Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985). A gay man and a political prisoner are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies and his own life.
Oh, I really loved this one. Tenderly told with rich cinematography and transcendent performances from Raul Julia and William Hurt, this is a movie that chooses connection and intimacy in the face of violence and isolation again and again and again. It pulses with both the pain and the release of those choices in a way that had me more than a little misty. A really special watch. 8/10.
man, people criticized barbie for being a sanitized intro to feminism but clearly that’s the level it needed to be at considering the academy watched the whole thing and went yeah… director (and main actress) whom??? We Must Nominate Ken
...wait, people are genuinely upset that greta gerwig didnt get nominated for best director for the toy commercial movie when the movie got nominations for best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best original song, best production design, best costume design, best picture, and best adapted screenplay for which greta gerwig was nominated?
actually the first nine minutes like excuse me??? the character designs are so precious, lmao idk if i'm emotional today but casual queerness making me teary eyed help, and a plot point that's already made me gasp???? i'm nine minutes in??? bless??????
A Room with a View (1986). Lucy Honeychurch shares a brief romance with George Emerson in Florence. Yet as she tries to move on with her life and look for marriage elsewhere, can she truly forget the events of that summer?
A who's who of British period drama stars brought to brilliant, sensual, lush life by the wonderful, James Ivory. This just pulses with romance, not just between the couple in love, but in the script (tenderly written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala) and the scenery and the platonic relationships too. Just total magic, from start to finish. 8/10.
anyway i think award shows should stop trying to be funny. you’re never gonna be relevant again just accept that but especially and most importantly you will Never be relevant again by being funny.
ngl I’m soooo happy eeaao got so many oscar noms bc it is such an extraordinary film but the fact that nope was snubbed in literally every category (while fucking top gun and avatar got best picture noms) is absolutely criminal. nope was hands down the best film of the year next to eeaao. and while i haven’t seen it i find it stunning that the woman king was also completely snubbed after the great reviews it got. every time the oscars manage to do something right they still fuck up monumentally in some other way. the racism, the misogyny, and in particular the antiblackness run appallingly deep.
