Heavenly Pearl's Fic Review 2022 - The Baby Question

Next up is "The Baby Question", written for the Yuri!!! On Ice Big Bang.

Summary: “Well, I’ve been thinking… Don’t you think it’s time we had a baby?”

Now that the two of them have officially retired from competitive skating, Yuuri is blindsided when his husband Viktor makes known his desire for a baby. He's never even considered the idea of fatherhood before, but when Yuuko calls him last minute, desperate for someone to look after the ten-year-old triplets so she and Takeshi can celebrate their wedding anniversary, they’re given the opportunity for some first-hand experience taking care of children.

Thoughts: If I had to chose a favorite of the fics I wrote this year, I think this one would probably top the list. Big Bangs are always fun, and the artist I was assigned, dreamin.lilo, did such an amazing job on the artwork. I was only expecting one pic, but they created three adorable pieces to accompany my story.

When it comes to the fic itself, I particularly loved this excerpt near the end:

One kiss, of course, inevitably turned into two, then three. By the fourth, Yuuri had fallen on his back against the seat cushions, Viktor's lips journeying down his neck while his warm hands found their way underneath Yuuri's sweatshirt.

"Vitya…what are…you…doing?" Yuuri asked in between increasingly feverish kisses. "I thought…you were…tired?"

"Got a…second wind." Breathing heavily, Viktor propped himself up and grinned mischievously as he looked down at Yuuri beneath him. "Besides, if we're going to have a baby, there's no better time than the present to start trying, right?"

Yuuri laughed. "Didn't we go over this earlier? You can't get me pregnant!"

"Yuuuuuri!" He collapsed on top of Yuuri, burying his face in Yuuri's sweatshirt. "Don't spoil the fun with your science and logic!"

It's a small moment, but I also love when Yuuri's on the phone with Yuuko, and Viktor, Lutz, and Loop are singing the Japanese version of "Let It Go" off-key in the background. Viktor's totally the type to be a Frozen fan!

Yeah, I was pretty happy with how this one turned out! There's not much I dislike about it. It almost makes me want to write a sequel taking place once Yuuri and Viktor become actual parents… Maybe one day, but I'm not making any promises!

“Holy shit, Phichit,” says Yuuri. “Yakov Feltsman wants to coach me.”

“Holy shit,” Phichit agrees, wide eyed.

(Or: Vicchan lives and fate is a funny thing.)

“I have to go!” Yuuri blurts out. As an assistant coach, he needs to be at Minami’s interviews, even if it is Victor of all people standing right in front of him.

“Wait—” Victor says, but Yuuri has already ducked away. “Yuri!” he hears Victor call from behind him.

Yuuri doesn’t stop. He’s made that mistake before – why would Victor Nikiforov know who Yuuri is this year any more than he did last year? Yuri Plisetsky is debuting as a senior, after all, and might be here at the Cup of China to support his rinkmates.

It may be the sound of Yuuri’s name on Victor’s lips, but there is no way Victor is calling for him.

(Canon-divergence. The Nishigori triplets never upload Yuuri's rendition of Stammi Vicino online. Yuuri buys himself time to decide whether he wants to stay on the ice or retire by joining Minami Kenjirou's team as an assistant coach.

Victor never hears from the beautiful Japanese skater after Sochi. He choreographs On Love: Eros because he can’t quite let go, but it’s getting harder to push himself on the ice and the cracks are starting to show.

Two lost individuals take a different route to find love and life, but they eventually get there all the same.

The line is silent for a moment, as Yuuri stands there, fingers getting progressively colder as he hears Minako breathe in his ear, not really willing to hang up first.

“The Grand Prix is just around the corner,” Minako says, her tone almost wistful.

He breathes out slowly to steady himself. “It is.”

“… Are you going to watch it?”

Yuuri shouldn’t. He knows it’ll feel awful to watch everyone he knows trying their best at something he loves when he can’t anymore. But it’s Phichit’s first year in the Grand Prix, and Victor’s competing, so…

“Of course,” he says, and is proud of how steady his voice comes out. He doesn’t know if it’s a lie or not.

(Or: in which Yuuri's Stammi Vicino skate never gets posted and he retires, Victor keeps himself skating for better or for worse, Yuri struggles with his debut, and missed opportunities have a way of righting themselves.)

I go back and forth on which of these I think is the Nishigori side and which is the Toyomura side, but I have come to the conclusion that one pair of the triplets' grandparents own or owned Ice Castle (and if fewer than both of them own it now, it's because one or both of them is dead and left their share of rink ownership to one or both of Yuuko and Takeshi)

and one or both of the other pair of the triplets' grandparents worked at Ice Castle when Yuuko and Takeshi were kids (and if both, and/or if one or both of them skated there a lot, then their love story revolves around that rink as much as Yuuko and Takeshi's does, for the exact same reasons), and that's who taught Yuuri's first skating lessons

I think we found out Takeshi's and the triplets' ages in deuterocanonical something or other, not the show proper? I know there's an official art, I think from the fanbook, which lists the ages of Yuuko, Takeshi, and Yuuri as of the earliest flashback as 8, 7, and 5

Yuuko of course we heard is two years older than Yuuri as of March in ep 1, when Yuuri is 23, so we can pin Yuuko's 26th birthday to sometime between that March day and Yuuri's 24th birthday in November, probably on the earlier end because the same official source that gives us her maiden name says she's 26 and if her birthday is during the first few episodes then she's 26 for most of the series

Takeshi's 25th birthday must also precede the 18th anniversary of that earliest flashback, while being after Yuuri's 23rd birthday, but could still be on either side of Yuuko's birthday

I like the idea I've seen in several fics (notably @diedraechin 's but I've no idea who thought of it first) that the triplets were born during the 2010 Olympics, because it entertains me greatly to envision Yuuko, late in pregnancy and knowing triplets are usually early but still not expecting to go into labor until March at least, sitting in Yutopia dining area because they have the better TV, with Yuuri because Yuuko and Yuuri both wanted to watch the men's singles live

(and the Ice Ado trailer pins the 2006 Olympics to Paris, not Torino as in RL, which means Lambiel's YOI Torino Olympic silver was either 2002 or 2010; because in RL he came in 4th in 2010 Vancouver and 15th in 2002 Salt Lake City, it seems much likelier that Lambiel's YOI silver was from 2010 Torino)

and it's like three in the morning because time zones, so Takeshi is sleeping in Yuuri's bed (he'll watch the replay later) and Takeshi sleeps like a rock, and Mari and Hiroko and Toshiya are all asleep in their own beds and Yuuri won't dare risk they're not rested enough for work in the morning

and that is how Yuuri ends up missing watching Victor's Olympic performance live because he's holding Yuuko's hand while the triplets are being born

and because Yuuko is exhausted and Takeshi isn't there (and Yuuri is too stressed to process that the people asking him questions are assuming he's Yuuko's husband and/or the triplets' father), that is how the triplets get legally named what everyone was calling them during the pregnancy

...and given the history of the Victuuri romance, Victor on hearing this story decides it would be really romantic if he and Yuuri named their first kid Flip

(Yuuri, who has at some point witnessed if not personally experienced what happens when people think somebody's name sounds like something that's funnier because it's more hurtful, has better sense than that, but he does agree it would fit the pattern and be really romantic, so the kid ends up Filipp or Filippa)

(Victuuri kid 2 can be Sara or Sakura or idk, something that makes it vaguely plausible they'd go by Sally or Sal, which are also conveniently short for Salchow)

Can you imagine Victor, scared out of his mind that he's about to lose Maccachin, that he left Yuuri alone, arriving in Fukuoka and there's Mari to pick him up.

He gets back to Yu-topia and Hiroko has made katsudon for him and she and Mari are apologizing for not watching as they rush to the vet.

When he gets to the vet there's Minako (because she's the most fluent in english) translating statement by statement what the vet says.

Maccachin is fine and heads home, leaving Victor to freak out about Yuuri at Rostelecom. Suddenly the Nishigoris have come over to ask if Victor needs anything, and they all sit and watch Yuuri's Rostelecom skate in the middle of the night together. Hiroko, Minako, Mari, and Toshiya all join them.

And Victor just thinks to himself... "when did i become part of this family?" all while the triplets are snuggled into him on one side and Macca on the other.

For a man whose family is never mentioned at all, whose company is snubbed even by his coach (Yakov ILY but you were a jerk at Beijing) traveling from where home technically is to Hasetsu, and realizing that now home is something different.

Home is where Yuuri is. Because that’s where family is too.

Nishigori Takeshi

He's Yuuri's childhood friend and ex-rinkmate. He works at "Ice Castle Hasetsu" and he's Yuuri's great supporter, often helping him with his basic training.

Nishigori Yuuko

Wife of Takeshi, who also works at "Ice Castle Hasetsu". Yuuri looks up to her. She's a fan of Victor and cares a lot not only about Yuuri, but about Yurio as well.

Nishigori Axel, Lutz and Loop

Nishigoris' triplets, called "Skating Otaku Sisters". Using their parent's smartphones they post on social media and organize "Onsen on ICE" - they are no limits for them.

Okugawa Minako

Ex-ballet dancer, currently running a ballet classroom in Hasetsu. To Yuuri, she's a loving, but still strict teacher. She follows Yuuri all around the world to be his support, but also because that's her own hobby [figure skating]

Makkachin

Victor's standard poodle. A dog with a friendly and calm personality, that came together with Victor to Hasetsu. Also a glutton.

Minami Kenjirou

He showed an outstanding performance last year at Japanese Nationals that he participated in as a junior competitor, and at the young age of 16, he won bronze medal which made him the center of attention. In this season, which is his debut season in senior division, for the first time he has successfully landed a quadruple jump during The Chugoku-Shikoku-Kyushu Championships. He's body is small, but his skating is very lively and he has that something in him that makes people cheerful when they watch him dancing, full of energy. He's success rate of landing quads and triple axels isn't very high, but he's the young skater that is the most likely candidate to become a future Japan's Ace.

He looks up to Yuuri, who's also from Kyushu and for his short program this season he chose "Lohengrin". His parents are medical doctors, and his older brother also attends a medical university.

Gave in and posted a chunk of my VERY unfinished Nishigori Triplets fic, because:

1. At this point I don’t think I’ll ever finish what is in my head

2. What I do have contains at least one scene I am VERY proud of and want to show off

3. It was meant to be episodic anyway. It’ll just be…more episodic

4. It’s sitting there haunting my incompletes and who knows, maybe I’ll get some inspiration to tidy the unfinished parts up

I’m slightly annoyed with myself as I try not to post incomplete things, but I THINK I can make what I put up feel complete enough that it doesn’t make me itch.

There is a murmuring as they cleaned after their performance two months later. Yuuri looked away from Yuuko who’d come to say hi with Takeshi and the triplets to the thinning crowd behind them. A few people had slowed to a stop. Others stared as they walked out. All focus seemed to be on a boy shorter than he was with blonde hair and piercing green eyes that seemed directed on him . Yuuri felt his heart stutter painfully at the way it seemed so familiar. This was the boy he’d seen sometimes in his dreams. He was sure of it. And for the first time since waking up in the rain, he knew they’d met before. They’d met the night he fell.

“That’s Kouki,” Yuuko whispered, awe in her voice. He turned to her in confusion. That was the name Minako had called Kou’s kirin, wasn’t it?

“The kirin?” Yuuri asked, just to be sure.

Yuuko looked at him and nodded almost violently. Then her eyes were drawn back to Kouki. The boy walked toward them with a purpose. He seemed angry for some reason. It terrified Yuuri to the core. But he stepped forward nonetheless. “Kouki?”

That had Kouki stop dead in his tracks, surprised. “You know my name?” He seemed unsure about his own question. It felt weird to Yuuri to hear him that way.

“Yeah,” Yuuri said. “A friend told me it. What are you doing here?”

“What am I doing here?” Kouki seemed incredibly angry now and Yuuri flinched. From the corner of his eye he saw the other troupe members send him a concerned look. He raised his hand to tell them he was okay. Viktor still walked over to stand next to him, which Yuuri appreciated. It helped him stand a little taller in the face of Kouki’s wrath. “What are you doing here, idiot? I’ve been looking everywhere to find you again only to find you within Kou’s borders performing !”

Yuuri frowned. “Because it’s where I belong.” Kouki scoffed but he refused to back down here. He was right . Though Kouki’s presence here in front of him and the feeling he’d seen him before told him he’d have to leave to wherever Kouki took him, he was right . The trees had led him to this group for a reason. Eventually, he stayed because it was where he wanted to be. In a world he didn’t remember, he found his place. He reached for Viktor’s hand and squeezed it. Viktor squeezed back. Narrowed green eyes followed the motions. “It is ,” he said firmly. “These people are my family. I love them.” Georgi let out a coo that had Minako rolling her eyes and Yuuri smiled.

“And you would do anything for this family?” Kouki asked.

“I would,” Yuuri said without hesitation.

“Fight youma for them? Die for them?” Kouki asked.

“I would,” Yuuri said. He almost had, once. With nothing but the certainty that he would die.

“And the rest of the people? The kingdom? You would care for this land, even in the muck and in the lowest positions?” Kouki asked.

Yuuri didn’t answer right away. This question felt bigger, and though Yuuri felt he knew in his heart what the answer would be, he wanted to think about it. He thought about what Minako had once told him about the heavens’ chosen ruler. About the trees’ tests. About the Nishigori family and the other people he had met. “I would,” Yuuri said and knew it was true. “I’ll do my best with the people beside me, if they’ll help me.”

“Of course, Yuuri,” Viktor said. Yuuri looked away from Kouki to smile at him. When he looked back, he straightened and met Kouki’s eyes.

“I’ll do my best at whatever you need me to,” Yuuri said. “Even if it means doing the dirtiest jobs or fighting. If it’ll help- If it’ll help the kingdom and the people, I’m willing to do it.”

Kouki tilted his head at that. Then he nodded to himself, a decision made. He bowed before Yuuri and Yuuri felt certain he could hear rain pounded against a metal roof despite the lack of rain and metal. “I swear never to desert my post before your throne. I promise to serve you and help you serve. I pledge my loyalty to you as long as you reign.”

There was silence in Yuuri’s ears. Like all the air had been ripped from the room. The first words were an echo of a memory that felt like a lifetime ago- but while then they’d been harsh and impatient, they sounded respectful now. Maybe Kouki had only then agreed with this decision. And if Kouki agreed, Yuuri tipped his head toward Kouki and this time responded without prompt. “I accept.”

So at the end of episode 12, Victor asks Yuuri for five World Championships (at least) before he retires, right?

So that would be five more years of skating, right? So what would they do together after Yuuri retires in five years? My head cannon (and many others I’m sure) is that they move back to Hasetsu together to coach and choreograph together, and this would be a perfectly reasonable choice because they have three built in students.

Because in five years, the Nishigori triplets will be 11 going on 12 and ready to prepare for the Junior Circuit! And what better way to bring tourism back to Hasetsu and establish a new skating club than to have two world/Olympic champions partner with their ice rink owning best friends?! (I love reading future fics and canon divergence AUs that explore this idea, so please send me your favs)
