31/12/2023 Devlog

Hey everyone! Time for the bi-weekly tumblr update for Steamberry stuff! Except I skipped one because I can't remember why.

I half-wrote it but I think I just wasn't feeling up to finishing and posting.

I haven't been doing extremely well health-wise lately but still powering through.

Summary

Finished writing Chapter 5.5 (the new chapter in WSC)

Finished editing Chapters 6, 7, and 8 of Asher's path

Finished all the profiles for the GS lore book

Have started wrapping up the "side stories" and additional content for the GS lore book

Ramble

Okay so in my last update I was in the middle of editing chapter 5 and was nearly to the start of chapter six in editing Asher's route. I finished up chapter 5...

At that point when I was looking ahead, I started feeling like I wanted to add in a transition scene to move between Chapter 5 and Chapter 6.

As I started plotting out this scene, one of my ideas took on a life of its own and I realised that it might be better to interject a new, fleshed out story incident that would allow me to slow the pacing as well as flesh out the setting and universe a little more. This incident would also let me tie into some earlier events and connect them to something that occurs in chapter 6, also foreshadowing the chapter 6 incident.

Ultimately, this became too much to call a "scene" and I decided to branch it off into a supplementary chapter (IE a chapter a bit shorter than the others and meant to be released along with another chapter.)

Then that chapter ended up being 30,000 words.

So that happened.

After finishing that I went on to finish editing chapters 6, 7, and 8. I am currently on chapter 9. I only have a few more chapters before I'm finished editing Asher's path. As always, during my edits, one of the main things I do is flesh things out.

So obviously the word count has grown from that (and, you know, the 30k extra chapter I invented).

Currently the word count is 468,000 words.

Other Stuff:

I have received several new BGs and a new BG sketch. BGs are continuing to come in at a fairly steady pace.

I now have all the BGs for The Ophelia and the artists are working on other locations finally. OwO

I've also been, here and there, doing small tweaks to the sprites, small additions and fixes.

Gilded Shadows:

As I mentioned, I finally got through all the character profiles. There are so many more characters than I remembered in this game.

Then I got halfway through and realised that I forgot five. And had to insert them, which...meant rearranging pages, which is a pain in the butt. However, that is now complete.

What I'm working on now is finishing up some of the short stories and drabbles I have planned or partially written out and getting them into the lore book.

As well as gathering any other content. The lore book is currently about 350 pages. And I am really hoping to wrap it up soon.

Upcoming Weeks:

Next couple of weeks I will be trying to wrap up the lore book and wrap up editing Asher's Path.

When I finish editing Asher's path I'll be moving on to finish drafting the end sequences for the four remaining characters. I'm starting to have an idea of where the word count is going to end up but will have a better idea for sure when Asher's edit is complete.

I have written over 100,000 words since mid-August, just plugging away and trying to hit at least 1000 words a day.

I hit my year end word count goal of 466,000 words for When Stars Collide but unfortunately did not finish the draft because the draft has grown in size.

But I am really hoping to finish it early next year so we can fully move into phase 2 of When Stars Collide.

I am also hoping to get the final KS stuff resolved for Gilded Shadows early next year as well (the lore book, art book, and some residual art and stuff).

For now, I shall just keep plucking away at it until it's all done.

And that's why I firmly believe the books are just parallel's to the game. XP Because they don't make sense, in regards to what we were shown in SB. XD Since even the mimic looks different compared to what was described in the book. But enough of the headaches. Hmm.

Comics! I remember enough that Cassie was able to recognize Gregory's Art just by looking at those stray comic pages in Ruin. XP Which means he's drawn enough and shown Cassie enough for her to recognize it. XD So the question is. What kind of art do you suppose he might've drawn for her? OwO

The books (in my PERSONAL opinion) should stay far away from the games and should just serve as bonus, scary stories that can *sometimes* reference the games in little ways, heck I much prefer the books have their own storylines that can perhaps connect to eachother to create their own interesting book lore that is different from the games!! William shouldn't be present in the books, no Gregory either no NADA. I much prefer they remain as game characters as they take away attention from the other potential likeable MCs of the books to focus on them. Give these new protagonists a chance to shine in the spotlight in THE BOOKS, and let the game characters remain just that.

Sure there is a likely chance that the fandom would break off into two territories (books vs games, and eventually the movie fandom will come in) but to be fair the fanbase is already divided anyway!

Now we have to deal with issues like "check the books for important game lore drops!!" And "this random thing in game can only be explained in the books!!" When a franchise should likely not rely on a different medium to continue a story that was originally made ON A DIFFERENT MEDIUM THAN THE ONE THEY'RE USING TO CONTINUE IT, that's like if a popular cartoon could only tell important bits of the story in A GRAPHIC NOVEL (looking at you, TDP!!)

But besides all that, let's do this one more time!

(I won't do the headline thingy because this rather short :( next time!)

- So this is kind of how it plays off in my head

- Gregory does multiple activities with Cassie to cheer her up (like gaming or eating pizza and stuff)

- And then he suggests drawing in a little quiet area in the pizzaplex

- And so they do just that!

- He probably made several little silly comics (not self projecting,,,) to gift her to make her laugh

- AND ALSO ALSO

- By the end of the day when Cassie had to leave, he quickly managed to make one final drawing for her

- a birthday card, with a drawing of both of them celebrating inside it

- It's not the best thing ever made, being made with grease stained paper and crayons.

- But to Cassie, it's worth more than any gold on earth

- She still has the comics and card in her room to this day :)

I made a new gender: Voidshiftive!!

Someone who feels as though their actual body is a prison, that their gender is a void that changes like a shapeshifter changing forms, as a type of genderfluidity. They may not always be able to pinpoint what gender they are at the moment, and may express it through dress, names, pronouns, art, or other factors. Sometimes, the person may switch through some genders and never use them again, or may have the same gender through each form they take. Forms can change based on what gender you are at the moment. Being a girl and agender is a different form than vampiregender and girl for one voidshiftive person, or a similar form for others for example.

Dark purple: xeno fem person

Light purple: fem person

White: gender neutral

Light pink: masc person

Dark blue: xeno masc person

The symbol represents the shaped form altering

So happy to make this!! I've been struggling so long with my gender, and I think I've finally discovered it. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my ability! OwO

Ive been having so much fun drawing xinyan from the imposter au with the few details you discribe her with along with a little imagination for her design if you don't mind but i would also like to make a note that i was using a body sketch i found so sorry if it doesn't look like my art style i was just trying to make the body and style match i was going for match so ya that's that lol but also i believe i didn't get her tone right since i just got a pic of her full design and used her color palette to draw this so sorry if she looks to light I'm willing to redraw it since the pic of her that i used had bright lighting and ya that's a few things i wanted to say about the drawing and I hope you don't mind the little headcannons i made, tho I'm really more interested in how you veiw xinyan since she had a bit of time to show up but didn't really do much but warn aether with the letter and just dipped out and went of somewhere so I'm really excited for what you have in store for her and the rest once you finish the next chapter lol so I'll be waiting while drawing the few characters design for the future lol but feel free to state how you personally feel about this drawing since in enjoy any feed back or small stuff you'd would like to add anyway see ya lol.

Okay SO I do have a few things!! Most of these are old and a lil messy/outdated, so I'm really hoping to whip out a bunch of new stuff soon, but!! I've got my two protagonists, Iso (I-20) and Aerani--

[These are Old outfit designs, I redesigned them sorta recently but haven't finished a drawing of them, sobs] I first drew Aerani in like, 2016 I think? and Iso followed not long after! Iso is a bunny chimera, so he's got big silly ears, wahoo. Chimeras have identification codes to keep track of like, when they were created, and Iso's is I-20: Chimera Generation I, Specimen Number 20. Aerani gave him the nickname Iso <3

Here was Iso in like. 2017? 2018? idk but it was ages ago. He's changed quite a bit, mostly bc I would Constantly misplace sketchbooks and Constantly forget exactly what things looked like lksad;f

This era of my art was so cute,, I wanna draw hair more like that again tbh

I was Nervous about jumping straight into making smth about them, because I feel like I need wayyyy more practice to be able to tell the story I really wanna tell, so I ended up scooping up my dorky purple merchant Kalamari like 'you know what sure, you can be the protagonist of my practice project and it will be Silly As Hell'. I call my main Eventual Goal 'Quote Unquote Quest', so Kalamari's adventure I'm calling 'Quote Unquote Quest Negative One', since it becomes before the main thing! Aerani will be in that practice project as a side character, bc he's Glass's little brother, but Iso won't be

Also, please witness Aerani's pet, a squishy jello-like blob he calls a frog. It is absolutely not a frog. It sits on his head a lot and makes squeaky lil noises

Here's another chimera! She's much older than Iso, from gen F! The only one left from gen F actually. She calls herself Fa, and she doesn't like to talk, she just hangs out by a pond all day to watch the fish

This is OLD so I'm def gonna redraw it soon, but here's one of my antagonists! They by the name Scratch, and they're sort of. the opposite of Kalamari. I have So Much I wanna draw abt them omg,,

While I do like their color palette, I'm gonnadesign one to match. everyone else. The colors I wanna use for this project (that might eventually change ofc) are brown, orange, golden yellow, magenta, a slightly more purple magenta, violet, indigo, and blueee, with Very Dark Blue and Very Light versions of the other colors for lines and junk. Basically Kalamari Colors ft. some extras to spice things up, since my silly littol practice project revolves around her and how he sees the world:

Everything is very saturated of course bc I'm. cannot and will not use desaturated colors. It's kind of like my chunky lineart-- I can try So Hard to make it thin, but that just doesn't look right to me and as I work woopsie everything is thick and I'm dying

I think Dana explained the betas though, it was the characters in a much different, heavier and darker story, that probably would have leaned more into the idea of witches and… well hell. Since Hieronymus Bosch drew lots of purgatory images. But you cant really do that for Disney. Plus to be fair, you’re meant to be able to throw ideas at a wall (even if they are very unlikely to work) for concept art and then be willing to immediately dump stuff and try new ideas without getting attached.

Side note, while the big selling point for the Betas is that they are edgy or can be used to explore darker subjects, people sometimes just make them borderline evil, or just… actual evil, did you know its very easy to find beta fics tagged with non con and/or underage? Yea. They make Willow actively hateful and sadistic or make the Lumity ship a copy paste of Catradora, aka have them beat the life out of each other but then say uwu owo its not toxic, they love each other.

(seriously i cannot take ship discourse in fandoms seriously, they'll say one ship is toxic or problematic and turn around and ship the same thing but worse.)

For the first point... You're absolutely right. I should not judge for someone exploring different possibilities in concept art because I have no idea when in production that art was made or what the idea for the show was at the time. A LOT of things go through a half a dozen rewrites before the public ever sees them. Frozen apparently came down to the wire for its final plot and it's a miracle we got what we did at all. And even then, I think that movie is still a bit of a mess at times.

Also, fun fact, I have considered an Owl House AU where Luz went to hell instead. In that, Eda would be a demon looking for redemption and her only real ally, but also the only one trying to be real with her so Luz keeps thinking the demons who want to manipulate her are the ones to trust. Amity would have also been an angel undercover and supposed to be giving reports to god about the comatose child who's soul went to hell for some reason when the worst she deserves is Limbo. I could do a concept pitch blog for it but *shrug*

So I think it's personally wrong to conflate canon material with fan material and what is being criticized. Fanworks and the like are one of the safest places to explore different topics or express pain and the like you've had. It also only commonly has one or two eyes on it to say something might be toxic while media on tv usually has a few dozen and the fact that no one catches the red flags is... questionable. Especially why those red flags exist.

(As a note: I can't weigh in on if Catradora is toxic or not because I have watched only one episode of that show. Not even the first. I really ought to though since it seems up my alley.)

WITH THAT SAID, fanfiction authors aren't exactly going to always be respectful about such topics and the like and it took the majority of a year for anyone to tell me people used the Betas for more than murderous, drug addicted psycopaths. Even those people praised a story for having the two get into random fist fights with strangers in a Denny's parking lot so... Yeah. I'm not going to say the characterization of the Betas in the fandom is the best, or their use for that matter.

With all that said, I feel like the nicer Amity has become, and the more the two have come closer and closer to their Beta designs, the less I see of the Betas. Even now, I see lot less blood smears and sadistic grins and a lot more "It's just a normal Lumity picture except a different design." These aren't criticisms really but more just me ruminating on the fact that I think the fandom lost a lot of people who liked the edgier possibilities because of how poorly the show handled its own edge.

As for me as a content creator, have I ever considered using the Betas? I mean, I have for a one off or two, notably a one off where Luz is a dragon and Amity the willing sacrifice to her, but a one off can be hard to capture anything really interesting about them. I'd say I've only had one idea where I maybe wanted to use the Betas and that idea is a Noir Mystery? (It's complicated) story where Amity is a brothel owner in part to make her mom mad, Boscha is both bouncer and stripper for said brothel and dating Amity and Luz is a detective but not super gritty or the like. More Columbo (from what I hear, haven't seen it myself) than normal pulpy fiction Noir types. Also her detective style would lean a lot more into reading people and connections than forensics.

Another story I could do a concept pitch blog for since god only knows when or if I'll ever get to it. That idea is WAY more fleshed out than the going to hell one though.

But yeah, the betas are fine in my opinion to exist and mostly fine in how the fandom uses them because... I mean, if you don't like what they're being used for, just don't consume it. It's not necessary AT ALL to be a part of the fandom and I think a lot of fandoms really need to learn to chill about content creators creating content they don't like.

I don't think people realize the sorts of spaces they're creating within their own fandom because of that or the damage to their show's popularity either. It's a complicated topic and one I've had to give a lot of thought as, well... Ex-erotica writer, remember? And I've still done one erotic story for TOH too, even if it's aged up.

i've having interest in lots of different stuff lately, and wanted to know which ones you people prefer (read below below)

• my s/o has been playing the new p.okemon, and i've been bothering them for any L.arry appearances. which means i have some sketches of him i wanted to do still, but i probably won't go farther than that.

• all the while, i've playing f.ire e.mblem t.hree h.ouses, and the ideas for sickfic including these characters have piling. (i'm currently pre-time skip). should I give this fandom a chance?

• i currently have one sickfic to post for g.enshin i.mpact (it's a request for a.yato with food poisoning) but to be honest i haven't been playing much. still have lots of ideas to write and draw, just not enough motivation to go through.

• finally, i have one oc in the works, a succubus who's very into emeto. but everything about her is *very nsfw*, one of lewdest arts i've ever done, be warned. if there's any interest i can post some sketches or wips.

! there's a high chance I'll do all of the above, this is to decide the order/priority of things.

Well you asked about my special interest SO uno reverse. Top 5 fave Satan moments go

oh i forgot to answer this owo, for my om followers, this is pretty much all spoilers from s1-s4.

some context, since you don't play: MC is a human, and Satan is the Avatar of wrath/literal embodiment of that sin, MC is an exchange student to the devildom (om version of hell), and uh they have a pact together.

Tumblr hates me for not letting me post my screenies, also this was hard because I see Satan and my brain just goes ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️.

not in order but.

s3 where Satan faces the bogeyman and it takes the form of Lucifer as an angel, Satan who has issues with his identity and viewing himself as his own whole person, and being confronted with his very real fear that he isn't anyone. made me fucking cry, NGL. he's just like me fr.

s1, when Satan snaps and is going to run away from home ~~because Lucifer was being a cunt again~~ and that scene in his room where mc turns him down for a pact, and he's losing control, destroying his own belongings, threatening mc and tee hee. I don't know what to say, I like it when he's angry. I wish this scene was fully voiced.

in his dressing for the occasion devilgram (basically a short side story you can unlock by getting certain cards); you and Satan go on a cute date to a restaurant and on the walk home, he confesses his love to you, and his whole speech is very sweet. I'm paraphrasing here, but he says something to the effect of, "I only have these brief moments with you, the memories of your touch, I know it's impossible because we are separate beings, but I wish we were one".

hate this card for real (not because of Satan!!! it's everyone else!!) but he has another devilgram, where mc is depressed about it being new years and admits to being homesick. Satan tries to cheer up mc by literally making date plans on the spot for after classes (and everyone else makes fun of or insults them, so he's the only one that even cares, wow). so anyways, the date is cute, I'm not that familiar with Japanese culture to say much about that aspect, but he did try to celebrate new years in a human fashion for MC. his brothers (because they're cunts) had switched out his drinks for alcoholic versions (when he made plans to ensure that they're weren't) and he's a lightweight ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so mc helped carry him home, and then I can only assume he beat his brothers up for that stunt. anyways, I still liked seeing Satan because it showed how caring he is.

satans apology to mc, for re:the above scene I mentioned where he threatened mc. it was short, kind of blunt, but also no one had to force him to or convinced him to, he wanted to apologize out of his own free will.

in the HDD event: Satan takes you aside from the party, to express his love (in private and without interruption) and I FUCKING wish I still had the screenshots because he wrote a very sweet poem!! and I can't remember the lines anymore!!! ah! anyways, aside from being sweet, he also expressed being nervous about his writing and I hear that and simply remember that again dude has identity issues, but also he's artistic and finds art/writing very soothing and a way to explore himself so it's nice that he feels comfortable enough to want to include you in that!!!

in s4, where Lucifer was being a cunt again and trivializes Satan's trauma, and Satan loses it, runs away for two weeks, and is causing general havoc. and when you finally meet up with him, he flat out admits that he thinks that he's absolutely nothing and only a reflection of Lucifer and that his life has no meaning. I'm crying.

Sonic Superstars: Sonic Mania is tired. Try Sonic Team.

Here we go again. It’s time for a dozen more rabid Tumblr fanboys, fangirls, and fanenbies to dump all over me for yet another of my (in)famous “hot takes” that fandoms and ”Gamers™” love to dogpile on.

When Sonic Mania came out in 2017, I was as hyped as everyone else was. I even ordered the Collector’s Edition, seeing this game, at long last, as a return to proper 2D Sonic after so many years of it being dormant (outside of Sonic Generations, which was glorious). I even got into this song, which was a collaboration between Hyper Potions and Skye Rocket:

And I mean...I REALLY got into it. I had it playing constantly while I was awake. I bought all of Hyper Potions’ and Skye Rocket’s stuff on iTunes that had been released to that point. I. Was. HYPED.

Then, the game arrived. I tore into it with fervour, and played it immediately.

Right away, I noticed that something felt way off. The classic gameplay was there, but it just felt different. For one thing, the difficulty was a lot higher, which wasn’t a big deal, but the overall aesthetic of the game made it feel more like a rabid fanboy hardcore gamer’s fever dream than a true return to what I believed comprised the spirit of 2D Sonic.

This makes a certain amount of sense, as this game was made purely by fans of “Classic Sonic,” so none of this came as a surprise, but it did come as a disappointment. I ended up getting about 70% of the way through the game before outright quitting, and officially dubbing Freedom Planet as the true successor to 2D Sonic.

I never thought a true 2D Sonic would ever be made ever again, so I gave up entirely.

Sonic Superstars is everything I ever wanted in a modern 2D Sonic game: Made by Sonic Team (the studio that started it all), uses modern, updated graphics (3D Models) as opposed to sprite art, and new and refreshing game mechanics that add new flavour to 2D Sonic.

In short, what I wanted from the beginning: 2D Sonic brought into the modern era.

SEGA is finally bringing back Sonic in style~ I’ll be jumping on the pre-order train for this as well, and I hope they offer a Collector’s Edition. And I don’t care what all of the hardcore gamers and fans have to say about this.
