Seeing that one Unicorn Overlord review take off, that said the game wasn't really sure about it's identity get met with a bunch of people going
'how could you possibly think that? It feels like a classic strategy game with modern tweaks.'
But that's exactly the point and problem?
It is exactly Ogre Battle MOTBQ/64 with a few tweaks that improve the gameplay, but a progression system that gives you everything pretty much instantly, thus inundating you with maps that ultimately feel pretty empty and removing Ogre Battle's staple utilisation of player choice to diversify the experience (reputation and alignment stats, that alter available classes, characters, and endings).
And that's the issue.
The set up of the world doesnt benefit the gameplay, every mechanic added (that doesnt impact the gameplay specifically) simply feels superflous.
It's stuck with the identity of Ogre Battle but cannot figure out what really made Ogre Battle work.

The director of Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics telling everyone to shut the fuck up about Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics and play Unicorn Overlord is incredibly funny, and at least the second time I can think of a Japanese developer going “stop fucking talking about my games and go play a Vanillaware game, you philistines”.
