Pathhead to Everywhere

I’ve been walking in circles for weeks, parched and disillusioned, hoping that pushing ’til I break might break me out of my cycles. I keep walking away from myself, attempting to take refuge in a bright-green past, air buzzing with little black dragonflies, only to find myself frozen, with that song in my ear, watching a man in orange lycra shirt and black bike shorts struggle up a hill.

The pavement’s all cracked and busted open, jolting little dip between parking lot of the petrol station and the road. It’s along these cracks I find a filthy twopence coin. Found two in a dried-out raised garden in Belfast, deformed with strange growths. Discovering loose change on my walks, no matter how disgusting and unusable, is always a happy occurrence, like I’ve stumbled upon some secret.

My leg hurts from all the walking, tendons strained behind my left knee, but I prefer the quiet roadside to the noisy bus, with its engine stuttering along, full of strangers, the driver asking my destination and demanding fare like some medieval gatekeeper I can never seem to please. I’ve replenished my energy with a picnic in the grass, outside a new housing block, and a limerick I’ve written for Sam Fender, mind running wild imagining how sending it on might lead to a tender friendship, a passionate love affair, or both.

Something about the country and the biker and the music I’m listening to inspires me. I pull out my phone and type a poem. It’s a happy moment, etched in my mind alongside the more painful bits. It’s not the only one, either. The picture, as a whole, is marred by anxiety, depression, loneliness, and shame, but when I zoom in, other positive moments come into focus.

On the upper landing of the Lit and Phil, I find respite, huddled in a corner with a pile of poetry books, scribbling away in my journal, observing others’ lives. At the Scottish National Gallery, I journal again, sat on a bench next to an art student reproducing a sketch of The Monarch of the Glen. I’m massively relieved to have found an escape from the social obligations of my hostel dorm and the crush of strange bodies along the Royal Mile. At the Surgeons’ Hall Museum, I examine rows upon rows of organs in glass jars, until my eyes can’t take any more; across the street, at the National Museum of Scotland, I stand in rapture as the Millennium Clock awakens and performs its hourly dance. A bottle of stout suffices for lunch in Portmeirion; I drink it slowly at a cafe table on the patio, near two men sharing a bottle of champagne. In Penrhyndeudraeth, I pull cash from a shady ATM to buy my first ever kebab, walking back to my hotel, triumphantly clutching my spoils.

Bangor provides romantic trails among hillsides blooming with bellflowers, and I spend a whole day exploring Church Island and the surrounding countryside, getting lost along the beaches and sinking into muck, pissing in any shady corner I can find, procuring groceries on the way back from the cleanest, happiest Waitrose I’ve ever shopped in. Aberystwyth offers the best chocolate cake and almond croissants, and I relax somewhat uncomfortably into my seat at a Korean restaurant in Coventry, knocking back soju and spooning up mouthfuls of spicy seafood soup as I listen to a couple on their first date at a table across from me, discussing cybersecurity.

I contrast my pleasant roadside trek from Pathhead to Dalkeith, where I observe the lonely biker, with a five mile trek I undertook from my accommodations in Newcastle to a business park on the outskirts of Gateshead. Green fields were replaced with rows of tidy brick townhouses and a steady stream of cars which carried on past me, subjecting me to their ever-watchful gaze. I looked into every passenger window, imagining he might be there. I dreamt of him stopping and offering me a ride. I’d tell him the story of who I was and how I’d come to be there; he’d commend me for my bravery. That was all I really wanted, for my troubles. Someone to tell me I’d done something cool or worthwhile, to notice the effort I’d put in, how much I’d improved. But no one ever did, and knowing it in myself simply wasn’t enough.

I’m happy to retread my past, in moments like now, where I feel totally fucked. At least in the recounting, I find some worth, and it removes me, for a minute, from my current obsessions over job, money, and future plans. However it felt then, I’m happy to have done it, that I can occasionally escape to those far-flung memories and enjoy the strange, painful pleasures of a foreign land.

DISNEY’S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE: Food & Wine Festival 2022

Recently, my family and I had enjoyed a day at the Disneyland Resort, where we attended the 2022 Food & Wine Festival at the Disney’s California Adventure theme park. The festival ended on April 26. Below is a selection of the food and drinks I had enjoyed at the festival:

DISNEY’S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE: FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL 2022

Carbonara-Garlic Mac & Cheese - This was a delicious macaroni and cheese dish with peppered bacon and garlic. My only complaint was there seemed to be a bit too many bacon bits, making the dish a little too salty.

Gyro-inspired Flatbread with Impossible Ground Beef - I found this gyro-inspired sandwich with ground Impossible beef, chipotle hummus, tzatziki and spiced crispy chickpeas spicy and surprisingly delicious. I believe many vegans and vegetarians may have found it a welcoming addition to the festival.

Honey-Orange-Glazed Verlasso Salmon Salad - This was the only dish at the festival that I did not care for. I had no problems with the salad, the vinaigrette or the pickled chopped black olives and peppers that topped the salad. I did not even mind that the salmon was served cold. However, I thought the latter lacked flavor and could have been marinated before being cooked.

Snickers Caramel-Peanut Milk Chocolate Mickey Macaron - This macaron was probably the largest I have ever eaten. It was also very rich, very sweet and very delicious. Many YouTube influencers claimed that it actually tasted like a Snickers Bar. I cannot say that I would agree. But I did enjoy it very much.

Glazed BBQ Pork Belly - I will say this about the Disneyland Resort. Its cooks seemed to be better at preparing pork belly than their counterparts in Central Florida. I thought the pork belly was cooked perfectly - not undercooked or overcooked. The BBQ sauce proved to be a great addition to the dish. However, the macaroni salad that accompanied it struck me as incredibly bland. I barely touched it.

Aji de Gallina - This Peruvian dish consisted of stewed chicken with spicy yellow chile , along with jasmine rice and olive tapenade. And it was delicious. I honestly believed this would be something of a miss, but I have always been a chicken and rice fan. Although a bit salty at first bite, this dish proved to be my second favorite at the festival.

Black & Tan Beef Potato Puffs - This is it, ladies and gentlemen! This beef and potatoes dish proved to be my favorite dish at the festival. The dish consisted of pot roast with chives, lager micro sponge and tater tots, topped with a Karl Strauss Wreck Alley stout gravy. O-M-G! The flavor of this dish took my breath away. What can I say? Two thumbs up!

Note

What recipes do you know involving beer or ale? I’ve recently been gifted some - spiced with juniper and a bit of orange - from a Nord friend. I’m much more of a cook than a drinker, but I don’t want to let that gift go to waste…

I too am not much of a drinker, and my personal recipes which call for alcohol mean that I have numerous barely-opened bottles of various spirits in my pantry. Nonetheless, this is what I've been able to scrounge together in terms of Tamrielic food with beer, ale, and the like.

Altmer

High Elven beer is light and even sweet, with flavours like pomegranate and blackberry. Peach beer in particular is delicious when mixed into a gravy for flavourful red meats like venison and rare beef- a working-class Summerset classic.

Argonians

The Argonians of Black Marsh also raise guar, which are adorable lizards with particularly tasty bits. Tastiest of all are guar ribs, which are braised in Argonian Ale and palm sugar for a sticky, melt-in-your-mouth experience that will have you begging for seconds. Serve with saltrice steamed with ale.

Bosmer

Jagga, or fermented pig milk, is cheaper than rotmeth, and as a result shows up in Bosmeri food a little more often. An example is any Wood Elf stew, which has a natural umami meatiness to it that's brought out by the creamy jagga. Definitely one of the more palatable ways to consume the stuff.

Bretons

Battered, fried fish with potato wedges is a Breton culinary institution, and the batter's even better when beer is introduced to it. The fizziness of the beer makes for a particularly crisp yet fluffy batter with a flavourful crunch. Beer batter is good on all seafood, as well as vegetables!

Dunmer

Scrib-and-scuttle, a Dunmeri approximation of macaroni and cheese, can be made even more tantalising with the addition of greef, a comberry brandy, and a splash of mazte, or saltrice beer. It makes the scuttle more creamy and gives a delicious boozy aroma and kick. Even better, top your mazte scrib-and-scuttle with some nix-hound bacon!

Imperials

Imperial Stout is an ancient Cyrodiilic beer that's beloved by many across Tamriel as an old reliable drink. It's also great in food, especially desserts, as its natural sweetness enhances flavours. A steamed butter pudding with Imperial Stout, stone fruit, and chocolate is a delicious dessert originating from the city of Kvatch.

Khajiit

Of course, Elsweyr Fondue calls for ale to achieve its distinct flavour, but I also enjoy a dash of Arenthian Brandy with my fondue these days. Other Khajiiti recipes that involve beer include beer-braised, twice-cooked pork roast with moon sugar. Soft and moreish, this roast involves braising the pork before roasting it with a beer and moon sugar baste.

Nords

In Skyrim, we believe in eating every part of the animal, right down to the head. Smoked, dried, and rehydrated sheep's head is a delicacy that's horrifying to most outsiders, even when it's been steamed in ale to rehydrate the meat. It's then served with potatoes, gravy and snowberry jelly. A truly wholesome meal if you can avoid making eye contact with your dinner.

Orcs

Aside from me, the Orsimer have Tamriel's biggest hungering for beef, and of course they've learned to cook it in many ways with their favourite drink: ale. Juniper ale is especially good when used to braise beef, peppers, and frost mirriam to be baked into a flaky pie crust. Steak and ale pies are an undisputed classic and a must-try for all pie fans.

Redguards

The Alik'r is known for its Kaveh Stout, a drink named for its coffee-like flavour and colour. It's great when used to steam lentils. Add caramelised onions, sliced apples and goat stewed in Kaveh Stout, and a bit of cinnamon and cumin- behold, a dish fit for a king!
