nada nuevo en realidad, la película lo apuesta todo a un impacto inesperado, tanto metafórico como lineal, cambiando un tono y un ritmo que se antojaban algo perezosos y desganados en su inicio. Ahí es donde la química de sus protagonistas hace su trabajo, porque ni la realización de Showalter ni las situaciones que presenta el libreto son especialmente atractivas.

No debemos ponernos exquisitos ni pasarnos de alarmistas. 'The Lovebirds' es justo lo que necesitas ahora mismo en tu vida. Es una aventura alrededor de la ciudad con un romance en apuros de por medio. Si la semana pasada nos reíamos con 'La otra Missy' hoy lo hacemos con una nueva comedia que, tal vez, haya creado una pareja a la que seguir la pista.

Si lo que buscas es un cine de calidad, una película con todo el peso de la seriedad y el academicismo de las grandes obras, tal vez no deberías buscar en Netflix. Si, en cambio, estás detrás de una aventura de una noche de emoción y risas, entonces 'Los tortolitos' es una opción ideal que hace un buen programa doble con la película protagonizada por David Spade. Un divertido enredo romántico multirracial que sabe reírse precisamente de su propia esencia.

The Lovebirds

The Lovebirds [trailer]

A couple experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery.

The murder story part is rather dumb, and the relationship story arc very formulaic. What still makes it fun to watch are the conversations and bickering between Rae and Nanjiani.

That it is overall quite fast paced also helps. I only wish they wouldn't have so often milked some comic scenes to death.

"Is that blood on your face?" - "And it's a big disgrace".

Aldwell William Taylor,Resident of Malacca,Malaysia from(1798 - 1803).He was born in 1759.Son William Taylor of Yatton, Herefordshire and Elizabeth Aldwell. He nominated a cadet for Madras for the season 1775/1776 HEIC. Deputy Chairman (John Roberts) at the recommendation of Mr Woodhouse, aged 17. Appointed 10th November 1775.He married to Ann Charlotte Metford.He died in 1817.
