roland as adrion .. i think i might cry. it'd be a really interesting swap considering adrion's forgiving/subservient nature contrasting with roland's harsher, more bitter one. we've seen roland hold grudges before and that was only regarding terrence leaving them to fight on their own against a fakejoker, so itd be definitely different seeing his reaction to sera's whole incident[s].
evil rei oh my god *keels over and dies*. the idea of ice claws is so cool- especially since he's based on some cooler tones [teal hair, bluey grey x-static costume] it works as a good contrast to volcan's fire.
vaughn and keon switching makes a lot of sense too [since theyre both super shady]. i do agree that while having to swap abilities might be unfortunate, it's pretty pertinent to the plot so it makes sense!
im thinking, is it keene and doc who switch? or maybe doc and kayden. since keene isnt super plot relevant? originally i thought leilah, but im pretty sure she swapped with william :]
also! for some reason, the idea of elaine digging up dirt and isen totally at remi's whim is the funniest thing to me because it's so odd yet so already in character for them. i picture elaine to dig up dirt cause she likes making fun of people secretely [with cecile]-- elaine and cecile are unironically such a great duo in this though -v-
heyaaa, so sorry for the late reply spex :( yea i think roland would be a little harsher towards sera and would have a harder time forgiving her compared to adrion but i think they’d at least be on good terms (especially after the u-mart incident) before sera returns to wellston. he’d show his resentment way more when they were in new bostin though, with evie being the one to go easier on sera because she didn’t want to lose her first friend.
EVIL REI YESSS i wanna draw more of him tbh :3 the ice claws are sooo cool thank u mer ( @stingro ) for the idea!
tbh i was thinking of doc and kayden but it can change anytime if a more suitable character appears. if they were to switch, i think kayden would be a newly graduated nurse and darren would be a chemist who’s been working with william in spectre for a long time. kayden has to get involved with spectre some way through william tho, so i think he’d be william’s student/mentee or something? i also thought about going with the original storyline and making them date but kayden and william’s age gap and jane’s role being so ambiguous make things complicated. i’d probably switch kayden and doc’s ages if i were to go with that but i think the first case with kayden being william’s student works kinda better?? i’m a little unsure about this part so i guess i’ll have a more clear idea about them as the story progresses. oh and keene’s swap is probably nadia :) (the lie detector lady)
heheh yes isen and elaine’s swap is so funny to me too. isen just does everything remi asks of him and tries to flirt with her whenever an opportunity arises but remi ignores his attempts completely. i always imagined that she’d ask for sera’s old records from isen because he’s very good at this stuff but wants elaine to question her (idk why i just want that interview scene between them!). but what you said makes so much sense too, considering elaine looks down upon people a lot so she’d probably secretly make fun of people. i think in both ways, that scene would be a good insight on elaine’s character, revealing her prejudiced side. and yea, i love the cecile-elaine duo a lot here, they’re a little less mischievous than blysen (mostly due to elaine’s calmer personality) but they still care about each other sm :>

Maybe Katie has been spending too much time around Annabeth, or maybe this plot is entirely her own, but there's a look of direct thoughtfulness that reveals her thoughts are not distracted because of something else to see or ensnare her attention or with what feels like a hundred different thoughts that are difficult to organize. This time, it's because she has something else to think of as an alternative plan.
Will --- Solace, that is --- has already expressed his concerns about Khione and some of the others in their group returning to strenuous activity too soon. It's a speech that most of, if not all supers within their age group already knows; in some ways, it almost sounds as if he's parroting Nurse Spex.
Will Solace, himself, along with some of the upcoming high schoolers in Sky High have fought plenty of battles in their own lives. Katie knows this. She has seen it, heard stories of it; she knows that most of these supers had been placed in schools that lacked the needed to protect supers, and some were still startled by being told that one or both of their parents have superpowers.
"But what if they don't see those prying eyes at all? Or what if they don't consider them as prying eyes? I don't think there's nothing wrong with a healer standing by, is there?"

—— isn’t that CHARITY BURBAGE? yeah that is them, sitting there at the RAVENCLAW table with those other SEVENTH years. when sybill looks into that crystal ball of hers, she sees (stacks of vinyl records, torn pages from a book, waves crashing on jagged rocks, long winding roads, peace signs painted on buildings) which seems about right for that NINETEEN year old. anyway i’ve heard they’re pretty RAW, UNREPENTANT, and EDGY. apparently they’re FOR THE LIGHT and HALFBLOOD but i’m sure that’s not related…
A fire was burning….
Somewhere in London near the Old Spitalfields marketplace, Charity Burbage grew up with her wizard father and muggle mother. She was much closer to her mother. The woman indulged her daughter’s natural curiosity and recognized her brilliance from a young age…but even she couldn’t keep the child indoors.
Surely, Charity was intelligent and well-read, but the loud bustle of the city called to her. And soon, she found herself fully emerged in the different cultures and styles surrounding the city in the 60s and 70s. She loved the earthiness of hippies, the grit of the punks, the devil-may-care of the new wave.
But she was excited for Hogwarts and found herself immersing into the wizarding world in the fall, but diving headfirst into the excitement summers brought her in the muggle world.
It was those dynamics that drew her to muggle studies, that drew her to speak loudly of her beliefs. Charity Burbage did not give a shit what you thought of her.
So follow her through the streets of London-town or through the halls of Hogwarts as she will literally make her mark where she sees fit. She’ll ask you questions until the answer satisfies her and expect the same from you.
She was all about critique and being critical of the world around her. Surely, sometimes that made her a little quick to judge, especially for someone considered to be so open minded. But reading people quickly was really the only option she had. So that applied everywhere, to friends, to teachers, to leaders, to politicians.
In some ways, behaving that way felt safer. She kept a few close to her, but never really indulged in why. That would take much more to get out of her. Parts of it are fear of course, for her friends, and her mother especially.
Now in seventh year, Charity knows she is not a ‘fighter’. Not physically. She can provide intellect, and questions. But it’s place in this magical society feels less valued. Charity is a girl with just as many answers as questions, if only people would listen.
She’s considering ‘putting together’ some test scores to apply to universities. Cambridge or Oxford may be her style. But goodness, she’s in love with magic just as much. These two worlds she split herself between are so similar if people were to only....only...stop being so stupid all of the time.
For as likely as she is to engage in deep meaningful conversation with you, she will not hesitate to outsmart and outwit you if her battle calls for it.

Patronus: Friesian Horse Wand: Cherry Wood with Unicorn Hair, Nine Inches
--
Smells Like:
Citrus, oranges, and sea spray
--
Looks Like:
Long cardigans, loose curls falling in every direction, handmade jewelry, leather jackets, freckles known only to those close enough to see, corduroy trousers, vinyl records and band posters scattered on walls, snapped guitar strings, torn book pages shoved into a diary,  a bedside table that looks more like a library, hopping subway turnstiles when the situation calls for it, setting up her own tutoring station in the library, clearing away glass mugs in an East London bar, silly photographs lining her bedroom, a book of spells specifically for charming permanent marks into walls
--
Sounds Like:
As Tears Go By; Marianne Faithfull, Cruel to be Kind; Nick Lowe, Big Yellow Taxi; Joni Mitchell, Warrior in Woolworths; X-Ray Spex, Monster; Paramore.....
--
Life and Relationships at a Glance:
Her circle was small, but good. Those who knew her, knew her well.
--
Family
Charles Burbage, Metal Charmer; Harriet Burbage, Nurse
--
Speaks
A little cockney, but learned received pronunciation when it comes to English,
Some Ukrainian,
Barely French nowadays
--
Facts:
Her favorite musical artists are Marianne Faithfull (as hinted in her blog name) and Blondie (she would rather be talking to Debbie Harry and Chris Stein than to you)
She can play most instruments, but its a jack-of-all trades, master-of-none situation
She paints Pro-Muggle and Muggleborn signs around campus, usually right on the stone walls and quidditch pitch.
She likes to take photographs of her friends lives. The style I imagine is very similar to that of Nan Goldin in the 80s.
The Ravenclaw girl’s dorm is one of her least favorite places. It seems that all together the roommates clash, even when individually things aren’t that bad all of the time
There is a group of muggle friends she sees regularly in the summers. Her relationship to them can be a little strained as there’s so much she isn’t allowed to tell them. They are a wild mix of universtiy students, artists, punks, hippies, etc.

Various Artists — Dreams to Fill the Vacuum: The Sounds of Sheffield 1978-1988 (Cherry Red Records)
Tumblr media
youtube
By the late 1970s Sheffield was on the edge. The erstwhile industrial powerhouse was crumbling under the weight of recession, the decline of manufacturing, rising unemployment and the degradations of Conservative Party policies and especially Margaret Thatcher’s war on labor and the welfare state. A common theme in the contemporary history of other great northern economic centers like Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds that formed the backdrop to the fecund art and music scenes that germinated among the ruins.
Dreams to Fill the Vacuum: The Sounds of Sheffield 1978-1988 showcases a decade of experimentation over four CDs and 83 tracks. The cadences of the once busy factories, the frustrations of the unemployed, the fury of those left on the shelf, the DIY ethos fueled by punk, restless experimentation; it’s all here from ragged noise to slick white funk, from electronic noodling to industrial noir, post –punk to indie jangle. Future MTV staples The Human League, ABC and Thompson Twins, underground legends Clock DVA and The British Electric Foundation, early showings from present day Sheffield treasures Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley and a raft of coulda-beens, shoulda-beens and never-weres lovingly brought to light by the ever digging folk at Cherry Red who have already excavated gold from Scotland (Big Gold Dreams), Manchester (Manchester North Of England) and Liverpool (Revolutionary Spirit).
Although Cabaret Voltaire do not appear their influence is felt as inspirations, producers and owners of the famous Western Works studio which was housed in a derelict cutlery factory and has since been demolished.
Disc One 1977-1981 opens with an early instrumental from The Human League. “Dancevision” unites the band’s familiar synths and drum machines with a rumbling punkish bass line that sounds like a cross between Warsaw and OMD. They Must Be Russians contribute a lesson on STD’s taken from a student nurses’ pamphlet interspersed with an insistent guitar thrash on the hilarious but danceable “Don’t Try to Cure Yourself”. I’m So Hollow’s single that provides the box set’s title is classic early post-punk that sounds timeless with its snare heavy beat, thick layers of guitar, straight ahead bass and earnest vocals. B Troop’s “Junior” adds saxophone, keyboards and funk-influenced bass to the mix from whence the sound of post New Romantic white English soul peeps out. The Toy Shop provides “The Maze” a nicely warped piece of synth pop augmented by choppy guitar and a carnivalesque keyboard riff.
Disc Two: 1981-1982 starts with the extended version of Heaven 17’s still relevant “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” a mix tape staple that sound-tracked every student party in the day. Further highlights like Surface Mutants’ excellent dub experiment “Train”, Clock DVA’s industrial noir single “4 Hours” with its wailing clarinet, superb bass line and Adi Newton’s tale of urban alienation, Flying Alphonso Brothers’ “War Games” an Aztec Camera like piece of melodic indie pop, the new wave thump of Shy Tots “English Industrial Estate”, the proto-goth of Stunt Kites’ “Deity’s Lament” are worth the admission price.
Tumblr media
Clock DVA
youtube
Disc Three 1982-1984 features an early incarnation of Pulp with young Jarvis Cocker showing a glimpse of what the future held on “Everybody’s Problem”, the avant-jazz influenced “Intruder In The Dust” by Bass Tone Trap, In The Nursery’s industrial dance track “Iskra”, Tsi-Tsa’s single “Billingham’s Island” which sounds like Icicle Works straining to be the Bunnymen. Chakk’s “Out Of The Flesh” shows the influence of producers Cabaret Voltaire’s machine funk. Defective Turtles are more straight ahead on “Silicon Chip” with its pub rock guitars elevated by a jerky rhythm section and sax sound cribbed from X-Ray-Spex, both good.
As the decade progresses the music becomes both technically more proficient and sonically more sophisticated sacrificing a little of the energy and rawness to the polish. Scala Timpani’s “Winds of Change” is by no means bad just very much of it times with the slap bass, Linn drums and proggy keyboards, think Tears For Fears pre bombast. On the other hand, The Flight Commander’s “Message From A Dead Man” incorporates spoken word samples and middle eastern sounds into an atmospheric collage while The Anti Group gets gnomic and gnostic on “Zulu”. On “Like A Fool” Treebound Story, featuring Richard Hawley, produce a classic piece of indie pop and One Thousand Violins are sarky mid-1980s indie jangle of superior quality on their 1985 flexi-disc (ah memories) “You Ungrateful Bastard”, a track which deserves repeated plays.
youtube
Cherry Red has again given us a bonanza of carefully curated gems complete with a 60-page booklet of tales from the protagonists, photos and background essays about the Sheffield music scene.  It’s a lot to digest but much to enjoy and many rabbit holes to delve into. Here’s hoping they are eyeing off Leeds.

Do you have any headcanons for Jonathan Boy aka Mr. Boy?
I do actually. I realised as I was writing that all of the teachers continue to go by there professional superhero names and never reveal their actual real names, even the ones who graduated from Sky High and have their real names in the yearbooks.
one thing that interested me is that mister boy doesn't wear the red white and blue color scheme all through the movie because those weren't actually his chosen color palette. he wears them at the dance and he wears them when he has his costume on, but the rest of the time he has a completely different pallet of brown and tan and green. so I think in his own way he's sort of a bit of a rebel. breaking the whole sidekick mould.
Also, I still continue to wonder if Stitches aka Mr Grayson, Royal Pain's sidekick, also went to Sky High and just nobody recognised him. Or if there's an employment agency out there for henchpeople, the same way there must be for people who fabricate costumes, branded gear like the gold and purple child seats, install custom secret lairs underneath people's homes, etc. How many people play both sides? How many people are certain considered off limits and neutral because both sides need them?
Plus Nurse Spex specifically mentions the only non-powered child of super parents that she knew was Ron Wilson. But they never mention if other than Will, there are other kids without abilities currently who attend Sky High. Since he wasn't expelled, but rather a signed to the sidekick curriculum, that means there must be precedent and then maybe it's not even all that unusual. so it's possible that Jonathan didn't have any kind of ability.
But I actually think that he must have had some kind of speed-related ability. The early draft of the script mentions he wanted to be called Quicksilver (Marvel might have had something to say about that. certainly DC Comics laid down the law about what principle powers could and could not wear in reference to her Wonder Woman costume). And he's the only person besides Royal Pain who does the quick change costume thing (tho in the montage, they show all the sidekicks doing it, that seems like it was done for the gag. especially since they're not shown going behind the screen with your gym clothes in hand or exiting with their regular clothes).

Audio & Playlist for March 16, 2019: Non Male Musicians
Tumblr media
Gee Vaucher, Joy de Vivre and Eve Libertine of Crass, photo from the collection of Gee Vaucher
This week on Uneasy Listening, it was the annual show featuring women musicians of all sorts! I just went ahead and did the full 3 hours on theme this time around although there’s a bit of a climax at the end of the 2nd hour for the purposes of syndication.
A lot of the time in the popular consciousness women musicians translates into bands with women singing (and maybe women playing other instruments, maybe not) and next year I’m going to make a concerted effort to play more bands that have women playing instruments but not necessarily singing. But at the same time, it’s nice to hear nothing but women’s voices for a solid stretch of time, especially when the music I like tends to be so male-dominated. And of course, the voice is an instrument and there is no less value to being a singer than to being any other kind of musician. Anyway! Thoughts! Here’s the show!
