Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better - The Spy Who Loved Me
Because I watched #TheSoundof007 yesterday, and although Shirley Bassey remains my fave James Bond 007 singer, this Carly Simon track captures what Bond is all about.

It’s axiomatic that “Music is not a competition” …
Popular consensus has it that music is not a competition. Music is art. In art there can be no winners or losers. Comparisons are invidious. It’s all a matter of taste. Play nicely children...
Which does make one wonder what the following are for:
The Top 40 Charts (and all sub-sets thereof)
Album/Single Review star/out-of-ten/whatever ratings
Lists of the Best 20 anythings of the year in every publication on the planet
Brit Awards / MOBO Awards / Awards for every genre under the sun
Battles of the bands
Or indeed, actual events with bands ‘playing off’ against other bands to gain admittance to yet more events where bands play off against other bands before a panel of judges announces who’s best.
“But if it were a competition, why aren’t there any prizes?” Well, in the real world gig or festival bookings might hang on ‘winner of’ (or maybe just ‘finalist in’) labels; non-committed fans might go to see acts who have those labels over those who don’t, or listen to their albums…
“Well that’s just ‘outsiders’ and grubby commercialism, not actual musicians” you say. Presumably that’s why those musicians will never urge you to vote for them, or trumpet their having won, or boast of their chart position or place on the year-end roll of honour, nor of course allow PRs or promoters to mention any such things on gig posters, press releases, album sales blurbs…
Of course Plunger know that it isn’t really a competition. If it were a real competition half of the entrants would have missed the starting gun, tripped over the first hurdle, got disqualified for illegal performance enhancing substances, or been shot for being lame...
... and don’t even dare whisper “FFP”!

Radiohead, James Bond, And Growing Up A Little Sad
A couple days ago I was rifling through Youtube when I searched ‘Radiohead “Nobody Does It Better”‘. I vaguely recalled hearing Thom and company cover the Carly Simon Bond theme years ago on some live bootleg, or possibly in some fever dream while sick with a gifted virus. Turns out it wasn’t my fever-y brain tricking me as I found a video from 1995 where the band did indeed cover the Marvin…

That's the problem with best friends. Sometimes they know you better than you know yourself.
