Today is the only day you can reblog this.
Imagine being 10 years old and going to summer camp. Getting whisked away into a world where some weird monster insists they’re your partner and they’ve been waiting to meet you all their life. Where night and day comes and goes as it pleases. Where you find telephone booths that don’t work and a few step away is a factory and then in the distance is a vast desert and then there’s this demonic being that’s trying to kill you.
You travel for days, weeks on end trying to find a way home. Between fights against antagonistic monsters and disagreements with your friends, between the hunger you feel and how tired and weary you are travelling aimlessly not knowing where you’re going exactly. You begin to wonder what’s happening back home. Are your parents worried, frantically searching for you? Are your siblings crying for you? Are your friends wondering if you’ve died? Have they given up searching for you?
And then, all of a sudden, in a struggle against a monster that has been relentlessly pursuing you and your friends, you suddenly get separated from them and you end up back home.
And you discover not a day has passed since you left your home.
Traumatique, truly 👌

Going to try to do some Japan trip blogging about relevant things. First up: I went to Comiket!
Tumblr media
['Tokyo Big Sigh' indeed, to quote the discord friend ^^]
There was this tweet going around before the event, which to paraphrase the translation went something like "If you are hoping to have fun this weekend, get off the metro at Odaiba Beach instead. Comiket is a struggle for survival; be prepared to fight or get ready to die". And I laughed at that tweet, but my dudes it was absolutely true. Comiket's combination of scale, intensity, and sprinkle of heat stroke on the wait to get in is unlike anything I have ever seen. Over 250,000 people attended this summer's Comiket; vendor booths numbered in the thousands. Many of them are marked as 'hot commodities' - like the animation director for Bocchi the Rock, Kerorira, tabled there selling a booklet containing production docs from the show, and the line for that booth alone rounded a city block:
Tumblr media
These people had priority lists and backup targets; I abandoned this entire idea from the get-go, arriving later and accepting that some things would be sold out. Absolutely the right call, but even then it was still just dizzying to try to take it all in; you can't possibly cover everything, I saw maybe half of the booths at most, and everyone's frenetic energy drags you along too into feeling like you are missing out. Its fun as well as intense though; everything being sold is unique to the event, a deeply precious work from the group that made it, and you find some extremely niche products. It was a bit surreal running into over a dozen artists & writers who I follow on Twitter from across a language barrier, in person, selling their work. It is not a convergence that happens anywhere else.
What I found interesting was that Comiket has this sort of reputation in the west as Japan's "Anime Con", despite them not being similar at all, actually! Comiket is a marketplace, not a con, as the "Comic Market" name implies - the similar starting letters are just a coincidence. While American cons do have large merch halls, and one can argue that they are merch-first affairs for many, that merch is very much not the 'point' of an anime con; the community-focused events that bring attendees together, and connect attendees to panelists, is the core focus. Meanwhile at Comiket the vendor is the focus; as an attendee you are customer, and interface with the event that way almost exclusively.
This is trivial in a certain sense ofc, but I think has knock-on effects; the idea of me, as a customer, "making friends" at Comiket seems like a non-starter. It happens the way it always can of course, but the design of the event generally mitigates against it, including making even the logistics of 'hanging out' difficult with absolutely no seating around. People can't even cosplay in the main hall! Cosplay is in its own hall, where you stand alone and have strangers take photos of you - then you change to go to vendors if you want. Western anime cons meanwhile were (initially) built to promote this directly, with events built around that. However, vendors at Comiket have an intensely different story; sharing tables, helping cover each other's booths for breaks, organizing stock together, etc. You can see how this event builds a sense of community for doujin authors; given their limited financial returns that community is imo a vital source of the longevity of Comiket as a successful event and cultural lodestone for the otaku community.
I think I sort of have a question of "why Comiket" in the back of my mind for this - why is Comiket the symbol of otakudom? Japan does have other events, more con-like ones, of course - but also Japan's fandom is just so much more focused on fanworks, and has been for way longer, with fanwork consumption as a primary mode of expression. It is a bit of a chicken vs the egg issue here; is that focus the reason Comiket is the center, or did having well-organized events like Comiket promote fanworks in a way other communities didn't have? Of course its gonna be a some of each and many more reasons besides, but attending it definitely highlighted that distinction. Comiket is a symbol of cultural difference.
Anyway will post about some of the things I got soon, gotta wax sociological for the brand first ^_^

Persona 5 IRL Stuff
Requested
Tumblr media
The entry and exit to each floor of Mementos is based on the appearance of train stations, and the stamps you collect for Jose are seemingly the game's version of train stamps lol.
I'm not sure if this is still true, but train stamps were introduced to me as something that smaller kids will collect when they travel with their families, so it makes sense to me that the NPC associated with them is also a kid. As an adult tourist, I've never bothered with train stamps cause you really have to go out of your way to find some of them and when I'm at a train station my ass is trying to go somewhere lol. I suppose that even in real life, some of those stamp locations must feel like they're random spawns.
I have absolutely bothered with red shrine seals, though. Maybe Persona 6 will have the protagonist collecting those.
Tumblr media
Ryuji takes you to a ramen restaurant in Ogikubo. Based on it being in Ogikubo and the appearance of the restaurant in-game, it's modeled after Marufuku Chinese Noodles near Ogikubo Station. The sign in-game just says "Chinese Noodles" without the store name. I'm not sure if this is a famous restaurant or maybe it's just one that Atlus employees like to eat at lol.
Tumblr media
Ryuji also takes you to a monjayaki restaurant in Tsukishima during his Confidant. You go to Tsukishima specifically because Tsukishima has a line of restaurants called Monja Street that specializes in, you guessed it, monjayaki.
Tumblr media
Akechi introduces you to a jazz bar in Kichijoji called Jazz Jin. The outside appearance seems to be based on Some Time which is also located in Kichijoji. Only the outside resembles what's in-game, though. The inside is different.
Tumblr media
Yongenjaya isn't a real place in Tokyo, but it seems to be a renamed version of Sangenjaya - san means 3, yon means 4. I've not been to Sangenjaya, though I've heard that details like the laundromat, even down to the vending machine, looks nearly the same as it does in-game. (If you are interested in doing Persona 5 tourism around Tokyo, I've heard that the Sangenjaya locals do not appreciate Persona 5 tourism or related loitering in this area.)
Tumblr media
Shibuya Station is pretty much accurate with how it is IRL. The green train car that you visit Tora at has been moved since the game came out, but the dog statue of Hachiko (or Buchiko as its known in game) is there, the 1000 stairs you climb to get to the Ginza Line, etc, is also all accurate.
Tumblr media
When you touch base with Ohya, you unlock Shinjuku. The movie theater in-game is called Cult 9, which is based on an actual movie theater in Shinjuku called Wald 9. The other areas in Shinjuku seem to be a condensed version of Kabukicho (or Kamurocho, if you've played Like a Dragon).
Tumblr media
Futaba wants to go shopping in Akihabara and Nakano. Akihabara you've probably already heard about as Nerd Haven. She also talks about visiting Nakano, likely to go shopping at Nakano Broadway which is home to a bunch of Mandarake 2nd hand anime/etc goods stores.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The "huge pancake" that Morgana was talking about is how Tokyo Dome looks from the outside. The pancakes he's comparing it to are the thicc souffle-style fluffy jiggly pancakes that you can get at various restaurants. (Also probably what Akechi thinks of when he hears delicious pancakes lol.)
The other areas and things, I'm really not sure there's much to say about them.
Ann takes you to Harajuku cause she wanted to eat sweets (this is really relatable btw)
Meiji jingu is also real and located near Harajuku
The buffet Ann takes the guys to is the Marble Lounge, but I believe it's since been remodeled
There's multiple museums in Ueno
There's a Catholic church in west Kanda but afaik the inside looks different than in-game
Inokashira Park is real and has swan boats and stuff
Ikebukuro's planetarium is in Sunshine City Mall
Chinatown is real but it's much further than the map makes you think (it's in Yokohama)
Odaiba Seaside Park is another real location
Miura Beach is also real, way down south past Yokohama
Jimbocho is indeed where you'd go to buy books
etc etc etc

Odaiba Beach by TheHolyToenail
When Rin shows up at Haruka's place to spend the next few nights, Haruka doesn't mind. What he does mind, is how Rin doesn't seem to be his usual self. His eyes are glued to his phone, he doesn't notice Haruka at all. When he leaves just after dinner, Haruka can't stop his mind from drawing conclusions:
Rin is going to abandon him.

Digimon Insert Update
!! Please read my links / carrd before interacting !!
As I said before, I've wanted to make a Digimon fan story for a long time, and I've tried coming up with ideas here and here. But now I decided to not have a set story for my self insert and partner. I feel like this would be easier for me, and I didn't want to focus entirely on crossovers or alternate evolutions; I wanted to try to have this fit into many types of stories. I still have some concrete ideas I want to keep though, which I'll briefly explain.
Everything is mostly the same, with my insert as a possible "final" member of a team of adult Digidestined, my partner starting off as an antagonist working for a major villain but bitter and jealous that he didn't find a human partner himself, ect. But there are also a few small changes: My partner was born on a beach instead of a cold region, but still has some ice, water, and wind-related powers. I also decided that his evolution line would in fact be Yukimibotamon - Pagumon - DemiDevimon - Sorcermon - Aegiochusmon - Beelzemon, with some attacks that are different from others' for the most part. This is what I have to far:
Yukimibotamon: Diamond Dust (Same as in canon)
Pagumon: Bubbles, Dark Burst
DemiDevimon: Bat Flutter, Luna Claw, Purple Fog or Fluffy Attack
Sorcermon: Crystal Cloud, Aquary Pressure or Aquarious Fill, Magic Heal, Ice Illusion or Baluluna Gale
Aegiochusmon: Most likely inherits Water, Ice, or Holy abilities. His attacks would reflect either of those elements.
Beelzemon: Mostly the same as in canon.
That's all for now! I tried coming up with decisions on this, and I like everything I chose. I haven't talked about it often but Digimon is a big interest of mine and I wanted to post this for a belated Odaiba Day!
