New York Central Hudson 4-6-4- No. 5276, class J-1 -d is seen accelerating C.P.R. train No. 712 one mile east of Oakville station in July 1947. These interesting locomotives were pooled with C.P.R. and Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo power for the Toronto to Buffalo runs. For many years the NYC engines supplied for this service were 4-6-2 "Pacifies" but around 1937 the more powerful 4-6-4 "Hudsons" supplemented. Both types came from the East Buffalo roundhouse power pool and almost any "Hudson" could be seen running into Toronto, even the pioneer "Hudson" No. 5200.

“"IF WE CAN CONSCRIPT MEN WE CAN CONSCRIPT WEALTH",” Toronto Star. March 1, 1933. Page 18.  ---- But Capt. Philpott Prefers Alternative of Issuing Dominion Money ---- SEES NEW WORLD --- Bronte, March 1. - A new social order, based on the inherent right of man to work for a living, and incorporating the best features of the present capitalistic system, but with a "new deal" for the working classes, is the only hope for defeating the depression in Canada, Capt. E. M. Philpott told a meeting of the Men's Community club here last night.
"In the last 23 years there have been more changes in the world than ever in history before," Capt. Philpott stated. "And in the next 23 years I predict there will be even greater changes. As it stands now, the world has learned to produce as much with as it needs, but it is so selfish it has not learned how to distribute it.
"The present political machinery is outworn, and there is graft and corruption, not in one party, but in all parties. If I could see 50 years ahead, I think I could see the present antiquated form of abolished, and party new politics order a established. The world is facing an unprecedented crisis in the near future, and unless we can get together as Canadians and rebuild the whole structure from the ground, many will be buried in the ruins.
Capitalism Unfair "The war and the depression have shown the unfairness of cut-throat capitalism. I don't pretend to have at solution, but I can suggest that we compare the manner in which we wage war, but yet fail to do anything. about the depression. For 100 years. we have kept military experts at the nation's capital ready for war, but during that time we have bad ten depressions and no one did anything. about it. Those depressions did more to harm Canada than ever war did during that time.
"Seeing men lined up before soup kitchens, as we can in any city to-day, reminds me of the signs we used to see during the war, pro- claiming Your King and country need you.' I think that now they should have a sign, 'Your King and country don't need you now.' Surely, if the country can tell a man he must fight and die in time of war, a man has a right to say to his country. that in peace he has a right to live and work. The cornerstone of a new social system is the right to work. If the present system cannot provide work. the sooner it collapses the exist.
"Even in good times, how can the farmer get a fair price for his products, when, for example, the stock in dairies has been watered. 1,600 per cent., and similarly with other farm products? This exploitation is not confined to persons of any one political party, and all parties are responsible for letting them exist.
"In the new order, any private concern operating against public interest would either be put out of business or taken over by the state.”
Farmer Must Control "The farmer must control the distribution of his basic products.
"Canada is much too over-governed. Why should we need ten parliaments when England gets along with one? This waste cannot go on. In future trade competition is going to be much keener, and the government will either have to cut down the fixed charges of the farmer or bring farm produce prices back to normal. Financial interests would be ill-advised to attempt to prevent the restoration of balance between farmers' income and expenditure. They would lose far more in the crash that will come.
"The trouble now is not with external trade but with selfishness within the country. You cannot blame world conditions for Canadians starving and going half clad when wheat rots in storage and factories are cluttered up with goods. they cannot dispose of.
"If private enterprise cannot find men work, public enterprise must do it. There should be set up a national employment board to find work for those who cannot find it themselves. They could be employed in making and improving highways, clearing up slums and building central heating plants.
"Hours of labor could be cut down in proportion to the increasing efficiency of machinery. Objectors say we cannot afford to put these projects into operation, but I maintain that we cannot afford not to.
"We cannot succeed if the Liberals alone undertake it, nor the C.C.F., nor the Conservatives. Everyone in every party must pull together."

Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi, the acclaimed Catholic friar, philosopher, mystic, and teacher, is celebrated by the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi every October 4. He founded the men’s Order of Friars Minor and the women’s Order of Saint Clare, among many others. This saint led a colorful and interesting life before devoting his life to God and becoming one of the most renowned Christians of all time. To celebrate him and commemorate his journey to the afterlife, the town of Assisi lights oil lamps for two days. Religious services are held and some children even bring their pets to be blessed on this day.
History of Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
It’s unknown if Francis was born in 1181 or 1182, but historians agree that he was born in Italy to a wealthy cloth merchant — right into the lap of luxury. Though he was baptized Giovanni, when his father returned from France with a penchant for all things French, he began to be called ‘Francesco,’ meaning, ‘Frenchman.’ As a teenager and young adult, Francis lived a carefree, wealthy lifestyle full of feasts and friends, yet he knew there was something missing.
After joining on a military expedition, spending a year as a captive, and dealing with a life-changing illness, Francis began to experience visions directing him towards God and away from the frivolity of mortal life and fun. He joined the poor who were begging at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and, in Italy, God spoke to him, asking him to repair his ruined church in Assisi. He illicitly stole some of his father’s cloth, sold it, and offered to pay for the repairs to the church with the money. The priest refused stolen money, and Francis’ father was livid.
To avoid his father, Francis lived in a cave in San Damiano, eventually renouncing his family and becoming a beggar. He gradually began to care for the poor and sick in Assisi. Soon, his preaching gathered him a following, and he founded the Friar’s Minor. The noblewoman Clare of Assisi heard him speak and was inspired by his message and, with Francis’s help, formed the order of the Poor Ladies, or the Poor Clares.
Francis would go on to travel throughout the globe, in places like Egypt and other locations in the Middle East to preach the gospel. When he returned to Italy, he reorganized the Franciscan orders, which had grown too large for the system in which they had developed. Franciscan missionaries were sent across the globe to spread the word of the gospel.
Near the end of his life, he was praying and fasting on a mountain when an angel appeared and gave him stigmata, or the wounds of Christ on the cross. He was treated in a hospital and was also suffering from trachoma. His last days were spent dictating his spiritual testament and he died on October 3, 1226. Two years later, he was pronounced a saint. The next day, the foundation for the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi was laid, and he was buried in a hidden tomb in the Lower Basilica on May 25, 1230.

October 3, 1226 Death of St. Francis of Assisi
After spending the last few years of his life almost completely blind, St. Francis of Assisi dies in 1226 as he recites Psalm 141 or Psalm 142, according to differing sources.
July 16, 1228 St. Francis of Assisi Canonized
Only two years after his death, the Catholic Church (specifically, Pope Gregory IX) recognizes him as a saint — the next day, the Pope lays the foundation for the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
1978 Remains Confirmed and Re-Entombed
After his hidden burial place is first discovered in 1818, a new, neo-classical style crypt is created and, in 1978, his remains are tested and confirmed by the Pope’s commission of scholars and he is put in a glass urn within the old tomb.

Staff Pick of the Week
My staff pick this week is the trade edition of The Tale of the Shining Princess by Japanese-born writer Hisako Matsubara (b.1935) and Japanese-Canadian artist-printmaker Naoko Matsubara (b.1937), published by Kodansha International LTD. Tokyo, Japan in 1966.
As a artist-printmaker and bookmaker who makes woodcuts, I am greatly inspired by Naoko’s prints. Naoko Matsubara’s work carries on traditions of Japanese printmaking while having its own contemporary flavor. Her woodcuts are ecstatic, they are vibrating with movement. Her use of bold shapes and the white line of the the carving tool makes the most of what woodcut has to offer. In the book form, the active images carry the reader’s eyes through the book space. Her use of negative space activates the page. Additionally, her woodcuts have translated beautifully to commercial printing.
The Matsubara sisters are daughters of a senior Shinto priest, and were raised in Kyoto. Both studied, lived, and worked in the United States. Hisako received her Master of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State College, moving to Germany where she continued her studies and became a prominent writer, publishing her work in Japanese, English, and German. In the 1980s she moved back to the United States, this time to California where she worked at Stanford University.
Naoko received her Master of Fine Arts from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, now Carnegie Mellon University. After her studies she traveled across Europe and Asia. She returned to the United States and became the personal assistant to the artist and wood engraver Fritz Eichenberg, an artist who has been featured many times on our blog. Naoko taught at Pratt University in New York and at the University of Rohde Island. She also lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts for a time. Naoko is currently living and working in Canada in Oakville, Ontario, where she continues to work and exhibit nationally.
The work of both Hisako and Naoko have had great influence inside the United States and around the world. So lets celebrate their accomplishments!
This book has end sheets of mulberry paper with inclusions of Bamboo leaves, the cover is a red textured paper with a gold stamped design by Naoko.

FIC WRITERS RETREAT 2023
WE ARE BACK, BABEY!
(registration info coming soon!)
For the first time since 2019, there will be a full-on FIC WRITERS RETREAT again in August of this year!!
August 10-13, to be exact. We've had a slight change of venue, so we'll be meeting in Oakville, Ontario this year. Final cost and registration process is still being finalized, but the ballpark is really similar to what it's been: roughly $450-$500 CANADIAN* that includes all meals from Thursday night to Sunday morning, 3 nights accommodation (private room in shared 2-person suite), and all conference expenses. You just have to get yourself there.
(*Current exchange rate with USD makes this $331-$368 US)
For those of you who don't know, this event started in 2016 where a whopping SEVEN (7) people got together in Barrie, Ontario for three days of writing, writing talk, fandom discourse, and general shenanigans. None of us knew each other, but this little handful of folks took a chance and started an amazing community that is still going strong. Subsequent years we had just on 20 participants on average, from all over. We survived a three year hiatus and are keen to get up and running again!
Every year we've met, we've had a great mix of familiar friends and new faces, and every new addition has been such a gift. Please feel free to scroll this blog and contact anyone who's come to the retreat before. If you like what you see, consider joining us this year!
I will tag all new posts with #fic retreat 2023 or you can follow this blog for updates.
I tried to get everyone tagged who should be tagged but I am looking at registration info from 2018 and 2019 for urls and some of you have gone and some of you have changed, and at least one of you has gone and changed. If you see a broken tag and you know how to fix it, please let me know and/or pass this on!
And of course, if you know someone who might be keen, let them know!
With extra tags and thanks to @antheiasilva and @blogstandbygo for so, so gently lighting lovely little fires under my ass to get this to happen!
