Happiness at the Expense of Another

It was definitely the philosophical aspect of “Dororo” that made it so intriguing to me. I couldn’t help but find the similarities between “Dororo” and a short story by Ursula K. Le Guin called “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.” (Here’s a link if you are interested in reading [TW: child abuse, child neglect, and abelism] https://files.libcom.org/files/ursula-k-le-guin-the-ones-who-walk-away-from-omelas.pdf)

In both stories, the audience is presented with a community thriving off the suffering of a single individual, if that individual’s suffering is ended then this will lead to the complete collapse of the community. Everyone within the community lives with content even though they are made well-aware that their happiness comes at the cost of another’s happiness/free-will. The community is inherently following utilitarianism; utilitarianism is an ethical system founded by English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who coined the phrase “the greatest good for the greatest number,” thus implying that an action is morally justifiable if the majority are benefited.

In “Dororo,” Hyakkimaru is given up to demons as a sacrifice to ensure the prosperity of his father’s village. However, when he is able to defy the odds and begins slaying the demons that hold a piece of him (his hearing, legs, nose, etc.), he threatens the prosperity and peace of the village he was sacrificed for. The village begins experiencing drought, crop failure, and the looming threat of war. What Hyakkimaru is fighting for is his fundamental human rights that oppose the utilitarianism of the village.

In the end of “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas,” the narrator explains that the young people living in the utopian society become distraught/shattered when they learn the truth of their society (that someone is suffering for their benefit). Yet, sooner or later they begin to dehumanize the suffering child in order to rid themselves of their guilt, inevitably they become indifferent to the child’s plight. I was able to create analogies between the utopian society of Omelas and three characters from Dororo: Nui No Kata (Hyakkimaru’s birth mom), Jukai (Hyakkimaru’s foster parent), and Tahomaru (Hyakkimaru’s young brother).

Nui No Kata feels immense guilt for Hyakkimaru’s suffering, however she takes a stance against her son stating, “I cannot save you. No matter how immoral...No matter how much you’ve suffered...We must continue to devour you like demons in order for us to live.” Jukai raised and cared for Hyakkimaru as a new-born until he was a teen, he is actually the one who provides prostheses to Hyakkimaru so he gains mobility.

However, when Jukai discovers that Hyakkimaru is a sacrifice he refuses to repair his prosthetic leg since he believes Hyakkimaru will regain his body at the suffering of many more. Jukai repeats the words that Nui No Kata states as well, “I cannot save you.” Jukai’s and Nui No Kata’s similar responses is a way to absolve themselves from their guilt, in the same manner that the people in Omelas free themselves from blame by becoming indifferent to the child’s suffering. They choose between saving the majority over minority. I feel what Nui No Kata and Jukai are doing is the equivalent of closing their eyes and doing nothing to rid themselves of any responsibility on how things end up.

Much like the young adults in Omelas, Tahomaru becomes distressed when he learns the ugly truth about his village. Although Tahomaru remains adamant that what Hyakkimaru endured was unjust, he believes saving the majority over the minority (in this case, one single individual) is the correct decision, “Brother, if we break the deal with the demons now, the land will perish. You, who threatens the peace of this land, are a demon to us now.”

Conclusion

Dororo introduces a moral dilemma regarding whether the “happiness” of the majority at the expense of the minority is truly justifiable? The ending of “Dororo” gives a wonderfully-articulated answer to this moral dilemma through its storytelling. It highlights the fact that oppressing the minority and not allowing one to reach their full potential can be more detrimental to society; especially when the individual(s) that are oppressed could have been able to offer so much more to their society if given the same opportunity as others. Kagemitsu Daigo, Hyakimarru’s father, is the one who sacrificed Hyakkimaru to the demons in order for his land to prosper. However, Hyakkimaru has spoiled his plans by regaining his entire body back from the demons, leading to the complete annihilation of his father’s people and land. Daigo and Hyakimarru have one last moment together where Hyakkimaru shows Daigo mercy. While dying, Daigo reflects and realizes that Hyakkimaru could have been capable of saving the land and people if given the chance, “Hyakkimaru...if I hadn’t turned to these demons that day. If you had succeeded my reign, the prosperity that I have so desired may have…” I love this ending because it shows that it was fear and ignorance that led to the complete collapse of the community, they were their own undoing. The people and land that Hyakkimaru hailed from were the true demons, they created their own misfortune and paid for their sins dearly.

Hallo guys...

Minggu² ini aku sama Dendi sering banget ngobrolin masa depan..

Mulai dari rancangan rumah mau seperti apa, terus mendidik anak mau gimana, anak mau berapa, nama anak siapa "kalo nama anak si udah dari dulu banget kita rencanakan wkwk". Terus rencana bisnis kita pas udah nikah nanti mau kek gimana

Luka liku sebuah perjalanan setiap manusia selama di dunia.. ada senang, susah sedih serta selalu mengeluh di setiap keadaan.. apakah mereka tak pernah bersyukur atas apa yang telah terjadi selama ini. Dulu saya mengalami sakit yang dokter aja bingung saya sakit apa.. sampai saya diajukan oleh dokter untuk berobat terapi saja.. akhirnya kurang lebih selama 5 tahun lamanya.. saya menjalani terapi rutin.. awal saya selalu mengeluh kenapa saya harus sakit begini kenapa saya begini, kenapa saya begitu .. tapi ketika saya jalani saya menyadari bahwa lahirlah sebuah hikmah dari semua kesakitan yang ku alami saat itu. Memang tak mudah menemukan hikmahnya.. namun dengan seiring berjalannya waktu.. ternyata banyak yang harus syukuri.. dari perjuangan bertahan hidup untuk bisa menjadi diri sendiri dalam kurun 5 tahun.. bukan waktu yang sebentar cukup panjang, hingga sekarang aku bisa menemukan diriku kembali.. mungkin kata orang konyol dan gak masuk logika.. namun aku yang merasakannya.. jadi saya juga tidak pernah menuntut kalian untuk mempercayainya.. orangtua ku pun pernah berkata padaku.. jaga akhlak dan keluargamu maka semesta pun akan selalu memberikan jalan kebaikan untukmu.. jangan pernah takut jika kita tidak melakukan kesalahan.. namun jangan sombong.. karena manusia memang tempatnya khilaf dan salah .. dicukupkan dulu yaa.. next kita lanjutkan ceritanya tentang si Nuy ini
