Diablo Immortal Bug Refuses Players with Reduced EXP

Players of the RPG Diablo Immortal are being perplexed by a bug called "Diablo Immortal". The cause this time is randomly reduced EXP gained from enemies when farming. The free-to-play game's most dedicated players have been trying to find out what is causing the issue. This is causing farming to be less effective due to inconsistent changes with the earned experience values.

Reddit user staplepies posted his research on the topic to the game’s subreddit. Staplepies claim that they are one of the top experts in farming on the American servers, and were among the first players to reach paragon level 150, dug into the mystery of the experience bug in depth after spending time studying the phenomenon.

These examples are for Shassar Oasis, however Staplepies states that the issue "happens everywhere" due to their high paragon levels (generally 13-14 levels higher than server paragon levels), their earned experience has been reduced by 10%. This is Diablo Immortal's method of keeping their server's population at roughly the same speed.

Staplepies noticed some anomalies in their log's experiences values. Shassar Oasis is home to three distinct enemies - Dust Imps (54 XP), Drubs (48 XP), and Sand Golems (129 XP). These three numbers will only be visible in the area where everything is normal. (Staplepies points out that the bug also affects elite mobsts, but they have kept the numbers very simple). gaming blog

They then show a sequence of increasingly bizarre numbers appearing - some marginally lower, such as an Dust Imp awarding 42 experience instead of the expected 54, and others dropping as low as 1 or 2 experiences for a mob. Staplepies states that "when things get extremely bad, you will see runs and kills that are all bugged. is affected by a bug." Furthermore, the bug can affect the experience globes, which may drop randomly and not always match the bugged kill experience value.

Staplepies also tested the bug at the context of a party. They said that the bug affects all the players in their group but not at the exact time or with similar values. It happens when playing by yourself or in a group, and isn't affected by party size or proximity. They also checked to make sure that the random numbers were not coming from other sources such as events or quests and said that the problem is happening for folks who are at different levels (meaning that it's not necessarily tied to the experience penalty intended for being at a higher paragon level than the server).

There are other causes that they still have in mind - Staplepies says they have noticed an increase in errors in the experience value in certain zones, and the percentage of experience values that are bugged is different at certain times of day. They are currently investigating whether player activity within a server or zone could be the cause such as an excessive number of players could be causing an issue in the code.

Whatever the cause it's becoming a challenge for farmers who have a commitment to the cultivation of. Higher paragon levels could help players compete without spending too much money. Staplepies describes himself as a player with a modest budget, but he can compete with players who have resonance levels between 3-5x and 3-5x for several days. They can be among the first to achieve the new paragon level, until other players catch up. They also ask anyone with suggestions or ideas to help them discover the cause of this bug.

when you're the only member of a minority in a social space, being asked questions about issues relating to your minority is often a straight-up microaggression. asking the trans person in the room about bathroom laws or the black person in your forum about inner city violence isn't a way to be inclusive - it's legitimately stressful for the person in question. no matter how you frame it ("wanting to learn more" is very common,) all you're doing is making the person, at best, feel like they're some sort of walking primer on minority issues. at worst, you make the person being questioned acutely aware that they are outnumbered by people who don't fully consider the humanity of the person being questioned. you end up feeling like you must walk on eggshells in your answer, wanting to leave a positive impression of your entire demographic on whoever asked the question. you have to educate carefully without threatening the sensibilities of the majority.

so, while I believe I’ve made my stance reasonably clear wrt defending edelgard, I also rapidly find myself annoyed by the slice of the Fire Emblem Three Houses fandom which is bent on swinging that pendulum the other way and accrediting her character far below all proper merits. perhaps it’s high time I dedicate that concentrated manic/spiteful energy to another long analytical text post

thus, the topic of today’s blathering on this blog shall be this: the ending of Crimson Flower, the frequent interpretations on the ways it’d secretly suck for everyone, and, without claiming that it wouldn’t suck (because it would), which of these interpretations simply don’t hold up to less motivated scrutinity

-Thesis: Edelgard can’t/won’t actually purge Such Individuals Who Carry A Snakelike Stride To Negotiate Spaces That Are Void Of Light

one of Edelgard’s most notorious points of discussion is her alliance with Fódlan’s baddest, flattest dudes. more charitable readings register it as either a means of playing her enemies against each other, or as a matter she initially has little say over, but can overturn by building up her power base. less charitable readings may register all of Edelgard’s reservations about the alliance as mere theatre -- includingly when she’s not addressing anyone other than them, apparently -- or cast suspicion on the idea that she really did sever her ties with them in the postgame, being that this crucial event is relegated to offscreen and acknowledged only in the epilogue text, which, on all routes, is notoriously difficult to take at face value

the matter with the former is that, just because Edelgard isn’t always honest with her allies, some of the fandom has gotten obssessed with this idea that anything that comes out of her mouth is passible of decanonization, as though one can only ever be 100% honest all the time or a pathological liar. sometimes Hubert also gets hit with some of it, including colorful theories that he’s secretly working with agartha on a deeper level than Edelgard and ultimately intends to usurp her for the ultimate evulz. it’s almost as if one’s not engaging with the same characters at all anymore. but hey, if we must deal in characterization absolutes, let’s go with this: Edelgard and Hubert are both very pragmatic characters -- why, then, produce so much blatantly unecessary theatre? like, there’s an entire paralogue dedicated to Hubert sowing the seeds of a future St. Patrickening; going through so much more trouble than they’re getting worth isn’t how these two operate

the latter issue will give us a little more to chew on, though, because there have been a variety of arguments made to sustain the idea that, despite the epilogue text, Edelgard cannot or will not hunt down the Dudes Who Do The Worm At The Club once the chips are down. a popular one is that Edelgard wouldn’t have enough resources at her disposal to pursue that purge due to having a fucktonne of fresh annexations to deal with; another frequent customer roots itself in archetypal allusions, arguing that, as Edelgard is a blatant second coming of Arvis from Genealogy of the Holy War, her regime should be expected to be headed for the same ignobile end

on the matter of whether Edelgard can wipe out agartha, I’m moved to ask: are the people who push this angle forgetting everything we do see onscreen of agartha? in VM and SS, one month is all it takes between realizing they exist and ending them; in AM, they’re smothered into dust as unintentionally as Dimitri destroys every sewing needle he picks up, largely because Thales somehow figured it was a good idea to stand squarely between the two factions he’d been trying to play against each other.

these guys are jobbers. they’re some of the most weaksauce major villains in the history of Fire Emblem. furthermore, CF concludes with them down several key members and stuck on the endlag of their nukes, which also tipped Hubert off to the location of Shambhala, because I guess it was that important to throw a nuclear tantrum over Cornelia. why would Edelgard be the only one of the three lords who supposedly can’t vamoose these dudes with a sneeze? is it just because she’s the only one who didn’t do it onscreen? and because offscreening it alerts us more readily to what a risible anticlimax the whole thing is, I guess?

as for archetypes -- it’s entirely correct to claim that Edelgard draws heavily from Arvis, and her tentative allies, from the less completely incompetent (but still really poorly written) loptyrous cultists. it’s also correct to claim that the secret spotlight-stealing squad of doom outplayed Arvis and took over his government. still, what sort of logic is this, where an archetypal resonance means everything will play out the exact same way? Perceval is heavily based on Camus and his other imitators, but you can recruit that dude. Jill is heavily based on Minerva and her other imitators, but she can defect back to nation she’d left, if the player is sufficiently incautious. there’s absolutely nothing to obligate Edelgard to follow the same script as her predecessor, least of all to such a point it’d contradict existing canon

(sometimes the ending tapestry also plays into this, because it features a dark bishop behind the crowd, carrying a dagger behind his back. supposedly, he’s threatening the crowd to stay in line. with the dagger that he’s not holding to them. please, rub those last two brain cells together and figure out who that guy is probably trying to kill in that tapestry.)

-Thesis: Dimitri has a secret unidentified heir who’s going to become the new Seliph and make Edelgard his Arvis properly

in a cutscene in ch17, Dimitri tells Rhea that he’s not too worried about getting himself into a straight deathmatch with Edelgard, because even if that ends poorly for him (as it does), there’s another who will carry on the Blaiddyd bloodline in his stead. the fandom has been scrambling for a while now to figure out just who the hell he’s referring to when he says as much

playing off the whole thing with how Edelgard surely must be a carbon copy of Arvis on all aspects, an ascending theory is that Dimitri went and spawned a secret offscreen baby, who will grow up to become Seliph 2.0, and thus, the blade on which Edelgard’s empire ends

the thing is, Dimitri did not spawn a secret offscreen baby. lo, by the combined forces of occam’s razor and conservation of detail, I give you the true identity of the secret remaining Blaidyyd: it’s just Rufus

remember Rufus? Lambert’s brother, was regent when Dimitri wasn’t old enough to be king, wasn’t much of any good at it? you may have written him off because he was murdered in AM, VW, and SS. you know who else was murdered in AM, VW and SS, but not CF? one of Dimitri’s eyes. and that’s not just a crack at Dimitri, either! the reason why he gets to keep both eyes in CF is because the coup d’etat that nearly killed him -- and did fully kill Rufus -- never came to be.

(sidebar -- canon implies that this difference occours because Byleth cast the elusive Summon Conscience spell on Edelgard; I’d say there’s a much more reasonable reading in that, with Rhea alive and relocated to the Kingdom, wiping out the royal family is a lot of trouble just to give her a pretext with which to rule the roost herself. still, see, we can interpret that reasonably without creating another stupid ass Edelgard Totally Lied spot!)

now, I do have to concede that Rufus isn’t explicitly confirmed to be the remaining Blaidyyd that Dimitri was referring to, and it’s also not totally impossible for Seliph 2.0 to be the product of Rufus’s grand royal womanizing. it’s just, at this point, the supposedly clear-cut archetypal resonance is now nothing more than unsubstantiated fanon direly clinging to that last cliff of technically being possible

-Thesis: Almyra will sweep into the wartorn Empire and crush it like a bug

maybe, if they did, we’d finally learn anything canon about them at all-

but see, that throwaway joke is a fantastic starting point. whenever almyra gets brought up in terms of FE16 endings, it seems to be under this unspoken agreement that they’re able, willing, and intent on unleashing a colossal invasion of Fódlan, effective soon enough to take advantage of the depleted and unstable society left in the continent at the game’s end.

why should we start from that assumption, though? it’s not rooted on anything other than the fact that Almyra at one point in the past was all of able, willing and intent on unleashing an invasion of Fódlan that was fierce enough to force international cooperation. what little we’re told of Almyra at the time of the game consistently indicates that this is no longer the case.

in CF alone, Almyra does attack, twice: once as Claude’s reinforcements, and then again when the usual noncomittal border raid meets the new leadership. Edelgard’s forces trounces them both times. note how that’s just Edelgard’s forces, too, and not the continental coalition that was previously required. but that should figure, shouldn’t it? after all, after the Locket was built, Leicester alone kept any new Almyran offensives from getting that serious. and Claude himself points out to Lorenz, in their supports, that Almyran raids dropped a lot in frequency around the time of the game; that may be just pre-timeskip, but all in all, the increasingly clear picture is that, even if Fódlan stirs itself for a bunch of years, Almyra doesn’t seem to be able, willing, and intent on squeezing that opportunity for another major invasion.

sometimes, the centerpin of this theorama is Claude, and specifically, his fate in Deirdriu. supposedly, there’s a catch-22: if he survives, he’s taking his ambitions and schemes back to Almyra in order to come back to Fódlan a few years later with a vengeance, and if he dies, the vengeance will instead come from his grieving parents. now, I know that correctly interpreting Claude’s character isn’t really in vogue yet, but both of those scenarios fundamentally misunderstand him, his development, and his circumstances.

let’s say he survives -- would he be eager to come back with an army behind his back? he might have all of his ambitions, but he’s a guy who rarely holds grudges, loves being alive, and just found out he doesn’t like war very much at all. and let’s say he dies -- sure, his parents aren’t going to like it, but is that all it takes? think back to Claude’s backstory, and to the amount of people who tried to kill him; didn’t these people just finally get what they wanted?

in fact, if Edelgard wants Claude -- and/or his parents -- off her back, accomplishing such is possibly just as simple as entreating with their enemies inside the country. remember, the paralogue where she fights off an Almyran charge also ends with her expressing a desire to reach across the Throat diplomatically, where previous authorities of Fódlan failed to do so because of their strict adherence to xenophobic dogmas. chalk that up to Edelgard’s naïveté or overconfidence all you might want; the long and narrow of it is that the possibility of exploiting inner Almyran politics to Fódlan’s favor is new ground that she breaks by herself.

of course, when it comes down to it, she might not even have to do any such heavy lifting, because it’s just not a given that Claude and/or his parents would be able to enact this vengeance that’s being expected of them, or would even want such a thing. this is, in fact, the breaking point of a lot of other smaller theses about someone who would hypothetically raise the flag of revenge against Edelgard’s regime. y’see...

-Thesis: any number of polities in Fódlan will never accept being violently subjugated by Edelgard

over the course of Edelgard’s march, a bunch of people die, and a bunch of territories get conquered. any number of the families that lose something in the process will then be assumed by fans to be plotting to retaliate against Edelgard for it. this, despite that the exact opposite of it happens over and over again in canon.

and do note, I’m not even just talking about CF. on all of the other routes, you spend a significant amount of the post-timeskip fighting your own country-of-choice’s forces, because a whole bunch of Fódlan folded to Edelgard without a second thought and another whole bunch is just going to stay on the fence unless you demonstrate enough force to draw them to your side.

in the Alliance, about half of all the most influential families side with Edelgard immediately, to the point of being willing to fight the other families over it. furthermore, it seems that Goneril, one of the families that isn’t a part of this pro-imperial bloc, often gets cast as as a focus of post-CF imperial opposition, because they’re very protective of their baby girl who probably died in the war -- nevermind that they don’t seem to be at all uncomfortable with asking for their dutiful new overlords to take care of the Locket while Holst is having another sick/poisoned fit. as it turns out, Hilda can keep her responsibility for choosing to give her life in that battle (against explicit orders, even), and warrior families can get over the fact that war gets people killed sometimes

the Kingdom is the same story; an entire territorial half of it will fold to the Empire on all routes. outside of CF, this requires a little coup, but if none of the western lords ever stood up to Cornelia, what would make them any sort of eager to stand up to Edelgard? hell, AM shows us Annette’s uncle having to give up his own life just so Cornelia doesn’t so much as get the impression that he’s colluding with Dimitri. and then, in CF, there’s no coup, but that same half of the Kingdom flips like a yugioh card as soon as Edelgard gets past Arianrhod, despite that the Kingdom, with the church’s help, is still exhibiting roughly enough military strength to keep pushing the Empire back.

in case you missed it, that’s Edelgard’s whole strategy: she tries to take the fight straight to the people who would never surrender to her -- because once she’s dealt with those, then everyone else surrenders. most of the authority in Fódlan is held by scattered people who put their own individual interests first, and happily base the side of the war that they support only on where they see the best odds of not getting killed, as opposed to any manner of loyalty or loftier value. this aspect of Fódlan gets called out a lot in the game, too

regardless, though, it sounds like there’s a lot of the fandom that’s still constantly projecting a specific type of loyalty onto these people. some sort of devotion to king and country, an appeal to a sovereignity which none of these countries, not even the Empire, probably really have. most of the nobles in Fódlan don’t actually give a flying shit what government they’re currently operating under, and haven’t given one since Adrestia was whole. even the ostensibly tidy three little country arrangement that we’re presented at the onset of the game is actually historically recent.

(fun fact: did you know that, when Leicester first became its own thing, Faerghus was also two separate countries? those two got back together, but Leicester decided not to get back together with them and they made a whole war about it. I feel like that’s a little less than the stark sense of nationality that folks keep projecting on these territories)

so yeah -- there are still lots of fair accusations to make of whether Edelgard’s regime would be a good thing, and whether it would survive. but here’s some that ought to be discarded, at least for those of us who aren’t in the edelhating bubble

I’m Ghanaian American. My parents were born in Ghana and I was born here in the US. I’ve seen it more on twitter and tumblr, but Black Africans don’t like me because I’m American, and black Americans don’t like me because I’m African. So I’m stuck in the middle lmao. I’m what you’d consider a First-Generation African, my parents are Continental Africans, and if I have children, they will be considered Generational African Americans.

First Generation African: A black person born in the US to parents who were born in Africa

Generational African American: A black person born in the US to US-born black parent(s)

Continental African: A black person born in Africa to parents who were also born in Africa

Non is just a prefix, black people don’t have a monopoly on the term! I suppose you think nonbinary people are racist huh?

Yeah sure it wasnt coined by black people but the context it’s currently used as was predominantly used by black people. ALL people who are not black benefit from and contribute to antiblackness, even if they are marginalized themselves. That kind of dynamic doesnt exist in other contexts (unless we’re talking about transfem + transmisogyny, but that’s something you’d have to talk to someone who is transfem about. Plus they have their own word for  “non-transfem”). Using it in contexts outside of antiblackness is appropriative (Yall are annoying as fuck with the “non-aspec” “non-lesbian”(this term also has anti-bi roots btw) “non-bi” shit etc, stop it. You also can’t complain about the “replacement terms” lumping yall with oppressors when “non-x” does the exact same thing you’re so worried about. “Cis” puts cis gays with cis hets, cis disabled people with cis abled people, cis white people with cis poc, I could go on.) 

Plus we’re talking about marginalized groups here. Black people are a marginalized group. Binary people as a whole are not so the term nonbinary isn’t appropriate at all.  I dont take issue with terms like “nonamerican” or “nonwhite” because (obviously) whites + americans as a whole aren’t oppressed for being white or american.

Basically using "non-x” in contexts to talk about oppression bad, everything else good.

Follow up: If we can’t use non-[marginalized group], what can we use instead?

Is x AAVE?

I have a tag dedicated to what is and is not aave and how harmful it is for nonblacks to use aave given its history. I know some things overlap with southern culture but others are specifically for black people. A lot of “stan twitter” language/slang is just repackaged AAVE. No, I can’t tell you how to stop using AAVE. Don’t tell me you’re going to try to stop using AAVE, I don’t want to hear it.

Why don’t you like the n-word being compared to LGBT slurs?

Race and Sexuality/Gender aren’t comparable topics because each deals with a different history of oppression. I don’t care about slur discourse that much because I don’t even use/reclaim any myself except the n-word.

I have a problem with nonblack LGBT people co-opting black culture and struggle(like they always do), especially for trivial online discourse.

And to be honest it goes deeper than slur discourse. Every other day someone is weaponizing the oppression of black trans women, or comparing “cishet aces/aros” in the LGBT community to white/nonblack people invading black spaces (you know, something that ACTUALLY takes resources away from the people who need it, see the cultural appropriation of Black African and Blac American culture in literally any nonblack community while black people get demonized for said culture), or tokenizing their black friends to get away with something blatantly racist. And that’s not even getting into how a lot of gay slang/stan culture is just repurposed AAVE/black culture.

And I’m not gonna lie, I’ve seen this more with exclusionist accounts than inclus accounts, but it’s still not excusable for inclus to do that either. We get erased as black gay/trans/queer/aspec people up until it’s time for discourse accounts to bring us up to one-up each other

Most likely not, because I’m not an expert or an advice blog. I’ll try, but don't take my word for it. I’m also tme, able-bodied, not Jewish, singlet, etc, so I’m not able to accurately answer questions about transmisogyny, (physical?) ableism, antisemitism, “sycourse”, etc.

I might be able to give advice on school-related stuff since I just graduated high school, but remember that students are not a monolith, and what worked for me may not work for someone else.

Her current projects including Hazbin Hotel are full of anti-gay/trans/aspec (Angel Dust, Vaggie, Alastor), antisemetic (Mimzy), and racist (Vaggie again, that yellow cyclops character that I’ve forgotten the name of) content under the guise of humor. If you’re into that shit, whatever, just don’t follow me and don’t whine when I make posts criticizing it.

Why is it important to have byf or about?

1) So I know gross people aren’t following me. This is not up for discussion

2) So I know someone’s not speaking out of their lane, which tends to happen a lot. (i.e, someone refusing to disclose that they are tme when discussing transmisogyny, someone not having their race listed when discussing racism)

3) Some people don’t want to interact with people under 18 or over like 30 or something.

Yeah, yeah, people aren’t entitled to personal information and all that crap but I have a serious problem with people speaking on topics from a place of privilege. Not to say they can’t talk about those things, just perhaps add a disclaimer that you’re privileged when talking about these things and be open to criticism, and NOT blocking people of the said marginalized group when they tell you something you’ve said was problematic.

I also have a problem with people who are intentionally vague about their age. There’s a difference between interacting with someone who’s 20 and someone who’s 29. I don’t want to say it’s the opposite for minors but at the same time there’s a difference for saying something racist at 13 and doing so at 17, and keeping your age vague makes it harder to determine how to deal with something like that. (Not that 13-year-olds shouldn’t know better, it’s just I don’t feel whole ass callout posts and receipt blogs are necessary for someone of that age).

CW: This part is dedicated to discussing the so called “Problematic Ships”, namely large age gaps, adult/minor relationships and non-platonic relationships between family members.

Without further ado - let’s do this!

Problematic Ships

There are many things that can make certain ships problematic in the eyes of fans, but I would like to discuss four categories:

large age gaps between adults (yellow)

human/dragon relationships (orange)

adult/minor relationships (teal)

non-platonic relationships between family members (purple)

bigger version

As you can tell, several categories can overlap, but I will discuss the non-incestuous version of the first two separately from incest.

There’s also an interesting case - Nyx, who is shipped with both minors and adults. Since we don’t know her age, I don’t think we can make any assumptions about ships including her.

Large age gaps between adults

Out of 89 ships in the shipping poll, I counted 31 (more than a third) that include an age gap of 5 years or more between two non-related adult characters. Since there are plenty of healthy relationships with large age gap in real life, I decided to to define what could potentially make such a ship problematic:

the younger adult has entered adulthood only recently (18-20 years old);

the age gap is significantly high (10+ years).

The word “potentially” here is key, because even if both conditions are met, the ships are still not necessarily problematic.

One ship that gets extra attention when it comes to hate is Ruren. I think it’s due to its early popularity in season 1 (which seems to have declined since then). It’s interesting to note that Corpeli, a fairly equivalent ship (Corvus is 20 and Opeli is in her late 30s - early 40s) not only doesn’t get any hate - it’s actually the most popular non-canon ship (ranking at #6)!

I don’t know the exact nature of this inequality, but it could be due to Opeli looking very young and Corvus looking older than he is (frankly, I was very surprised he was only 20!). It does, however, reveal the inconsistency of fans judgement when it comes to the topic of “problematic” ships, which, in my opinion, is definitely worth noting.

Another interesting thing is that out of 11 of such ships (if we include Corpeli), 7 include Soren, 2 - Corvus, 1 - Crow Master, Kasef or Marcos. I will discuss Soren’s popularity in multishipping in a future post, but if you have any ideas to share - I’d love to hear them!

Human/dragon relationships

There are only two in my poll - Pyrren and Regicide. I have heard people call such ships zoophilia, however the dragons in TDP are as intelligent as humans and are able to give or refuse consent, which is the biggest issue with actual zoophilic relationships. Therefore, I would like to argue that they cannot be classified as “problematic” just because someone finds them “squicky”.

At the same time, the “squickiness” factor could influence why human/dragon or elf/dragon relationships are so rare. Another reason could be the size difference.

Adult/minor relationships

We are finally venturing into truly problematic territory. Before we proceed, I would like to clarify certain things:

1. Adult/minor is not automatically pedophilia!

Please stop using this word to refer to any relationship with a large age gap! It’s not just a matter of accuracy - by doing so, you create a “boy who cried wolf” environment, where it becomes impossible to distinguish shippers from online predators. You also turn “pedophilia” into a meaningless buzzword and make people who call out predators get taken less seriously. You’re not helping any children - you’re putting them in more danger.

2. Some people will ship adults with children

This does not give you the right to bully them! Fictional characters are not real and there has been no evidence of shipping having any real impact on children’s safety in the real world. Just block the tags you don’t like and move on with your life.

3. I will not discuss incest in this section - it will get a section of its own

With that out of the way, it is interesting to note that none of the ships I got in the poll are actually pedophilic. I don’t know if it’s because no one in this fandom ships Ezran, Aanya, Ellis and Zym with adults (or each other in a sexual way) or if this topic is so taboo, people aren’t comfortable admitting to that even in an anonymous poll.

This section will focus on adult/teen relationships.

Just like with the adult/adult age gap relationships, not all of these relationships are equal. I plotted all adult/teen relationships by vote count and divided them into three categories:

high school age (purple)

college age/high school age (orange)

older adult/teen (blue)

1. High school age

Relationships with such age gaps occur naturally in real life and are not inherently problematic. Since a great deal of TDP shippers are teens (ages 13 to 19), it is easy to see how Kadia (or Kaudia), Sorayla and Calren are the most popular in this group.

2. College student/high school student

Here we see Claudia pared up with slightly older guys, who are still young enough to be (at least visually) in her dating range (I do acknowledge that the 4 year gap is big enough here to be problematic, but give it two more years, and it would be a pretty standard age difference). The only young adult character missing here is Marcos. That would complete the Claudia shipping cycle :D

3. Older adult/teen relationships

Aka Claravos and Aaravum (Aarasordia, Aaravirdia, and Virdisoravos are all, in essence, Claravos x Soren/Viren/both).

These two ships are too character specific to be just random fetishising of Claudia and Callum. Both are connected to Aaravos through narrative and would make compelling dark stories.

It is also interesting that Aaravos and Viren (the villains) are the only adults shipped with minors (at least in this poll). There’s sadly not enough data to make any meaningful conclusions on that.

Non-platonic relationships between family members

Aka incest.

Incest in fiction is a topic I’ve always found fascinating. What inspires people to ship incestuous ships? How do people relate to those ships themselves? A connection between incestuous ships and irl practice/support of incest is often drawn by people, but I haven’t observed such a connection in my 14 years of fandom activity. Such correlation doesn’t seem to be there.

If I had to sum up incestuous ships in TDP, I could just say magefam and magefam + Aaravos. Does it mean people don’t ship the royal family? Not really, because I’ve seen some content of Harrow and his kids, or the princes together, but what I haven’t seen is Sarai/Amaya or Khessa/Janai.

Sordia is an interesting case, because it’s the only incest ship to score higher than some of the ships from my original list (it ranks #32 out of 40). It’s also one of those ships, I think, that would’ve had more votes if it actually were on the list.

So why do people ship incest? It’s not an easy question, but from the conversations I’ve had with people or things I’ve observed in fanfiction, I can list at least some of the reasons:

some people like the character dynamic regardless of whether or not they are related;

some people like the character dynamic because they are related;

the characters already show love for each other (especially in case of Sordia and Virdia), so they’re easy to ship;

some people would like to imagine a loving relationship between characters who don’t show it onscreen (in case or SorVir);

some onscreen character interactions can be interpreted as shippy;

some people find it sexy, or ship it in a strictly sexual way without getting into the characters’ feelings;

some people like the dark aspect of it and want to use this kind of shipping to explore darker themes.

Conclusion

Problematic ships are an integral, albeit often unwanted, part of any fandom. They do not necessarily reflect the shippers’ real world views and opinions and are often used as an outlet to explore dark themes.

There’s often double standards regarding which ships are deemed problematic and which are not and disgust towards certain ships is frequently expressed through bulling and call-outs.

While most shippers of problematic ships are aware of the problematic nature of their favorite ships, there’s still merit in having civil discussions on various ships and their implications.

Women can abort, with or without the fathers consent. I generally agree with this being as it is the women’s body. Women are also lucky to have many resources to help them with abortion procedures and pills.

The baby can be put up for adoption. The mother chooses parenthood. She wants to keep the baby. If they both want to keep it, great. It all works out. But what if they’re weren’t together and both wanted equal custody? While 50/50 custody is still rare, it is slowly rising up. However, many groups feel its unfair to women.

OH MY, WHAT’S THIS?

Golly gosh, has she really gone and made yet another god damn blog? Yes. Yes she has.

Let me explain myself. I know this is probably like what, my tenth or eleventh online blog that I’ve made now? You would think that I would have a huge and dedicated reader base by the rate and ferocity I create these blogs with, but well, since I forget about every .tumblr.com and .wordpress.com after about a month or two, it comes to no surprise that these unattended digital corpse-pages don’t really have many readers. Should maybe give them a proper burial by hitting that delete button and letting them move on to the afterlife of 1′s and 0′s. But since I don’t even remember half the URLs I came up with, they’re probably just gonna keep peacefully existing in the graveyard that is the the forgotten blog section of the internet.

So. Why another one? Why add onto the pile of aesthetic yet virtually empty “personal” websites?

I’m just going to tell you what my therapist told me: “It seems like you have so many thoughts in your head, it probably feels like exploding.”

Can’t blame ya, Kerstin, twenty minutes of incohesive rambling doesn’t really meet the expectation of a “quick rundown”. Sorry for that.

Anyway, we then proceeded to talk about overthinking, as we have done a million times before. And, as we have also done a million times before, we came to the conclusion that my inner monologue resembles a thirty-meter death-ride water slide, when it comes to the velocity and severity of how fast and far I tend to spiral with my own thoughts.

Now, don’t worry, by now I’ve been in therapy for long enough to know how to safely land back on the floor. However, I did agree with my therapist that my intense introspection does sometimes compromise me in my day to day life, as I will spend days on end in my own head rather than in the world that lies outside of it. That then usually leads to self-isolation and that, in return, leads to even more introspection. Hooray, to unhealthy processing mechanisms!

Alright, enough self-deprication. Basically, the conclusion I came to in that session, was that I’m pretty much the exact opposite of the “no thoughts, head empty” meme. For me, it’s more like “all thoughts, head explode”. Seriously, I realize that this has a certain bobo-esque, self-absorbed cringe vibe to it (did I really just say vibe, this is worse than I thought). However, I also care for and know myself well enough that I tend to downplay and ridicule the fact that I really do have a massive stick up my ass when it comes to talking about my emotions, my traumas and all those pesky, invasive thoughts. Eliot and Karen have taught me to be patient with myself.  From them I have learned how hard it is to become masterful and yet I’ve decided it’s better to love the process of learning as much as the final product.  Communicating isn’t just talking, it’s developing a connection with another.  Music connects us all.  I wrote these lyrics and composed this melody, so this voice?  Yeah, this one’s mine.

Whom Should You Hire at a Startup?

Startups. We know the mantra: Team matters. Is this philosophy exaggerated? Overrated? Cliché? No. The team is the only thing that matters.

Whatever you’re working on now, the half-life of innovation is so rapid now that your product will soon be out-of-date. Your existence is irrelevant unless you continue rapid innovation. The nature of the Internet and global knowledge is such that even if you’ve stumbled onto a super interesting area of innovation there will be many teams tackling the same problem at exactly the same time. If you develop something novel that catches a spark you’ll have the world gunning for you overnight. In this, globally-connected world product leads disappear in nanoseconds.

So how exactly do you assemble such a team?

1. Only hire players

There’s an old saying, “A players beget A players. B players beget C players.” Why? Well, A players are discerning and tend to only want to join somewhere where they perceive other A players are. B players tend to have slightly more self-confidence issues so they tend to hire people slightly worse than themselves – thus C teams.

Is this a universal truism? Of course not. But it is general pattern matching. And it’s why VCs tend to look for uber-talented founding teams. We know that if you start with ho-hum founders you’re less likely to assemble a world-class team.

So if you’re trying to scale your team be focused on quality. Don’t sacrifice. Don’t hire too quickly just because you raised money or because you feel pressure to make things happen. The minute you compromise on quality you’ve already begun the descent.

2. Find people to “punch above their weight class”

I wrote an entire blog post about this in the past highlighting my belief that you should hire people who “punch above their weight class.” But what does that actually mean?

It means that many management teams I know feel the need to hire people who have “done it before” and frankly many VCs encourage this. It’s a mistake. When you hire somebody too early who has already “done it” you often find somebody that is less motivated in tough times, less willing to be scrappy (as many startups need to be), more “needy” and less mentally flexible/willing to change their way of thinking.

Importantly, you also find people who are too quick to undermine the authority of the founders. They “know more.” You don’t want sycophants – don’t get me wrong – you want people who challenge your thinking and a meritocracy of ideas. But you don’t want team members who openly question your judgment, your authority. At least not publicly.For more visits Non-Profit CFO Services

So what does it mean to “punch above one’s weight class?” It’s a boxing analogy. It means a welterweight who wants to fight in the heavyweight category. It means a “young Turk” who has something to prove. It means somebody who held the director of sales in their last company but in this company wants to be VP. Their last company said, “you don’t have enough years of experience.”

You said, “Eff experience. I want to know whether you can deliver. If you can, you’re golden. You’ll go a long way. If you can’t – you’re toast. Are you up for it?” It’s Tristan Walker of Four Square. They hired him when he was an MBA. He had no right to ask for a senior biz dev role at one of the hottest companies in the US. But he was ready to punch above his weight class. And he pushed for it.

And heavyweight he has become. He is out-innovating people with 10 years’ experience. He is hungry. He is an A player. His innovation and execution are proving his worth.

3. ABR: Always be recruiting

In the entire time, I was an entrepreneur I think I never really stopped recruiting.

 In my busiest days, I was still taking early-morning coffees or end-of-day beers to meet as many people as I could. Sunday mornings often became recruiting coffee sessions.

One of the “tells” for me of a management team that will not be extra-ordinarily successful is that they’re not always recruiting. I’ve seen it before – I send a talented member to a team and they say to me, “we don’t really have a role for that person.”

Really? I always have a role for talented people. I may not have a BUDGET for talented people – but I always have a role for them. What role? Who the F knows? But let me at least have a coffee and feel out their enthusiasm, talent, and ambitions.

I might choose to do an upgrade on my existing team. I might be grooming them for when I have more money or more revenue. I might not be able to persuade them now but I want them to know my company so that when I’m ready to step on the gas I have a list of A-players I want.

Sure, the challenges to me are obvious:

How can I afford them?

How do I motivate them?

If I bring them on board now, how do I not reduce the motivation from those that I have already hired?

Should I upgrade the existing staff or hire them laterally?

Can I persuade them to join when they have other choices?

If you’re not dedicating a large chunk of time to continually “recruiting” then you’re high. Or maybe you’re “low” – as in “not likely to succeed.”

Remember. Always be recruiting. ABR.

4. Don’t worry about exact “roles”

I think the most limiting factor that stops Startups from recruiting is the “we don’t have an open spec” or “we already have somebody doing that role” excuse. Don’t let that be you. Your team can always make room for David Beckham. Lebron James. Keith Rabois. Sheryl Sandberg.

Get out there and find them. Ask others for intros to their talented friends. Meet talented people and sell them the vision. Get them excited about what you’re doing. Be relentless.

If they’re amazing, then be radical. Give them controls that they don’t have in their current company. Allocate them enough options to salivate. Convince them that even if they stay only a year they’d learn great stuff that would be valid for the rest of their future. You might need several meetings to bag top prospects. 5. Attitude over Aptitude

If you’re doing a great job at continually recruiting and if you have a company ready to hire several people, at some point when you have enough of a pipeline of talented people you need a way to separate them. I have a long-standing mantra, “attitude over aptitude.” This is assuming a raw minimum of MIPS in the candidate. They need to be seriously smart/talented in their field to make the minimum grade.

But within this “minimum acceptable talent level” you still have a wide variance of “employee types.” Let’s be honest – some uber-talented people are PITAs. I never hire them. One bad apple spoils things for everybody.

You don’t see it coming. You figure, “sure, they’re a pain but they produce such high-quality work I’m willing to put up with them.” Don’t. The last thing you need is some rat bastard fomenting trouble.For more visits Interim CFO and Outsourced Tax Service

They’re the ones who are talking pop at cocktail parties when they’ve had one too many. They’re having private lunches with other employees talking about how they’ve lost faith in your vision.

When you hit internal moments of doubt you need the team members who say, “Guys, we can do this! We’re up against the ropes but we’re not down. Let’s dig in.” You need team members who do that when you’re NOT there. You need… mafia.

If you have a trade-off between somebody who is more talented but a “bad seed” versus somebody who is very talented (but perhaps less so) who is a motivator – I’d hire the latter any day of the week. Choose attitude over aptitude.

6. Culture matters

Along the same lines as aptitude, I would say that “company culture” matters. Know what your principles are. Know the kind of people you want. Know what makes a member of your team. What traits are important to you? What values do you want to embody?

Try to set out guidelines for hiring. Try to live them yourself or people will see through it. As times get tough you’ll value this culture. Even in uber-successful times where you’re hiring like mad, you’ll want to know what somebody who embodies your culture is like.

7. Don’t over-sell

Finally, I always tell management teams not to “oversell” and I never do so myself.

I don’t mean you shouldn’t sell hard on the virtues of your company and why you’re the next Google – you should. If for nothing else you want all of the talented people you interview to spread the gospel whether they join or not.

What I’m talking about is this – if somebody is thinking about joining but you can tell they’re not convinced don’t cross the line to get them to join. What does this mean?

It means don’t tell them that their stake will make them $20 million if you’re not convinced it will. Don’t promise them that their role will be much bigger than you’re planning. Don’t promise revenue or growth faster than you know you can achieve.

Sell hard, sure. But don’t oversell.

Why? Because if somebody is not convinced in their own mind and you arm-twist them to join they’re bound to be unhappy and eventually leave. I’ve seen it a load of times. You promise the world. You don’t deliver. They are frustrated. They feel duped. They express this to others. Now you have more than one problem.

And it’s never a good thing when a high-profile hire quits unexpectedly. It causes otherwise happy people to second-guess things.

So sell, by all means. But don’t oversell. Don’t promise unrealistic things. Don’t over-promise.

So that’s it.

So go and schedule your next coffee meetings. Increase your number of interviews.
