PLEASE read...
flickr
PLEASE read... par Kurt Sadjina Via Flickr : A story of a voyage, of a train and of an incredible lucky break. Every story has a beginning and this one starts on a sunny Sunday morning in Porto. My wife and I, we only wanted to walk a little bit around. Therefore we were dressed, therefore I only had two films with me. (and because of the sunny morning only low ones) Our luck led us to the old railway station. And there we met, we saw the Presidential. A train full of history, a train created for kings, presidents and popes. (But more about that later) I took some photos, I spoke with some of the crew and I got to know the founder and executive curater of that museum trian, Mr. Goncalo Castel-Branco. He looked at me, he saw my old Hasselblad and he asked me what we have planned for the day. „If you have nothing special programmed and if you will take some shots of the train for me, you will be my guests“..... And this was the beginning of a wonderful experience, of a great and incredible day. But now to the photo above: One of the team – trained to perfection to achieve the standart of excellence and responsibility this unique experience demands. Happy Birthday Jimmy Page! : Jimmy Page April 4, 1986 at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. 12 minute guitar solo of “White Summer” / “Black Mountain Side” / “Midnight Moonlight” playing with his post Led Zeppelin band, "The Firm." : There was a day when it was forbidden to bring cameras into concert venues. Smart phones, digital cameras did not exist. As a long time Jimmy Page fan, when I had an opportunity to see Jimmy live (again), I tossed caution to the wind and hid a very basic Minolta 35mm camera into a sweatshirt that was then tucked into my small backpack. I had 24 shots available on a roll of Kodak Ektachrome ASA 1600 35mm slide film. I don't recall the lens, but it was a cheap setup, shot on film I knew would be grainy in a very dark, shaky environment. I wasn't able to setup the camera anywhere other than on my lap, cradled into and somewhat stabilized by the sweatshirt. I guessed at all the setting, tried to focus on the stage without getting caught before the concert began. : I had a bulb cable release stuck into the side of my chair, the camera never left it's hiding spot in the sweatshirt. So, at key point throughout the concert, I'd try to be as still as possible and then nudge the bulb hoping I captured the moment. A few came through with mood, lots of grain and blur, but I felt they were representative of the experience... and kinda' cool, but then left them. Several slides survived until a couple of decades later I was able to salvage them with a Nikon Super CoolScan 9000 ED film scanner. : Now on tour with their follow up album, “Mean Business,” Jimmy and the band or even tighter but still need time for some memorable jams and a very long show peppered with bits of Zeppelin material and more jams! The guitar solos were unlike anything I'd ever seen (and I have seen many shows) extraordinary playing. This shot was a slow, intricate moody mix of crazy string bending. When the house lights went up, concert over, everyone was buzzing with the show we had just witnessed, an iconic guitarist captivating 20,000 people with his six stringed virtuosity! Thank you Jimmy! Leyla Gencer, photo by Lelli e Masotti
An exhibition of photos from La Scala’s extensive archive will open in the first-floor foyer from 12 May, together with a concert on 14 May featuring members of La Scala’s Academy.
Gencer died ten years ago on 10 May 2008. The name of the Turkish soprano was linked with the theatre during her career and continued until her death when she coached opera students of the Academy.
The unique nature of her voice, her stage personality, and the wide range of her repertoire at La Scala have made her part of the theatre’s bricks and mortar.

Leyla Gencer made her debut at La Scala on 26 January 1957 as Madame Lidoine in the world premiere of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites. From that moment on, the Milanese theatre became her second home. She sang frequently in the coming years until 29 December 1979 when she said farewell as Lady Billows in Britten’s Albert Herring.

In those 20 years, she sang Norma, Lucrezia Borgia, Poliuto, and was at the forefront of the Donizetti renaissance with Maria Stuarda, Roberto Devereux, Belisario, and Caterina Cornaro. She was also noted for Verdi heroines: Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Elena in I vespri siciliani, Aida, Amelia/Maria in Simon Boccanegra, and Lady Macbeth.

She sang two fundamental roles from the second half of the 18th century: Gluck’s Alceste and Mozart’s Idomeneo. In 1958 she appeared in the world premiere of Pizzetti’s Assassinio nella Cattedrale. Other operas included Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, Boito’s Mefistofele and Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea.

After 1979 she became the head of the Interpretation Course, and then the Artistic Director of the Theatre Academy at La Scala.
Designer Pier Luigi Pizzi has supervised the photographic exhibition and says of Leyla Gencer,
Un Mito! An immense artist. I have total admiration for an extraordinary career built entirely on commitment, dedication, rigour, self-criticism, and I am infinitely grateful for so many years of special friendship.
We can mention her style, elegance, class, intelligence, culture, irony, humour, frankness, generosity… A great woman.

Rudolf Nureyev died 25 years ago – La Scala pays tribute to the great dancer
Nureyev as Romeo, 1980, photo by Lelli e Masotti Rudolf Nureyev’s debut at La Scala was on 9 October 1965 when, finally, the Milanese public had the opportunity to see the Russian dancer that all the newspapers were writing about. With him was Margot Fonteyn, and they danced Romeo and Juliet. On 16 September 1966 Nureyev and Fonteyn returned with Marguerite and Armand and several days later…
