Reading this article and I'm very excited to see the crew unanimously voting Ed off the ship. Here's the fanfic-y version I've been daydreaming:

Stede excitedly reveals that Ed is alive, completely unable to read the room. Everyone else is just sitting there like "well, fuck," until Lucius demands that Stede gets rid of him. Stede goes "What? Why would I do that?" and then everyone else starts talking over each other, giving reasons why they need to toss him overboard. Stede desperately tries and fails to convince them that he's actually a good guy, then calls for a vote. Everyone's hands fly up immediately to vote him out, and Stede stubbornly refuses to entertain them until Jim says "Stede, please. I've already mutinied once this week. Don't make me do it again." That finally gets the seriousness of the situation across to Stede and he dejectedly agrees.

Five fic Friday

It has been a couple of weeks, and I've actually had most of these links in a draft, even! but last Friday in particular was just kind of out of control, so here we are.

I'm yours, you know (T, 9K) by @andillwriteyouatragedy - a solid entry in the reunion genre with some crew shenanigans and a duel!

Beautiful and Useless (T, 6658) and Your Achilles (E, 10K) - two sides of after "run me through", first from Stede's point of view (he's so oblivious, god bless), then from Ed's (muuuuuuch hornier as per the difference in rating lol), both united in yearning. (counting these as essentially one fic)

heading vaguely eastward (E, 7k) by @yerbamansa - modern AU Mary/Jim, which is not a combo I would have thought of, and the whole thing is only vaguely related to canon - the two characters thrown into their own dynamic. (they have a band!) in any case, it's very good, plus lots of Mountain Goats references, which I'm just a sucker for.

If You Were Mine to Keep (E, 162K) by @mysterybees - canon-era AU in which the Act of Grace involves an arranged marriage between Blackbeard and just-some-rich-guy Stede Bonnet. I was subscribed to this one and got way behind, so when I saw it had finished and I had an opportunity to just sit and read for a few hours recently, I read the whole thing over from the beginning.

Mile High Club (E, 17K) by @veeagainsttheday - like at this point just take as given that I will recommend anything they write? this one is a modern AU where Ed and Stede meet in an airport where they've both been stranded by the weather. I love the silly airport shenanigans, their instant rapport and mutual delight, and I also had a bit of a cry about some grief stuff that comes up in the middle.

If Ed and Stede don't retire right away after all the dust settles, then they're going to have way too much fun with fuckeries and raids. Because, they're both incredibly theatrical, and both enjoy going all out even if it's not entirely sensible to do so (please see: stede getting "killed" like three times over, and ed having artificial fog and fireworks).

They also match each other's excitement and energy so well, as shown in the Lighthouse Fuckery. So you just know they're going to have such a blast planning the most elaborate and detailed ruses just because they can; they'll probably enjoy playing things up more than the actual end-goal.

the thing that keeps nagging at the back of my brain is that all of this, the miscommunication between ed and stede, the incoming conflict with prince ricky and the gang, everything with zheng, would feel better to me if there wasn't only one episode left.

don't get me wrong, i'm not against mess. i wouldn't even say i'm against mess in a finale. my favourite episode of the whole series is still episode ten of season one. however, djenks has said repeatedly in interviews that this finale wraps things up much more nicely than season one and could act as a series finale if they don't get season three. and i am...supremely doubtful.

there's been a lot of good stuff this season, a lot of stuff that i just adored, but these past two episodes (seven especially) have made it abundantly clear to me that max cutting two episodes off of their season order kinda fucked them. there hasn't been enough time to really build up ricky as a villain (he's in the first episode and then just...disappears for half the season) and now he's the main threat that we're supposed to care about. zheng seemed like she was on the war path for them in episode 3 and then...nothing. yeah, she fought stede but if he hadn't been too big for his britches she wouldn't have bothered. and ed and stede desperately need to talk. for like...longer than two seconds. and you expect me to believe all of this shit is going to be tied up in a neat enough little bow in half an hour???

i hate being negative about this show because i love it so so much and i've loved this season a lot up until all this but i just...idk man i really don't know how they can pull it all off and have it feel good.

Rewatching a favorite childhood show/ movie is so wild, because like this piece of media was so important to me at one point and became an integral part of who I am, but it's been years since I last saw it. Maybe I even forgot it existed. Everything is familiar, yet unfamiliar, yet ingrained in my bones.

for me, I love how they're just so clearly delighted with each other. they take such joy from having the other around.

i totally agree! in one of the first pieces of meta i wrote for the fandom i said 'queer love is i love you BECAUSE you're so goddamned weird' (or something to that effect) and i not only entirely stand by it i mean it even more now than i did then.

because here's the thing: i love stede fucking bonnet. i love him from his silly head to his big, beautiful heart right down to his oft-oblivious toes. i talk a lot about how stede needed to change because of the things i've been writing lately, but just because i feel like how special stede is matters to why i am DYING to see him woo ed back into his arms and support him through whatever journey ed takes towards healing the wounds of his past, let me say it here: jesus fucking christ, with this one. ohhhhh i love him.

with his gay little scarves and his liminal space ship and his gayass unicorn prow and his fucking... brilliant and generous unending ability to evolve.

i mention seeing myself ed, and wanting to see myself in olu, but plot twist: stede's the character i might see most of myself in, especially in terms of life experience. he's spent his life alone in a crowd: he looks like the people around him, but they are not his people.

so the people who look like him: they do not love him. they'll let him warm himself by their fires and they would probably allow him into their parties without needing a fake invite to prove he's even worthy of being there, but he knows he doesn't belong there.

all stede's life, he's looked for the people who feel like him.

and then he met the crew, and they felt so familiar he brought them into his weird little liminal space, without even knowing it giving them all space to grow too; and then, he met ed.

and stede felt (though it took mary asking him one very simple question before he knew) there you are. the person i will one day love; my home.

and then s1 becomes him knowing himself better so that he can stand by ed while ed does the same thing, in his own way... that's just fucking poetry.
