I know it’s been more than a month since You season 4 part 2 aired, but I’m pretty much pissed that whenever people talk about Joe’s obsessions they will only consider as such Beck, Love, Marienne and Kate...When literally Candace and Rhys are there.
Like I can maybe excuse Candace with her not being shown that much as Joe’s obsession (and still she’s a character purely shaped by her experiences with Joe so I would definitely not ignore her as much as she is ignored), and nurse Fiona is a flashbacks exclusive character... but literally the finale proves that Joe was obsessed with Rhys to the point of stalking him and stealing his towel and other personal belongings of him (and also his underwear if I remember it correctly). I would even go as far as to say Kate should not be considered one of Joe’s obsessions if, despite what is clearly shown in season 4, Rhys can’t be considered one of his obsessions as well.
I might be missing some context as to why Kate is considered an obsession of Joe’s and Rhys isn’t though, I would have to rewatch season 4.

Here are three characters from a story I started in school back in 2018. It takes place in a hospital back in the olden days when people’s blood was drained.
Aaron Adollorato (mostly referred to as “The Scribe”) is well, as you probably guessed, a scribe. He rarely ever speaks with his actual mouth and usually writes everything down, and not even his own words.
Supervisor Iskandar is the supervisor of the hospital, but he mostly only pays attention to his favourite employee, Marienne. He is kind of best boi.
Nurse Marienne is a poor foundling who worked her way up to the top at the hospital. She is very distracted by something else other than the patients, but Iskandar thinks she’s cool and that’s all that matters.

What do you think of Joe Goldberg's unreadable face after Marienne told him she loved him? I also think of how slowly and carefully they made love. Do you think Joe really loves her? I never heard him say it though Marienne said he did.
HEAVY SPOILERS in this answer for YOU on Netflix.... . . . Joe doesn't "love" any of those women. He obsesses over them. His obsession with them is his attempt to fix the effects of his traumas by fixing them. He thinks he failed at that w/ both the nurse and his mom in ways that fed his current pattern of delusional calculated violence and creepy stalking, collecting objects and fantasies (all that masturbation *smh*). Inevitably, once the fantasies he builds up collapse, the women end up dead, most often at his hands. Joe despises himself. That's why he twists himself into what he thinks whatever fantasy-woman he fixates on wants. He never presents a true picture of himself. Nope, not even to Love. One cannot effectively love anyone else w/o self-love. When it comes to Marienne, she is actualizing what he wishes he could be while having a similar history to his own. This is why he's obsessed with her. She's an orphan who grew up in the system, just like he did and suffered effects from her traumatic upbringing, while still ending up rather well-read, interested in books just like him and worldly (which the snob in him definitely has a thing for). She, -and this is despite her past addictons and the fallout and consequences for that-, is too good for him. ...Beyond him really, because she realized a truth he is too deep in delusion to even hear, nevermind, take in. She even iterated it *clearly* in front him. If you betray that inner voice, that self-love within too much, you lose her. And while Love took it all in and finally got it, his inner narrator totally ignored it, interpreted what was going on as Love falsely turning her against him and continued to obsess. Chopped off his own damn toes and torched his life to continue his creepy pursuit. Joe doesn't know what love is, because he's never truly been loved *fully* as a child nor as an adult (because he never presented a full and honest picture of himself, even w/ Love he had the adrenalin/posion thing together w/o her knowledge as well as his Marienne fantasy). He clung to crumbs as a child. He hasn't really loved either. Possession, taking w/o consent (everything from panties to used tampons), lack of honesty...none of that is love. Killing his mother's abuser was closest to an act of love he's ever performed and it effectively drove her away. It's an act he continues to replicate, in his attempt to get the right outcome next time (getting a woman -avatar for his mother who rejected him- to love him back). Joe has to be stopped. Point blank. My prediction is he'll realize his folly as he dies in the final ep of the last season. Maybe Marienne will get through to him? But honestly, I just want her to survive him.
P.S. Even Joe's narrator is a liar, yall. That narrator is just justification for his delusion.
P.P.S. This is how you'll know Joe actually loves Marienne. He'll let her go. If he doesn't end up doing that, it's still just obsession.

Joe From ‘You’
Tumblr media
So i dont really care what people say but i really like Joe’s character with almost everything. It feels so realistic. His trauma, his behavours and his unable to hold onto real relationships. So i wanna talk about why i find him as interesting with more details.
In a way, he is actually like a ‘serial killer’ or well, he is one. (Fortunately, unlike most serial killers, he doesnt rape, he is not interest in underage girls or he doesnt plan to kill people first time he met with them. That unhealthy obsession what makes him a ‘villain’. Maybe thats what make him more sympatic).
Tumblr media
In this scene, he looks so disturbing here. He has specific type in women, he is looking for a woman (in his mind, its his soulmate) and that woman is generally attractive, having in trouble, mostly with male figure in their life. And its always same cycle. He mets with his ‘soulmate’, try to ‘save’ her, solving her problems with his own way but when he actually have her acceptance and love, it ends for him because Joe repeats the same cycle from his childhood trauma. He even admits that he doesnt know how story goes after ‘happiely ever after’.
Edit; Serial killers also have illogical thoughts that somehow another person they will kill will satisfhy them, they also repeat their chilhood trauma again and again but this time, they have the control. Joe is similar too.
Tumblr media
It actually makes sense with his childhood trauma with his neglectfull mother, abusive father and second abusive father, everything he does end up being related to his past. Joe never had an actual father figure in his life, he watched his mother’s being beaten by his abusive father. He end up killing his father to save his mother. This is what he does with crushes too. With Candace, Beck, Love, Marienne, even Dellilah etc.
‘I am gonna save YOU from that guy, he is dangerous, i will do anything for you’ etc etc, its always same sentences.
This is also why he wanted girl as child, because its a girl, then Joe will have to protect her but he didnt know what to do with boys, after all, he didnt get father love at all. He wasnt loved as son by his father, this is why it was hard for him to connect with the baby.
Tumblr media
This is why its safe to say that Joe repeats his childhood trauma again and again. In his mind, he is saving his mother from the bad guy/father, again and again. To him, its justifiable, remember what his mother said. ‘You are good boy, Joe. It was necessary. It wasnt your fault.’ Him killing his father is what saved his mother from this sitution.
Tumblr media
And later, the nurse he had crush on. Mother figure. He realized that that woman was in abusive relationship too and he saw that nurse end up dying. To him, not doing anything/not get rid of the ‘bad guy’ was wrong choice. He probably said to himself many times that ‘if i got rid of that guy (just like how he saved his mother), nurse wouldnt end up dying’. We are watching how his broken childhood hunts him to his adult. Saving his mother, killing his father over and over again.
Tumblr media
And he cant get into actual relationships because he never had. The mother he saved abandonded him. This is not special conclusion for Joe, abandonded children believes that they will be abandonded by others too. Joe cant believe that there can be someone who actually loves him. This is why he kept choosing one sided crushes over actual love.
Edit; Because he didnt get his happy ending with his mother, they didnt live happiely after, in the end of story, woman leaves. Just like Joe’s mother. Maybe, in his mind, Joe’s killing his crush is killing his mother, (hurting her just like his father did), punishing her for abandoning him. Its no concidence that Joe's crushes end up cheating on him, just like how his mother cheated on his father.
Joe keeps saying ‘I just want to be good enough for you’ for his crushes, this kind of thought is really common for abandonded children. They desperately try to prove their worth to the parents who abandonded them. Trying to be good enough for them.
Tumblr media
1.Love is long lasting; it can keep two people together for a lifetime. A crush is very short-lived; it wears out. 2.Love can be described as a feeling towards a person depending upon the relationship shared between two people. It can be love towards children, parents, a partner, or God. A crush is infatuation; it refers only to the concept of being physically attracted to a person. 3.Love is considered a virtue; a crush might be considered a vice as it is a very innocent form of lust. Read more:  Difference Between Crush and Love | Difference Between http://www.differencebetween.net/science/nature/difference-between-crush-and-love/#ixzz7AH4h2oZJ
I saw people who is complaining about Joe’s keep finding new woman. There are times i also wished that he stops but thats the point of crush. He never actually loved them, it was a crush cause he himself doesnt even understand what love is.
It makes sense why it wouldnt work. It was obvious that it would never work with Beck, their relationship was so unstable. And even with Love, people keep rooting for her, wishing that she should’ve killed Joe, even though there is no point when they are actually same, too similar.
Tumblr media
The interesting thing about Love and Joe is, they symbolise each other’s dark sides. Like teraphist said, it was like looking a mirror. In a symbolic way, Joe found ‘love’ but he killed it because what he was actually looking for wasnt love. He just repeats in cycle. (Btw, even though their relationship was toxic and violent, it was stil fun to watch them together, lol.) And they were like equal but them unable to trust each others end it all.
Also weirdly, the way they killed each other was so peacefull, calm in a weird way and maybe, its proof that they failed to be better person because it was said, marriage is a challenge to be a better person every day. What bring Love and Joe together wasnt change or healing, it was their damaged parts, maybe this is why it didnt work, because they couldnt face their darkest side, maybe its proof that they wouldnt be better people, who knows, after all, killing someone like you is self destruction, its not a good sign. (I wish it didnt end up like this, its tragic, they both deserved better). Though, meeting with each others maybe gave them a more self awareness about their situtions.
Tumblr media
Edit; Then, why stalking?
Here’s the thing. Usually people who werent loved, who doesnt have emotional connection with others can easiely idolize/obsess with others. People who dont have their own life, people who is extremely lonely feels disconnected from real world and see the world different than from others. This is why random person saying ‘hi’ to you might mean nothing for you but he would wonder/hope maybe its has a meaning. Actually, in a way, Joe is looking for a meaning in his life. If you are too lonely, you can easiely develop this unhealthy way of thinking, twisted love, fantasy. And eventually, those thoughts can turn to behavours.
What is creepy to us isnt really a thing for Joe because he thinks the person he follows is his fate. This is why he can justify entering his house, looking at her phone, involving her life etc. Its okay because its his soulmate. We could probably think the same, if Beck and Joe end up together. It was fate. They are soulmates. What makes this different from actual relationship is because this is one sided. For Joe, relationship already started in his mind. But thats the thing, he doesnt understand that this is not relationship. This is how stalking happens. It makes sense why Joe became like this.
After all, love story doesnt begin with ‘guy and girl’s having relationship’, it begins with ‘their meeting’ and Joe repeats that love story in his mind again and again.
He is not socipath or psycopath, he has extremely unhealthy idea of love, repeats his trauma in his mind and very disconnected from world. We watched series from his narrative, without it, we can see how silence he is. He always talking with himself in his mind but he is really disconnected and introvert, person.
Tumblr media
I think this series is also exist to crush the idea of love. Like, how young women says they desire a guy who would do anything for them. People think this is true love when its just a fantasy. Actualy loving someone is not doing everything for them, its two people’s connecting each other, value the other’s precious, respecting your partner’s choices and giving a space, being in a relationship while still being invidual. Not a princess who is waiting to be saved by prince. Another irony is, he idolize women he crush on, ignore those woman’s flaws and treats them as they are perfect, while in reailty, they are far away from perfect. Just like Love said, ‘perfectly imperfect women’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even the putting people in that big box is what his adoptive father did to him. (Dont even mention all that grooming and him being raised with hearing things like ‘some people deserve to die’.) Everything he does, thinks end up being related to childhood/his teen years.
Another thing interesting about Joe, he is actually very decent guy. He is not really popular, not too handsome, actually people see him as weirdo. He is not even that strong or clever either. Just a normal guy with heavy mental disorders. And i wouldnt even call him as ‘he is bad’ or ‘he is good’ because;
Tumblr media
He actually have a lot of empathic moments which was intented to be. He is generally kind person, especially to the kids. In every season, he saves neighbor kids. There are a lot of times he actually tried to be better, especially, in season 2 and 3. He also break people free, even though it was actually too risky for him.
There are also a lot of times he was ready to being punished with Forty, Candace but authors didnt do that and lets be honest. Story forces him to be one (just like when he didnt even intend to kill Henderson or that mafia guy who tried to kill him). I dont know you but it felt too forced to me, if Joe wasnt killer, story wouldnt continue so they made him one.
Tumblr media
And also because of those moments, its hard to say he is good one either. The scenes when he looked so cold when he killed someone. Well, he is killer, after all.
Is he hypocrath? Yes, he is.
We see his narrative and him justfying his actions, made it look like ‘it wasnt that bad’ or treating Love as she is worse than him. This is his way of distancing himself from what he did, otherwise, he couldnt be able to handle it. So basically yeah, he is but i think a lot of people in real life is. My point would be better explained, if we people have a power to see other people’s mind. I do believe that we all have those moments we acts as hypocrath. Its easy to think that you are better/right than others. This is why i think again Joe is very decent guy.
Edit; Well and i have more empathy for Joe, compared to other characters in series because despite being obsessive stalker killer, at least, he clearly has serious mental issues while others are being selfish or jerk for no reason.
Tumblr media
So i actually do enjoy with Joe’s character because it feels so real, so realitstically written. In his mental state, Joe’s not actually able to be i relationship makes so sense, though its starts to becoming boring because somethings needs to change, otherwise, plot will be same.
Tumblr media
I personally want Joe to change, actually getting character developments. I dont want him to die or locked up forever, its a weak writing. There are people like him in real life too. I dont want people like Joe to die, i want him to heal, getting help. ‘But he needs to face consequences of his actions’, obviously, he has to but why not both though? Why the idea of giving someone teraphy and making them take responsibility for their actions is treated as two opposite things? Because its not.
I dont really believe that authors will actually do that, i dont think he will get redemption but it could’ve done/it can still happen but again, i just dont trust authors about this because for some reason people are afraid to give a chance/redemption to people like Joe because probably they think it will be unrespectfull to the victims while i disagree. With both fiction and real life. You cant make better place with putting ‘evil’ under your foot, you wont be ‘good person’ by punishing people you consider as bad. People are still people and its always worth to empathize. It will definitely imrove you and make you realize your own flaws, you can be better person by accepting your own flaws, accepting what kind of person you could be in different situtions and offering help to the person you could be.
Tumblr media
(For your record; I dont think Joe’s murderer are justifiable even when he killed ‘bad people (like Henderson etc)’, it wasnt okay either. And i also never saw his idea of love as healthy or i never think he can be in relationship with this mental state because to me, it was obvious that it wasnt actually love since the beginning.
But just like we people think that ‘past traumas dont justify your actions’ at the same time, ‘hurting people doesnt make them less victim or less worthy to be saved’. Victim will still be victim, as long as they werent allowed to be healed and you should still take responsibility for your actions, no matter what.)
(Edit Note; I didnt read the book but i heard that Joe was more agressive (just like his father), seeing Beck as ‘whore’(which probably comes from how his father saw his mother as) and more unstable in book, he would probably seem as less empathic with book but i still think the same about him.)
Tumblr media
Well, anyway, its also fiction and killing villains is weak writing to me. The best and hardest writing is giving an actual character development to the character. This series can be just like Dexter, it can be better, if authors actually do this (giving Joe an actual character development). Anyway, i still really enjoyed with Joe’s character and story, i hope change and happy ending for him.

Ok let’s talk about Joe. Season 3 Spoiler warning.
I can’t believe I’m going to say this but…I kinda liked Joe this season. He’s still a horrible person, but he was less horrible. Watch me think about all the things this season and then fully hate him again.
Joe was a good dad to Henry. He loved him. He really loved him. Leaving him with Dante and Dante’s husband gave Henry a shot to a normal life. I loved their library moment together, that was cute. He tried to better himself for his son, which he sorta did…little bit. Him being a father is the only redeeming quality.
I need him to leave my sis Marienne alone. Cause I know they when he finds her he will fuck up her life. And also her daugther Julia’s life. Joe will kill Marienne and I don’t want that. Also, I need Joe to stop sneaking into peoples houses. I need Joe to stop doing allot of things. I need him to get help…no fuck help I need him to be locked up. Even though I better understand why he does what he does. Cause you know, he couldn’t safe the nurse. I just need him to stop.
Honestly, I think Joe could be a great person if it wasn’t for his horrible personality. Wanting to safe and protect the woman that he love. Great! But he falls “in love” with them within 0.5 seconds and then proceeds to stalk them. And kills people that have hurt them. Or the people that threaten to hurt the person he’s obsessed with. Marienne was leaving to be closer to her daugther, so Joe killed Ryan so she would stay. This brings me to another thing. He didn’t kill Ryan for Marienne. He killed Ryan for himself. So she wouldn’t leave and stay with him. Which didn’t happen cause she left his ass.
Everything that he does is for himself. He will never change. Fuck Joe Goldberg. I fucking hate him again. But once again, Penn did an amazing job. Can’t wait to see what happens in season 4, now that Joe is in Paris. Now that he is Nick. Hope that the french see right through his fake, musty ass act. I wonder he’ll grown a beard, cause Penn looks really good with a beard. No you know what, keep Joe the way he his. He doesn’t need beard. He needs a jail cell and to burn in hell for all of eternity.
Away, these are my thoughts. I fucking hate Joe. See you in season 4.

Enjoltaire as parents pretty please
Enjolras was a bit anxious, when they finally got to take Marianne home with them. She'd had a few complications that had kept her in the hospital a few weeks more than anyone would have liked, but she was well and strong now, gurgling happy between Grantaire's arms.
And, oh, what a picture they made.
Enjolras's heart melted, stopping as soon as he sat foot in their living room, frozen in place while he watched his husband hold their daughter close to his chest.
Grantaire was wonderful with her. Sure hands and firm arms holding her safe and warm, her little head nestled under her father’s chin.
Grantaire's eyes were closed, lips smiling softly while he rocked on the couch, humming under his breath.
Then, his eyes opened and finally set on Enjolras, blue meeting green, overwhelming Enjolras and his fluttering heart.
He beckoned him closer with a soft tilt of his head, a barely-there little thing, as not to disturb Marianne's chubby little fingers tangled in his hair.
Enjolras sat beside them, chest pressing into Grantaire's arm, and kissed his husband's smooth, smooth cheek. It was strange to see him sans beard, but he'd shaved it as soon as the nurse told him they'd be able to pick up Marienne, mindful of her delicate skin.
Grantaire smiled sweetly at him, as bright as the sun itself, and shifted until Marianne's little face was well in view of Enjolras's sight. She gurgled happily when she saw him, squirming between Grantaire's arms and making him chuckle.
"Looks like she wants you to pick her up", he murmured. Enjolras moved closer, head tilted on Grantaire's shoulders while he wriggled his fingers for Marianne to grasp.
"What if I hurt her?" he whispered, felt Grantaire's lips drop light on his temple, "You won't, sweetheart. We can do it together if you want, Hm?"
Enjolras nodded and they moved together, shifting until Marianne was between Enjolras's arms, Enjolras's back against Grantaire's chest.
Chin hooked on Enjolras's shoulder, Grantaire smiled at him and Enjolras rubbed their noses together, eyes never leaving their sweet Marianne.
He sighed happily when Grantaire brushed his hair aside, kissing the mole right beside his ear. "Are you happy?" he murmured, warm and tender between Enjolras's golden curls, and Enjolras nodded, body going lax against his husband's, certain of his strong arms around them.
"How could I not be?", he answered, Marianne sighing against his chest and Grantaire's warm breath on his skin, and if he shed a few tears, too, well, Grantaire was there to kiss them away.

Happy Mother’s Day: Tea with mum - Nicole Kidman's Mother's Day wish
Happy Mother’s Day: Nicole Kidman has a wish for Mother's Day. "I would love to be able to have a cup of tea with mum and sit on the balcony and talk about life, and have her tell me what I should be doing," states the 52-year-old Australian actress. Like many individuals separated by social distance or closed borders from their family members, Kidman will not spend this Mother's Day with her mum, Janelle. Instead, Nicole and husband Keith Urban, 52, and their daughters Sunday Rose, 11, and Faith Margaret, 9, will use video conferencing apps to communicate with Antonia in Sydney, Janelle and Nicole's sister, and Marienne in Queensland, Keith's mum. Kidman describes her mother as "my mentor, my guide and my nurturer" And she has special thanks for Keith's mother. "She gave me Keith, she gave me the greatest gift," states Kidman. "And I am down-on-my-knees grateful to her."

Instagram Speaking from Nashville over the telephone, Kidman's voice has tenderness. We are a world away from the more common Hollywood machines and press junkets. Instead, Kidman suggests, "we're in a position where we just have to relinquish control right now and go day by day." Not seeing her extended family on such a day as Mother's Day would be profoundly felt. "I have my immediate family here, but I don't have my extended family, who are so much a part of me. I can't touch them," says Kidman. "So many people are in exactly the same position. So many people right now are going, 'When will I see my family again?” "Nurses, physicians, first responders and vital staff will feel the sense of disconnection most intensely, says Kidman. “People that are away from their families, quarantined from their families, because they're actually of service to saving lives," she states. "They can't go near their children and it's important to recognize that. I don't like to speak for other people, or tell people what they should feel or think, we're all just in that place of extreme awareness and gratitude for what other people are giving up." Kidman was unable to attend her mother's 80th birthday in Australia in March, after the global coronavirus lockout took effect in late February. "Talk about just gut-wrenching," says Kidman. "At least, there is FaceTime and technology because it has been a saving grace, but it was always difficult for our family not to have that . "And I know everybody's in the same boat, so many people are; that's sort of why I wanted to this, I wanted to acknowledge that so many of us cannot go and hug our mothers and say thank you, and happy Mother's Day," she adds. Although their extended families are here in Australia, Kidman, her husband and two daughters of the couple are at their Nashville home in the US. Kidman's two older brothers, Isabella, 27, and Connor, 25, are now in London and Florida. As a mother, Kidman says it is an inevitable part of the gig to worry about her family. "But I try not to have it be contagious in terms of worry, it's more like a 3 am worry," she says. "I'm sure a lot of people are waking up at 3 am right now." "I FaceTime them, mum's still not a Zoomer, she's like, 'No, no Zoom'," Kidman says, laughing. "But she'll FaceTime. I've given her the right angle on the phone now. She's like, I don't like this angle on the phone so, I said, you've got to hold it up, mama. Hold it up high so you're looking up."

Happy Mother’s Day: Instagram Her own mum Janelle looms huge in the lives of Nicole and her young daughters and Antonia and her brothers are Lucia, Sybella, Hamish, James, Nicholas and Alexander. "She's given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I've always wanted to please her," explains Kidman of her mum. "But she also carved her own path, and sought the same opportunity for her daughters to carve their own paths. "Mum didn't necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal," Kidman adds. "That's given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad." Like other lockout families, the Kidman-Urbans and their two younger daughters are also pursuing homeschooling. "I remember my mum always said to me, children are resilient and also, because this is their reality now, they go, 'OK, this is it'," Kidman states. "Do they want to know when it's going to end? Yes. But they (understand) social distancing and washing hands and wearing masks." Kidman also honors her daughters' teachers who are leading the charge. "They have been fantastic," she says. "They're managing to somehow give the children structure and keep them connected. "We travel, so a lot of times our children do home school so this has been less of a jolt for them," Kidman adds. "But they go to a school, they're still very much a part of the school and so much of it is social. They're pining for the social part of school right now, which I get. "I have a little one who's about to be 12, and part of that rite of passage is you're with your friends in your bedroom talking, right? And so that breaks my heart. Many things break my heart." On YOU and Black Women Characters, Karen, Sherry, and Marienne...and a little bit of Peach (who is a mixed-race Filipina).
Okay so, that meta... Seeing how Marienne has been handled in the most recent season (among other, IMO, improvements character-wise), while also being all-too-typically handwaved and/or ignored by fandom....I got the urge to write some meta... Because I feel like the difference between how Karen and Peach were written in the first season, vs. Sherry and Marienne in the third, exemplifies typical pitfalls TV and streaming media too often fall into when it codes it's side female black/brown-skinned characters and ways they can avoid it. BTW, one big change this past season is that Penn Badgley is now a producer. And if you've ever heard the man speak on this show and character, among other things... You'll know he makes an effort to be aware of social causes and ways he can personally improve things for marginalized folks. He's a real mensch, when it comes to that. He's been vocal about correcting fans who unironically stan Joe as a romantic ideal... Because yeah, that dude is ALL redflags, stalking, and excuses for his serial killing. Yeah, the voice is nice, and it's fun to watch all of that play-out, but one can stan an anti-hero/villianous charismatic character while understanding that ish isn't something to *actually* want IRL. People. Just to reiterate. JOE IS ONE OF THOSE CHARACTERS for which you stay far away from people w/ those tendencies, in IRL. So... w/ that preface, I think it's incredibly interesting and thoughtful how Marienne and Sherry were handled, as black women supporting characters. ...While Peach and Karen in season one? Yeesh... (cut because it's loooong yall)
Tumblr media
Yall remember Karen?? She was thirsty for Joe, unabashedly so.
Tumblr media
But the reality was that she was just a convient placeholder, a tool to make Beck jealous. So, the double-edged stereotype was that she was both undesirable and the sexual aggressor *sigh*. ... Thankfully, the one good thing about the writing choices for her was that she peeped that Joe was crazy and she listened to the little voice and got out ALIVE. I hated that she was invisible to him as an actual living breathing attractive woman though, except to be used. Again, this is a typical and stereotypical construct for black women side characters.
HOWEVER. Season three actually corrected that, by explicitly showing Joe as the problem there... And not Karen, or any other WOC's desirability (as is all too typical a message media tends to send out for drop-dead gorgeous black/brown women side characters in yt media). You see, Joe is a snobby yt man who has been running away from his poor-orphan-grown-up-in-the-system roots. His "education" from an abusive bookseller (yikes) and genuine love and breadth of knowledge of books, he thinks, elevates him above certain people, -plebes, in his mind. But oddly, at the same damn time, he looks down his nose at wealthy people for being handed what he sees as something he worked -and was worked over (all that trauma and abuse) for. And all the issues he has (which is NO excuse BTW), stem from his Oedipal complex. The root cause being his "failure" to protect the mother figures in his life, when he was a boy. One rejected him after the trauma of child-Joe having to shoot/kill someone to spare her more harm/abuse, and the other died (in his mind) because he *failed* to act violently to protect her from fatal abuse. Thus, his stalking behaviour, obsession, and feelings of ownship over women he fixates on. He can both "protect" them and keep them from abandoning him, by acting (often violently) for them, on their behalf (w/o their knowledge or consent), to keep them (with him) safe. So every woman he has looked at as "The One" (until Marienne, but I'm getting to that) has been a yt woman who needs saving, just like the nurse and his mom. All were in toxic relationships with other men, in some way shape or form, relationships he could twist in his mind as someone he could white knight her away from... From Beck's narcisisst two-timing boyfriend, to Love's unhealthy co-dependency on her brother, to Natalie's distant relationship w/ her workaholic husband. The difference between them and Marienne though, is Joe was already stalker-fantastizing about them from the first look. Marienne, however, was written as purposely invisible to him, in a expansion (and fix! IMO) for why he *also* didn't see Karen.
I'm saying, that despite Joe having grown up in the system, he's always been a hypocrite. He looks down on other yt people (especially if they have wealth privilege) calls out all of the excesses, while he himself *also* wasn't able to see those he unconsciously saw as beneath *his own* gaze. It was NO ACCIDENT and IMO a brilliantly rare little bit of telegraphed writing...That Joe only started to actually see Marienne as a person beyond the bossy irritant in the way of his book hobby, when he #1 heard the White Woman Syndrome definition and call-out (*lol* Joe didn't know shit about it, until Marienne and Dante told him and took his know-it-all ass down a peg) and #2 learned she spoke French... What I'm saying is Joe is diet-racist, in that yt moderate way MLK called out, i.e. "good" yt people who are unconsciously biased, ignore/prejudge the black people the see everyday, but don't think of themselves as actively racist... And the fact that she "surprised" him, in that way... Made him unconsciously feel like he had to prove he wasn't that typical yt person he tends to eviscerate in his narrations. Because, not only was she dismissed from the jump, but it turned out that she checkmarked all his hallmark stalking points, but went one or two better(!)... In that she has a similar background to himself, having grown up in the system abandoned by her mother, -which is the aspect that cemented his obsession... She is also "educated", has a daughter (which he wanted Henry to be) is a good and loving mom, and is targeted by... you guessed it, a toxic -ex, which makes him feel like the better alternative, necessary protector. So, to him... Marienne is perfect. And for me, it's so fascinating to see White Woman Syndrome, desconstructed and flipped on it's head with this storyline of Joe actively "protecting" her in his fucked up way, i.e. shivering with bug-eyed mania, as he stabbed her -ex multiple times in the chest while saying it was "for her". And that conversation between Marienne and Love??? WHEW!! I fucking LOVED THAT. Because, Love did not lie. Everything she said about Joe was absolutely correct. In fact, the reason why Joe couldn't obsess over Love anymore was because he saw in her, everything he hates about himself. And Marienne?? I loved what she had to say, calling out her own damn self for falling into self-destructive habits. She *admitted* that she had purposely ignored that little voice that told her Joe was bad news (a reason why she played up the suspicion and "tough boss" at first). IOW, Marienne is Joe's ideal self, if Joe had handled his trauma better. She's not out here killing folk. Yes, she fell into addictive substances, but she actively is doing what Joe *wishes* he could about his serial stalking and murdering, and healing herself. That is the root of his fixation... Oh! That's another thing. Joe is a sociopath and a narcissist, so he also fixates on women he sees *himself* in... He loses interest, when he sees the flaws he'd like to fix in himself. And that is why he literally burned his entire life down (including abandoning his son *smh*, mainly because he fears his taint will make the boy just like him) and went to Paris to find her. In the meantime, while I see Marienne as a bit of a correction to how Karen was shafted in the writing, I also see Sherry as a correction to how Peach was done. Peach was a typical bitchy brown girl side-character, without the benefit of nuance, beyond her crush on Beck. Meanwhile, we got to the see the nerdy rejected roots Sherry and the unhealthy coke-head roots of her soulmate husband behind the type-A "mean-girl" too many black and brown girls are simplified into in shows. I liked that. Sherry, was that way to protect both herself and her family from ever being seen as the rejected out crowd, she and her hubby used to be when they were kids. Cory's hyper-fixation on projecting a feminist hyper-masculinity was for her... And kudos to them casting a buff non-ugly partner for her.
I have heard and repeated that actual love is loving the "crust" of a person. And goodness knows, THAT was Sherry/Cary in that box. Just ALL of the most BURNT crumbly, crust pieces ever and *still* beneath that... at their very bottom, was their love. And the delicious irony of it, was that once again... Snob-head-ass Joe (and Love too, this time) got it wrong. They weren't a fake plastic love, but the real damn thing... If I'm being really-real, Love saw that too. It was the reason why she put the gun in the box w/ them. Say what you will about the weirdness of these two, but you CANNOT say they don't love each other. It was to the point that that aspect of their marriage triggered Love, when it came to her and Joe. And that... (a black woman being truly loved and having a "happy" ending) is always subversive in yt media. Also, both the actors gave... *lol* A+ partnering work, in this. I really enjoyed that messy bisexual couple. Anyway... Sorry about the length and scatterbrained aspect of this meta... but I had to write this down.
P.S. I forgot to add Delilah from season 2 as yet another WOC Joe failed to see in that way until she became useful/unavoidable and Ellie as another way he projects protecting himself (and his mom) from trauma. Ellie is a fifteen year old girl w/o parents who most definitely would have been subject to abuse, if Joe had not intervened and killed that grooming creep.

Right, its fiction & it's okay for people to wonder or hope that Joe loves a person, because most people, "Know what they are watching." << It hurt my feelings for you to have put that in your hashtag.
People use fiction to escape real life.
I actually hoped that u wld dig deeper directorially. I wanted to get someone's perspective on why Joe didn't have much of a reaction when Marienne said she loved him. I get that MF is purely obsessed, obviously it doesn't bother him that, "You" loves him back he only wants her to be this perfect little doll in a box. I digress. LOL!
Okay... here's my deeper. He doesn't want a doll. He wants his mother to say 'thank you son, I love you so much for saving me from that asshole! now, I'll stay with you and love you forever!' He wants the nurse who was kind to him to adopt him after he pushed her abusive boyfriend down the stairs. He wants all those things he can't go back and fix. So, he's stuck in this unhealthy insane loop of fixing it for other women and young people who remind him of the boy he was (Paco, Ellie, and even Henry). He's stuck fixing the problems around that threaten them and fixing himself to be the perfect man they desire, so they don't runaway or get killed like his mom and the nurse did/were. Note, that he also abandoned all of these young people just like he was. Even his unreliable narrator called out his mommy issues. Marienne is the closest to actualizing both his issues with finding a mom to save, and staying/wanting him after, *and* the boy he was...having come up in the system just like him. And for any women or girls reading this.... The fact that he's always attracted to women who are broken in some way (so he can step in and fix things for them), is a reallife redflag.
