It’s Fine Press Friday!
In the spirit of Christmas’s arrival in three days, we present a small Christmas-themed book entitled An Alphabet of Christmas Words, published in 1966. The book is a dictionary of holiday terms, with corresponding illustrations. Entries were selected and edited from the Oxford English Dictionary by American writer Helen McKelvey Oakley (1906-2003), who explains that her “interest [in this project] lies in seeing how The Dictionary treats [each term].” The accompanying illustrations are by Ursula Suess (b. 1924), a graphic designer, calligrapher, and artist. Most recently, her art was shown in a 2022 solo exhibition at the Tubac Center of the Arts in Tubac, Arizona.
An Alphabet of Christmas Words was offset printed in Times Roman on Mohawk Superfine Text paper by Hallmark Lithographers Inc. in an edition of 360 copies, published by the Oxford University Press and designed by Ursula Suess and the press's art director and vice president John Begg (1903-1974). Also included with this book are two small season’s greetings cards from the press; one has Begg’s name printed on it and the other has “from Ursel and Mutti” inscribed in black ink.

Fendi pays tribute to Princess Anne with themed Milan show
This was the designer’s witty love letter from one strong, forthright woman within a powerful dynasty to another

Just this week, a colleague was extolling the wardrobe virtues of the “accidentally stylish” Princess Anne. And it seems that Silvia Venturini Fendi, the formidable matriarch of the Roman fashion house, is in agreement.
“I fell in love with the style of Princess Anne who, to my mind, is the most elegant woman in the world,” said Fendi, backstage in Milan. “When I saw the Coronation last year with Princess Anne in her uniform, I thought she looked beautiful. So I said ‘let’s be inspired for a men’s collection’.” The collection took the codes of the Princess Royal’s singular approach to dressing and applied them to men’s clothing, with a dusting of Fendi luxury in the mix.
“It’s a little bit Town and Country,” Fendi said of the distinctly British homage. “The Princess Royal is very rigorous in how she dresses, with this kind of military minded attitude, but feminine at the same time. She has a life outside the spotlight. She’s kind of an anti-fashion person, and to me that’s something that’s actually very fashionable and chic.”
Princess Anne’s status as a style icon over the years certainly hasn’t been by design on her part – leave the Princess of Wales to the Burberry while she dons House of Bruar – and was never the intention of the no-nonsense and hardworking royal, who favours practical country attire and Oakley shades over couture and experimental shapes, horse trials over the Gucci horsebit loafer. But that same sense of self-assuredness, stoicism and very British approach to dressing is just what appealed to Fendi in theming her show around the royal.
In actual terms, that translated into twinsets and chunky tweed skirts, heritage fabric coats – plaids spliced on plaids for a layered effect – waxed jackets and Wellington boots. The kind of attire built for yomps at Balmoral and Gloucestershire horse trials rather than the bars of Milan’s Brera district. The colours were those of the British countryside; olive, moss, oak and stone hues that evoked Gatcombe’s Green & Pleasant Land. The skirts, coincidentally, were in fact big, blousy Bermuda shorts designed to ape the appearance of Princess Anne’s solid kilts, although the royal herself has always mixed up the gender codes with her upright military uniform, so perhaps she’d approve of a bit of fluidity in that respect.
This being Fendi, a bit of experimentation with fabrication also weaved its way into the collection, with a tufted coat actually made from slivers of denim and some plush shearling on cropped jackets.
What Princess Anne would make of the sparkly suits on the willowy young men on the catwalk – perhaps a nod to her 1970s glamour – as well as the screaming furor from fans outside due to the presence of K-Pop stars and actors James Franco and Kit Harrington is anyone’s guess. But Silvia Venturini Fendi is no stranger to the singular position of being a strong, forthright woman within a powerful dynasty. It was a witty stylistic love letter from one woman of substance to another.

Tom Hiddleston Characters as Desserts
(Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters or images. This is just a fun listicle, not designed to offend anyone. As always, please feel free to leave comments and/or constructive criticism below. Thank you, and without any further ado, please enjoy!)

Will Ransome from The Essex Serpent - Raspberry Jam and Coconut Cakes
I chose this dessert for Will because it's mentioned in the original novel The Essex Serpent (which the series is based on). Plus, the titular serpent is considered a very exotic, almost mythical creature to Will, much like how coconuts were considered a very exotic fruit in Victorian England.
And in addition to that, the delicate nature of these little cakes is stronger than Will's loyalty (seriously, his wife Stella deserved better).
King Henry V from The Hollow Crown - Macarons
Macarons are delectable, expensive, and definitely fit for royalty. Plus, they tend to be subtle in flavor just like Henry's subtle charm, which he makes good use of when needed.
(What would Hal's favorite macaron flavor be? Something tells me French vanilla or raspberry.)
Loki of Asgard and Jotunheim, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe - Green Tea Cheesecake
How can Loki's dessert not have green - his signature color - in it? This is also a very decadent dessert and therefore fitting for a prince (and a rightful king). Plus, consuming green tea is linked to higher energy levels, just like how Loki excites fans all over the world.
(Also a good match for Loki? The Swedish princess cake, known as prinsesstårta. It was named as such because princesses were believed to have been fond of the cake. It's layered with custard and jam, and covered in green marzipan. Plus, Sweden is part of Scandanavia, which practiced Norse mythology once upon a time. And as almost everyone knows, Loki is the Norse god of mischief.)
Bill Hazeldine from Suburban Shootout - Battenberg Cake
For those who haven't heard of it before, a Battenberg cake is made from pink and yellow sponge cakes, linked together with jam and coated in marzipan, which is made from almonds and sugar. It was invented to mark the wedding of Princess Victoria (Queen Victoria's granddaughter) to Louis of Battenberg, hence the name.
The pink and yellow colors reminded me of Bill's sunny, rose-tinted outlook towards life. Plus, the square shape is pretty similar to Bill's square nature as someone who is pretty straightforward and reluctant to break rules.
Coriolanus from the play of the same name - Panna Cotta with Raspberry Sauce
Honestly, one of the reasons I chose this dessert for Coriolanus is because the raspberry sauce is reminiscent of Coriolanus's bloodthirsty nature as a general of the Roman army. And much like how panna cotta has a somewhat rigid shape that cannot be easily changed, Coriolanus has a tough time changing his own nature when he enters into politics (he doesn't get along with the ordinary citizens) and it's one of the reasons he doesn't do well in his elections.
Jonathan Pine from The Night Manager - Sticky Toffee Pudding
For a man who declares himself to be English "to the core", a sticky toffee pudding seems appropriate. Not to mention, Jonathan's decision to get involved in the operation to take down a great, international arms dealer puts him in numerous sticky situations that he needs to get out of, using his wits and strength.
Robert Laing from High Rise - Tiramisu
Tiramisu - lady finger cookies soaked in espresso, layered with ricotta cheese, and dusted with some cocoa powder. Dr. Laing deserves a dessert that caters to his mature tastes. Before the events of the movie, Laing is portrayed as someone who has their life together, down to each detail. Everything is perfectly in its place, just like the layers of tiramisu. Of course, that all changes over the course of the film, just like how none of the layers remain in place while eating a piece of tiramisu.
(And speaking of lady fingers, that sunbathing scene totally made some ladies want to put their fingers…never mind, sorry. Let's move on.)
Magnus Martinsson from Wallander - Lavender Lemon Cupcakes
Honestly, this is mainly because for some reason, I associate Magnus with the cottagecore aesthetic. Maybe it's because Wallander is set in a small town in Ystad, Sweden, or maybe it's because of Magnus's curls and boyish, innocent looks. But Magnus is anything but innocent sometimes, having sarcastic remarks ready at the drop of a hat. Hence, the hint of sourness with the lemon.
Oakley from Unrelated - Cannoli
There's a couple of reasons why I chose cannolis for Oakley. Number one, the film Unrelated is set in Tuscany, Italy, and cannolis are Italian. Number two, Oakley as a character keeps a playful, hedonistic, almost arrogant exterior when on the inside, he's sentimental and has deep-seated issues with his father. It's quite like how cannolis are hard on the outside and creamy, with chocolate chips or nuts, on the inside.
(Number three, based on how Oakley talks about sex and how he mentioned having a "hard-on", it's probably true that Oakley has learned to play with his own "cannoli". Sorry, that sounded crass.)
Thomas Sharpe from Crimson Peak - Victoria Sponge Cake
Soft, beautiful, and elegantly decorated - those adjectives describe a perfect Victoria sponge cake, as well as our first impression of Baron Thomas Sharpe. Plus, strawberries are red, just like the clay surrounding the Sharpe mansion (hence the name Crimson Peak). Though if I could, I'd customize this cake to have a hot chocolate bomb or something in the center. Because while Thomas has an exterior that is immaculate and romantic (it's almost too perfect to be true), he is one dark mess on the inside.
Jaguar!Tom Hiddleston - Dark Chocolate Brownie Sundae
Like Hiddleston's character in the Jaguar commercials, a dark chocolate brownie is well, dark, delicious, and probably rich. And the ice cream on top perfectly matches the seemingly cold demeanor of this villain. Like ice cream, some villains' cold exteriors melt under the right conditions.

Preferred Name: Storm Oakley
Alias: Liberalia ("Oh, you're asking about my stage name? It's the name of a ancient roman festival that celebrated spring. I thought it was nice, is all.")
Gender + Pronouns: woman + she/her
Singing/Voice claim, if any: Weyes Blood for her singing voice. I don't have one for her speaking voice, which is unfortunate.
Age: 27 ("Heh, I'm getting old. Hope you don't mind too much.")
More About Her; Storm is a calming presence in the rushing hustle and bustle of the music scene. She's pretty serious, but not strict. She's down to earth and often a voice of reason when it comes to her friends shenanigans. Somehow, she's always left picking up the pieces even if she wasn't involved. Storm also tends to play devil's advocate.
She radiates confidence in everything she does. Surety fills her voice when she speaks and her movements are smooth. Deep down she does have insecurities and doubts, but she stamps them out before they can truly take hold.
In her youth she used to be much more energetic and outgoing. She's since mellowed out, but every once in a while she misses the energy she had before. Storm doesn't dwell on these feelings long, however. She still retains the friendliness of her younger years. She's happy to meet new people and goes out of her way to be accommodating.

She can throw her voice! Storm rarely uses this ability on her own, but can be convinced to by her friends.
Her main hobby is drawing, sometimes she paints but doesn't like it as much as her markers, pens and pencils.

Vehicles
Technically, the two vehicles used for this build use the the Breeze Motors 2018 Mercedes E-Class Wagon and the 2020 Maserati Quattroporte as their base. I won't link to the download page as its a perma-paywaller and I fundamentally disagree with how Breeze Motors is handling their patreon personally. I will leave it to you to decide if you want their CC and how you acquire it if you choose to do so.
For my personal game, I have edited and stripped down my copies of these two cars and modified them so that they work with Simnation Travel. I have a pinned patreon post that is not paywall locked here explaining that more in depth and include the required files HERE.

I should note that in addition to lacking the door open /close options of the original as those were stripped down, the textures were redone with simlish for a more maxis match look in game.
Mods for this Build
These are not technically required for the build to function but this build was built using overrides for both Sim Realist's SNB Bills mod as well as Simnation Travel vehicles. You shouldn't get any weird errors if you load the build in without those mods but if there's an exception caught by MCC related to that, it's probably just reconciling that the override the lot was built with is not in place in your game. It should only be a one time alert the first time the game loads in if it happens and should not cause any issue other than MCC making a noise at you about it noticing weirdness.
(The SNB provides the High Speed Internet trait to the lot and I think it will just set that trait to empty if its loaded without but I haven't personally confirmed it, hence the note here. )

A year of enforced historical reading
In January this year, before I knew I had cancer, I decided to set myself the target of reading a book a week. I’ve now read eighty, far exceeding my target - here are some of the historical novels and history-related non-fiction I particularly enjoyed.
History books and history-related non-fiction
Norman Davies, Vanished Kingdoms: The History of Half-Forgotten Europe (2011) My Dad found this hard going; I never wanted it to end; a lesson in the mutability of all political structures.
Roszike Parker, The Subversive Stitch (1984) - a history of embroidery and the different ways it was used to inculcate ideas of femininity.
Sally Smith, Marshall Hall: A Law Unto Himself (2016) – biography of the Edwardian defence barrister, evoking the weird underbelly of his times: a Brighton woman posts out poisoned chocolates; damaged WWI returnees misemploy service revolvers & Hall’s wife dies a gruesome death at the hands of an unqualified abortionist.
Joseph Nash, The Mansions of England in Olden Time (1839-1849) - the detail of these engravings is astounding (Nash worked with Pugin) as is the way he imagines our ancestors frolicking within his expansive, sparsely-decorated interiors.
Tara Hamlin, Decorating the Godly Household (2011) - demonstrates the surprising abundance of early modern domestic religious decoration in Britain despite the iconoclastic tendencies of the period.
John H. Oakley, The Greek Vase: The Art of the Storyteller (2013) - very calming to read. Such beautiful and mysterious things created so long ago in such a different cultural context.
Nicholas Orme, Going to Church in Medieval England (2021) - a great book, wide-ranging in time-period, and giving a good sense of the way church services changed over time, and their complexity compared to later Protestant practice.
Mark Hailwood, Alehouses and Good Fellowship in Early Modern England (2014) - a vision of alehouse culture that was more accepted and socially inclusive than the polemic literature would suggest. The alehouse was not quite a Habermasian public sphere because it was observed and policed; nevertheless it was a place where people debated and exchanged political and religious opinions.
Neil MacGregor, Germany (2016) – very readable account of the material culture, art and architecture of Germany and what they say about how Germans remember their history. Only gripe – something was needed on Germany’s stupendous musical heritage.
Valerie Kivelson, Cartographies of Tsardom (2006) - an academic work, but with a bit of skimming I learned quite a bit about Russian history. Particularly interesting was the way the Russians colonised Siberia from the sixteenth century onwards in a comparable way to the colonisation of the Americas by Britain and Spain, and how they conceptualised Siberia’s forbidding mountains and deserts and nomadic non-Christian peoples as a kind of ‘hell’.
Walter Scott, Tales of a Grandfather (1911, originally 1827) - It gave me a great sense of achievement to get through all 1000+ pages of Scott’s bumper fun book of Scottish history from the Roman invasion to the 18th century – everything he used to write his Scottish novels and a lot more. God they were a violent lot and inventive in their use of it – and to think I may be 2/3 Scottish!
Samuel Johnson & James Boswell, Journey to the Hebrides (1775/1785) - A classic. Johnson attempts to act the antiquarian while Boswell gives you all the gossip on the people they visit and what Johnson said while they were there.
Simon Schama, The Embarrassment of Riches (1988) – the book on 17th century Dutch culture which established Schama’s reputation. Schama has a wonderfully rich vocabulary, although he sometimes overdoes it. Explores some interesting themes, such as the psychological effect of the eternal threat of disaster from the sea. Provides much food for thought into the ways in which Dutch culture paralleled English culture, and the ways in which it differed
Historical fiction
Tobias Smollett, The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker (1771) – a long Rabelaisian epistolatory ramble through 18th century England and Scotland from five people’s perspectives.
Sigrid Undset, Gunnar’s Daughter (1909) – Undset uses her deep knowledge of Norse history and Icelandic saga to tell a woman’s story of revenge in early-Christian Norway.
Elizabeth Jane Howard, The Light Years (1990) and Marking Time (1991) - the Cazalet series. Multiple viewpoints convey the vanished materiality of 1930s/1940s. Superficially light in tone but often dark in subject matter.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006) begins hilariously; ends appallingly in its unsparing depiction of the tragedy of Biafra, fictionalising real accounts of civil war.
Maria Edgeworth, Castle Rackrent (1800) – Edgeworth uses stories from real family histories to satirise the Irish Ascendancy. Every student of Irish history should read it.
Walter Scott, Old Mortality (1816) - Scott steeped himself in late-seventeenth century Scottish history to create a fictionalised version of it. He seems to be saying that extremists of all types are as bad as each other, as are those who look to take advantage of religious and political divisions for personal gain. There are memorable descriptions of battles won and lost and all ends spectacularly with a confrontation on a waterfall and a Hamlet-style multiple body count. He does however play fast and loose with historical fact, weaving in memorable incidents from other contexts in order to sensationalise his narrative.
Jean Giono, The Horseman on the Roof (1951) – a mesmerising and lyrical story set in the midst of a cholera epidemic in southern France in the early nineteenth century, with an impossibly romantic hero, Angelo. With its descriptions of birds attacking the dead and the living, could it have inspired Hitchcock’s The Birds?
Eliza Haywood, The Female Spectator, ed. Gabrielle M. Firmager (1993) - a selection from The Female Spectator, published in the mid 1740s. Although Eliza Haywood claims a moralistic purpose this is a world in which misbehaviour (usually sexual) is lying just below the pristine surface of society, and never far from people’s thoughts.

Favourite time of the year: Spring-Summer, which is Brasil is essentially the same thing except spring is windy af. I like rainy days as much as the next person, but nothing beats a sunny, windy day!
Comfort foods: Pastel, which is a kind of deep fried pastry with different fillings (my fav is chicken and cheddar!) and Panettone, cause I’m a Christmas baby!
Do you collect anything: I don’t think I do. Maybe different pens? It’s not deliberate tho.
Favourite drinks: Orange juice, sprite and a good old caipirinha, which is a Brazilian cocktail featuring lime (usually, cause lemon is expensive here), sugar and cachaça(tm).
Favorite music artists: I shift a lot between artists, especially when they release new music, changing the vibes I met them by, but I currently really enjoy Jonathan Bree, Tom Rosenthal and CMAT. They’re very unique to their styles and I enjoy their music very much. I also really enjoy peremotka (hopefully that’s how it’s written in roman alphabet!) Their post punk vibes are smashing!

Safe as Houses (Vera Claythorne/Philip Lombard): very good, very smutty, very sad;
Bird of Passage: The Book of Dust centric, this follows spy business from Oakley Street during TSC. I wholeheartedly recommend it if you want more to dive into Lyra’s world!
Lyra’s Uncle: some good old AU, giving Asriel a little brother and making it all very sad. Sami writes a lot of good stuff, but this is my favorite piece of hers.
Applied Heresy (Marisa/Asriel): Honestly, I love this fic to bits, I have it downloaded on my kindle and phone. It is the best Masriel experience pre-show you’ll get. The writer also delves deep into Lyra’s world pre-TBOD, but she makes it seems so believable and it’s good old worldbuilding! If you haven’t read this yet and you’re in the HDM fandom, what are you doing????
Favourite video games: I’m a massive Bioware fan, so my favorite games feature nearly everything they’ve ever done. I lovethe Mass Effect trilogy (especially the 3rd one, sorry lol) and I love Dragon Age and I have a devotion to Star Wars: The Old Republic! Been playing it strong for 8 years and I love it pieces. That is excellent Star Wars, Disney don’t interact please lol

Tumble’s Natm ocs - the Wild west🐴🍀
They’re here! All 8 of them! Why is there so many of them!
Meet my chaotic pile of cowboys and girls! This collection of characters includes both my very first natm ocs - and my newest ones :)
Characters:
Chance A. Merrick
Chance is an honest man and prefers to say what he thinks – even if it hurts someone’s feelings. He’s not the most trusting person, but tries his best. Doesn’t mind an adventure but prefers to stay out of doing stupid things. He works as a horse trainer, sometimes he even seems to prefer the company of his steeds to other miniatures. Laid back around his friends, cracks jokes and tells stories. Even though he does make it clear when he doesn’t like someone, he usually prefers to be friendly with people.
Owns a shire horse named Bug.
Gender & Pronouns: cis man, he/him
Sexuality: gay
Relationship status: hardcore crushing on Bruno
Death in real life: fell off his horse and got trampled by it, breaking his neck and spine
Bruno Regulus Maximus
Bruno is a former Roman soldier, who found his true home with the cowboys. He’s a bit too curious for his own good and struggles with anxiety – but that doesn’t stop him from making friends and having fun. While he’s prone to getting himself in dangerous situations, he makes up for it with hard work and dedication to help both of his families find perfect peace with each other. Hates the idea of fighting, prefers diplomacy.
Bruno enjoys arts – he writes poems and plays instruments such as lyre, guitar and piano. He’s hesitant to share them with bigger audiences, but often plays or reads to Chance or his friends.

Jessabella “Jessie” Oakley
Jessie is adventurous and likes taking risks. She’s positive most of the time and always looking for something to do. Most of the time works with horses together with Chance, but enjoys working at the railroad as well. Clever and quick-witted, always finds a way out of a tough situation. Actually very interested in the Romans and enjoys visiting their diorama with friends. She’s had some romantic flings with Flavia in the past and the two are still good friends.

Death in real life: died of dehydration caused by a severe fever that wasn’t treated
Sawyer “Sawy” Schuyler
Sawyer is a quiet and somewhat introverted man, who prefers listening to others to talking. He works as a bartender and is the most comfortable there, where he can talk with his regulars and listen to the wildest stories people come up with. Likes to play match maker from time to time, though is quite bad with his own love life. A hopeless romantic. Sometimes, when you get him to talking, he can go on and on for hours – usually about the gossip he’s heard during work.

Sexuality: asexual panromantic
Relationship status: has an on/off thing with Leon – but has really strong feelings for them
Death in real life: bled out after having his head bashed against a wall in an assault
Neakita Grahams
The mother hen of the squad. A very caring and kind woman, Neakita is always looking out for others. Whether you need to vent, have an injury that needs taken care of, want a hug or just want to gush about your new crush, Neakita is there to listen and help out. She condemns any kind of bullying and will stand up to others, even if she doesn’t quite know them. While she seems peaceful, when angered, she’s a fierce warrior that might need someone to hold her back – lest you want her to commit third degree murder.

Relationship status: married to Marshall
Death in real life: childbirth gone wrong
Marshall Grahams
No one knows how this man has managed to get so skilled at handling guns – Marshall is awfully clumsy and seems to have a personal cloud of bad luck following him wherever he goes. He’s prone to getting himself hurt, but doesn’t really mind it; he’s just happy to be alive and see the wonders of the museum. Most of the time he’s relaxed and chill, though he knows when to get serious. Acts as a father figure to many of his friends.

Death in real life: fell into a river and drowned
Madeleine “Maddie” Grahams
A bubbly, classy young lady with a positive attitude. A bit of a diva and dramatic, sometimes whines about tings that aren’t that big. Very social, enjoys talking to people – and about people, as she’s very into gossip. Maddie gets excited very easily and her attention span isn’t the best. They aren’t very good with helping people out with emotional troubles and isn’t too experienced with comforting others. Tries her best though.
Marshall’s twin sister.

Death in real life: bitten by a rattle snake
Arizona “Firefly” McCoy
Most of the time, Firefly is very blunt and short tempered and comes off as unnecessarily harsh. She doesn’t really trust anyone and prefers to keep its distance to people. The only exception seems to be Maddie – the two are polar opposites, but get along quite well. Firefly has a habit of going rogue and getting itself in trouble, but nearly no amount of danger can get her to admit that she’s in need of help. If you think you know what’s going on with it… no, you don’t.

Death in real life: shot multiple times in a robbery

Just another professional day in paradise, Roman swinging by the other lawyers in town. Particularly to run into Alara. He was suited and booted as usual, flashy watch and a slight pep to his walk that reeked of gloating and importance.
As soon as his eyes met with Alara’s, he gave a shit eating grin but kept the rest of his movements as casual as possible. “I’m uh...here at the request of your client, Mr. Oakley.” Roman began and then gave a dramatic pause. “Sorry, he’s now my client. Hope you can understand, he’s requested everything you’ve done so far to be handed over.”
