The Day of the Dolphin (1973). A marine biologist teaches his dolphins to communicate in English but shady characters plan to kidnap the trained mammals for a more sinister purpose.
I pretty much could only think of The Simpsons spoof of this while I was watching it, haha, which is, y’know. Not the best sign. I’m actually really flexible around silly premises and plots that ask you just to go along for the ride, but this movie is just bad. It does very little to make you care about any of the characters involved, and instead rests on it’s stranger premise to keep you invested. It’s just. A very weird film. 3/10.

tag 9 people you want to know better/catch up with.
I was tagged by @ereborne.  These are fun and I am trying to do better about being on Tumblr since it’s one of the few social corners of the internet that brings me joy without FOMO /shrug.
last song: “Iris” by Cuchulain and Katie Kuffel. This literally just came out and honestly Cuchulain’s voice is so soothing/melodic.
last movie: Black Widow!
currently reading: Maisey Yates’s Golden Valley series (the set about the family that raised themselves), Nichole Severn’s Hunting Grounds series, and planning to read the Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars duology after the Maisy Yates books (also eagerly anticipating Hot Under His Collar’s release by Andie J. Christopher)
currently watching: Loki (I am only 2 episodes in), Olympic prep coverage, maybe finally going back to watch the last season of Teen Wolf, Shark Week! (Nat Geo and Discovery specials). . . I’m very much popcorning between whatever can catch my attention
currently craving: An extra day in my weekend so I can finish this latest editing project without forgoing decadent amounts of sleep. . . Plus a grilled cheese sandwich and a mug of tomato soup. Instead I have chocolate caramel pre-mixed iced coffee milk drink and 200 pages to edit by Sunday noon-ish.
Since I know very few people on here, and only kind of know a few more, I am tagging: @standingstonecircles, @kaylithographica, @runswithpuns, @piratefalls, @quidditchncoffee, @the-knights-who-say-book
6 is . . . close to 9. Right? Close enough? It’s 2/3 there. More than half.
Can you tell I just cruise on here to scream into the void and find things to make myself smile?

Crystal Palace Double-Feature:  “For Madmen Only” is a great new documentary on the life of improv comedy pioneer and legend Del Close, who honed his almost religious devotion to furthering the art of improv at St. Louis’ famed Crystal Palace with Elaine May, Mike Nichols and others.  To Close, there was something mystical, some ultimate answers for life to be found, when going out on the stage without a script.
Close carried his torch of improv evangelism around the country (and Canada), mentoring/directing/teaching groups like The Committee and Second City in Chicago (and Canada).  What we know as comedy today exists because of what Close grew from his experience here in St. Louis.   Or was it that the -madness- of Close grew from this same experience?
Whatever the case, the documentary has a couple of special (and spoiler-filled) twists which makes me want to watch this again, makes this more than just an entertaining look at the past of popular culture.
The director of Close at the Crystal Palace was Theodore J. Flicker, another very interesting character who went on to write and direct films like “The President’s Analyst”.  Starring James Coburn and Godfrey Cambridge, this 1967 piece of paranoid absurdity follows the adventures of a psychiatric analyst for the President of the United States, who discovers there’s as much to worry about from the Russians and Chinese as there is from the various competing agencies of American intelligence.
Very entertaining hoot, with Coburn playing against type — as more of a lover than a fighter — and with hip and groovy people and places of the times he encounters in his escape to somewhere.   There’s even a street fight in front of the Cafe Wha?
Cambridge is excellent, as always — Criterion Channel is streaming his Watermelon Man and Cotton Comes to Harlem right now, which you should watch, as well — and “Analyst” also features very funny co-starring bits from the memorable character actor Severn Darden, who was part of the original improv group at the Crystal Palace with Close and Flicker.
“For Madmen Only” and “The President’s Analyst” are both rentable from Amazon Prime, though “Madmen” may be making an appearance at a theater around town too, if we’re lucky.

[Review] Over the Flames by Nichole Severn
Tumblr media
Over the Flames by Nichole Severn is a romantic suspense novel that is book 1 in her Hunting Grounds series.
Truth be told this was my first foray into books written by Severn and also a return after probably many years to the subgenre that is romantic suspense.
What drew me to this book initially was really the concept of the two protagonists being ex husband and wife. This book follows the story between Arden Olsen - an aspiring and ambitious investigative journalist and her exhusband, FBI agent Lawson Mitchell. The opening of the book, and the entire premise, follows Arden as she semi-recklessly tries to follow leads on the death and disappearances of her long time colleague.
Understandably Lawson finds himself time and again in situations trying to tirelessly protect Arden from the killer who is still at large and together they try to solve the mysterious murder of her mentor.
Through it all, it clear to see the attraction and caring between these characters is still alive as ever even if Arden tries to ignore it.
As the pair bond through the investigation they also address some of the main- and predictable -complications to their marriage.
As a romantic suspense it’s a good story, I don’t think I would personally return to this genre as it’s a bit hard and I think reading it as a marriage in trouble romance is not a primary trope that this book tries to sell. Which is fine!
I have to say I am still intrigued by the second book!!

Guest Review:  The Witness by Nichole Severn
The Witness (Marshal Law Book 2)
Nichole Severn
Harlequin Pub
Jan 26th, 2021
Suspenseful Romance
9781335401557
The Witness by Nichole Severn brings to life its hero and heroine.  Readers get a very suspenseful mystery coupled with a little romance.
Camille Goodman is under the protection of US Marshal Finn Reed after fighting off a serial killer known as The Carver, who was also her fiancé. He would strangle, bind, and carve “Mine” into his victim’s chest.  But she was the only lucky one, when on Valentine’s Day she was able to fight him and escape. The mystery ratches up as another woman is killed even though the supposed Carver is in jail.  Questions arise as new information is discovered.
“The heroine, Camille, relies on her work to get her through the hardest of times of her life. She is the most autobiographical of my characters. I think Camille questions her self-worth. Her whole story is about finding herself, finding her significance, and proving that she does not need her work for her to achieve this.  Overall, she is brave, a fighter, and creative.  The hero, Finn, helps her to see she is stronger than her fears. The hero, Finn, looks like Chris Evans, Captain America. Finn is an alpha male and very protective. He is broken inside and needs to learn to forgive himself. He is guilt-ridden, determined, and reliable.”
“What I wanted to show is how healing does not mean that everything which happened never happened, but to accept the past and create a better future. I wrote this quote, ‘Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed. It just means the past doesn’t control your life anymore.’ Everyone goes through some diversity in their life. Finn gave Camille perspective. I thought about this quote in my own life when I had to get over my own trauma over the years including betrayal and abuse.”
To compound problems, both the rescuer and the victim form a bond. The banter between them is excellent.  Severn is able to show how the heroine is strong and vulnerable, while the hero is stubborn about getting close because of his traumatic past.
“Their relationship is guarded. They try to do everything they can to not get involved. Because of his past, the hero is determined to keep it professional and not let it get personal. It became dramatic, with lots of ups and downs. They both start out as private people, but they end up opening up to each other. I think Camille is much more emotional, while Finn tries to be intellectual about his feelings.”
There is a lot of action, and danger, with the constant fear of death. Along with additional killings, the mystery is amped up.
