So,

June is Filipino Heritage Month.

In Canada, where Filipinos have been among the most reliably numerous immigrants in the past few decades, the date was chosen to commemorate the country's Independence Day in 1898. That's when they freed themselves from hundreds of years of Spanish colonization. 

If I'm being honest, I knew very little about the Philippines before I married my wife Kristina. When I was a teenager I sponsored a young Filipino boy named Nestor through an international charity, and when I was in the Yukon I wrote an article for the Whitehorse Star about the positive impact Filipino immigrants were having on the local economy. I also read a great novel by Alex Garland called The Tesseract that was set in Manila, but other than that I've been woefully ignorant about my family's origins.

Last year my father-in-law introduced me to Jo Koy, a Filipino stand up comic known for his racy, hyper-sexualized content. One of the most interesting things I learned from him is that there is a close kinship between Mexico and the Philippines, both in religious sensibilities (Catholic) and in basic culture. They're rebellious, hot-headed and considered "crazy" by their more conservative neighbours. He claimed this was due to them both being conquered by the Spanish, then rejecting some elements of their culture while embracing others. It makes for an interesting hodge-podge.

I was interested to learn, from a quick Google search, that the Philippines didn't truly become independent in 1898 — they spent another half century under American rule, only finally becoming free following the Second World War. When I teach Kris and Celista about the Philippines, it will be important for them to understand the devastatingly negative impact of colonization and why it's important to recognize the Indigenous culture that was suppressed and nearly wiped out, just like in Canada. 

One of the most shocking elements of Filipino history was the introduction of "human zoos" which were open as recently as 1958 in places like New York City and London. It was there that racialized people from a variety of origins were kept in cages and gawked at by their western oppressors. In 1904, Americans displayed Filipino tribespeople in zoos like this during the Summer Olympics. Just another reminder that humans are sometimes disgusting to each other, and it really wasn't that long ago that deeply entrenched racism dictated the reality of many people's lives.

While my wife was growing up, she routinely experienced racism. Because she was half-Filipino and half-white, she didn't feel like she truly belonged in either category. A lot of attention was paid to her jet black hair, her sun-browned skin and ambiguous features. When people talk about white supremacy, this is what they mean: close attention to every difference, every physical detail of somebody's body, all scrutinized and held up against an Aryan ideal we haven't quite successfully shaken from our collective consciousness.

But there's also all the things I plan on teaching my kids about their heritage to give them pride in where they came from. They'll learn about the warrior Chief Lapu-Lapu, the Philippine Insurrection, and the villainous Rodrigo Duterte. They'll learn that the country is made up of seven thousand islands, with innumerable distinct cultures. And karaoke, I've learned, is extremely popular, just ask my mother-in-law! Also, once you start looking for them, there's plenty of Filipino celebrities who have achieved global success — including Vanessa Hudgens, Manny Pacquiao, Nicole Scherzinger and (my favourite) Bruno Mars.

 One day Kristina and I will successfully take a trip to the Philippines, and I'm already stoked for the southeastern Asian sunshine. One of her relatives is a mayor (who was nearly assassinated!) and we have family scattered all throughout the islands, some of them in places without phone or Internet to connect them to the outside world. I can't wait to dive into the ocean, to see the tropical foliage and see firsthand the derelict weaponry abandoned there during World War Two. 

I want the kids to walk those white sand beaches and know this country is part of their story, and always will be.

How To Ensure A Sustainable Logistics Operation

Operating a “sustainable logistics operation” on the part of Logistics and Transportation companies is fraught with difficulty. On the one hand, consumers’ demand for faster delivery times is growing, while on the other hand, such fast delivery times have a negative impact on the environment.

While governments are enacting more strict measures to become carbon-neutral, such as levying fines and setting stringent emission reduction objectives by 2030, people’ cooperation and efficient technology use by logistics corporations are required.

Why is “sustainable logistics operations” such a buzzword today?

We all know that Planet Earth is under threat from corporate greed, negligence, and a lack of environmental consciousness among its population. We’re also aware of the increasing efforts by responsible governments, agencies, and citizens to rescue the environment and establish a sustainable way of life.

While governments are increasingly imposing stronger controls and regulations on logistics corporations to curb emissions and establish industry standards, consumers are increasingly seeking shorter and cheaper delivery times on the other side. This increases the number of trips taken and the amount of gasoline consumed, as well as our carbon impact.

Unfortunately, none can be preferred over the other; both customer happiness and environmental sustainability must be met, and success requires a balanced approach.

Picture this:

· You go to your favourite internet retailer and purchase a pair of trousers, shoes, and a shirt.

· For each parcel, you’ll get three different tracking codes. The three packages arrive at separate times. All of this falls within your “need” for “next-day delivery.”

· “How rapidly Ecommerce enterprises provide things and what a fantastic thing it is for consumers,” you say.

What’s more, guess what?

Because you “needed” some garments and shoes delivered overnight, you just contributed to environmentally unsustainable logistics, a mound of discarded packaging, and carbon emissions!

You did an excellent job!

Is this the way it needs to be?

No way! However, it is up to us — consumers, businesses, and governments — to become more aware of the environmental damage we are inflicting and to discover cost-effective and long-term logistics solutions.

It is critical to achieve “Carbon Neutral” status from the beginning to the end of operations. And, inside this loop, sustainable logistics is a key part of it.

Importance of sustainable last-mile operations

Consumer demand for speedier deliveries is increasing every day, putting enormous strain on last-mile logistics and thereby increasing our carbon footprint. Consider the following:

· In our top 100 cities, the last-mile eco-system will employ approximately 40% more vehicles by 2030.

· This will result in a 35% increase in delivery traffic and a 20% rise in total road congestion.

Without a doubt, the impact on our environment (e.g., global warming, carbon emissions, and precipitate natural calamities) will be scary, serious, and terrible. Governments all over the world are taking steps to ensure that businesses follow sustainable practises.

Although Amazon and Walmart pioneered such delivery timeframes (24-hour delivery, Same-Day delivery), these companies are now attempting to make their logistics and delivery operations more sustainable.

Unfortunately, many businesses are still unsure how to do so, and are caught between a rock and a hard place, namely, demanding customers vs. unsustainable operations.

Such businesses must make a deliberate effort to improve their operations’ long-term viability.

5 top ways to improve logistics sustainability

1.Using E-vehicles, green fuel: Using e-vehicles instead of internal combustion engines and alternative fuels such as green fuels is a recent breakthrough that could be a game-changer in lowering carbon emissions.

2. Packaging: It should come as no surprise that over usage of plastic packaging is one of the primary causes of ocean-floor blockage and landfill overcrowding. Eco-friendly packaging techniques and materials, fewer layers in packaging, reusable containers, and continual benchmarking against what is needed, what is sustainable, and what is surplus can all help to make packaging methods and materials more sustainable.

3. Trip volumes: These days, “10-minute food delivery” and “1-hour deliveries” are the most popular selling factors for Ecommerce and supermarket websites! Have you ever thought about your effect as a consumer? Returns and replacements increase the number of trips, put delivery personnel in risk, increase fuel consumption…the list of negative consequences is infinite.

Consumers and suppliers can work together to shorten delivery schedules by using delivery management software to optimise logistics using multi-drop deliveries, maximising capacity, and slotting delivery times so that suppliers can gather together maximum deliveries on the same route.

4. Returned orders, multiple delivery attempts: Wrong addresses, order returns and replacements, failed or delayed deliveries, and client absence at the appointed time are just a few examples of factors that lead to multiple delivery efforts and unsustainable logistics and parcel distribution.

Order returns are a major issue that necessitate many journeys. To prevent order returns and replacements, some methods include researching consumer behaviour, strengthening production standards to eliminate manufacturing faults, and ensuring customer availability (among others).

Modern last-mile delivery software that has options to accommodate flexible fulfilment and maintain address accuracy while “personalising” the consumer experience can help prevent such misses.

5. Insufficient capacity: Capacity shortages cause demand-supply bottlenecks, and resolving them frequently necessitates a massive increase in the number of trips — and with it, the related last-mile unsustainability.

Some of the finest ways to organise capacity requirements include deploying efficient delivery systems that optimise fleet-vehicle use, partnering with experts at local-level fulfilment, and adopting efficient parcel sorting and packaging procedures.

Conclusion: The importance of utilising technology in the management of sustainable logistics and operations cannot be overstated. This is an innovative solution to the huge issue of consumer demand vs unsustainable delivery operations.

Using a last-mile delivery management software with a route-optimization technique reduces trip volumes, increases delivery success, and maintains customer availability while reducing carbon emissions and miles per trip. You are a “carbon criminal” if you aren’t using it!

fit the crown to my head by aknightley | 75k this became my favourite kl fic on the day i first read it, and has been unmatched since. it's a fantasy au where keith is a prince, and it's super intriguing and well written! the character dynamics combined with the witty dialogue & the overall setting drive me insane and i simply love it a whole bunch.

build a paper plane (to float to you) by oceaes | 24k so so well written and sweet! it's technically a christmas fic and it's summer now, but i don't care; this is required reading and i take no complaints. keith & lance are roomates, and lance drives back home to set things right after learning keith's spending christmas by himself
