When everyone looked at the girl screaming in surprise, Yasushi was calmly waiting for the young girl to scream.

“You were supposed to be in the hospital! You said you were staying with your mother! But I heard you went to a fight! Have you lost your mind?!”

The young girl was angry. But she was more afraid. She didn't know how she ran to the hospital after they attacked Yasushi. And that damn boy escaped from the hospital.

“Do you have any idea how worried I am, you idiot?!”

Yasushi hugged the girl in front of him tightly with the young girl's trembling voice. Although Y/n was suddenly startled and surprised by the arms surrounding her, she calmed down with the voice whispering in her ear.

The second he sees the man approach you in the dimly-lit club he’s already got the guy’s shirt gripped tightly in his fist. It doesn’t even matter if the guy was actually flirting with you or not. Ranmaru yanks the man closer so that they’re face-to-face, a shit-eating grin that you know all too well appearing on his face. Ranmaru likes to pretend like he doesn’t get jealous, but let anyone try to make a move on you and his actions will say differently. “That one’s off limits, though.”

Yasushi: “You looking for someone to take you out on a date? Go ahead, try those moves of yours out on me. I’m waiting.” Your boyfriend’s near-maniacal laughter seems to scare the guy shitless, because all prior confidence he’d had when hitting on you was now evaporated and replaced with utter fear. Yasushi casually steps between you and the guy, his grin only widening at the fearful reaction. Yasushi teasingly beckons the guy forward with a wave of the hand. There’s nothing you can say or do at this point to get Yasushi to stand down; Yasushi’s already taken this opportunity to scratch that itch for a fight. “What? Lost your nerve? Come on, don’t get me all excited for nothing.”

Fujin: “She’s got a boyfriend who knows how to fight, y’know?” Fujin slings an arm over your shoulders and eyes down the guy who just tried asking for your number, much to your own obvious discomfort. Fujin hadn’t left your side for more than two seconds when the creep decided to swoop in. Fujin trusts you implicitly, but he’s quick to jump in when anyone else might be trying to make a move on you. One thing about Fujin is that he doesn’t like people bothering his significant other. Fujin flicks his head in a gesture that dismisses the guy who currently looks like he’s regretting his decision in approaching you. “Get lost, before you really piss me off.”

Amagai: “You thought you should even try? You’re pathetic.” Another one who likes to pretend like he doesn’t get jealous, but boy does he. Amagai shoves his foot into the gut of the guy currently on the floor at his feet. The second you had casually mentioned the guy had tried hitting on you, Amagai was already sending Ryo on his way to bring the guy-in-question to him. This was all little known to you, however, because one thing Amagai wasn’t going to do was have his jealousy be known to you. Amagai squats down and looks the trembling guy in the eyes with a cold smile. “Didn’t anybody ever teach you not to touch things that aren’t yours?”

Kaiju Week in Review (January 14-20, 2024)

Ultraman Blazar's finale aired on Friday. It was a solid capper to what's easily the best entry in the Ultra Series since I was an undergrad, full of heart and pyrotechnics. There were a few major loose ends—Captain Gento is better at keeping secrets than most hosts—which I'm hoping the movie, due in late February, will address. If you're looking for a place to start with the long-running franchise, it would be one of my first recommendations. Great effects, great cast, tons of new kaiju, and a blend of novelty (lots of focus on the tensions between the defense team and the larger monster-fighting organization; a host who's in charge of said defense team) and returning to form (Blazar yowls plenty but is an Ultra of few words; the power-ups and goofy weapons are kept to a minimum). And even if you don't want to commit to a whole show, episode 22, focusing on a hapless salesman of kaiju insurance, is a must-see for any fan of the genre. There seem to be no worlds left to conquer at Tsuburaya for lead director Kiyotaka Taguchi, so as I've been saying since around 2015: Toho, are you paying attention?

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, the regraded black and white version of Godzilla Minus One, is coming to North American theaters for one week starting January 26. Toho's yanking both versions from theaters after February 1—puzzling considering that the film is likely going to be nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar tomorrow. Takashi Yamazaki led a Godzilla delegation to the Academy's visual effects "bakeoff", in which voters watch highlights from the ten shortlisted films and their VFX teams explain their work. IndieWire reports that Yamazaki's presentation drew the most applause, describing Minus One as the "potential frontrunner." The Hollywood Reporter likes its chances too. Nominations will be announced starting at 8:30 AM EST. The Creator seems to be its biggest competition.

Godzilla Minus One also recently cleared $50 million at the U.S. box office, in the process passing the first Demon Slayer as the highest-grossing Japanese-language film ever released in the U.S. Some outlets are reporting that it's the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released here, which isn't accurate; the English-dubbed Pokémon: The First Movie made almost $86 million back in 1999. (And I think it's plausible that something like Rodan or Godzilla vs. Megalon would be the champ if you figured out how much they grossed and adjusted for inflation.)

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #4 brought Godzilla and Tiamat to Atlantis, forcing Aquaman to release the Kraken to defend his city. Incredibly, this is the third Kraken associated with the Monsterverse, after Na Kika (called Kraken when it was introduced in the King of the Monsters novelization) and the main antagonist of the Skull Island cartoon. I'm guessing it's going to have a shorter lifespan than either of them though.

In other Godzilla comic news, IDW will be putting out another intriguing one-shot in May, titled Godzilla: Mechagodzilla 50th Anniversary. Past comics from the publisher have included multiple Mechagodzilla models, but this one seems to be going above and beyond. Rich Douek is writing; Andrew Lee Griffith is illustrating. The logline:

For 50 years, the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, has gone toe to toe with its robotic doppelgänger, Mechagodzilla! As an intrepid reporter profiles the history of Mechagodzilla and its creator before the launch of the newest model, he finds himself entangled in a much deeper conspiracy. A decades-spanning adventure celebrating the mechanical monster's milestone!

One of master kaiju illustrator Shinji Nishikawa's books will receive an English translation courtesy of Titan Books. Awkwardly titled Godzilla: The Encyclopedia of Godzilla, the Japanese edition included over 100 full-bodied illustrations of various Godzilla series kaiju and analyses of their designs (alongside plenty of Nishikawa's trademark chibis). I'm sold, suffice to say.

Ryo Momota, director of the short tokusatsu film Revive! Smile Rock Giant God, has put the whole thing on YouTube with English subtitles for your amusement. It posits that a real rock formation outside of Tamano City will come to life to help its citizens in their hour of need. Very low-budget.

Kaiju Brooklyn is a one-day con that began filling a longtime void for East Coast kaiju fans last year. Here's the first major piece of news about their June 1 event: they'll be screening The Return of Godzilla outdoors at day's end. Consider me highly tempted.

Kaiju United has a new, wide-ranging interview with Barry Goldberg, webmaster of the legendary Barry's Temple of Godzilla. That fan site was my first window into the wider world of Godzilla in the early 2000s, and it's only been updated a few times since, so I was pretty interested to read how its creator was doing. Don't get your hopes up for a revival: he's still a Godzilla fan (loved Minus One, Shin not so much), but has moved on to other things. Great insights from a Big Name Fan who stayed humble.

Hi Putsch! Thanks as always for all the Kalafina content (you are seriously the only reason I even know what our trio is up to post-disbandment!). I was wondering if you have Wakana's cover performance from her solo debut year in 2018 (that live was a TV appearance with Satoshi Takebe, where she also performed Toki wo Koeru You ni and Tsubasa) - I just can't remember what the name of the song is, and I don't have the live recording anymore. :( Do you happen to have it please?

I am pretty sure you mixed up the year? This sounds a lot like Wakana's appearance on the show "Bokura no Ongaku" but that happened in 2019 (which is actually the year of her solo debut since "Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni" wasn't released until February 2019).

the ultimate fallout 4 master verse post for my slice of life cast // * to be continuously updated, but hopefully spaced accordingly to be an easy read.

** right now i’m focusing on my most primary muses, but there are “holding” spots for when i have time to do the rest !! **

VERSE: FALLOUT 4, 2287, 200 YEARS AFTER THE "THIRD WORLD WAR” OR THE “GREAT WAR.”

GENERAL SETTING: BOSTON, THE COMMONWEALTH

“fnv, fo3, fo4 friendly. the cast is generally located in major areas or cities depending on threads. in the commonwealth, they are in far harbor by default. in fnv, they are in freeside.

akira works as a vendor at a general goods store with his cat, dango, and he often tends to the stray cats of the wastelands. yogi and kaito’s family work on any machines they can find, fixing them for various sources of income and trade. yogi is a good blacksmith. nana is a seamstress, able to patch clothes and armor.” - google doc for slice of life cast

** because of the circumstances of fallout 4, a major difference is that the entire slice of life cast are technically childhood friends, which directly contradicts their primary canon as meeting mostly in adulthood. in the wasteland, it is less common to leave family, and even less common to live alone away from resources and people. this means nana and akira have known each other their entire lives, as well as the rest of the cast, making them a bit closer than than they usually are, and thus their conflicts bigger and more interpersonally intense. **

unless specified in threads, the default location for this cast is far harbor, thus takes inspiration from there. most of the referenced stores that i have added for this cast into the location are on the docks / the mainland of far harbor, residents of “the island.” they are “harbormen.”

akira: the shopkeeper (general goods + trading), and the main character of “life sliced.” younger brother to botan, nana’s best friend, kaito’s unwitting rival. npc, potential companion

status: alive, npc, companion, romanceable option

known for picking up and taking care of stray cats, even if they are suspected to be synths by some of the more paranoid, but probably right, citizens of far harbor / the commonwealth. he has a cat named dango, who is often seen with akira at the shop he tends during his shifts.

in this universe, akira does live with his family. his parents are older, getting to an age where they are unable to work as hard as they used to, but are still diligent. botan carries the weight of the family, reiko married, but stayed closed with her husband and two children, and akira stayed within the community, too, along with his friends.

akira has a basic pipe pistol for protection, something he has rarely, if ever, used.

his favorite food is seasoned rabbit skewers, chicken thighs, and chicken noodle soup(s). his favorite soda is vim!, but he has tried a nuka cola. he likes vim quartz the best. he likes the game blast radius, but is currently missing some of the pieces.

akira is concerned about kasumi’s disappearance, but has not seen or heard from her.

to travel to the mainland, he pays yogi to take him to the nakano docks. this is not often, however.

companion quest: to get akira as a companion, the sole survivor and/or requesting person(s) must do a simple fetch-and-retrieve quest. find akira 20 cans of cat food to get him as a companion.

synths: akira is ambivalent to synths, as well as to captain avery’s leadership. while he is far harbor aligned, he wishes all fighting and conflict would cease. he does not know if he’s met any synths himself, hearing mostly rumors, including that even animals can be synths. kaito thinks akira is a synth, but akira has no synth components on him if killed.

perks: animal friend, wasteland whisperer, cap collector

botan: a medic, trained in human and (most) animal anatomy and treatment. primarily works on humans, but is able to perform on cattle and domestic pets. older brother to akira.

status: alive, npc, companion, romanceable option

botan is the “prodigal son” of the fujita family. he is the oldest of three children — botan, reiko, and akira — and is an uncle to reiko’s children, who he is very close to, albeit very busy. he is often found tending to the wounded, infected, and ailed, including animals, though his primary focus is people-oriented. he is a “doctor” of the wasteland. is an expert at making stimpaks.

he uses a customized mister orderly robot that was programmed by yogi. his mister orderly is referred to as a “order.”

botan actively carries a snubnose .44 pistol and a switchblade.

his favorite food is a vegetable stew with poached angler meat. his favorite brand of vim is the captain’s blend.

he considers his services available 24/7, assigning himself to an “on-call” position. he can be utilized as a medic at any hour.

botan is perplexed by kasumi’s disappearance, but has not seen or heard from her.

to travel to the mainland, he pays yogi to take him to the nakano docks. from there, he travels to destinations such as diamond city or goodneighbor, primarily for supplies. however, due to his schedule, you would be more opt to see botan in the mainland as a companion. he does not leave far harbor often.

companion quest: tba

synths: botan does not care if someone is a synth or not - he feels medically obligated under a moral code of being a doctor that he is required to help anyone that needs help. he finds captain avery’s attempts commendable, if not a bit short-sighted, and her moral superiority tends to get in the way of his personal needs as a medic. other than that, he is complacent to the day-to-day, instead focused on his work, which he deems more important than his involvement in politics. if killed, botan will not have any synth components on him.

perks: medic (expert), chemist*, awareness, animal friend, getting close to the “nuclear physicist” perk, local leader.

* botan’s perks are based around science and medicine

nana: seamstress for garments and armor for a small family business called “needle & thread.” akira’s best friend, kaito’s ex-girlfriend. npc, potential companion.

status: alive, npc, companion, romanceable option

nana works primarily in her shop, mending clothes and armor for locals and newcomers. she is particularly good with a needle, even stitching a few wounds here and there. she is on the cusp of being an amateur medic in that regard, but is a bit squeamish.

nana employs the help of a miss nanny robot that was gifted to her by yogi, and is customized to assist with general chores, as well as nana’s duties as a seamstress. nana considers this robot her friend, and treats her kindly. she named her miss nanny “mimi.” mimi is equipped to battle and protect nana with the upgrades yogi installed, including a fourth “leg” appendage, which has a standard circular sawblade, as well as a flamethrower module. her other appendages are equipped with clamping and cutting tools to assist nana with work. on her own, nana carries a pocketknife for protection.

nana likes hubflowers, something kaito used to gift her often.

her favorite foods are are angler meat stews (family recipe), mirelurk jellies, and steamed black bloodleaves with lure weeds. her favorite vim is vim refresh.

nana is stressed about kasumi’s disappearance, but has not seen or heard from her.

to travel to the mainland, she pays yogi to take him to the nakano docks. she used to visit kasumi’s family, as her mother could be considered a family friend.

companion quest: tba

synths: nana doesn’t know much about synths, just the rumors that come from the mainland and swirl around the harbor. from rumor alone, she is scared of what she hears, but tends to keep her opinions to herself. she does not know if she has met a synth. in reality, she has, as there are active synth replicants in far harbor itself. she wants conflicts with the children of atom and acadia to stop, but honestly couldn’t tell you much about either side in comparison to far harbor. if killed, nana’s body will reveal no synth components.

perks: fortune finder, scrounger, medic (basic), “quick hands” (not for combat).

kaito: robotics expert, a “mechanic” of the wasteland, family business. younger brother of yogi, nana’s ex-boyfriend, akira’s self-proclaimed rival. npc, potential companion.

status: alive, npc, companion, romanceable option

the active, boisterous younger brother of the cool, collected nishikawa yogi. he is a skilled “mechanic,” able to fix most machines he comes across. he has an interest in robotics, following his family’s mechanical line of work. he follows yogi’s command, guide, and lead, along with his two twin brothers, junpei and junichi (both older than kaito).

they run a family business, fixing anything mechanical, and kaito has a special interest in fixing weaponry, becoming quite skilled at gun modification, ammo scrounging, and general upgrades to weapons.

kaito has a customized 10mm pistol. he actively carries a combat knife for additional protection.

his favorite food is grilled hermit crab with a side of steamed lure weeds. he is the least picky eater, eating almost anything on most menus, including raw fog crawler meat. his favorite soda is basic vim, but he does like nuka cola and nuka cola cherry, all of which he uses as chasers and mixers.

kaito is puzzled by kasumi’s disappearance, but has not seen or heard from her.

when going to the mainland, it is usually with yogi. he has been known to take the boat on his own, however, or pay others to take him. his favorite place to visit is goodneighbor, but he scrounges around the commonwealth, especially at different factories that worked on cars, robots, boats, etc. he does not like diamond city.

companion quest: tba

synths: kaito is very afraid of synths, borderline paranoid. he thinks akira might be a synth. he is very skeptical of any newcomer, be it from the mainland or the island. if mortally wounded, kaito’s body contains no synth components.

perks: idiot savant, pickpocket, locksmith (advanced, now most expert locks), demolition, bloody mess.

yogi: robotics prodigy, a “mechanic” of the wasteland, family business. older brother of kaito. npc, potential companion.

status: alive, npc, companion, romanceable option

the eldest child of the nishikawa family, and now considered a leader. yogi is skilled at robotics, able to fix most machines, and has a special interest in chemistry. in his free time, he tries to make chems that are more beneficial than harmful, and can make amateur stimpaks. he regularly makes robotic repair kits, and can customize robots.

he has a few smaller eyebot models that follow him around, some that are for aesthetics such as playing the radio or shining light, and others more useful, such as to gather for scrap and materials.

yogi also employs a mister handy named spike.

his favorite food is the captain’s feast with a side of gulper innards and grilled lure weeds. his favorite vim is the captain’s blend.

yogi travels the most frequently out of the group. in far harbor, he is the one out of the cast that has been outside of far harbor the most, primarily to diamond city and goodneighbor. the nishikawa family have their own functioning fishing boat. yogi sometimes will give rides to the mainland. he uses the nakano settlement to dock.

yogi is concerned about kasumi’s disappearance, but has not seen or heard from her.

when going to the mainland, like kaito, he typically scrounges at the most profitable areas for mechanical parts. car, boat, and robotics factories are usually targets of interest. he also visits cities such as diamond city and goodneighbor for drink and trade. he makes additional caps from the mainland by selling “far harbor” specific items, such as decorative pieces, as well as parts for fixing boats.

yogi is partially responsible for a boat resurgence, finding lots of abandoned fishing and river boats, and other crafts along the shores of the commonwealth. he will also try to make money by fixing machines, robots, and other pieces of tech operable to him for citizens of the commonwealth. he has visited graygarden several times, offering to help give the robots there “tune ups.” yogi gains main of his “experience points” in the mainland, helping him hone his craft(s), while also learning new subjects, allowing him to extrapolate on his “perks” and interests.

yogi can hack expert terminals.

yogi is in conflict with the rust devils, whether or not he is in far harbor.

companion quest: find five mechanical components yogi needs to fix the engine of his family’s fishing boat. when completed, he will become an active companion option.

synths: yogi is most levelheaded about synths, seeming not to care if they co-exist in far harbor, and he has no obvious problems with acadia. he is suspicious of the children of atom amidst the narrative conflict. if killed, it will be revealed the yogi was a synth, as synth components are located on his body post-mortem. he was replaced by the institute directly during one of his mainland voyages, sent to far harbor to reside with the locals (and other synths). he does not know he is a synth. yogi feels entirely “human” or “himself.”

perks: fortune finder, scrounger, four leaf clover*, scrapper, locksmith (master locks), demolition, lady killer, local leader.

* yogi’s perks base around the luck stat, which he is high in (his odds are typically 75/30 or 80/20 in his favor), as well as science and robotics-based perks, scrapping, etc.
