Background: Born and raised in Beacon Hills, Marlow has halways been the baby of the bunch - whether that was at home or in her friend group. She was always in need of a little more attention due to her severe panic attacks and BPD. As a child, she was quiet and withdrawn, using her brother’s outspoken demeanor as a shield whenever she felt she needed to. Marlow’s mother Claudia died when she was seven, prompting the little girl to hide her true emotions from everyone. She toughens up and spends more time with her best friend Mason Hewitt, whom she met in kindergarten. When the two are out on a camping trip with Mason’s family, ten-year-old Marlow comes across a scary man with red glowing eyes. He bites her and suddenly her whole life is turned upside down. The night after her first full moon, she wakes up in the ruins of the Hale house, Derek and Laura Hale there to explain the ropes of being a shapeshifter. After Derek leaves town and Laura is murdered by Peter Hale, thirteen-year-old Marlow is left to fend for herself, continuing to hide her new identity from her loved ones. Then her brothers best friend Scott McCall is turned into a werewolf and she tries to help him navigate his new normal while keeping her own predicament under wraps. She is relegated to research duty, having Mason help her under the guise of making up a story. Nix-Hounds

"My hosts were as welcoming as they could have been, but when someone nicked their finger by accident, they had to confine their pet Nixie into the shed overnight for everyone's safety. Cute fellow otherwise." - Seeks-For-Knowledge

Nix-Hounds are insectoid quadrupedal creatures native to Morrowind. They're a common sight on the road, and are often kept as pets. Their distinctive trait is their long proboscis, which they use to drain their prey of bodily fluids. Their saliva is corrosive, and if it comes in contact with skin, it might from a permanent bond with it. Nix-Hounds travel in packs, and an attack from a pack of fully grown Nix-Hounds can be dangerous. As pets, they are known to be affectionate, attentive and faithful to their owners, and are employed as trackers, watch hounds and war dogs.

Eating habits When a Nix-Hound emerges from its chrysalis, they emerge hungry, and can drain at least four similarly sized creatures per day. They feed on creatures such as baby guars, goats, kwama pupae and ash hoppers, but they might also show interest in draining small children and pets as well, so if you do have a Nix-Hound pet, you should keep a close eye on them, especially when they're young and curious.

Grooming Nix-Hounds are very clean creatures, which is a relief for pet owners. A Nix-Hound tends to spend hours cleaning itself, scraping and polishing its facial chitin and antennae with its nimble pedipalps. However, they aren't flexible enough to easily clean their abdomen and thorax. For a pet owner, it is recommended to clean their nix-hound with an oiled rag once every two weeks. Before this procedure, it is in the owner's best interests to make sure they know where a nix-hound's sensory seta and abdominal glands are, as Nix-Hounds have been known to turn aggressive if touched in the wrong place. If this does happen, giving the nix-hound a few days and a dozen buckets of meat-fluid should calm it down again.

Current state They hail from the isle of Morrowind, but since the Red Year gave a strong incentive to migrate, they have become common in Solstheim.

Traveler's advice: If you travel in the wilderness of Morrowind and hear a noise similar to a frustrated grown man uttering "augh," it is a wounded Nix-Hound. I recommend staying away, as its possible pack is likely not far.

Madame Commander is asleep, for now. She will be calm when she awakes, and then slowly the manic state will take her again, until she exhausts and sleeps again. And so I tend to her atelier while she rests, that it will be fully available for her when she wakes.

I enjoy my work with her, but I find myself worried. When she gets excited, she begins to glow brightly, the transcendent power burning within her, but I am worried. Does it burn from within her, or is it her herself that burns? I feel that she is working not out of desire, but almost a need, one that I cannot name. And there is an undercurrent of anxiety that I feel from her, threading through all that she does.

I wish, not for the first time, that I knew more of my kin. I would like their advice.

Absent that, my purpose is to advise and assist the Madam Commander to see her goals realised, and so I continue to do so.

Zoissette had a decision to make, and she was not at all certain she was ready to do so.

She frowned at the data she had collected. Not far from her where her hand rested sat two mirror apples, both half-eaten, with observation notes next to them. One had stayed here, one had travelled through the aperture she had opened in the negative energy field, and both were fine. Normal. The traveller had misted aether off its form when it had returned and had been cold to the touch, but was none the worse for the trip.

However, apples do not speak of their experiences, and the data did not tell her what she wanted to know.

Not so far from the apples rested a topaz, recently chilled. She had been reluctant to send a carbuncle through to the rift. To be certain, while carbuncles looked much like creatures of flesh and blood, there were a great many differences between them. For starters, they could survive and simply be resummoned back from the sort of misadventure that would spell the ultimate and final end for a creature born of body instead of aether.

However, they were a kind of life, and Zoissette felt that precious enough. Precautions had been taken, and the carbuncle had been made aware of the risk. At least, as aware as a creature such as itself could be made. She lacked Synnove’s or even Riven’s touch for summoning, and her carbuncle was closer to ‘clever’ than it was to ‘sentient’.

But it had gone and come back again. It had been disoriented upon arriving back, and seemed confused before it had eagerly jumped into her arms, nudging its nose in her face and swishing its tails excitedly. That it was in good condition was reassuring.

Less reassuring was that it did not seem fully aware of what had transpired. It had maintained a thin aetheric condition to her codex while it had traversed the rift, but what had come back was scrambled runes and glyphs, static and uncertainty, and an absolute mess of what seemed to be less ‘data’ and more ‘random noise’.

She had checked it over, and once she was certain it was okay, she had dismissed it, allowing its energies to return to the aetherial sea.

And then there was Lavender.

Zoissette had just flat refused to let her go at first. There were too many unknowns, too much risk. She was more cautious than Y’shtola, who had decided that a few trips made by a nixie was good enough to prove the work. The nixie had come back corrupted, a problem they had a ready solution to, but it had also come back sound.

The carbuncle had been confused, and disoriented from its journey, and that bothered Zoissette.

Having an argument with Lavender was both interesting and vexing. The little fairy could not talk, and so communicated through flashing glyphs and runes on the pages of the codex, drawing symbols and making pictures, and body language that had gotten rather pointed. However, at last, they had managed to reach a compromise.

Back when the initial work was being done to create the anima that would ultimately become Lavender, Ardashir had fashioned a mammet-esque body for her to inhabit, with Lavender’s original soulstone nestled low in its belly. Lavender could inhabit it in whole or in part, and Zoissette decided that she was, in fact, willing to risk the small device.

If worse came to worse, she could pull Lavender back to either the scholar soul stone or the soul stone nestled in her codex, and leave the mammet abandoned to the rift.

Such did not come to pass. And unlike the carbuncle, Zoissette could more directly observe through it, but that turned out to be of little help. The images that came back as she journeyed where hopeless messes of indecipherable color, the runes and glyphs that Lavender used to communicate spilling by on the pages of her codex so fast that she could not decipher them. And the empathic link they shared saturated quickly, leaving Zoissette bewildered more than anything at the strange mix of feelings coming back.

The body that returned was cold, its joints brittle, but Lavender was quick to manifest outside of it. She was unable to communicate at first, save for a single image which she sent to the enchantments in Zoissette’s glasses.

The dark sky of the thirteenth. The black orbs that were native to the skies in that place, with the unsettling purple and red miasma that permeated its atmosphere.

Lavender had made it, and returned safe. And she recovered quickly enough, returning to her usual demeanor, but unable to fully communicate what had happened in the intervening time.

And now Zoissette was facing that decision she had to make.

She looked over the data that had been gathered. It was all neat and orderly. Multiple things had been passed through to the rift and back safe enough by all accounts.

She could, as well.

But should she.

The disposition of both the carbuncle and Lavender bothered her. They were more aether than mass, and so what had happened to them may be more detrimental to a being such as herself, dissimilar in many ways. She wished desperately to be able to determine what had happened to them, but the only good way to do so would be to transition to the void herself.

And another discrepancy had come to her notice. The containment field and energies fluxed, waxed and waned as mass passed through, and for many of the experiments, she had determined a way to measure an object’s mass through the changes. Heavier things tended to have larger displacement energies, which was logical and reasonable. Nothing came anywhere near to being a problem to threaten the containment field.

The problem was, again, with the carbuncle and Lavender. The carbuncle was by far the more physically massive of the two, intended as it was for actual physical combat. Lavender was meant to watch, to learn, to apply tactics, to deliver magicks, and to fly, but not ever to actually physically engage with an opponent. The carbuncle on the other hand was very much capable of doing so, both with magical acumen and with the rather less elegant method of simply tackling opponents, leaping upon them, and applying teeth as the situation warranted.

So in theory, the displacement of the carbuncle should have been larger than that of Lavender.

In actuality, it seemed Lavender was larger than the carbuncle.

Much, much larger.

And for that matter, the carbuncle was larger than it should have been too, for how much it weighed. For every other object Zoissette had passed through the negative energy field and into the rift, she could reliably match its mass to its displacement and vice versa. The carbuncle, however, had a larger displacement than its mass would indicate.

And again, Lavender more so.

She frowned, and wondered where the discrepancy came from.

However, nothing came close to stressing the containment field. She quickly did the math for a worst case estimate based on the numbers she saw for Lavender, compared it to the containment field’s strength and capabilities, scaled it up for herself, then multiplied that number by three.

Plenty of margin.

Still concerning.

Lavender flitted to her shoulder and landed, and she could feel a questioning feeling come from the little familiar. She reached up a finger to her, and gently touched Lavender’s wing, trying to be reassuring. With her other hand, she tapped the rim of her glasses, activating an enchantment that showed her the time.

It was evening, now. She had begun her experiments quite early in the morning.

She got up, Lavender taking to the air, and decided to head over to Gage Acquisitions’ headquarters. There she could perhaps review her notes, get some dinner, and get a good night’s rest.

Surely she would be better able to make a decision in the morning.

What is Red Revenge?

Basically, it's a WW2 superhero story that actually goes into alternate history instead of pretending modern day would be unchanged from the real world after all these events and despite all these supernatural and superscientific elements.

I can't think of anything to compare it to. Über? The Specialists? There is also some inspiration from Inglourious Basterds. But Red Revenge is not as gory as Über or Basterds, the aforementioned inspiration i don't mean Tarantino's voyeuristic gore. Also nobody is as OP as Über's supersoldiers. Still, it's obviously very dark.

It's supposed to become a webcomic eventually. I've seen writing advice that tells you to make incorrect quotes, playlists, moodboards, etc. about your characters to get a hang of them, which is what i'm doing on this blog. I'm also still workign on the character designs. Researching armies, history, involved real people, and the weather so your alternste history that spans over a decade is realistic is a lot of work and takes a really long time (even withiut indecisiveness and procastination). While the unrealistic elements are the point of divergence, i want the events unfolding from their presence (and other interference) to be realistic and make sense. I need to do other stuff besides research every once in a while too.

Tom Handschin/Carmine Avenger is the main character, a young german antifascist whose adoptive father Hans Leonhardt is murdered by the nazis in 1940 when they're found in Paris. Tom becomes sort of a superhero, though he's propably more similiar to the pulp characters The Shadow and The Spider. Like them, he doesn't have any superpowers. He's also autistic and gay ace, like me. I might change his name to Red Avenger.

Like The Shadow, Tom has a bunch of other people working for him. The most developed ones, whom i've already mentioned on this blog, are Emese Nacht/Pine, Horst Dießl/Crow, and Arthur Tangemann/Star. They all have single-word codenames that are supposed to look like legit surnames.

Sascha Schwinghammer, Basti Brandt, and Karl Barbier are Hans' friends and compatriots who are alive (at least for the time being), Renate Brandt is Basti's wife and Hannah Barbier is Karl's wife (Hannah, Karl, and Sascha are secretly all together). Hans, Sascha, Basti, and Karl are all disabled WWI veterans, they met during WWI, remained in contact, and opposed the nazis together.

Detlev Herr is Tom's former friend from the orphanage and a current frenemy. The frenemy thing is because Detlev joined the communist party in the late 1920s and believed KPD's narrative that all non-KPD leftists are evil. And since Tom is an anti-USSR and anti-KPD socialist...

The other superheroes of Red Revenge, besides Tom, are the generically superhuman Louisa Kinge/The Catalyst, pretty low-level psychic dhampir Miyako Hasuike/Wisteria Woman, the hydrokinetic and potential nixie Tadpole, the vampire Noah Ashford/Grey Howler, and generically superhuman Orville Holm/Freedom Fighter.

The main villains of Red Revenge are, obviously, a group of nazi supervillains; their leader The Lightbearer, the robot soldier Living Inferno, speedster Falk Bernhardt Rot/Thunderlight, telekinetic Adele Siemon/The Maiden, and hydrokinetic maybe-nixie/human hybrid Romano Marchegiano, generically superhuman Byron Ashford, and sniper Jan Messer who i don't have codename ideas for yet. The Lightbearer's girlfriends Gretchen Wagner and Kreszentia Glasner might also get mentioned. I've already decided how and when all these people die, at least tentatively.

(Yes, Noah and Byron are related. There's a whole british upper class family drama with them)

(Tadpole and Marchegiano are not related. Neither are Miyako and Noah)

Headcanons (are they headcanons if they’re true? idk) about Beatrix, Benedict, Breaker, and Ewan because I love my little chaotic family:

1. Breaker pretends to be Beatrix’s driver while she attends Kingrose School because he can’t pretend to be her father, it might kill him if he did (he’s angsty and doesn’t like to admit he sees her as a daughter)

2. Unlike Breaker, Ewan actually lets Benedict call him “dad”, though it’s rare for him to do so. He’s also a PI in the magical world so he can keep track of all the things others would overlook (i.e. Kells)

3. People do actually confuse Ewan, Breaker, and the twins for a family because the twins bear a resemblance to Breaker and they both have mannerisms that reflect both of their godfathers

4. Ewan has nicknames for Beatrix and Benedict. Benedict is “Little Lion” (because the Solberg family sigil is a black lion and a white lion) and Beatrix is “Lucky/Unlucky Kitten” (because she loves black cats and sees them as lucky instead of unlucky), but calls them both “cub”/“lion cub” and “little cub”

5. Breaker is multilingual and helped to instill Benedict’s love of languages, particularly Latin

6. Ewan was the one to originally teach Beatrix how to defend herself using throwing knives, giving her the advice to always keep one on her at all times, something that she has done ever since

7. Beatrix is a talented soccer player, something Ewan and Kells played together during their time at school and taught Beatrix to play in her childhood (though she didn’t play on a team until she was 12)

8. Ewan still views Beatrix as a little girl but views Benedict as an adult. This is a result of watching Benedict grow up more than Beatrix

9. Both Ewan and Breaker feel guilty about something when it comes to each other. Breaker feels guilty for introducing Ewan to Kells in the first place because he wouldn’t be in this position if they had never met. Ewan feels guilty for letting Kells abuse Breaker for as long as he did, he witnessed what was happening but never said a word in fear of both parties’ reactions

10. Breaker and Ewan originally became friends because they were both bullied at Kingrose for their blood status. Breaker because he’s half Water Witch and half Nixie (a water based faerie) was the most powerful water element students and was bullied for having an “extra helper”, i.e. having two parents with similar powers. Ewan was bullied for being half Witcher (witch-shapeshifter hybrids that are looked down for being less powerful because they are believed to only be able to shapeshift) on his mother’s side while his father is a human . They bonded over this and Breaker eventually introduced him to Kells

11. Breaker doesn’t let Beatrix get too close to him, always keeping her at arms length because he’s afraid that he’ll let her in and she’ll become what he fears she will. He knows she’s a powerful girl and he’s afraid that she’ll become mad with it, just like Kells did

12. Ewan fully accepts that Breaker would probably kill him if they reunited and his plan wasn’t to fight back because he knows he isn’t a match for Breaker in this instance, he may be physically bigger but he relies on his size rather than fighting technique, whereas Breaker is the opposite. He also is unable to hurt Breaker physically due to a vow he made to himself years ago, where he wouldn’t Breaker in the ways Kells did (though he did break that vow when he left)

13. As long as the twins are apart, Breaker and Ewan can’t be together. Their loyalty to their godchildren trumps any feelings that they may have towards each other now and forever. It’s a hard truth but they accepted it a long time ago

Creating a health display

Initially, following my research, I elected to go for nixie tubes first [primarily using the below image]

this was my first draft which took about 5, 10 minutes. I don't dislike it but I ought to add more of the motifs I use in my characters and environment

minor changes added, even better. I might add these as sprites in a 3D environment with a warm light behind.

After I was happy with my design, I had to draw numbers 0-9 to create the display. It was only when I got to 5 that I realised I hadn't standardised a sprite size and the number resolutions would be all over the place. I immediately opened a new tab and redrew them in similar sizes as to keep consistency

Even this didn't fix my problems, however. As the 1 was really thin, it got stretched way too much when displayed. As a result, I just redrew it wider - it would have been much easier than adding a node to set the sprite size only when it is a 1.

Initially, my code didn't work. I only got error messages and crashes.

However, after retrying much later, I copied the below advice and used the same tutorial I'd referenced in my card draw attack. This allowed me to remake how I set the icon representing health.

After many left-right mixups, I eventually managed to get the system working. The final result is something I'm incredibly proud of, as it is miles better than my previous attempts.

I later decided to move the nixxie tubes to the top of the screen and increase their size so I better used the screen space and didn't crowd the lower third of the screen

For whatever reason, the enemy's health display didn't work. I tried adding the event begin play node - this fixed my previous problem of it displaying the debug image, but now it was just a white rectangle. Given that the code in the widget was identical between all nixxie tubes, it had to be a problem in the enemy.

Eventually I realised - the white rectangle was due to the computer not being able to find a reference to something. I'd though it was to the textures, but what if it was to the player, so the computer couldn't get the health widget.

no such luck.

BUT THIS WORKED????

I think the enemy wasn't able to get a reference to the player, but the health widget hadn't been created yet, so it couldn't get a reference to that either. By adding a tiny delay, it gave the computer enough time to create the health widget

A vaguely 19th century set that contains pretty much everything you'd need to open up shop as an Apothecary/Pharmacy/Chemist. With many thanks to KidInTheNight for all their cheerleading, decimating the polycounts of meshes, making the arsenic functional and resizing the bottle, and having amazing ideas on how to make parts of this set functional! I present to you a mixture of new meshes and recolours.

- Surrealisim's Potion Bottles: 6 different bottles, in all the liquid colours.

- Tonic Water: Veronichka's deco Absinthe bottle, recolored in the glass colours.

- Victorian Tools: 6 victorian tool meshes, all with one colour each.

- Bonesaw: Removed from a TSM conversion and made deco by me.

- Bandages: 3 Recolours of a Kativip mesh.

- Bedpan: 1 recolour of a kativip mesh.

- Scales: Avenida's scales in yeti metals.

- Bath Chair: Made from parts by WFS and I can't remember where the bike parts are from sorry :( It is a functional recliner only.
