Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)

I actually watched this last year, but for some reason didn't review it. Anyway, I needed a re-watch to remember all the gory details.

This Netflix animation is a good one, friends. They've really hit their sweet spot with Christmas animation. It's the classic Christmas ghost story we know and love with Ebeneezer Scrooge (Luke Evans) introduced at the top as a miser with a soft spot for his dog, Prudence. Honestly, the addition of Prudence made this redemption arc a lot more believable for me. Anyway, so, Mr. Scrooge bumps into his nephew Harry Huffman (Fra Fee), who invites him to Christmas dinner as Mr. Scrooge is shaking down Tom Jenkins (Giles Terera) for 25 pounds on Christmas Eve. Of course, Tom Jenkins doesn't have it and Scrooge doesn't have patience for Tom or Harry (maybe he would for Dick, but who's to say), so Scrooge doubles his debt and heads back to his office with Bob Cratchit (Johnny Flynn).

As usual, the first ghost who visits Scrooge is his late business partner, Jacob Marley (Jonathan Pryce). He tells Scrooge about how his greed in life lead to him being chained in death and how Scrooge needs to change his ways to save himself.

Then, the ghost of Christmas Past (Olivia Colman) shows up and takes him through past Christmases with his sister Jen (Jemima Lucy Newman), his old love Isabel Fezziwig (Jessie Buckley), and his old boss Mr. Fezziwig (James Cosmo). Scrooge relives some of the best and worst moments of his life.

The second ghost, of course, is the ghost of Christmas Present (Trevor Dion Nicholas). Present shows him Harry's Christmas party that Scrooge blew off yet again where Harry's wife Hela Huffman (Sheena Bhattessa) goes on about how much Scrooge sucks. A similar scene unfolds at the Cratchit residence during toasts.

Finally, the silent ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes Scrooge to the future where we find Tom Jenkins and all the other people who owe Scrooge money are celebrating his death with song and dance. Inappropriate, but I would do the same if one person dying meant my student loans stopped existing. Scrooge also discovers the unfortunate death of Tiny Tim Cratchit (Olliver Jenkins and Rupert Turnbull).

We know that when Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up on Christmas day, he's a changed man and he saves Tiny Tim and makes up with his nephew Harry. It's a classic story told several times in several different ways. So what's special about this one? Well, the original songs are a nice touch. It's a little spooky, which it should be! It's a ghost story! The voice actors in this are phenomenal, and the animation is also really beautiful. Overall, 4.5 stars.

Hey there! I know you don’t get much time to look at asks, so really don’t worry about this, but I just wanted to share this with you. I know you like Only Fools And Horses, and I’ve been thinking about Trigger all day, today. I developed this headcanon that Trigger used to get migraines as a kid/teenager, and Del and Denzil were the only ones who didn’t make fun of him when he shut down, or cried over the pain. Del would even look after him, sometimes, staying with him in the nurse’s office, or letting him nap at his flat when Trig couldn’t make it home. This is one of the reasons Trigger is quite close with Del.

Seriously though, everyone should watch OFAH. I mean it. Hilarious, very rewatchable show that can make you laugh and cry. David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst are national treasures. I got to see the musical in the summer of 2019, wearing a bright yellow shirt with the Trotters Independent Traders logo on it, and - to my utter delight - because I was sitting in the second row, the guy playing Del Boy (Tom Bennett - who also popped up in Red Dwarf a couple of years ago) spotted me. There was a bit during the opening number where Del addresses the audience, trying to sell us hooky gear. I can't remember the exact wording, but there was a bit where he was trying to flog some "leaning Eiffel Tower" miniatures. Rodney pointed out to him that the Eiffel Tower isn't leaning, to which he just smiled knowingly and said something along the lines of, "We know that-" pointing between himself and me "-but what can't speak can't lie." I really can't remember the actual wording, just the sentiment, but it was just great! I got to be in on a Del Boy scheme! 😂 But enough about me...

This headcanon is very sweet. Del has a heart of gold and has spent most of his life trying to look after people, so this totally fits with his character in my opinion. Denzil is also a friendly guy, and I can definitely see them being kind to Trigger when this happened, telling Boycie to shut his trap (gotta love Boycie, the git). I can actually already half see this scenario in my head. Have you seen Rock & Chips? If not, that was a mini prequel series for OFAH set in the '60s, about Del and Rodney's mum Joan. It's got Nicholas Lyndhurst in it as Freddie The Frog, while a young Del Boy is played by James Buckley. It features Del and all his mates in their teenage years. Unfortunately, John Sullivan died just before the third one aired. The story felt unfinished to me. We will never know what Joan Trotter truly said on her death bed!

Celebrating Black History in 2020! Henry Ossian Flipper (1856 - 1940) - First African-American Graduate of West Point.

Born near Thomasville, Georgia on March 21, 1856, Henry O. Flipper rose to prominence as the first African American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1877. Despite being born into slavery to Festus, a shoemaker, and Isabella Flipper, Henry was reared in a family that emphasized excellence, and he and his younger brothers all became respected members of their communities as a military officer, AME bishop (Joseph), physician (E.H.), college professor (Carl), and farmer (Festus, Jr.).

Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon completing West Point, Flipper was transferred to the l0th U.S. Cavalry Regiment where he became the highest ranking and most famous of the Buffalo Soldiers (African Americans in all-black regiments) stationed at Western military installations. Flipper’s assignments included Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Fort Elliott, Fort Concho, Fort Davis, and Fort Quitman, all in Texas. Flipper earned distinction during the the Victorio Campaign which pitted the Apache leader Victorio against the U.S. Army in Texas and New Mexico between 1879 and 1880. There he was assigned to A Troop under the command of Captain Nicholas M. Nolan. While on that assignment he became the frirst officer of color to lead Buffalo Soldiers in battle.

Trained as an engineer, Lt. Flipper was known for his design of a drainage system at Fort Sill, Oklahoma (popularly known as Flipper’s Ditch and now a national monument) which minimized malaria by removing standing water.

Flipper’s military career ended when Flipper was accused of embezzling $2,000 in government funds while serving as quartermaster at Fort Davis, Texas. Flipper was charged with taking the funds and then lying about it when confronted. He was tried and acquitted of all charges except “conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman” at a U.S. Army court-martial at Fort Davis on September 17, 1881. Despite appeals by Flipper’s supporters who argued that his close association with Mollie Dwyer, the sister-in-law of Captain Nolan, was the real motive behind the charges and the harsh sentence (two white officers were found guilty of embezzlement but neither was dishonarably dismissed from the Army) was racially motivated, President Chester A. Authur refused to alter the court-martial verdict. Flipper was discharged from the Army on June 30, 1882. He spent much of the rest of his life challenging the charges and attempting to clear his name.

After his dismissal from the U.S. Army, Flipper lived primarily in El Paso, Texas until 1919 where he worked as a civil mining engineer, surveyor, translator, newspaper editor, historian, and folklorist in Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. His success in these areas was partly because of his fluency in Spanish. In 1921 Flipper came to Washington, D.C. as the assistant to former U.S. Senator Albert Fall of New Mexico when the Senator was appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Warren G. Harding. By 1923 he was employed by Texas oilman William F. Buckley Sr. to worked as an engineer in the petroleum industry in Venezuela.

Flipper authored two autobiographies: The Colored Cadet at West Point in 1878 and Negro-Frontiersman, The Western Memoirs of Henry O. Flipper (completed in 1916), which Theodore D. Harris edited and published in 1963.

Despite his many accomplishments, Lt. Flipper is most remembered in history as a casualty of racism in the military for his court-martial trial primarily on the charge of embezzlement at Fort Davis. Flipper retired to Atlanta, Georgia in 1931 and died there on May 3, 1940 at the age of 84. Thirty-six years later, in 1976, Flipper was posthumously granted an honorable discharge by President Jimmy Carter. He received a full presidential pardon in 1999 from President Bill Clinton.

The Irish Volunteer was first published on the 7th February 1914 and aimed to provide guidance and to develop the Volunteer movement. It ceased publication on the eve of the 1916 Rising. Following two years without an official publication, the concept of resurrecting a secret publication by the Executive was considered in July 1918.

In July 1918, Volunteers ambush two RIC men who had been stationed to stop a feis being held on the road between Ballingeary and Ballyvourney in the first armed attack on the RIC since the Easter Rising – one is shot in the neck, the other beaten, and police carbines and ammunition are seized. The attack brings a British military presence during the summer and an increase in police raids. However, there is no coordinated armed campaign against British forces or RIC.

Raid on Captain Morgan's, Bunalun, Skibbereen:

During 1918, I had organised and kept a Company of Volunteers on frequent drilling parades at Dreeny Bridge, Skibbereen. Captain Morgan of Bunalun had become very aggressive to his workmen, telling them "many Irishmen would get a chance of going to heaven out of the trenches". We decided on getting his wind up by raiding his home for sporting guns, at about 10.50 a.m. one morning we disguised ourselves, and held up workmen in Morgan's yard at about 1.30 p.m. at point of revolver. We got four sporting guns and a box of cartridge caps in this raid. - Thomas Hourihane

The counter-offensive from July 1918 results in successive defeats inflicted by French, British, and American forces as the Allies begin to integrate tanks and airplanes into operations, eventually forcing the German Supreme Command to decide to request a ceasefire.

By the end of June there are reports that the flu has reached Ballinasloe, Tipperary, Dublin, Derry and Cork, yet by mid-July the first wave of the pandemic abates.

Daniel Buckley, of Boherbue, Co. Cork, who survived the sinking of the Titanic joined the famous Irish ‘Fighting 69th’ (the 69th Infantry Regiment) in New York and is killed in action in the advance that broke through the German lines. Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur said ‘By God, it takes the Irish when you want a hard thing done!’

July 3 – Lord Lieutenant bans Sinn Féin, the Irish Volunteers, the Gaelic League and Cumann na mBan for being “a grave menace to and are designed to terrorise the peaceful and law-abiding subjects of His Majesty in Ireland”.

July 26 – Major Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock, the fifth highest scoring pilot of the war and a supporter of Irish nationalism is shot down by enemy ground fire at Calonne-sur-la-Lys. He was 31 years of age. His 61-73 “kills” makes him the Allies first or second highest scoring ace of the war

July 27 – Albert "Ginger" Goodwin, an advocate for workers rights in Canada, is shot in the neck and killed by disgraced ex-policeman Dan Campbell

July 30 – Journalist and poet Joyce Kilmer is killed in action near Muercy Farm, beside the Ourcq River (b. 1886)

July 31 – Captain George Edward Henry McElroy, a leading Irish-born fighter pilot with the RFC and the RAF is shot down by ground fire over Laventie, aged 25. His 47 “kills” places him 6th in the list of Allied aces and 15th in the overall list of WWI fighter aces.
