Anti-war, anti-imperialism/anti-colonialism, pro-independence Puerto Rico posters 🇵🇷
Posters are from OSPAAAL (Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa, & Latin America). Latin America in spanish can be "América Latina" hence the "AL" in the organization's abbreviation.
¡Solidaridad mundial con Puerto Rico!

graphic design: adobe illustrator
Tumblr media
To experiment with Adobe Illustrator we put together posters using our own faces. To create them, we were required to draw inspiration from the sharp lines and minimalist colour palettes demonstrated in the set of OSPAAAL posters we saw at the V&A (post about that here!)
To make mine, I worked partially from some videos uploaded onto Canvas where Phil walked us through things step by step, and partially just by trial and error. The first step was, of course, to create a document and import an image of ourselves. It was important that I used a picture with high contrast as the poster was going to be designed with this in mind. Then I had to change the colour palette to black and white, experimenting with the tolerance settings to find a look that worked for me.
The next step was to image trace whilst the picture was in B&W and create paths. I realised pretty early on using images in illustrator that paths are very useful, as they allow you to move things around and fill certain areas with colour. After they were created, I ungrouped them so I could get rid of any unnecessary details, as minimalism for this style of poster was important. Then after regrouping I removed the white areas and colour filled the black spaces with pink as it’s more on theme for most of the work I’ve completed this year. To create a background, I added a new purple layer, colour filled it and used the “Effects” panel to put the “texturised” effect over it for visual interest.
Next - and this is the bit that I struggled with the most - it was time to use the ellipse tool to create a large, wonky circle to sit between the top and bottom layers. For this ellipse, I increased the stroke size to 1000px, changed it to be dashed-line and then played around with the gradient tool until I had an effect that I liked. I think I found this the hardest because most of the tools in illustrator are just labelled with symbols, so as a first-time user it can be difficult to navigate doing something a little more complex than just changing the colours of things. Honestly I was quite confused by Illustrator - I find this with a lot of the Adobe Suite applications, but their versatility means that it can be hard to find what tools you need or it isn't clear how you should use them.
Now that I do know a little more, though, I think if I were to redo this task I would use a different picture of myself - perhaps with a more interesting balance of light and dark or from a more interesting angle. This is because even though I am pleased with how my finished product came out, it is very simple and doesn’t really look similar to the OSPAAAL revolution posters we took inspiration from. I think knowing even that little bit more that I now do, I would be able to do a better job, and probably even a little bit faster, but I think next time I use Illustrator I will watch some more advanced tutorial videos so I can have a better understanding of the software before I jump in.

WHO REMEMBERS WHEN NAZI GERMANY BOMBED FOR PEACE? -- NEITHER DID RICHARD NIXON.
NOTE: Once again, happy posthumous 111th birthday, "Tricky Dick," who sent 21,000+ American soldiers to their deaths in his first term alone. What a wonderful President.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on an anti-Vietnam War poster titled "Nixon's Peace," c. 1972, artwork by Cuban artist Lazaro Abreu for OSPAAAL (The Organziation of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa, and Latin America).
POSTER OVERVIEW: Depiction of President Nixon waving a small Swastika/Nazi flag while riding a B-52 bomber above the wartorn country of Vietnam and a visible Cambodia. This graphic design piece was made near the end of the Vietnam War era, and it tells the audience that Nixon's peace is obtained by war.
NIXON/VIETNAM DEBACLE: "In the 1968 election, Republican Richard Nixon claimed to have a plan to end the war in Vietnam, but, in fact, it took him five years to disengage the United States from Vietnam.
Nixon provided the South Vietnamese army with new training and improved weapons and tried to frighten the North Vietnamese to the peace table by demonstrating his willingness to bomb urban areas and mine harbors. He also hoped to orchestrate Soviet and Chinese pressure on North Vietnam.
The most controversial aspect of his strategy was an effort to cut the Ho Chi Minh supply trail by secretly bombing North Vietnamese sanctuaries in Cambodia and invading that country and Laos. The U.S. and South Vietnamese incursion into Cambodia in April 1970 helped destabilize the country, provoking a bloody civil war and bringing to power the murderous Khmer Rouge."

Thanks to Cuba’s internationalism, institutionalized around the Organization for Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), and the talents of the country’s leading documentarian, Santiago Álvarez, ICAIC itself became a major producer of solidarity films devoted to foreign societies: Now! (1965, about racial struggles in the US),
now thats something i need to see

Emiliano Fernandez in NYC, Day 13
I met Jen this morning at Interference Archives in Brooklyn, a study and research center of social movements. Most of my activities seem to be happening on this side of NY.
I assisted her with some tasks, she needed to catalogue donations. I focused my attention to a specific movement from Cuba called OSPAAAL (Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America). Their publications were a mix of magazines, books and posters, in several languages, with very rich and playful designs.
-
Afternoon visit to the Torah Animal World, a taxidermy museum displaying every animal mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and Talmud. Encouraged to touch every animal on display and visit guided by Rabbi Shaul Shimon Deutsch.
A troll through Borough Park followed, home of one of the largest Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish populations in the United States.

Tomorrow I have the day free, I think the tiredness is catching up. My muscles are still sore from my boxing class and my brain can only do simple associations. Hopefully I will get to sleep in and get some energy back. The days are long and I will need it.
