Animal of the Day!
Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Eastern United States; Southern Central America
Size (Weight/Length)- 34 g; 22 cm
Diet- Insects; Fruits; Small lizards
Cool Facts- The great crested flycatcher is an expert at the art of aerial battle. Targeting mostly flying insects, these flycatchers can snatch bugs out of the air by diving in head first. Rarely seen on the ground, great crested flycatchers perch on fruit trees and target the insects that flock around the fallen fruit. Being monogamous and often returning to the same partner every year, great crested flycatchers have specific roles. The mom raises the chicks while the male chases off any predators or other flycatchers looking to steal a nest. The chicks only stay with their parents for two to three weeks before setting off on their own.
Rating- 11/10 (They have a sunset belly.)
