A Soldier's Story (1984). An African-American officer investigates a murder in a racially charged situation in World War II.
While it'll never quite stack up when it comes to the In the Heat of the Night comparisons (the two films share a director and thematic throughline after all), this is still an excellent, intelligent thriller grounded in great performances and a sharp script. Denzel Washington's the clear standout (I can't believe this is only his second feature!), but he's bolstered by a great cast all around. Just a really great watch. 8/10.

man, people criticized barbie for being a sanitized intro to feminism but clearly that’s the level it needed to be at considering the academy watched the whole thing and went yeah… director (and main actress) whom??? We Must Nominate Ken

Sometimes I still think about that Seth-Yellowstone article. Like why did they do that. Who would do that to me?

Broadcast News (1987). Take two rival television reporters: one handsome, one talented, both male. Add one producer, female. Mix well, and watch the sparks fly.
God, what a screenplay! It's seriously got to be close to perfect, and it's only bolstered by some excellent performances and sharp direction. It really lets the chemistry between the triangle simmer without ever losing sight of the industry that gives all three of them meaning and purpose. Truly one of a kind as a rom com, and one that lands the not-quite-happily-ever-after in a way lesser films can't get away with. Magic. 9/10.
