The German-made zeppelin ZR-3 skims the tops of skyscrapers above foggy Manhattan on its way to Lakehurst, N.J., October 19, 1924. It had just flown across the Atlantic, logging 4,229 nautical miles. The Metropolitan Life Building can be seen below.
The Times reported on the scene in Lakehurst the next day: "So great was the motor traffic that numerous tie-ups developed and thousands of visitors did not reach their homes until well after midnight."
The transatlantic flight was considered an aviation triumph, and its captain and crew were given a parade up Broadway and greeted at the White House. The Atlantic would not be crossed nonstop by air again until Lindbergh's flight in May 1927.

Untitled. [What's the Use of Going Through With This Election?]
Record Group 46: Records of the U.S. Senate Series: Berryman Political Cartoon Collection
This cartoon concerns the 1948 presidential election. President Harry S. Truman, the Democratic Presidential nominee in the election of 1948, was widely expected to lose by a large margin to Republican nominee Thomas E. Dewey. This cartoon, printed just days before the election, shows Dewey confidently looking over the shoulder of a frowning Truman as they read bulletins showing the prevailing public opinion at the time. Despite several polls predicting a landslide victory for Dewey, Truman won the election in one of the biggest and most well-known political upsets in U.S. history. Journalists at the Chicago Tribune were so convinced that Dewey would win that they prematurely printed the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman" on the front page.

Animal of the Day!
Icelandic Horse (Equus ferus caballus)
(Photo from Guide to Iceland)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Domesticated
Size (Weight/Length)- 380 kg; 140 cm in height
Diet- Grasses
Cool Facts- Despite being called a horse, the pony-sized Icelandic horse comes straight out of The Hobbit. Their long fur and thick manes allows them to live out extremely cold winters. Icelandic horses most likely went to Iceland as companions of the Scandinavians. Overtime, the horses adapted to their new snowy homes and countless other horses and ponies, including the Shetland pony and the Norwegian Fjord horse, were bred from these valiant steeds. Now a protected breed, Icelandic horses are carefully documented so that the breed can stay pure.
Rating- 13/10 (Fuzzy horses are adorable.)
Animtober- Ponytail (Pony-sized.)
