How many cats have do you think have invoked a dark forest spirit for their boons?

Channeled-- but probably a lot. More than you'd think, and it's probably the reason that some cats are surprisingly in the Dark Forest themselves.

I plan to explain the difference when I get around to making a Dark Forest 101, but Invoking and Channeling are two very different processes

Invocation

To Invoke, you contact StarClan first to send you the cat you're seeking. "StarClan send me the strength of Stonefur. StarClan I pray that Thunderstar will serve justice."

This way, your prayer is not private. "StarClan" is aware of what you've requested, and can consider your entire life at your trial. If your request was evil or self-serving, it can be completely denied, if your prayers are benevolent, they can experience the emotion with you and amplify their collective power.

I like to joke with myself that it's usually like, "Operator get me Grandma I forgot what spice she puts in her soup 💀"

Channeling

Is direct. You're leveraging your connection to the individual spirit. A channel to them, if you will.

You will get the spirit you want, if you did it right and your connection is strong enough. For Spottedleaf and her absurdly high aptitude for spirituality, it was a success rate of nearly 100%. Though... I'm positive there is a way for the Wrong Spirit to pick up, or interrupt the call.

So, items are required for this. For Spottedleaf, tar-spot blight from sycamores worked like a charm. Batear likes bat parts. Hawkfrost goes for sparrowhawk feathers. Through simple logistics, some cats are easier to reach than others.

You can channel a StarClan Angel OR a Dark Forest Demon... but, a StarClan Angel might rat you out, so make sure you trust whoever you're trying to contact. You can't Invoke a demon, though, there is no "operator" to call.

#Obviously it doesn't make it into 'canon' of BB because it would be setting-noncompliant... but I think of phones a lot #I have phone motifs in my head when I work with Invocation vs Channeling #Invocation has an Operator and Channeling is like a Pager #Phone-related songs make me think of spirituality in BB a lot #Baby Hotline and Lady Gaga's Telephone. We're at one of my favorite parts of the story (and probably one of Vash's least favorite parts 😬😬), where we get to see how much Vash's family means to him

In book 1 of trimax, the Doc tells Brad that Vash's concept of family extends to the entirety of the human race

...So a Man revenge-killing a murderer isn't just 2 humans committing various levels of violence against each other (at differing levels of justifiable), it's 2 families members hurting each other and Vash can't bring himself to not try and stop it. Even if you understand *why* they fight, you probably wouldn't want your cousins to kill each other in front of you, right? And Vash struggles with it, because some of these people he's saving really do deserve the bullet reserved for them; but at the end of the day he still doesn't want to watch them to die.

And over the course of volume 1 and 2 of trimax, the story repeatedly brings up the question (either overtly or through subtext) "What would you do if you your family was in danger? What lengths would you go?"

Which leads us to the first big fight for this question when Vash's actual, closest living thing to a loving family is under attack. His anguish is palpable to everyone alive in the room with him, his wrath is close to deadly, and every new room he finds with more puppets just hurts him further. But even when he's faced with a monster that has destroyed his one vestige of safety in the world, even if that monster has talked about how he wants to do the same to him, he still can't bring himself to kill him! He even goes so far to try and spare him!

Not because of any specific moral reasoning (even though he's given one to Dominique before), but because before he was Leonof the Puppetmaster, he was a little boy named Emilio that loved his father's bread and had a crush on a girl named Isabel. He was someone that Vash knew, someone he recognized, and someone he undoubtedly cared for greatly at one point. And even if he couldn't save him, he at least had to try, because he was family at one point too.

And of course, it's not all pain and suffering for Vash, because when he wakes up in the hospital ready to blame himself for not being able to save everyone, Luida cuts him off: He did the best he could, he saved lives despite the losses, and at the end of the day he's still family to them, too. Even if the rest of humanity views him as a menace, there's still someone out there who reciprocates his love in a way that doesn't hurt him.

And boy, you can see how much of a relief (and source of stress it is for him) on his face lmao

Might+U playing when Izuku thinks about Tomura needing to be saved paralleling with the moment Eri jumps to land in Izuku’s arms in the Overhaul arc, the first time that song was ever used in the soundtrack, is actually really perfect

Coupled with the fact that Eri fell into Izuku’s arms and was saved, contrasting S6 where Tomura is being taken away while Izuku is falling away from him, thus the two being separated, is just 👌👌👌

Not even to MENTION that Chisaki is Eri’s abuser, the one who manipulated her, saying that she is the one hurting everyone and it’s all her fault and grooming her, paralleled with AFO, Tomura’s abuser, doing the same thing with Tomura

The fact that it is now shown that, yes, AFO is Tomura’s abuser just like how Chisaki was Eri’s abuser, yes, Tomura is just like Eri in the sense that he is a victim, that he needs help too, yes, Izuku can and will save anyone, ANYONE, who needs to be saved. Even those that blame themselves, hate themselves, even try to push HIM away (hint hint: Tomura giving up crying for help and so giving up trying to get through to the Heroes - “You can’t understand, that’s our dichotomy” “And I won’t forgive anyone”) (hint hint: Eri walking towards Chisaki even when the Heroes were trying to help her)

And that is shown simply through the music choice. That connection alone, is just really great

That fucking song, good grief. I could listen to Emily Blunt call me 'little one' in a song all day. It's BY FAR my favorite one. Second place goes to the über classic This Day Aria! Other than that, I adore the various pony mixes - from Sim Gretina to JTH to loophoof to µThunder... My favorites in that genre are Our Town, I'll Fly, Your Heart Is In Two Places (which was my lyric blog theme until a week or so ago haha), You'll Play Your Part... I have a giant pony music playlist I listen to almost daily - the fan music is usually so light and airy and just makes me happy. One of the best parts to come out of that show, imo. A few of my fics have titles inspired by MLP music as well hdsuhsfdjk, I just love to listen to that while writing my silly little noncon fics What are your faves?
