Recently Rewatched Black Friday (Starkid) with one of my very close friends, and the WHOLE time I was talking (Extending the musical to around 4 hours oops) and now I can't stop thinking about doing a Black Friday Rewrite....

There are so so so many things that could have been very good, but it just. Falls short. And don't get me wrong, I like the musical, but some of it justtttt... Feels like a chore to get through to get to the good bits. And that is something that should Never happen, because the musical itself is SO good when it's Good.

I might post about it more if I feel so inclined, it's just a shame that it wasn't as good as it could have been.

so, peter spankoffski debuted in tgwdlm, then dubbed as "obnoxious teen" in the script but affectionately nicknamed "hot chocolate boy" by the fandom, played by robert manion. in black friday, the cineplex worker was supposed to be pete, but then rob got cast as ethan. so the cineplex worker couldn't be pete, since the only scene the character is in has him and ethan interacting. so, this character was played by joey richter. pete himself, still played by rob, shows up at the very end as one of the cameos in what if tomorrow comes.

cut to nightmare time s1, and the cineplex worker- or "obnoxious teen" as he is still dubbed in the script, appears a few more times over the course of the season, with the new character schtick of him having a different job in each timeline. namely as a watcher world employee in watcher world, and a waiter at pizza pete's in jane's a car. in nightmare time 2, obnoxious teen returns as a stage attendant at the starlight theater in honey queen. he is still played by joey in all of these appearances. meanwhile, pete- now played by nick lang, appears as a lead in nmt 2's abstinence camp. with every episode of s2 taking place in the same timeline, and pete even saying "i'm gonna miss the honey festival" early on in abstinence camp, this leaves absolutely no wiggle room for assuming that these two are the same person. peter spankoffski and the obnoxious teen are indubitably separate characters.

cut to fucking today, it is announced that joey has been cast as pete in the upcoming nerdy prudes must die, with the announcement using the specific phrasing of "that obnoxious teen, peter spankoffski".

No but on a legitimate note I've seen just about every Starkid show (not including the Tin Can Bros stuff because I can't fucking find it on YouTube) except for Ani, and I tried watching that but I'm not into Star Wars so it just fell very flat for me. I got into Starkid because of TGWDLM. I love the Hatchetfield series, Twisted, Trail to Oregon, and Holy Musical Batman. I liked Starship (absolutely loved Dylan's song in that) well enough but the ending was kinda bleh, and I just,, was not a massive fan of Firebringer or MAMD. They're fine enough but I probably wouldn't rewatch them. The Very Potter series was pretty good too but with everything that happened with JK Rowling I kinda distanced myself from it.

I ended up leaving the fandom for a bit because of the whole Robert Manion thing that I'm actually still not sure what exactly happened??? My mental health just could not deal with it at the time. But idk it sounds like stuff got resolved so ?? Idk. I know he got removed from NT2 to 'rebuild trust with the team/cast member in question' but apparently people are saying he's gonna come back for NPMD? If he does come back then I hope it's because everyone - including and especially the person he harassed - has agreed that they feel safe with him. I try to be optimistic in general and he did seem genuinely remorseful about what happened so,,, idk I'm not up to date enough to really have an opinion on all of that. It was a dark time for everyone for sure but I hope things are better.

Also I've been thinking about writing some Hatchetfield stuff and maybe messing with a Last Legacy/Hatchetfield crossover. You can throw some ideas at me if you want.

Rant/Spoilers for Black Friday below because I have a lot of feelings about it:

Okay first and foremost I love Dylan Saunders and I love Kim Whalen but the Tom/Becky relationship was so whatever to me that I just,, didn't care about them tbh. The basic idea of it was sweet but idk!! I think the difference between them and Paul/Emma in TGWDLM (who I love) is that Paul and Emma kinda fell in love throughout the story whereas Tom and Becky kept bringing the plot to a complete grinding halt to do their shit. Take Me Back was just lackluster imo.

I loved Jeff Blim (as I always do lol) He is In A Hurry and him?? As fuckin uh??? Mister John McNamara????? ouGH I LOVE HIM 07. He makes me wanna take a solemn vow to become my best self now. I openly simp for him. He's just a fuckin spectral agent in the Black and White now and I hope he's fucking Wiley's shit up.

Also the way that Joey Richter's voice got all gruff when he said 'a gob of fucking lust'??? orz.

As a neurodivergent younger sibling with a well-meaning-but-sometimes-not-the-best-but-still-trying older sister and an abusive mother, Lex and Hannah hit me right in the chest. Especially because when we were younger my sister always talked about leaving home together. Absolutely loved Ethan but why can Robert Manion never survive the fucking show. Reversed!Ethan killed me and my heart broke for Hannah so bad.

So the Robert Manion situation.

I’m not going to get into exactly what happened here because it could be triggering to people and I don’t want to explain it wrong by accident, but it’s on Robert’s Instagram story. If you don’t have Instagram, it’s basically all over the tag for him on tumblr as well. Im feeling a lot of things that I don’t really want to unpack right now, and I honestly don’t know how to proceed in this fandom, so all I can offer here are a few PSAs. A lot of this is just kind of parroting what I’ve heard around the fandom, and if you think I said anything wrong here, you can absolutely let me know and I will do my best to fix it.

This goes without saying, but don’t defend what he did. It was shitty and wrong. I can 100% understand the want to hope for the best, but there’s no sugarcoating this.

You might have complicated feelings and that’s ok. Other people might feel differently and that’s ok too.

That being said, this isn’t really about you, or me, or anyone except the people directly involved. Nobody owes us, as a fandom, anything. These are people who most of us don’t know personally, and it’s none of our business except for what people decide to share.

I know everyone else has said this, but do not under any circumstances bother other Starkids and Starkid-adjacent folks about this, ESPECIALLY the person Robert tagged. Like I said before, this is not our business and nobody owes us shit.

Also, don’t bother fellow fans to talk about it if they haven’t or don’t want to. It’s a VERY sensitive thing and I can understand why it would make people uncomfortable.

Don’t speculate. I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about why they think Robert came forward now, or why the person hasn’t talked about it, and while I know you have good intentions, this isn’t some fucking hexagon puzzle. These aren’t characters in a musical. These are real people who are online and could potentially see this.

Speaking of characters, if you still like Ethan or hidgens or whoever, you’re not bad for liking them. They aren’t Robert, even if they were played by him.

You’re also not bad for having liked Robert in the past. You couldn’t have known about it. Still, though, do be aware of your personal biases when posting about it. I, for one, really did like him and look up to him, especially as a bi person and an aspiring actor, and I know that that could affect the way I think about this.

If you didn’t like Robert in the past that’s all well and good, but for the love of god, please don’t post shit about “well I always got a bad vibe blah blah blah.” You’re not better than people who were fans of him just because you weren’t. This isn’t your chance to morally one-up other people.

If you’re talking about what happened in detail, please make sure to use proper tags. If you’re not sure if/how to tag something, you can always put an “ask to tag.”

Just…be kind to each other, please. We don’t know the full story, we don’t know what Team Starkid is going to do, if Robert is going to be in nightmare time or future projects, and the only actions we can control are our own. So I've been listening to The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals cast recording a bunch lately, and I thought I'd make a song ranking!

14. You Tied Up My Heart - probably the most forgettable song out of all of them. The only part I really remember is the part where Sam "comes back to life". I've only listened to it a few times.

13. Let Him Come - good but not as memorable as others

12. What Do You Want, Paul? - This song is hilarious, but I don't think it's the best for Jeff's voice. His vibrato is a little all-over-the-place in this one. Also the "I want you to choke me" part is a little awkward. lol

11. America is Great Again - great song, just doesn't top many of the other amazing songs for me.

10. Cup of Poisoned Coffee - I love it, but Cup of Roasted Coffee wins out for two reasons...

9. Cup of Roasted Coffee - 1. Lauren's unenthusiastic dancing and 2. DECAF???? WHAAAAT???

8. Join Us (And Die) - One word. Jaime. She's amazing in this. I love her creepy little "all you gotta do is" and "we're gonna kick your ass and then we're gonna FUCKING KICK YOUR ASS!"

7. Lah Dee Dah Dah Day - This actually was my favorite the first time I watched TGWDLM, but now several of the others have grown on me a little more. I think it might have gone down a bit cause I'm not a huge fan of Joey's verse compared to Mariah's.

6. Show Me Your Hands - Super catchy and I love the humor. Robert Manion = best police siren.

5. Not Your Seed - Love Mariah's voice . Love the emotion. Super sad though.

4. Inevitable - Great ending. This one gets stuck in my head quite often. The mash-up of all the songs is brilliant.

3. Show Stopping Number - My favorite scene in the whole show. Professor Hidgens is my absolute favorite character. I love how Ted is totally into everything that's going on while Emma is just not having it. 5'oclock can't come soon enough!

2. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals - I had the same thing happen to me with this number that I did with "Alexander Hamilton" from Hamilton. I didn't care for it the first time I heard it and then ended up falling in love with it. "Where the fuck is he?" "I have no fucking clue" gets me every time.

1. Let It Out - Love this song! Gets stuck in my head the most out of all of them. I love Jon's acting in this scene. Gives me "Confrontation" from Jekyll & Hyde vibes (but not David Hasselhoff as Jekyll and Hyde, thank god).

Taken me a while but I think I've finally narrowed down my top 3 songs from Black Friday

- Feast or Famine

Like this just absolutely slaps. The layers of the ensemble mixed with the small solos makes it fun to listen to and it's both funny and dark at the same time and it's just like the perfect mix of everything that makes it enjoyable to listen (as well as fun to watch)

- Our Doors Are Open

The fact that Frank is quote explicitly antagonistic to the audience in both the way he acts and what he says yet the people in line are all singing along and contributing just perfectly expresses how so many Americans dont even notice how often they're baited into spending money and dont see how corrupt their system is even though its plainly obvious to foreigners and many young people within America who've been more exposed to the way people from other parts of the world think due to the internet. Also Corey. Corey's leg. And the hips. Could rival Robert Manion honestly. The range darling.

- Take Me Back

Honestly my main reasons for loving this song are based on my huge love for Dylan Saunders but also I hadn't seen any of Kim's stuff before this and HOLY HELL SHES GOT PIPES LOVE.(also yes Becky barnes appreciation time) Just the pure skill and talent in that song almost brought me to tears and it's been stuck in my head for like two days now. (Also the Santa claus storyline in it absolutely fucking wrecked me)

Anyway that's my three favourites but all of them are bangers and will be listening to them on repeat for approximately 57 business days.

And while we're here one of the main reasons that the group numbers were so fun to watch was because of the amazing choreography and James Tolbert deserves endless love
