Why do you think Roier and Missa are easiest to understand? I found the same thing as someone who's just learning Spanish, and I wasnt sure if it was because I've watched so much Roier content that it influenced my ability to understand him, or if there's a deeper reason due to some regional accent differences being easier for non-native speakers to understand. I'm curious about your thoughts since you have really good insights into linguistics, but ignore this if it's too much for tumblr lol!

neither of them talk super fast, and imo their accents are fairly easy to understand-- for me, missa is easy to understand bc he's from the north and that region has accents i'm more familiar with, and roier's accent is somewhat neutral although obviously still clearly mexican and he uses a lot of slang. i think that also helps-- roier uses a lot of the same vocab, so if you're still learning spanish, you can pick up that slang and then understand quite a bit of what he's saying because he swears literally five times in a single sentence. they both speak pretty clearly and, additionally, i think most non-native spanish speakers, especially U.S. americans, are most familiar with mexican spanish rather than other dialects. so that's why someone like rubius or spreen is harder for nonnative speakers to understand, unless they're more familiar with spanish or argentine dialects specifically.

for me it's hard to parse bc i understand most of what they all say regardless since i've spoken spanish for so long, but i think rivers is just difficult because she speaks very fast. mariana is pretty easily to understand as well, there's just less for me to say about him tbh idr where he's from and i don't really have a hard time understanding him, i just watch him less than anyone else really.

for quackity, his accent is more noticeable, and his spanish is a little weirder, in that he is so bilingual and if you're not familiar with that way of speaking it can be hard to pick up what he's saying sometimes. this is partially why i wish there were a few more latino americans on the server so people get more familiar with that type of bilinguality-- i think quackity is in a unique position that he doesn't full share with other server members (aside from mouse, in that she is also a latino who lives in the states, although from a content perspective she doesn't do the same kind of bilingual split that q does nor does she stream in spanish), and i would be interested to see more of that kind of diasporic latino experience on the server. that's me rambling and doesn't have to do with accents i've just been thinking about it for a while and i think it would be cool. but yeah q phrases things funny sometimes because he's thinking of the english way of saying something or vice versa, and he is by far one of the most fluently bilingual members of the server, so it's an interesting dynamic for people watching him who aren't super familiar with spanish nor the kinds of calques and things that end up happening with bilingual speakers.

anyway back to your actual questions i do also think exposure does tip the scales lol most of us watch more roier than anyone else and esp for people just learning spanish, you're gonna understand him better than anyone else because of that. which is nice in some ways bc you learn a lot of slang but also if you're going to speak spanish in any kind of non-casual setting please do not talk like roier he is a fucking crazy person who swears so much it's actually unreal

Hello child,

As I'm sure you can imagine, there is no unique answer to this. Not only because how quickly you'll become fluent will depend on your personality, learning style, tolerance to frustration, and the amount of free time you have and are willing to spend working on it, but also because fluency is a blurry concept, especially for romance languages since they're so dynamic and different from what you find in textbooks.

Starting from scratch, if you work half an hour a day, use the right tools, know how to alternate between activities, and learn things in the right order, I think you can get to about B1 in a year and B2 in two - which doesn't seem like much of a difference, but it's actually the biggest one when learning a language in my opinion.

What do I mean:

Half an hour a day: you need things to stick, so ten minutes wouldn't cut it, but I doubt more would be, first, realistic, because you'll have other things to worry about, sometimes you'll be sick, busy or on vacation, and second, sustainable: if you turn the experience into a burden, you'll be consistent for a few days, weeks, months, take one day off, and avoid your notes for the next eight months because you've stressed yourself out too much.

Use the right tools: my favourite resources are le Wiktionnaire (etymology is a good friend), Wordreference, Lenouvelobs and Deepl.

Alternate between activities: getting a grammar book and reading one page a day will make you miserable and steal your motivation. On day one, you can learn articles and practice, on day two, read a Petit ours brun book with the help of Deepl, on day three learn how to pronounce numbers on Youtube... One tip: start the day by reviewing what you did the day before.

Learn things in the right order: my method with beginners is typically to focus on reading and overlook writing and pronunciation for a while so that they can get a good understanding of our syntax, memorise prepositions, tell tenses apart, etc. If on day one, you decide to watch a dubbed version of Friends or Harry Potter, it will be the equivalent of getting a firearm, shooting yourself in the foot and wondering why it's not helping you run a marathon.

I've been tutoring for almost three years so I'll add this: your worst enemy will be your ego. I've heard many times people six months into their journey complain that they speak like a six-year-old without realising that it took the six-year-old six years.

It will be difficult, particularly if your first language is not romance: sometimes you'll have strokes (I have nearly fluent students who sometimes forget that adjectives can need to be pluralized or casually write il mangé convinced it's imperfect), sometimes you'll try to translate English even though it's generally not an available option, sometimes you'll blank over a basic word and rage.

It's fine. It's all fine. Trust the process.

Oh yes plenty. After he came into power he was subjected to a number of Battle Royales as others tried to kill him off for exactly that. He only gets the odd challenge nowadays since it’s been proven he is less likely to die than people initially thought.

Long answer: it depends on how much of a vested interest Rire has in someone and what he might decide he wants from them. And since Rire can blend in with humans, yes there are many people over the years who may have interacted with him a bit and have no idea he is a demon.

Sounds like in HellTaker most of the demons are of one species/race :) In my lore there’s a bunch of different species/races so they have some different physical characteristics and power sets etc from each other. Here’s some of them (most of these are not coloured fully btw):

It’s soft and silky, and thick. Sometimes he uses product (maybe to keep his hair looking a certain way at long Sector meetings or events or whatever) but otherwise it’s usually natural.

HH Rire more so than BP Rire. Though BP Rire’s usage of “little + [descriptor]” does straddle that fine line of either being a pet name or just a descriptor, and he does that a lot.

Oh it’s not that strange don’t worry, i actually often get questions like this |D From my FAQ:

CAN RIRE FEEL LOVE? I don’t know if you could classify what he feels as “love” in the same definition we are used to…

And from an answer to a similar q a while back:

Perhaps he may become fond of someone because they really maintain his interest and then he may become possessive; this isn’t necessarily a positive thing but you can take that how you want haha.

I have been feeling really insecure about my art for....a while now. Months, at least. I think the transition to art school was a big part of that. You know that thing where people who were used to being the smartest/most academically successful student in their class/school go to college and are suddenly surrounded by people who were all the smartest kid at their school, and have a crisis about not being exceptional anymore? Turns out that same thing can happen with artists. It's hard not to compare yourself. And I've been feeling like it's been so long since I got to make the kind of art i want to be making, and made it well.

Fortunately, this semester I've gotten some assignments that give me a little more freedom, and also some opportunities to do some illustration work, and I'm working on several things I'm really excited about right now! I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm dragging myself out of the self-pity hole. (unfortunately all of these projects are on tight deadlines and I'm also fighting off burnout with a shovel rn)

Hmmmm...most stuff I don't like I manage to filter out based on tags and summaries. I think a fic that's trying to be funny, but doing it in a way that feels out of character or just isn't my brand of humor, is a pretty immediate nope for me. Likewise if it dips into intense social awkwardness. I have a painfully strong sense of secondhand embarrassment and I'm not putting myself through that XD

Marisha explicitly said regression when asked what FCG see's at a surface glance of Laudna's thoughts. Do you think that regression played a part in her decision to cast find familiar on Pate? While she has all of these people now that care, he was the first "friend" she had to rely on to get her through. Aside from the hilarity of Matt having to play this inappropriate dead rat/bird combo, what kind of role do you think he'll have in Laudna's recovery this time?

Anon I'd like to apologize for the delay but also Big Brain Hours, because of my lateness Marisha talked a bit about Laudna's regression on 4SD and explicitly said she feels like it was a "reset"/revert so we get to factor that in yaaaayyyyyyyyyy.

First, to your initial question- I absolutely think it played a part, and IMO it's equal parts devastating and heartwarming. Laudna was launched back into a nightmarish replica of her worst experiences, moments that she had already overcome and battled her way out from and yet had been ensnared in again. Of course she would fall back on old haunts, and old comforts. Of course, with echoes of these lovely friends in her mind, she'd bring back Paté, but maybe a bit different, something extra sewn into him.

But still him, because when everything was awful and dark and lonely, he was a friend. And for a little bit, it was again, and- there he was again.

But alive. But different.

That in mind, alongside Marisha's comments about a "reset" and Laudna "reverting a bit", my guesses for the future are best summed up as: Familiar, but not identical. Because that feels like the prominent theme.

When plunged back into a recreation of awful depths, she made Paté again, and he's still crass and reliable and a friend, but he's also flying, he's talking on his own, he's got all of their magic as well as hers in him too. Laudna is fresh off of something terrible, and I'm sure in some ways it feels horrifically like being back at square one. Like history repeating.

But it's not. Not exactly the same as before. And that has to be both a comfort and a terror. The things that were awful are not guaranteed to repeat. Neither is the stability of your old habits. Some things will be the same. Some things won't.

I think there will be plenty of times where he is a familiarity, and a comfort. I think there'll be others where it is closer to upsetting, destabilizing, confusing, jarring in a way he wasn't before. I'm kind of hoping for it, because that'll be the point, yknow? I hope he's there for her to lean on as she recollects herself, and I hope he also surprises her sometimes.

His strings are cut, but hers are too. I hope she looks at a puppet, hers but rogue- and gets to grasp that fear and love and change with both hands, for herself, too.

GtWAC day 15: share some LORE

I was buzzing over this one and decided I’d like to share about my fae species from my “Realm of Sollus” worldbuilding project.

Now obviously fae are nothing new but I do think every author/artist who uses them adds their own flavor and this is mine!

Firstly there are 7 fae courts in Sollus: Solfae, Lunfae, Florfae, Cavfae, Nixfae, Aquafae & Aracfae

Each court has their own strengths and niches, for instance the Solfae are wonderful glass workers while the Lunfae are renowned for their medicine

A court is headed by a queen, the queen is empathically linked to her court allowing her to understand how the overall morale is doing.

In my world this is the lifecycle of a fae

When a fae dies they are buried, generally in special gardens, over the body plants will sprout. When the flowers bloom they’ll have eggs in them! The eggs are then taken into the hive where they’ll hatch into grubs. Grubs then grow into fledglings. Fledglings reach maturity as fully adult fae at 100 years of age. You can equate the first 100 years of a faes life to the first 20 of a humans. When the fae dies the cycles starts again.

This process only differs for the Aracfae who arnt quite the same as their cousins and instead of hatching into grubs they look much more like, well, spiderlings! They also tend to mature faster and become self reliant by their fledgling stage. This is due to the Aracfae being far more predatory in nature than other fae (they are not opposed even to eating their cousins)

The fae have three forms: Fae, Elven & Wild

The fae firm is their natural state and normally fae stay in this state their entire lives!

The Elven form is a larger more humanoid looking form they generally change into in order to interact and trade with the other species of Sollus

And the wild form is actually something that’s been lost and most fae can’t do it, it’s more of a myth, a form shaped from a moment of intense emotion

If anyone’s curious to know more I do think about these guys like… a lot… they live rent free in my noggin… so feel free to send me some asks!

You've mentioned before that your academic background is in analytical literature. So what made you take the leap into creative writing? Had you been thinking about it for a while before your first post, or was it spontaneous?

Okay so honestly I have never been inclined to try creative writing really, and I still don’t think of it as something I “do” in the same sense that I “do” rhetorical analysis and stuff if that makes sense.

The story of how I got into this is pretty simple though! Basically, my best friend and I had a couple of margaritas and went down a rabbit hole of choose-your-own-adventure content on Tiktok, and I thought “This seems simple enough, I could probably make one of my own” and then I did! I wrote it that night, which is why the first episode is absolutely shot through with typos—sober Toady would never let that fly 🫠

As far as the writing itself, I get a lot of comments about its being “unique” or “distinctive,” which I feel I very much owe to my academic background. It’s why I have such a hard time answering the question of who or what inspired the stories (and why you’ll see me recommending the same things over and over)—truly, I just try my best to write in a way that wouldn’t piss me off if I had to pick it apart for an essay or something!

❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories?

One of Elyss's best memories was getting to meet and hold her newborn niece for the first time! Elyss has been incredibly isolated for her entire life, with (some of) her family being her strongest (and, until very recently, her only) connections in the world, and her brother Max is her best friend and most beloved person. His wife had their daughter, Emily, when Elyss was out living alone in the woods, but she knew roughly when the baby was due and came home pretty shortly after she was born. Holding her was the most pure distilled moment of joy and love Elyss has ever experienced to date. Em is about five now, and Elyss would do absolutely anything in the world for her.

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

Elyss is very intense, bad with people, and sometimes ruthlessly true neutral, but at the core of almost everything about her is overwhelming love, and a largely unfulfilled desire to be loved. It makes her incredibly compelling to me, and is the source of a lot of her conflict both within herself and with the rest of the world. She prefers to think things through very carefully and act logically and rationally, but she's fundamentally ruled by her emotions and they often get the better of her decision-making in ways that confuse and frustrate her. She craves connection with others, but doesn't know how to forge or maintain relationships, and is so used to social rejection that she has a hard time even recognizing affection when it is there. Like... she's probably my most straightforwardly violent OC but JUST under the surface SO much of her story has been about love and acceptance, or lack thereof, and what she's willing to do out of love for others (almost anything) and I'm so incredibly soft about it

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

Elyss was my first 5e character; she was only supposed to be a one-shot character at a weekend get-together with friends, and we built our characters that weekend with free resources and without a lot of prep ahead of time. This is relevant for two reasons: one, I always wanted to play a ranger, and I'd envisioned having an animal companion, but I ended up being sick for most of one of those days and didn't have enough time to wanna have to mess with looking up animal stats and mechanics on top of everything else; and two, the app we were using to quickly build characters listed genasi as a race, and when I found out that was the elementally-aligned race I instantly got the mental image of a character whose skin naturally looked like it was underwater with light rippling though and went OH YEP I'M DOING THAT. Otherwise, a lot of her initial characterization was inspired by me being interested in nature and in wilderness survival, and imagining a person who had spent most of their life alone in the woods building their entire personality and philosophy on life by watching the way the natural world works (and, consequently, not having any social skills because they were never around people).
