Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). To save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales.

I only have the vaguest recollections of watching this as a kid, so to it really felt like a bit of a gift to have the excuse to see it again, and man, what a gift! Just so full of warmth and good humour in a way that blockbusters these days forget. It's an invitation to hang out with characters you love in a familiar-unfamiliar context, in a way that really hones in on environmental issues of the time (rapidly declining whale populations!). It feels like it shouldn't work, but it just does. 8/10.

Robocop (1987). In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.

This is a) so much better than I was expecting, and also b) so much better than it has any right to be? Sure, it's partly copaganda, but it's also a pretty scathing indictment of corruption in the police force and how capitalistic interests inherently treat people as disposable. Plus! It's a fun sci-fi movie! Plus the VFX are pretty darn sick. 7/10.

if promts are Open. A beauty and beast Au where svi are royalty, Tommy is neglected and/or shuned by the rest of the family and other People. On his birthday a curse fell on the castle and all who were in it. Tommy gained monsterous features and instincts while the rest of the castle occupents were shrunk to the size where they could be a snack. The now shrunk people(palace staff, visiting merchents, Nobela, guards,...) are terrified, thinking that Tommy would eat them if found, so they hide and try to figure out how to reversu this. Tommy on the other hand has no interes in hurting any of them, he's honestly kind of worried that their gonna trio and fall. Not to mention that his New instincts demend he protect them, just lovely.

okay i’m also mad that nope wasn’t nominated for like anything at the oscars as evidenced by by post about being mad that was being reblogged here but let’s not come for the one nominee that literally invented a whole new camera and new filming techniques to capture actors at supersonic flight at imax quality from the inside of a cockpit. you don’t have to like it to respect the amount of effort and ingenuity that went into the production.
